  • HT4589 How do I move video clip clip up or down after setting letterbox, i used to be able to do this until i upgraded to 10.0.6

I used to be able to manually move my video clip up and down in the event the browser using one of the settings. It was a vertical settings that i would use to pull a video clip down after i applied a letterbox to the clip, so I could see the top of the the video clip that got blocked out by the letterbox. Still looking no luck....I used to be able to do this just upgraded to FCPX 10.0.6 now i dont have the setting..

think i might have solved my own problem the feature is not there i have to upgrade again to 10.0.7...this is getting annoying...

  • Need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD

    Hello
Can anyone tell me the settings I need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD. I am mixing other 4:3 letterbox content. Evertime I make an mpeg with Quicktime conversion it is squeezed. I want it to be letterbox in 4:3
    Thanks in advance.
I am using Final Cut Pro 4.5 and DVD pro 3

    Dana Gonzales

In addition to using the advice above, make sure in Compressor (or other item you use to encode) that you are using the 16:9 encode ratio. If you are using QT conversion (which it sounds like from Final Cut?) also make sure that ratio is checked. Unlike a 4:3 m2v which will be 720 x 480 when you open it in QT, the 16:9 will be 720 x 404

  • Why is iMovie 6.0.3 vertically letterboxing clips that were created at 360x180?

I'm trying to import stock clips from istockphoto.com and some will import at that resolution, others are importing with vertical letterboxes as though they were PAL or NTSC, squashing the image vertically. I've tried starting with DV Widescreen and both HDV options that iMovie HD gives me.
Is there a workaround for this bug that I can't find after hours of scouring the web? Is there another iMovie version I can upgrade to with at 10.4.11 OS ? I realize my OS is practically ancient in computer time (4 years!!!) but I have no Intel processor. If you haven't passed out yet from my outdatedness, any helpful help would be appreciated.
    Can anyone help? Please?
    Thank you!

    Hi, Bengt,
+I think there is a difference between 6.0.3 and 6.0.4. Had problems with 0.3 after+
    +installing iLife08 that was OK after 6.0.4 up-grade. (PPC dG5)+
    That's why I said 'reportedly.'
I think you are correct. I, too, am suspicious of a difference, and I also downloaded version 6.0.4. I did the download as soon as I saw it on Apple's site after getting my new iMac.
I did have the prior iM6 version that I ported over from my old iMac, too. I am sure that I transferred all my old stuff before downloading 6.0.4, but I didn't run into any problems with it not installing.

  • Need widescreen, not letterbox, when hooking up to TV through composite

I've read a few unanswered posts on this subject. I have a macbook that I want to hook up to a HDTV through a mini-DVI to composite adaptor. When I do this it restricts the available resolutions to letterbox (4:3) resolutions (640x480, 1024x768, etc..). What do I have to do to get this to work properly? I know for a fact that you can put 16:9 through composite cuz thats how my wii is hooked up and its fine.
    Side note:
It seems like every time I hook up a mac to a new monitor/TV this same problem occurs. Whoever came up with the idea of restricting resolutions at apple need a swift kick in the pants.

This sounds similar to a limitation of the Intel mini. Oddly the G4 mini with ATI graphics had no problem outputting wide format video from the Apple to S-Video adapter. So I guess the limitation is in the Intel driver. Certainly other Macs have no problem putting out S-video and composite video in wide formats.
You may be able to get around the Intel driver limitation using SwitchRes X, but I'm not sure of it. Basically you would start with a standard timing like 800 x 600 and make a custom scaled timing from it. The result would still be a 4:3 timing but the video inside that format would be wide, if that makes sense. Then you would set your TV to a wide mode and that would restore "square pixels" so to speak.
Again, I don't know if that would work or not. The Intel driver might intervene and not let SRX build the kind of timing I am describing.

  • How can I get AirPlay mirroring to fill widescreen? It works automatically for apps built for apple tv, but not Hulu Plus, for example, which letterboxes.

Airplay mirroring works great for apps (mostly video-related ones) with native Apple TV support, but for other apps - most notably Hulu Plus, it will only show letterbox on my 16:9 plasma TV. Again, my movies, tv shows and in-app videos like in CNN where there's a built-in AirPlay support will fill my widescreen, but apps that don't (Hulu Plus, games, photos) will not. Do I have to change the aspect ratio on the tv to 4:3? Will changing the resolution help.
How can I get mirroring to fill the entire tv screen, regardless of the app? Thanks.

Guys. Let's not get confused here.
-AirPlay mirroring feature 'mirrors' what's on your iPad 2 or above or your iPhone 4s on to your big TV via the Apple TV black box.
-Video apps that stream video (like native YouTube app) uses AirPlay which is different to mirroring.
-When you use the 'mirror' feature you get black bars all around (left/right & top/bottom)
-There are Games that use the full screen via the AirPlay mirroring feature and there are games that don't. It depends on the Game. For example download Asphalt 7:Heat and you'll notice you get widescreen display on the big TV but if you play Batman or Max Payne or others that don't support AirPlay mirroring then it you get black bars left and right.
-What's neat about the AirPlay mirror feature is that when you play Asphalt 7 with 'mirroring' set to on, the race is shown on the TV while your iPad shows something completely different (the route in real time with your rear view mirror)
-The Apple iPhoto app on your iPhone 4s or iPad 2/3 with AirPlay mirroring feature on you get a different experience. All of a sudden it goes full screen, and you are presented with their iPhoto logo.
-Those who have the first generation iPad don't have mirroring capabilities so the Asphalt 7:Heat games feature aren't available or the iPhoto app features. With iPad 1 you can only stream video or music or image slideshow (which all stream full screen). iPad 2 and iPad 3 can also do this but with the added benefit of 'mirorring' what is displayed on the iPad screen. Some apps take advantage of this, some don't.
There are no special setting on Apple TV to get rid of the black bars. You may be able to change the zoom settings on your actual big TV.
Hopefully this will clear this all up. I have the iPad 1 and recently upgraded to the new iPad 3. I also have an iPhone 4s. Same issues.
I don't think the AirPlay 'mirror' feature has developed fully yet. It has it's limitations but also has its advantages.

  • Is there any way to export 2.35 Anamorphic source to a 16x9 letterboxed frame WITH timecode or text overlays?

I have been trying to export temp cuts of an anamorphic project (2.35:1) in a letterboxed 16:9 frame with timecode and text overlays and other Additional Video Effects. Converting the 2.35 to 16x9 has been a breeze with the Preserve Aspect Ratio option in Cropping & Padding . The problem is that the black bars that that puts in the 16:9 frame appear OVER any of the Additional Video Effects, thus covering them up.
E.g. if I select a Text Overlay and place it in the Center, I can see it just fine. But if I want it Upper Left, Title Safe, it is covered by the black space of the Letterboxing. So the Additional Video Effects are getting added, they are just getting covered by the letterboxing. You can even see the very edge of the text in the Title Safe position, peeking out from behind the letterboxing, which is, of course, frustrating .
Thus far it's been a two-step process: letterbox the anamorphic source, then add TC and other video effects in a second job.
So - is there any way to do this in ONE step? It would really help my anamorphic workflow.
    (apologies for the lengthy question.)
    [I'm using FCPX 10.1.3 & Compressor 4.1.3, in OSX 10.9.5 on Retina MBP, Late 2013, w/  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB]

    Thanks for the reply Russ.
Yes, I've considered adding titles and/or generators in the FCPX storyline, but this creates a need to render the entire timeline. As I'm juggling library locations and hard drive spaces I just didn't want to add a new render that will occupy a lot of space. It's also a bit of visual clultter for me, so my goal is to find the best workflow for adding this stuff on or after export.

  • Where did the letterbox offset adjustment go?

I've just updated FCPX, and after I applied the letterbox effect, I expected to see the offset adjustment slider, but there's no adjustment at all that I can see.
Is there a new way to do this that I can't find?

You can use my Widescreen Matte adjustment layer as an alternative. It works as a seperate layer so you can reposition your video underneath it as much as you want.
It's a free download from my blog.

  • Even on widescreen letterbox 16:9, still losing some edges

O.K. here's the deal. I'm burning a DVD of footage that's a 720p, converted to SD. I think all the settings are correct for 16 by 9 Widescreen Letterbox, but when I watch the DVD back on the player I notice that some of the image is still being cropped a little on the sides. The reason this is unacceptable is that I have a shot where a character walks to the edge of the frame, but stays there on the screen. In the DVD they disappear off the screen. Is there a way to control the aspect ratio even more so that I can shrink the size of the footage on the screen to a point where I can see everything?

What you guys are running into has nothing to do with a software problem. It is what is known as overscan in video. Every television will project the image beyond the edge of the viewable area of the screen. This has always been a bit of an issue, but knowing that it happens is the key to success.
Final Cut and any other NLE will show you this area if you activate the Title Safe indicator in the canvas. It will show you two green boxes at the edge of the screen. The inner box is the title safe; where you should keep titles within. The outer box is the Action Safe, or Overscan area. This tells you where most televisions will cut the image off at. This is meant as a guide to help you know where you can place things. The problem is that videos or DVD on a computer monitor ignores this little fact and shows you the entire edge. I have know idea why this was done because it's such a huge discrepancy with what has been an established standard.
Unfortunately for your film where you have your actor at the edge of the screen there's not a lot you can do. the only way to really correct for this is to shoot with overscan in mind in the first place or you might try to shrink the entire film in the frame a bit - which will give you black space on either side.
Look up overscan on Wikipedia for a ton about what is going on.
    Hope this helps.

  • Letterboxing and Aspect Ratio problem

I'm authoring a feature film DVD. All menus and movies are 16:9
When I play the Simulator in "16:9" everything is fine.
When I play the Simulator in "4:3 Letterbox" my menus are letterboxed as desired, however every movie is for some reason squished into 4:3.
    Any ideas?
The Video Asset box in the Inspector tells me all my movies are 720x480 16:9.
All tracks show in the Track Inspector as display mode 16:9 Letterbox.
All Menus show in the Menu Inspector as Aspect Ratio 16:9
Also of note, one of my tracks is used both as a movie and as a motion menu. Although it's the same track, with the simulator in 4:3 it's correctly letterboxed as a menu, yet squished as a movie!
I exported from a 16:9 Anamorphic project in FCP (as a QTmovie set to Anamorphic NTSC DV) and imported straight into DVD Studio Pro. (I've noticed on these forums most people go through Compressor. I didn't. Would that be the cause of my headache?)
The movies display in my QuickTime Player as 16:9 clips with a size of 853x480

The Simulator is very far from accurate. Burn a disc, then pop it into a DVD player.

  • Workflow sd letterbox to 16:9 hd through iohd?

Hi.  Let me preface this with saying I've waited three years to be able to do the following workflow to get a hardware upres of my feature film affordably as using a teranex etc. was out of reach for me and I didn't want to throw my money away on editing houses when I preferred to acquire equipment and do this on my own...first I lucked out with getting an iohd on ebay, and then someone at b&h kindly told me about the ninja that had been invented and that I signed up and patiently waited for production on...this week I got a secondhand hdv recorder so now I'm ready to go.  I was told along the way that I couldn't do this without a lot of money or a software alternative upres that wasn't acceptable for me...and I came up with this workflow but I have one last bug I'm wondering if any of you out there can help me with!
The original film was shot on a dvx100 in 4:3 and letterboxed.  The file that I edited, and later could see output through my iohd to hd image on my flat screen as one of my monitors...I now plan to capture on the ninja as a pro res 422 hq file that I'll then throw back on fcp for preparation for hd files, one of which I'll output to an hvr-m15au as hdv1080i or 720p!
I have prepared various files and realized the ninja recognized the files uncompressed at 8 and 10 bit and not in rgb (?) when output from the iohd through hdmi...so I have ready uncompressed letterbox and uncompressed anamorphic set-up for digibeta or just 720x480 rather than 720x486...but I've decided on choosing the file I had ready for digibeta which seems to match the specs closer for hd.
The aja output is in 1080i 29.97 (for some reason the ninja only recognizes the signal as 59.97) and/or 720p 59.97.
    But HERE'S MY QUESTION!
I get, of course a full screen capture of my anamorphic file that can then be recognized on the digital tv as 16:9 if I choose a "full" setting...is this the best solution considering the original source if I want to have at the end a full 16:9 picture onscreen...or is there a way to do all this and have a true 16:9 and at what point in the workflow would I do this "cropping" and if I do that am I back to square one with deterioration of image??????  I do have broadcast opportunities down the road with a distributor who is still pitching my film in its sd format and as well...I'd like to also fiddle around with blu-ray authoring on my own once I capture these files.
I'm also a little perplexed as to why I'm not seeing the stretched files on the ninja monitor out of the iohd when I choose the stretch options in the iohd which would solve the problem but that's not what's happening.
Thank you for your input or multiple suggestions on this...and for the naysayers out there who have said "why bother upresing at all"...you'd have to see the finished film output as hd on a monitor to know that answer and to recognize the reality that people will choose download or buying hd product or blu-ray, not to mention the broadcasters who want deliverables for some platforms on hdcam or other hd formats...and love of full screen ability of picture...the iohd is a wonderful tool that, before I owned it, I didn't think I could ever afford to have an upres of my film that would be acceptable...so now the green pasture is in sight and I'd appreciate any last suggestions on this last question as to the best workflow to get the finished picture to open 16:9 without it being anamorphic or if this is not a wise solution...if indeed there's such a thing as hd anamorphic as acceptable for broadcast which I think isn't the case (though I'm aware worse comes to worse the hd letterbox is probably ok but I still want to know how to do this).
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!  Apple boards has helped me through the technical crazies and appreciate all input I get which has helped me learn and do things I never thought I could do or that others have said I can't do that I've accomplished with this simple footage...in any case HELP once I get through all of this I'll be moving completely away from SD and will never deal with this stuff again...(except of course with my other "legacy footage" arghhhh).

OK I did one pass and recorded a file on the ninja that was uncompressed anamorphic wide...but apparently I guess I was doing something wrong  with my iohd before because going back...I was able to take the uncompressed 4:3 letterbox and this time the iohd indeed output the file as a zoom wide which now appears like it was a little stretched vertically but not very noticeable but then I decided maybe it would look better using the anamorphic digibeta file because of the lines being 720x486 out and indeed I was able to do this as a full 16:9 output this time with it set to down anamorphic up zoom letterbox on the iohd and it appears this did the trick as it's exact matching proportions I see on my ntsc monitor...
Anyway, am I doing this right?  It appears now I've succeeded in making a full 16:9  file as a pro res 422 hq 1080i file from a 720x486 uncompressed 10 bit anamorphic fcp file that was created from what started as a letterbox 4:3 ntsc dvcam rgb file that was dropped into an anamorphic timeline.
I'll report how it looks once it's back in fcp on my large screen tv and after I output it to the hdv recorder.

  • 16:9 letterboxed project questions

This is my first 16:9 project and it's a little confusing...
My source footage is cropped to 16:9 aspect ratio from 4:3 but it's not anamorphic, it's only letterboxed. The frame size came out to be 720X404 when cropped and compressed with Compressor. Is that right? can I use this .m2v file in DSP or I HAVE to use anamorphic for widescreen SD DVD. My source footage is in a single field MJPEG A format rendered out from Final Fut Pro with a 4:3 aspect ratio letterboxed to 16:9.
I made a test burn, just dropping it on the first play and setting the track to 16:9 letterbox, I set everything to 16:9. It played the right way on 2 different computers, letterboxing it on 4:3 monitors and playing full screen on the 16:9 monitor, but it didn't play back the right way on a portable Panasonic player with a 16:9 screen. It letterboxed it and even with the wide screen setting on the machine kept the letterbox, so it got squeezed.
What I would like is to play back letterboxed on 4:3 systems including the menu, and to play full screen on 16:9 systems automatically. I don't want to make different versions of the menu for the different aspect ratios.
How would I do this? Do I make my menus in 853X480 and import it to DSP. I'm making the menus in After Effects and Photoshop.
    please help.
    David

Yes it is the continuation of the same project, but that post was already check as resolved, so I opened a new post.
Yes there is a reason with working Motion JPEG, the film was deinterlaced with a special plugin and processed with other effects also, as a matter of fact the whole timeline is for some reason in Motion JPEG.
What they are giving me is a 720X480 4:3 aspect ratio master in Motion JPEG A format, single field and letterboxed. They had to letterbox it to adjust the different shots to it. The source material for this project was a mess, all different cameras, some letterboxed, some not, some progressive some not... It's a real challenge to make them look somewhat similar. That is why was processed with many plugins. The whole thing is rendered out to one big file.
I took this material to Compressor and tried to make a .m2v file, cropped out the letterbox, set the size to 720X480 anamorphic but for some reason it didn't stretch it for me but made a file with a 720X404 size.
    I'm using FCS 2, DVDSP 4.2.0, Compressor 3.0
    I really appreciate your help
    David

  • Aspect ratio on widescreen tv - letterboxed

This has been brought up before, and there always seems to be the same answer…'its a setting on the tv/dvd to correct to play 16:9'…I have an SD widescreen anamorphic video that displays on tv as letterboxed and stretched, but yet the main menu of the dvd from DVDSP4 displays perfectly. There is no setting adjustment for display on the DVD. The display setting on the tv is set to 16:9. I'm baffled here. How can the main menu display right but the vid asset is stretched and letterboxed? I worked in FCP6 and exported to QT movie….from there I dumped it into DVDSP4 and created what I thought was a standard 16:9 dvd. Thoughts,…ideas…suggestions?

You also have to mind the display setting on the DVD player appliance.
At home I have an Insignia (Best Buy) DVD player and a Playstation 2. Both of these appliances were originally hooked up to 4:3 TVs, and now they're hooked up to 16:9 TVs. Just to make matters more fun, the Playstation 2 has a setting that applies to games and a setting that applies to DVDs. On the Insignia player, using the SETUP button on the DVD player's remote control, I set the display to 16:9. If I watch a 4:3 DVD on it (such as an old Bresson movie) I just change the TV's display setting (the TV's Dynex, also from Best Buy) and I haven't touched the DVD player's settings in years. Some Hollywood DVDs from 2009 and earlier have the previews at 4:3 and the main movie at 16:9, a mild nuisance.
In short, my advice to you is to make sure that both the TV and the DVD player are on the same page, so to speak, on aspect ratio. If that doesn't work, you might be dealing with a holdover glitch that also affects Windows Media Player; let us know the brand of your TV and DVD player.

  • DVCPro 50 letterboxed opening in my timeline without the letterboxing

    Hi
I have a project with DVCPro 50 clips letterboxed and when I open them in my timeline the image fills the entire area becoming anamorphic. Do I have to use the distort option in the clips attributes? Or is there a setting to solve perhaps a different codec.
    Thanks

Sounds like your sequence is set to Anamorphic.
In FCPs menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup > DVCPro 50 > Setup.
Then, Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset. DVCPro 50 should already be selected, click OK to confirm. Edit your clips into this sequence.

  • ?letterboxing issue.. probably a newbie question, sorry

Sorry if this has been discussed before.
Very new to macs (former PC user)
I have a MacMini with 10.4.xx (cant remember the next #) with 2g ram and intel processor.
Making a slideshow in IMovie and buring in IDVD.
I have made two different slideshows and each has (what I think is) letterboxing issues.
The 16:9 formatted show did not letter box on a standard 4:3 tv (confirmed settings on dvd players and multiple tvs).
I just did a 4:3 slideshow and it appears normal on the computer, but the final product seems to 'zoom' in slightly and cuts off the top 5% of the images (which, unfortunately cuts some faces off...).
In IDVD, i have the 4:3 setting checked.
Is there something I am missing ???

    Thanks Robert...
I'm pretty involved with home theater already, so I previously checked all the settings on the TVs and DVD players - assuming that was the issue. I tried various standard def Tvs and HDTVs/projectors... But, everything is set up as it should. I verified the problem on multiple TV sets, and multiple DVD players - even tried changing all the picture mode settings.... no luch with either of my projects.
I am now assuming IDVD is creating the problem... and since I am very new to mac's, was looking for advice here.

  • Export in HD 1280x720 16:9 without letterbox

I use a Canon HG20 and want to fit YouTube's widescreen with no letterbox but I can't seem to export in HD without a letterbox. A tutorial video said to use these settings
Key frames - Every 30 frames
    Data rate - Restrict to 1800 kbits/sec
    Dimensions - HD 1280x720 16:9
    Deinterlace source video
This is what I use, but there's a letterbox and there isn't supposed to be. It messes up the dimensions very much. How can I export with no letterbox?

AHA! That would be your problem. The actual clip is 1440x1080, but you were using a 720x480 DV-NTSC sequence. When HD media is placed in a SD sequence, it is scaled down and letterboxes are added.
Here's what you have to do:
    1. Select the sequence in the browser.
    2. Go to +Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset > Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60+. Select it and click OK.
    3. Now you drag your 1440x1080 footage to the sequence and edit, etc.
    4. Export using the 1280x720 settings described above.
Unless I am very much mistaken, this should fix your problem.
