DV AVI codec issue

Hi all, I have a good one for you:
I have AVIs shot on a camcorder and captured to AVI through Premiere.  Gspot told me that they are DVSD DVC/DV format files.  Play fine in Windows, VLC and even in the preview.
But none will open in QTX.  I have researched and have delete, installed, uninstalled and re-installed DIVX, Flip4Mac, Perian, etc. Tried Low-Res mode. Tried 32 bit mode. Still the missing codec window.  But they still play on the preview (spacebar in Finder).  Go Figure.
Is it as simple as a specific codec I've yet to identify?  I love this mac but this is the kind of stuff for which I ran away from Windows.
If anyone has any tips or I need to be more specific, let me know!

Thanks Jon.  That expalins the QL discrepancy. I had experimented with simply changing the extension from .avi to .mov but it did not work. If there is more to it than a simple extension change I am game to try!
Changing the extension may or may not work. It depends on what the player application is checking—just the extension or the file internals. I usually recommend copying the data to a "real" MOV file container rather than just changing the extension. Even then, I don't know if this is enough to satisfy the QT X player in this case. It is, however, one of the first things I'd try.
Here is one example of how things may vary. If I take a VOB file from a non-encrypted DVD and try to play it in QT X v10.2, the file will refuse to open. Take the same file and it will open in QT 7 on my system and play the "muxed" MPEG-2 video but not the "muxed" AC3 audio. If I change the extension to MOV, the file still won't open in the QT X player, but I get a message saying I may need additional software to open the file but now the MOV file will not open at all in the QT 7 player. However, if I change the file expension to mpg, the VOB file now opens and plays normally in the QT X player and plays the same in the QT 7 player as it does with the VOB file extension. To make things more confusing, I can take the VOB file and demux it to M2V and AC3 elementary file streams and both audio and video will play in both the QT X and QT 7 players as independent files on my system. But if I merge the M2V video and AC3 audio to a single MOV file container and try to play it in the QT X player I am back to getting the "may need additional software" message while the QT 7 player now plays both the video and the audio. On the other hand, if I demux the VOB file to M2V and AIFF elementary file streams, then the files are automatically played as a linked resource reference in the QT 7 player, but play as independent files in the QT X player.
I hope this was confusing enough for you. Basically, all I am trying to do here is demonstrate how the playback of content can vary depending on the file extensions, file container, or player app even when the data is still in the same compression format albeit muxed or unmuxed. This is why I hesitate to say what will or will not happen with your DV AVI file until I can actually evaluate it on my own system.
I want to post a sample of my old videos so if anyone is interested they can have a look....but I could not figure out how to - the "insert video" link was greyed out.  As a substitute, here is the screenshot of the file in gspot:
Unfortunately, Apple has never really activated the ability post videos directly to the forum using the forum software. The normal work flow is to either send the sample file as an email attachment, send it peer-to-peer via IM, or post it to a server or NAS drive that can be opened to internet access usually by username and password. In any case, the file data you imaged looks like a standard DV-25 file containing DV/DV audio/video which is normally exported in the DV file container on a Mac as opposed to DVCPRO-25 normally exported as DV/AIFF to an MOV file container. Based on this assumption, I would normally try opening the AVI source file using QT 7 (keyed for "Pro" use on my system) for playback and/or conversion. Would also normally assume the AVI file could easily be converted to H.264/AAC or H.264/AAC/AC3 content in MP4 or M4V file containers by the free HandBrake app if all you want is QT, mobile device (iPad, iPhone, Ipod Classic), and/or TV playback compatibility.
All of the video footage in question is still on DV tape.  If I were to re-encode, this time to a new format, what would you suggest for future compatiblity with QT and editing software like iMovie?
Assuming the camcorder is iMovie compatible, I would use iMovie to import the files directly into the iMovie app and let it manage the Event folders. That way the raw data is immediately available for editing and should avoid any secondary or intermediate data conversions.

  • No audio on downloaded movies, codec issue???

    Hello,
I hope I am in the right section to post this question, apologies if I am not. I have recently downloaded a few movies and mini series via a torrent website that have saved on my hard drive as avi files. The visual is perfect, however I have no audio. Is there a way to fix this? someone has told me that it may be a codec issue, although I do not know what to do to fix this, or what application I need to retrieve the audio. I have had a look on version tracker, but don't fully understand what the whole codec thing does.
If more info is needed, please post back. sorry if this is a no brainer issue!
I really appreciate any suggestions/info to help me out.
    thanks!

Ok, so now I have another problem. a couple of the previous items I had downloaded were playing fine, audio and all, and now I have gone back to play these movies again to test the sound, and the sound has stopped on these now too! I have no idea what is going on with this. I am using quicktime to playback the movies, if that helps.
    thank you!

  • CS4 - need to export file type: avi codec: XviD

I just downloaded the 30-day trial for PremierePro CS4 as I was having difficulty maintaining saturation when converting with Premiere Elements 4.0.  I was told that I could export my files in PremierePro CS4 with the specs I need, but I don't know how.  Specs I need are:
    Dimensions:  1360 x 768
    File Type:  .AVI
    Codec:  XviD
    30 Frames per second
I'm completely new to this so any help at all would be greatly appreciated.  I had downloaded some sort of XviD file online, and it added it to my export option, but it wouldn't do anything when I selected it and I would eventually have to close down PremierePro.  I've since removed the XviD program from my computer in case the program itself was corrupted.

I find that the DivX (commercial version of Xvid) encoder works fine, when that is the desired delivery format/CODEC. Fortunately, I do not have to do much of this, but it works.
    Good luck,

I have tried importing it but I'm running into CODEC issues eeven though it's a .mov.  What can I do?

  • Best AVI Codec

What is the best loseless avi codec for PP CS3?

Unless you need something complicated like 5.1 surround, just use WAV.

  • HT1536 .AVI codecs that support retina display.

    Is there one that works?

All was fine until the organiztion's PC went south (10years old). I am covering with my personal equipment until a replacement can be approved and aquired. As fate would have it I just recently replaced my dying MacBook Air with a !3' Retina MacBookPro.
Thanks for the apmplifying info. This is a "horse of a different color." Had thought you were referring to the "Retina" iPad. Platform display type should not make a difference, Mac OS X version, QT player version, and compression format(s) used in the AVI container make all the difference in the world here.
Basic question is whether or not you have installed Perian and the QT 7 player app on the new system. Perian plus the QT 7 player basically support most AVI compression formats currently compatible with Mac OS X operating systems. Remember AVI is a legacy file format that has not been supported by Microdoft for more than 11 years. Some PC codecs have never been transcoded for OS X or Mac Intel platform use, some AVI files simply cannot be played by the QT players.
I have been unable to get .avi video to play on the MacBook using QuickTime Player and Flip4Mac. Neither currently supports .AVI for Retina is my understanding. I am looking for a temporary solution to just time play .AVI files once and done.
The real question is "what compression formats are you trying to play?" and "in which QT player on your new system?" If both QT 7 and Perian are installed and if the QT X player cannot play the AVI file natively, it will normally ask the user if he or she wants to play the file in the QT 7 player. To further complicate matters, since the introduction of Lion, Apple has, by default, turned off legacy codecs used by the embedded QT structure which were normally used natively for AVI export.
If playback is all you are interested in, then VLC can be used for this purpose since it includes its own codec resources within the app. The QT 7 player plus the Perian codec package provides similar playback capabilities. On the other hand, if you want to play and/or convert common AVI codec content to QT compatible files without purchasing a commercial conversion app, then you can use Perian (for decoding) and either QT 7 Pro ($29 USD) or the free MPEG Streamclip app (for encoding to any available export codec for which your system is configured).

It is Vista. Doesn't support games that use hardware accelerated surround sound. Try to use the Alchemy software provided by Creative (for a fee for Audigy users, for free for X-Fi ones) if your games are on the ones that are supported - the ones that uses DirectX for sound.Unfortunately Half-Life2 uses a proprietary sound system and is not supported. The link is http://www.soundblaster.com/alchemy/ Warning: STUPIDLY long waiting time till all the stuff on that page is loading! The games that use OpenAL don't need Alchemy, will work fine under Vista.

  • RENDER and AVI and CODEC issues

I've ripped a DVD clip from Handbrake-- AVI file and Codec is AVC/H.264 video/MPS audio (that's how it is) and it will go into FCP ok and to the timeline. It needs rendered and so begins the problem.
It says, there's a "render error and not enough disk space/free up with render manager?" There's PLENTY of space. I deleted all rendering in the render manager for good measure and I have 350 internal GB of space and 500GB external HD. Room is not a problem.
Never had this problem before. Suggestions?

why is Final Cut giving me a Render error when I clearly have plenty of space and it's never done this before.
You converted the files to the wrong format...pure and simple. FCP doesn't like dealing with those codecs. I think it's bad that it even lets them work initially...because it leads people into the false belief that FCP will work with those formats.
The codec you chose is one FCP doesn't work with, that is why you have having issues. You need to convert to formats you find in the EASY SETUP list. ProRes is the HD codec of choice.
Trashing preferences won't help. You need to convert ALL of your footage to the proper format, give those new files the same names as the ones you are working with now....and relink to the new files. And then fix the sequence settings to match. THis is a big mess that will take effort to fix.

  • Avi codec pack for mac??

    Hi,
We have recently switched over a few mac machines and are slowly getting the hang of them. After having issues playing back avi's on the machine i have downloaded the Perian codec pack for mac which allows me to play the files in quicktime etc and get audio output. I still have the problem however that when imported into Premiere/Encore etc i get video but no audio??? I dont want to have to convert all the files into compatible mac files as i just want a codec to install which will play them and solve the problem. The files are DivX codec built.
I find it odd that files will play with audio in quicktime on the machine but not in the adobe software. Tried reading around this on the web but have turned up nothing after Perian that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ian

    Thanks Hunt,
You seem to reply to most of these posts, so thank you very much for giving up your time to help others, much appreciated.
I have both converted the files - in a rather drawn out way through a couple of freeware programs to give me an mp3 audio file macs don't seem to mind - and and burnt DVD's on mac and PC to check for quality on both machines.
We have to work with DivX a bit for clients to create conference openers etc and if they specify footage from the web etc its generally the only format we can get it in on short notice. Horrible but the way of the world it seems.
Currently running mac book pro's for on site edit machines on the highest specs available for purchase i.e. i7 processor 7200rpm internal hard drive etc and Adobe CS5 and have to say that the 'macs never fall over' hype isn't true. Apart from having their file preferences for use which is a pain when crossing projects over from both platforms i have found both new macs crash when worked hard using premiere, after effects and photoshop/illustrator. We find CS5 has far fewer bugs and is more stable than CS4 mind you.
I'm sure that may queue mac lovers to put me straight on the much fabled shiny machines however.
    Cheers, Ian

  • Premiere Elements 11 AVI Audio Issue

    Hey there,
I'm fairly new to this software and am playing around in it to get a feel so bear with me if I'm completely overlooking the source of my problem.
When I import my video to the editor, about an 8 minute .avi clip, the video plays at regular speed but the audio sounds like it's slowed immensly. (A low growl, can't tell if it's only bass or the audio slowed to 400% about.) I've tried speeding up the clip (audio included) and it just becomes a faster version of the slow growl audio. The original video plays fine in the clip organizer and in windows media. I've tried saving, rendering, etc. but it doesn't help. Non .avi clips seem to work fine, it's just the one's from my screen recorder (which may be the issue) that 'brake.' I hope someone understands what my problem is, any misunderstandings, feel free to ask.
    Thanks for your time, cheers.

  • Could a codec issue be my problem?

Hi Guys, something has occurred, seemingly overnight, and I am trying to troubleshoot the cause.  My workflow sees me render AVI from AE and then convert the AVI to mp4 or whatever in the AME.  The size of my AVI files usally mean a render in AME takes 2 or less minutes.  I have a grunty system so I can play the AVI without hassle.  Last night I noticed the render time in AME was much slower than it should be, I know the render times of these comps and it was considerably slower.  My system resources were not the problem.  Today when I try to play the AVI in QT, the playback is choppy with second increments being skipped. Again this is happening when less than 8% of my system resources are being used.  I have never before not been able to play the AVI smoothly.  All of my drivers are updated.
My OS is Windows 8.1.  CPU is i7 3820, 64G of RAM, Nvidia GTX560, SSD drives for programs, assets and source files etc all distributed onto different hard drives.  I am working with AE CS6 (cloud version) and it is up to date.
I have been researching the internet and see people speaking about uninstalling codec packs and re-installing to fix choppy playback.  I'm not sure whether this is something I should do.  Apart from that I am at a loss as to what might have suddenly caused this.  Any suggestions for where else to look would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Mandy

Hi Rick, from AE it was the default "Best Settings" 1280 x 720, Audio on AVI and in AME the YouTube preset.  I doubt the render settings have anything to do with it - reason being, AVI movies that were rendered previous to this issue and have been watched many times without issue, are now choppy when watched.
As for what has changed, well I asked myself the same.  I changed my keyboard and mouse to wireless.  Also I deleted all my fonts and from another computer with the same OS, I re-installed the default set.
It may not have anything to do with the Adobe suite and more to do with my OS but I thought I'd ask both here and over at Microsoft and see what suggestions might be offered.  I guess worst case I will look to do a clean install but I want to exhaust easier avenues first.

  • Audio Codec Issue

There are a few .avi files in my collection and timeline that have been working normally but have suddenly gone offline; when I try to re-link them, it says "the selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)." I tried importing them again, but only the video appears, separate from audio (with the little film graphic without the megaphone graphic next to it). I looked up possible solutions to the problem; people said to use the program "GSpot" to analyze the codec of the file, and GSpot listed a bunch of files Premiere was supposedly missing. I looked in the Premiere CS3 folder, and the files that GSpot said were missing were still in the folder. Anyone know how I can reverse this issue? My .avi files were working fine before, so I'm hoping they can work again. Thanks!
    -S

The codec for video is MP42, S-Mpeg 4 version 2; the codec for audio is 0x0055 MPEG-1 Layer 3, 44100Hz  96 kb/s tot , Joint Stereo. GSpot says that both of these codecs are installed.
MPEG Audio can be troublesome, at best. The sampling rate will be converted to 48KHz at some point, and that is what I referred to with reference to the .CFA files. These are the conformed Audio files, from the conversion to 48KHz. It seems that they have been lost.
What do you mean by "replacing my Assets"?
In this case, your attempt to re-Link is not working, so you are Importing the "replacement" files for those Assets.
All of my files are viewable on Windows Media Player, just to add; the problem seems to be with Adobe and the system, not with the system and the files themselves.
Playing a file is vastly different, than editing them. There are many major differences between the two operations. Also, working with CODEC's is totally different in a player, than in an editor. Additionally, some players, like VLC have their own CODEC's.
And yes, these files are on an external hard drive.
Stop what you are doing. Do not touch a thing. Step back from the computer and DO NOT do a Save of your Project, yet. Save_As, or Save_As_a_Copy is OK. Just do NOT Save your Project.
The reason for this is that I want you to do something else first, and if you have your original Project file, as it was, you might save yourself some extra work.
With externals, a different drive letter is often assigned, depending on what else might be plugged in, and a given time. Your Project file is only an XML database of all of the links to all Assets and what you have done with them. When you Imported your MPEG files, one of the first things that happened was that the Audio was 'Conformed" to 48KHz and the .PEK (the Waveform Display) files were also created. Normally, if these are lost, PrPro will just do them over again. In your case, something could be getting in the way of that normal process.
If I caught you in time, before you did a Save over your old Project file, I want you to do a Save_As_a_Copy, and locate this new file on an internal drive, as a backup. Now, Open your [Project Name].PRPROJ file in WordPad. You'll have to do an extension change to "All Files," as it'll want look for its format, and not the PRPROJ extension. Now, search for one of your known Asset's name. Look in the line that the program finds. Note the drive letter name. Close out of WordPad.
Now, go into your OS's Disk Management module and change the drive letter to that which PrPro last saw the drive as. When using external HDD's, always go into the OS and make this setting permanent, so that each time that you plug it in, PrPro will see the same drive letter. If you swap the drive between computers you will need to do this in the OS on each computer.
I hope that PrPro will be able to find everything perfectly, when you have the possible drive letter issue corrected. Also, where do you have your Scratch Disks set to. Default is "Same As Project," and your case would put them on the external also.
Let me know how it goes and good luck,
    Hunt

Select the file in the Finder, then do "Get Info" and look at the "More Info" part of the pane. It has a section for codecs and should tell you. Otherwise, open it with the QuickTime Player app and use "Show Movie Inspector" from the Windows menu to get the codec info.
