Dust & Scratches behaving oddly

I've just started using Photoshop CS5 (2007 iMac 2.8Ghz, OS 10.5.8) after using CS4 and am noticing odd performance from the venerable Noise > Dust & Scratches filter.
I set my parameters using live preview, click OK and wait: the resultant image is all but unchanged. Nothing at all like what the preview was showing me. If I zoom way in on the file I can see changes, but it's as if the settings were all too fine to have had the result being previewed.
If I go back to CS4 the behavior is normal again.
Need help: working on deadline.
Thanks!

  • Dust&Scratches/Masks/Opacity

I'm recently new to Ae so bear with me. I have some dust spots in a footage I need to get rid of. Using the Dust&Scratches effect. Working in two layers. The original and a dust&scratch. Once setting the radius I go into the original and create two masks around the dust spots using the ellipse tool. Using the key frames I change the opacity of the masks. Works beautifully on the one mask but on one of them it changes the opacity of the whole layer. I.e totally blurred or goes totally black. Just can't figure out why changes to one mask should behave in a completely different way to another. Any help sincerely appreciated.
By the way using this way to remove sensor dust is it on of the better ones? Have done a lot of searching but nothing seems very straightforward if the background keeps changing. Want to avoid turning into stills and then back to video as concerned I might loose quality.
    Attaching screen shots.
    Thank you

  • CS6 will not save keyboard shortcut for dust & scratches filter

I am running Photoshop CS6 with all updates on a Windows 8 system.  I have several keyboard shortcuts set up that all work fine but when I assign a keyboard shortcut for the dust & scratches filter it will work until I close Photoshop - when I then open Photoshop again this shortcut is gone but all my other shortcuts remain.
I have tried going back to the default keyboard shortcuts and then adding just the shortcut for dust & scratches (I have tried ctrl-F8 and several others) and then closing Photoshop and opening it again with the same results.  I was able to add back all of my other shortcuts and they work fine.
For some reason I can assign a keyboard shortcut to anything except the dust & scratches filter.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem?
    Thanks

I had a chance to try the script on a windows 8 machine running photoshop cs6 13.01 in both photoshop cs6 versions 32 and 64 bit and shortcuts seem to stay between restarts.
If in photoshop cs6 you go to File>Scripts you can see that the script is actually listed?
When i saved the script out of ExtendScript Toolkit i named it Dust and Scatches.jsx.
Did you run ExtendScript Toolkit as an administrator before saving the script?
(right click on the ExtendScript Toolkit shortcut (tile) and choose Run as Administrator)
    Saved to:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Presets\Scripts
    (cs6 32 bit)
    and
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS6\Presets\Scripts
    (cs6 64 bit)
Another possibilty if you can't get the script to work is using an action (Filter>Dust and Scratches) and assigning a function key for the shortcut.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 becomes non-responsive when using Dust & Scratch filter

Trying to apply the remove dust & noise filter in PS Elements 10. When the filter is applied, the hand tool becomes locked on and nothing further can be selected.  All menu options become greyed out.  Cannot even close program, have to force quit (running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4).  Have already reset all tool options to try & resolve the hand tool locking.  Have only encountered problem with this filter.
I've got a bunch of scanned photos I really need to use the Dust & Scratches filter for.  Any help would be appreciated!

    Restore default preferences
Preference settings control how Photoshop Elements displays images, cursors, and transparencies, saves files, uses plug‑ins and scratch disks, and so on. If the application exhibits unexpected behavior, the preferences file may be damaged. You can restore all preferences to their defaults.
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift immediately after Photoshop Elements begins launching. Click Yes to delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements settings file.
A new preferences file is created the next time you start Photoshop Elements.

  • Trackpad behaves oddly when firewire is used

All of a sudden my trackpad start to behave oddly when I have a firewire device connected. Specifically a MOTU Ultralite mk3 hybrid paired with a MOTU ultralite mk3 firewire. The problem started yesterday when I launch Logic Pro X. a minutes after the trackpad starts to be unresponsive and the pointer moving in wrong direction or jumping.
I tried to reset the PRAM with no luck. Even worst, when I tried to boot the macbook pro after rebooting the system freezes on the logo screen when the firewire port is used with that device. when I disconnect the firewire port the problem totally goes away.

Perhaps it is now time for the Harpoon solution (aka the Guinness solution in the mid and far west)
for those not in the know:
    1. turn everything off.
    2. unplug firewire cables
    3. unplug power cords
    4. get up from well worn chair
    5. walk to refrigerator
    6. open refrigerator
    7. remove bottle of Harpoon (Guinness, local micro brew, etc)
    8. pop cap
    9. pour into glass ( you AREN'T going to drink it from a bottle, are you?)
    10. sip responsibly. enjoy the moment. think pure thoughts
    11. return to kitchen. If less than 15 minutes has elapsed, have another. Otherwise, retrurn to edit room.
    12. Plug everything back together
    12. fire up external monitors, VTR, external hard drives & computer in that order.
Does it work now? If yes, congratulate your self. If not, oh well, but at least you are in a much better frame of mind to begin some serious troubleshooting.

  • OS 10.3.9 Running slowly and behaving oddly

My system has been behaving oddly recently. In every application and category therefof. Pages load very slowly, then normally. Sometimes they won't load at all, can't find the server, then they load immediately a few moments later. Various applications will come up very slowly, then, at other times, come up quickly. I have tried turning it off, waiting, then turning it back on. No help. Although my disc space that needs reclaiming seems to have increased exponentially since I first began using the mac two years + or - ago. I have all the updates, security and otherwise, installed. I am wondering if I am infected with avirus of some sort, spyware, whatever.
What is a good spyware, etc. anti-virus application/software for mac that doesn't completely clog it up?

  • Macbook Pro Retina Display Pixel / Dust Scratch problem

I have a MBP 15' Retina purchased in October 2012 and last night noticed a number of small white dots on the screen which appeared to be dead pixels, booked into the genius bar this morning and was told that the dead pixels were actually dust scratches where a small piece of dust had got caught between the screen and keyboard when it was closed and had damaged the screen. You can feel tiny bumps if you run your finger nail over the areas so this may be the case but while it may be the reason you'd expect that a $3500 machine wouldn't have a design fault that allows tiny dust particles to damage the screen.
The Genius said that this was a known issue and that while it had been escalated with other customers' machines, the issue is cosmetic and not covered under warranty.
Has anyone else had this issue and what were the /are the steps to getting the screen replaced under warranty given that this apprears to be a known isssue and shouldn't happen to a $3500 computer.
    Thanks

This is a load of malarky!!! Do you know how big the dust particle has to be in order to chip the screen.  Remember there is a rubber seal that runs the edge of the screen, and this is 1mm in height. So what we are talking about is something the size of a large grain of sand.
Ok, lets say you have this, the sand must be very sharp, in order to chip glass.  Secondly, if you press gently on the glass while looking at a light in the reflection of the glass, you will see it distort, right?  So that means, even a 1mm piece of dust is not going to "Chip" it.
Ok, lets say, that you happen to drop your wifes 0.2 carat diamond on your keyboard and close the screen.  In this case, yes it may chip the glass, but I ask you, don't you think that this kind of protrusion would at least result in a scratch on the aluminium body?   What is not known by these guys is that this glass is crystalline.  If the manufacturing process doesn't go well, it can sometimes cause fault lines in the crystallisation structure.  Not all glass chips are physical.  In fact, heating and mild distortion of the glass could cause chips in weakened areas.
I AM 100% sure that if anyone threatens legal action they would replace the screen.  Any laboratory low-end microscope will examine the chip and will clearly show the crystal in the glass flaking.  Did someone say CLASS ACTION.
I have this issue after having the laptop for 3 days, I AM VERY ANGRY that the twerp at genius who thinks he is very intelligent, tries to fast-talk his way out of things.  I am not one to make a scene at the store and dont think this gets us anywhere, but Apple needs to step up and train these nappy-heads about these things.
I mean, I have had laptops for 20 years, I have had scratches, cracks, smirks, plastic burns on the screens, but NEVER a chip in the glass, only time I have seen a chip is on my windscreen, and doesn't that look different?  This is one for the courts, I am not happy that I have spent so much on a MBP now and have to live with the fear that the screen can spontaneously crack, perhaps even explode in a mushroom cloud (ok, that one was comedy relief).
I am a very honest person as most of us are here, and the bearded baboons at Genius have no right to call me or any of us liars, granted there are 1% of people who come in any lie, but the other 99% are loyal RETURNING customers, this is why Apple has been successful, not cos of the flarnin (that word is so I dont get sensored,!!) logo!  Laptops are portable devices and don't belong behind museum glass.  If Apple "Stuffed Up" with this design, that is ok, however they should take a few bucks off their soaring share price and help the consumers who help them succeed.  Either redesign the product, do a recall on all your machines, or at least don't be a JE_RK about replacing machines still under warranty and make out that YOUR customers are liars.
The problem with a monopoly is not the company, its the staff who get a rush out of feeling like they are somehow in a position of power, but go home and realise they are only paid $20/h and get grounded for coming home too late.
I say, take action, prove your point, and don't take their nonsense.
(In case you are wondering, this was a rant, mainly at the Genius boys!!! But some good points.... I hope :D)

  • Dust & scratch removal

Is there a function in A3 for dust & scratch removal - NOT doing it manually, but over the entire photo or selected area? Or, is there a plug-in available, such as the dust removal one for Photoshop?

The problem with the PSE user interface is that it is a high-end painting/publishing/retouching tool (PS CS) with a complex menu & dialog box structure, upon which:
    * features have been removed wholesale (curves, scripting, etc.)
    * features have been removed partially (color management, etc.)
    * features have been added (Variations, Process Multiple Files) resulting in more menus, more modes
    * a completely independent application has been unceremoniously glued on (Organizer)
It is, in a word, a MESS.
As I've said before, the technology is great but the user interface is a disaster.
Honestly, I would leave PSE alone and sell it as a "painting" application. Then I'd come out with a new product designed for photographers/snapshooters. I would:
    1. take a 'light' version of Apple's Aperture
    2. add selections/masking [the nondestructive, resizable, Ansel Adams Zone-based selections/masks in LightCraft's LightZone are very cool!)
    3. add simple layers (maybe even the tool-specific layers as in LightZone)
    4. and then do usability testing. You know, clicking on text shouldn't just select the layer, it should allow you to edit the text. Jeez, how difficult is that for a consumer program?

  • Dust&scratch cs5 win7

I scanned a neg in bw, and it shows small black dots. I tried dust&scratch filter and in the preview the dots disappear, but clicking ok, ps does its calculations and after that the image still have those dots. Clicking undo and redo doesn't have any effect on the image. There are no other layers , tried grey, rgb, 8/16-bit -modes, every time the same thing. In the preview no dots, but final image still has them.

Are you looking at the image at 100% zoom (or higher) when you see the dots go away with the Dust & Scratches filter?
Can you please capture a view of your screen when you're about to run the filter, then again right afterward, then post the images here (using the little camera icon)?  That will help illustrate what you're seeing clearly and you'll likely get better help.

  • Is your Mail behaving oddly?

    Hi there,
I have a .Mac account. I have the following weird behaviours:
    1) When I read something, the email is not being marked as unread.
    2) Sometimes I can't delete what I have just read.
    3) it exaggerates the number of emails that are supposed to be in my inbox. (e.g. at the moment I am supposed to have 13 in my inbox, but I can only count seven).
    4) Now it won't show what is supposed to be in my Inbox (but is not saying that the application is not responding).
    5) I also appear to have gained a new .Mac account. which I want to get rid of but don't know how.
    Er, any thoughts?
    All the best and thanks,
    Luke

Mail.app is behaving oddly rather suddenly for me, too. But just like the other person I'm not having a problem similar to the one you describe. Instead the issue I have is an ability to quit the software. The only way to quit this app right now is to shutdown my computer. Otherwise, if you try quitting you get into a loop. The app appears to quit, but then after seeming to have quit for a few seconds, it opens itself again and the loop continues. No other problems have accompanied this. I've done no upgrades that might have lead to this.

  • Clean up Dust/Scratches on iPhoto Based Pix ?

Background:  I have current Mac/iPhoto software and a CanonScan 9000F that came with PSE 8. I plan to scan about 25 trays of old slides and get them organized with iPhoto. The first two trays have been imported to iPhoto events and they turned our relatively well with one major exception. These trays were the oldest ones  (40+ years) and they have a good deal of dust and fibers. Is there a way I can export these events into PSE 8 and automatically have it remove the dust, etc from these initial 200 photos? And then import them back into iPhoto?
Are there any documented "how to" procedures covering this subject.   Thanks much in advance.

Set up PSE as your external editor in the iphoto prefs and send the photos from iphoto to PSE, or export them to the desktop, use file>open in PSE and reimport them to iphoto as new files.
If you use PSE as external editor, save, not Save As, without changing the name or format and iphoto will keep one edited version plus original. You may need to go to PSE>prefs>Saving Files>On First Save to set this up right.
In PSE try the Dust and Scratches filter, the spot healing brush, etc. Hard to make a recommendation without seeing a photo.

  • Horizontal scrollbars behaving oddly

This is not a complete show-stopping bug but Logic Express (9) recently started having issues with horizontal scrollbars -- they center themselves. Occasionally they work as they are supposed to, but most of the time they immediately return to the center, which is really irritating after a while. I'll be scrolled all the way to the end of the timeline for example, and I decide I want to scroll back left slightly; I click on the scrollbar and any kind of drag makes it jump back to the center. It acts like the mouse cursor was there, too.
Reinstallation and trashing preferences did not fix the problem.

Same problem here, but it seems also related to the screen in use, at least in my setup. I'm running Logic on my MacBook with a native screen resolution of 1200x800. I have a second screen attached above it with a resolution of 1920x1080 which I use for the main Arranger screen, the MacBook screen itself is mainly used for displaying the mixer and AU's.
When the arranger screen is on my larger display the horizontal scrollbar is flying all over the place when I try to move it, but when I have the arranger window on my MacBook's screen it behaves normally. Seems like if Logic gets confused by the different widths of the screens, like if it is behaving to have 1200 pixels to scroll on while there are 1920.
Whatever happens, it's kind of annoying...

  • Rotating thru Safari windows with Command-` behaves oddly in v.5.0. Why?

If one has several Safari windows open at once, one can one-by-one "flip through" them by pressing Command-` (backward-accent/tilde), in turn bringing each new window to the front.
In earlier versions of Safari, Command-` behaves in a very predictable and useful way -- it rotated through all the windows unidirectionally if you keep pressing. So, for example, if you had 7 windows open at once, and kept pressing Command-`, you would first see page 1, then page 2, then page 3, etc., up through page 7, and from page 7 then you would keep going "forward" to page 1 again. The windows would go in a cycle. +This would remain constant even if you closed windows once you arrived at them.+
That's the way it always has been (in my memory), and the way I like it.
HOWEVER, I now have Safari 5.0 with 10.6.4, and it behaves differently! And not at all to my liking.
Instead of rotating through all the windows in order, Command-` now "bounces" back and forth in its direction if you perform any action to any window.
So, for example, now if you have 7 pages open, and want to rotate through them all to see what they are, and if unwanted, close them, the following strange and ANNOYING behavior happens as you repeatedly press "Command-`":
If you're on page 1, you then go to page 2, then page 3 -- and then if you close page 3, and press Command-` again, you DON'T go to page 4, but rather back to page 2 again, then page 1, then page 7 -- and if you close page 7, you then bounce back to page 1, page 2, etc.
This also happens if you do ANY action to the top page -- move its location, enter text in a field, close it, whatever.
Why does Safari do this now? It's totally counter-intuitive and incredibly bothersome, because it's no longer a simple task to flip through all open windows and close the unnecessary ones. Instead, one constantly is bouncing backwards and forwards like one is in a rubber room. And I end up feeling like I'm in a rubber room.
Has anyone else noticed this new manner of Safari behavior? And if so (and most importantly): *Is there any way to change it back to the way it used to be?*
This is important to me because I dislike using tabs and I often have several windows open for a project, which I then often want to (mostly) close and start a new project, etc. I takes way too much time and confusion simply trying to see all open windows with the new behavior.

I am running 10.6.4. It's just that when I fist updated it (on the first day it was available), Apple had not yet added 10.6.4 to the Forum settings. But now it's there and I have updated it in my profile.
Before I do any of your suggested fixes, I would need to know that the behavior my Safari is exhibiting is abnormal. Because I think that nothing is "wrong" with my Safari -- I think this new behavior is built-in and it is the way it's supposed to be. So that all the fixes in the world won't change anything.
So, what I'd really like to see is a report from someone --anyone -- that Safari 5.0 behaves the same way for them, or differently for them.
I just did a test myself and it took exactly one minute. Can someone do it for me and report back?
    Here's the simple test:
"Minimize" all your existing Safari windows to get them out of the way.
Open a new window, for example, a Google home page. Type in the number "1" in a text field.
Open a second Google (or whatever) page, type in a "2" in a text field.
Do this all the way up to 7 open pages.
Then start hitting "Command-`." If you just hit Command-` repeatedly and do nothing else, you will indeed rotate through the windows like so: 7-6-5-4-3-2-1-7-6-5-4-3.....etc.
NOW HERE'S THE TEST. In the middle of this cycle, close window #4. What happens next to you? In the "old" Safari, you'd keep cycling backwards through the windows 3-2-1-7-6-5-3-2-1-7...etc.
But in Safari 5.0, this what happens to me: After closing window #4, I "bounce back" and now I'm heading in the opposite direction, so that after closing the window #4 it goes 5-6-7-1-2-3-5-6-7-1...etc.
Continue the test by now closing window #6 when you get back to it. Once again, you will "bounce" backwards. So that you will be going 1-2-3-5-6-[close window 6]-5-3-2-1-7-5-3...etc.!
Tell me: is that how Safari behaves for you? (Or anyone reading this?) If so, then my Safari isn't "broken," it's behaving exactly as it is designed to be behaving.
So if that is the case (which I suspect), then my question is not how to "fix" Safari, because fixing it won't alter the behavior, but rather: Are there are settings that can be changed or keyboard shortcuts altered or whatever that can restore the "old Safari" way of behaving?
