Dust under screen in new Thunderbolt Display

Hi All,
I've had my Thunderbolt display since launch day. I've started to notice that it has a few dust particles under the screen.
So my question is 2 fold:
1. Is this display suppose to be air tight? Am I suppose to expect this?
2. What can I do about it?

I had the same issue.  I don't believe it is meant to be air tight due to having the speakers on the bottom which allows particles to potentially enter.  I took mine to the Apple Store(I know, lugging a big, heavy sreen is a pain in the butt) and learned that the screen is held on by magnets and it took them just a few seconds to remove and clean the screen.
They did recommend not trying to remove the screen on my own because it is extremely expensive to replace.

  • Brand new Thunderbolt display shuts off randomly

I've had a new ThunderBolt Display for less than a month paired with a brand-new Mac Mini (2.6 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel HD Graphics 4000)
and the display just began shutting off randomly.
I also have an external HD drive daisy chained via the display's Thunderbolt port that stops working once the display dies. Tried connecting the Mac Mini alone with no hard drive figuring it might be the drive but no the display still randomly shuts off. Any ideas or suggestions before I call Applecare?

I have a similar setup and problem. My Thunderbolt display (refurb, purchased in February 2012) will randomly turn off, as if it went to sleep - but mouse/keyboard input does not wake it back up. The internal speakers will still output audio. Disconnecting/reconnecting the Thunderbolt cable from the attached Mac Mini (2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5, OS X 10.7.5, AMD Radeon HD 6630M ) will not resolve the issue. Disconnecting/reconnecting the display's power cord and the Thunderbolt cable from the Mac Mini will resolve the issue temporarily. This began happening maybe a month or two ago, and has probably happened 10 times in the last 30 days. It is completely random, and I have yet to be able to duplicate it on demand.
Steps taken to attempt to fix the issue:
    Confirmed Energy Saver Settings
Confirmed Software up to date (OS 10.7.5)
Attempted Firmware Updates (message states not needed)
    Reset NVRAM
    Reset SMC (unplugging computer)

Since I'm still under warranty, I took my display to a Genius Bar today. The rep didn't really seem to want to hear about what I found on these discussion boards. He says you can pretty much find anything you want to find here, and since it is unmoderated it is not a reliable source of information. I let him know that the issue (as far as I can tell) occurs with different models of Mac Mini's, MB Pros & MB Airs, suggesting it is in fact an issue with the display and not what's connected to it. I added that most folks who reported bringing the displays in for service ultimately ended up with a replacement display, as the service done on the defective display proved to not resolve the issue - but I would of course defer to his judgement.
He decided that they would order and replace the LCD panel. He assured me they would keep the display powered on for 12-24 hours after the service to ensure the issue has been resolved. Truthfully, I am not optimistic. And for the amount it costs to replace the panel ($833.32 from the provided estimate), I speculate this course of action will end up being much more costly for them in the long run. But we shall see!
I will be sure to provide updates as they come.  Wish me luck!

  • Have a new thunderbolt display that is not working

Just set up a new thunderbolt display all is connected but screen does not function?

Is the Mac you connected it to compatible with it?
Only Macs with a Thunderbolt port and Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later are compatible with the Thunderbolt display.
Your profile says you have a Mac Pro. The Mac Pro does not yet have Thunderbolt ports, and hence is not compatible with the Thunderbolt Display.
You should instead look to buy the LED Cinema Display: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC007LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ

  • Does the new Thunderbolt display have any advantages over the current 27" iMac

Other than being 3kg lighter and including a sub (2.1 stereo system) rather than just stereo speakers, are there any advantages of the new Thunderbolt display over the current 27" iMac?
We need a new desktop very soon, and will eventually upgrade to an Mac Pro (not until a post Lion version comes out with Thunderbolt built in).  We were contemplating a MacMini Server and a Thunderbolt display, but for only a little extra (weight and cash) we could get a more powerfull 27" iMac.  Are there any benefits of the Thunderbolt display that are not included in the top end 27" iMac?  I'm assuming it's just the same 27" LED backlit TFT LCD with IPS...
In the end we would probably end up using the iMac or display as a display for a Mac Pro (we're photographers), so if there are significant benefits of the Thunderbolt Display, we'll just get it with the Mini as a stopgap.

The only real advantage of the new 27" ACD is that you can easily move it from one unit to another (Mini to MBP to Pro, etc).  If you bought a 27" iMac you could always hook up another display to the iMac and run dual monitors fairly easily.
The advantage of the Pro is that you can add a bigger video card, lots more RAM and up to 4 hard drives.  If you plan on buying a Pro as soon as it comes out, get the Mini, if not get the iMac (it will save you a bit of space over a ACD and a Mini).  I think the real question is, what do you think you are going to use more in the future.
And yes, the 27" iMac and the 27" ACD use the same IPS screen.

  • IMac and new Thunderbolt displays

Has anyone seen anything on the max number of monitors with the 2011 iMac and the new Thunderbolt displays?  Theoretically you could hook up 4 external monitors using the new Thunderbolt monitor + the 27' iMac display for a total of 5, 27' monitors.  The Thunderbolt monitor was just announced and hasn't been released yet so maybe an Apple insider can answer the question.

    Yes.  See question 14

  • Can Minidisplay Port work with the new Thunderbolt Display?

    I have a 2009 MBP 15 inch with Mindisplayport.
Can Minidisplay Port work with the new Thunderbolt Display?
If not, is there any adaptor i can use to make it work.
I also have the new MBA with thunderbolt socket.
Cannot decide which display to get.
    Thanks.

Here's a new article that basically covers and clears up all the new Thunderbolt display questions (same things I previously stated).
    Enjoy!!

  • When a new thunderbolt display?

My money for new display stays on my account just waiting for new thunderbolt display to arrive. Why does apple not want my money?
More resolution, HDMI, USB3, Two thunderbolt, imac design and im ready to transfer some moneys.

Not sure the new one will provide much more.  I have the current model.  It has 2.0 USB, firewire and Thunderbolt ports.  I have it conncted to a Mini that has 4-3.0 USB, HDMI and TB port.  More than I will ever need.  The new one will have the same resolution as the present design.

  • HT3249 new thunderbolt display unresponsive

I've just plugged my new thunderbolt display into my new macbook pro but the display is dead. (its connected by to the macbook by power and cable, and the display is plugged into the wall) Anyone had any problems like this?

try a different tb port and plug your monitor into a different electrical socket
if still nothing, call apple and/or store for an exchange

  • What are the actual dimensions of the new Thunderbolt Display without the stand (e.g., when using a VESA mount)?

I need to use the new Thunderbolt Display without the stand on a VESA mount, but before I order it I need to make sure it will fit height-wise in the allotted space.

The ThunderBolt display specs page has the same sizes listed as the 27" LED Cinema Display specs page (web archive).  I just measured my Cinema Display for you and the height of the display itself without the stand is 15 5/8".  However, you will need some additional space at the bottom for air flow intake.  These displays get hot and need proper ventilation so do not block the vents on the bottom.  Also the bottom vents are where the speakers are.
    Hope this helps.

  • Dead pixel or dust under screen

I purchased ipad mini at staples.ca recently and just realized the screen has small factory defect, either a dead pixel or dust under screen. Seems just passed staples.ca's refund exchange period. what can apple do?

I would bring it to your nearest apple store or AASP and have them look at it.  We can not predict what Apple may or may not do.  good luck.

  • Dust under screen of Qosmio X500

    Hi
I purchased a Qosmio X500 from Saudi Arabia in april last year and Ive brought it to india where I currently reside. Last week while randomly cleaning my screen I noticed few specks of dust within (underneath) the lcd/led panel. This does not hinder my work on the machine, nor do I face any other performance issues. but the very presence of these dust particles beneath the gorgeous 18" screen is becoming an eyesore.
I hardly take the laptop outside or use in harsh or dusty environments. I have an EMEA warranty that's valid upto April 2015 and I was planning to ship the laptop back to Saudi Arabia to get it rectified. Any suggestions on this regard would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and Warm Regards
    Dr Hidayath Ansari

    Hi
I've taken my laptop to the authorised service center in Jeddah and they claim that the dust under screen is completely my fault.
The technicians say that it will cost me 1600 Saudi riyals to get the screen replaced even though its under warranty which is really unfortunate becuase the laptop has never be taken out of the office and there is hardly any dust in the room.
Iam a very careful user and in the last two years there is no a single scratch on this device.
Is there any place I can sent a mail to escalate this issue and get it rectified at least under goodwill or even if I have to pay the service charges.

  • New Thunderbolt Displays - shop abroad?

    Howdy everyone.
Being a UK customer (and student), buying the new Thunderbolt displays isn't cheap as the price in the UK works out at £899 but with student discount (12%), it works out at roughly £800. However, according to a MacTrust report, the new Thunderbolt displays on the US Apple site are selling for $999, which when converted to pounds works out at £625. Being a lot cheaper, is it worth going to the US Apple site to buy this or are there any differences reguarding sockets/plugs which wouldn't be any use of in the UK? It all sounds viable, but almost too good to be true. Lend me some of your views on this one please!
And here's the report if any of you missed it. - http://www.mactrast.com/2011/09/apple-now-shipping-27-thunderbolt-displays-to-st ores/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+mactrast+%28Mac Trast%29&utm_content=FaceBook
    Many thanks,
    Sam

Currently Apple is not selling a USB-C to Thunderbolt adaptor, they are selling HDMI and VGA adaptors on the website.
You will need to wait until the adaptor is available before you can connect the new MB. Maybe a third party will create the adaptor.
In the meantime I would not buy the new MB

  • HT5219 New Thunderbolt display

Take it in for repair or replacement.

  • Dust under screen and Dead Pixels on new MBP...

I got a new Macbook and, aside from the fact that it was missing the P key, there was a new manufacturing defect I hadn't seen before, (must be from the new process), wherein dust was trapped behind the glass screen.
The Apple Store was great about letting me exchanging it, no problem. Then I realized that I needed firewire so I returned the new and unopened Macbook replacement to upgrade to a MacBook Pro, but now I'm disheartened, because the new MacBook Pro, though a thing of beauty, has a bright dead pixel in the top middle screen, as well as a dimmer dead pixel 2 inches to the left of that one.
I just bought the computer a few hours ago.
Do you think I have a shot at them replacing it tomorrow? I hate to think of staring at this, (bright) dead pixel for three years, (not to mention the other dimmer dead pixel).
    Thanks!

Yep, I too did a custom order wtih everything I could get on it. And sad to say, like many iphones I have gotten, it too had dust under the display. It also was about 10 different yellow flecks under the glass. Customer service gave me no fuss really and I have sent it off and am awaiting a new one now. However, it is frustrating that this makes it out of the factory in the first place. Quality control should have seen this, especially when I am looking at buying 2 more shortly. It is my first actual mac purchase aside from the numerous other accories I have bought for PC use. However, with vista being the garbage that it is, I am having mac withdrawls now. ***** when you use something that works and then revert back.
I also noticed the battery lid was a little loose on the laptop. Hopefully this is a isolated thing as well. It does take about another week and a half from what I am told to get the replacement. Kinda ***** to have to wait, but I am sure it will be worth it.
