DV NTSC 48 kHz 23.98 - anamorphic?

With reference to my previous question regarding PAL TO NTSC standards conversions, if you look at the last paragraph in this article the writer refers to a sequence set to DV NTSC 48 kHz 23.98.
However, I need to do this to an anamorphic film clip - but sadly FCP does not have a setting for DV NTSC 48 kHz 23.98 anamorphic.
Can anybody help?

In the A/V settings preference dialog, you can create custom capture and sequence settings and even make a custom easy setup with those defaults.

  • Exporting from a DV NTSC 48 KHZ Anamorphic sequence

I have shot an entire project using the Sony PD170 Camera in 16:9 anamorphic. When I create a sequence for this, all is good. However, when I export the footage, it doesn't seem to keep the anamorphic and squishes it back to 4:3. I can't figure out how to keep the 16:9 setting. Can anyone help me here?? Would love to figure this one out...

If this is only intended for viewing on a computer, do the following:
Open the file in QuickTime Player. Press command and J to open the Properties window.
Click on the Presentation tab. Now click on the *Conform Aperture* button. The setting will jump to Clean and display the video in 16:9. Save it.
If you intend to make DVDs, leave the file as it is. Set the Anamorphic flag in DVD Studio Pro from the Inspector at bottom right of the Interface.

this was my default sequence preset in FCP 6... worked fine before the upgrade. Other higher quality presets (like apple pro res) work fine.

  • FCP sequence settings when shooting 24p, 2:3:3:2 at 16x9?

I'm attempting to edit my first feature project on FCP after having shot footage on a canon xl2 at 24p, 2:3:3:2 and using the 16:9 frame size.
Can't find specifics about the proper FCP settings anywhere in the manual for editing footage shot this way. So I'm wondering-- since the captured footage shows up in the browser as 720x480, should the sequence setting be dialed in the same? Also should I be editing in the timeline with sequence settings at NTSC DV (3:2)and the anamorphic 16:9 box checked?
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
I've got my notions on all this but am a little nervous about going forward without some reassurance. Appreciate any help you can offer on these questions.

You're best off creating a new, custom Easy Setup to meet your needs...
Press Option-Command-Q to launch the Audio/Video Settings dialog
Select the Sequence Presets tab, then...
    Click DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 and press Duplicate
In the Sequence Preset Editor, check the Anamorphic 16:9 box
Rename this Sequence Preset to DV-NTSC 48 kHz - 23.98 Anamorphic and click OK
Back in the Sequence Settings tab, place a checkmark next to your newly created sequence preset to select it as your current preset
Select the Capture Presets tab, and repeat the previous sub-steps for DV-NTSC 48 kHz Advanced Pulldown Removal
(that is, duplicate, adjust for Anamorphic, rename, then select as your preset)
Select the Summary tab and confirm that you've got the correct presets for all selections - outside of what you've adjusted already, Device Control as well as Video Playback should be set to FireWire NTSC - then click the Create Easy Setup button
Enter a name and description, then click OK
After you've saved your preset, click OK to exit Audio/Video Settings
You've now got your system up and running correctly so that you can digitize and edit.
If, for any reason, you screw up your settings, you've now got an Easy Setup that you can simply access at anytime, simple press Control-Q and select it from the options. Or if you're a menubar person, that's Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup.
Oh... and one more thing-- how much memory would you guys recommend be allocated to the fcp application (i'm guessing less than 100%)and how much to the thumbnails?
Personally, I leave mine at 100% - never had a problem with it. However, many here advise dialing it down to 70% or so (if I can remember correctly - hopefully someone else will chime in if I'm wrong).
The default thumbnail value is fine as well, in my experience.

  • Exported anamorphic QT movie does not retain 16:9 image (it is squeezed)

i have a 26 minute short anamorphic film sequence that i want to preserve as a self-contained quicktime movie. and also to use it to burn copies of the film in i-dvd. i go to export as a QT Movie under "file" and then choose the setting DV-NTSC 48 Khz Anamorphic. The final product, however, when opened in QT player or i-dvd is NOT the anamorphic image i see in FCP but something rather squeezed, and with the dimensions 720x480. what have i done wrong?
    thank you....

What you're seeing IS the anamorphic frame, what you see in fcp is the corrected frame. If you want to burn to dvd use anamorphicizer ( http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Video/Anamorphicizer.shtml ) on the file before importing to idvd or use dvdsp, which works with anamorphic material properly.
Anamorphic material is stored in a different aspect ratio to the display aspect in order to cut down on the number of pixels needed, in the case of sd anamorphic it's as a result of sd being natively 4:3 and 16:9 support having to be added to an existing system. So the image is stored in the wrong shape in order to use all the pixels that exist in the sd world, and then corrected on display.
If you want to create a file for web/computer use only, then you either need to use the qt conform aperture setting or export using qt conversion and using a frame size with a 16:9 ratio such as 640x360.

  • Help with anamorphic media

I'm trying to capture 16:9 media I recorded with my Panasonic PV-GS320 Mini DV camera. I was told to use DV NTSC Anamorphic, which looks fine in the preview but when I capture it it's stretched into 4:3 and looks really bad. I know that anamorphic will stretch media to the size of the screen but when I export it and play it on my widescreen MacBook Pro it still comes out as 4:3 (note: I didn't spend any time editing I just exported a small segment of Raw for a test).
How in the world do I keep it in 16:9??? I can do it well in iMovie, should I use that to capture?? please someone help me!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Chuck Smith

Ok first hanumang is absolutly right no doubt, If I know what he is telling to you I will not burn like 20 dvd trying to do what you want. So let me say that I have the same camcorder that you have so here are the steps to export in anamorphic.
    1. In FCP/Audio&Video Settings/Capture preset/DV NTSC 48 kHZ Anamorphic
    2. Sequence/Right click/check anamorphic
    3. File/Export Quick Time Movie/Current Settings
Thats it if you want to view the resultinf file like originlas clips that you capture (anamorphic) do what hanumang says and select clean. Then if you select movie info you will see that the file size will be 853 x 480 then file save and that's it
Then if you want to burn it on idvd just select the project aspect ratio to 16:9 good luck... ooohhhh if you want to burn a dvd to view it on a regular tv 4:3 that's another thing just let me know.

  • Anamorphic setting not working on Capture Preset

I duplicated the DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced 2:3:3:2 Pulldown to create a specific Capture Preset for doing the same but adding Anamorphic. The capture seems to go okay and I have the footage, but not in Anamorphic format. I can check the Anamorphic setting for each clip, but can't figure out why FCP isn't applying it in the first place. Anyone know how to fix this?

  • Exporting anamorphic video

    Hi everyone,
I looked around Discussions for a problem like mine, and I found things similar, but not exact. I am in the process of making my first ever video in the 16:9 format. I have a pretty simple consumer camcorder (Sony Handycam DCR-HC42) which has the option of recording in Anamorphic 16:9, but I never do. Well, for this project, I decided to give it a try. My problem is, that when this video is completed, I will be giving copies to many people... some who have 16:9 tvs and some who have standard 4:3 tvs. When I export the video out of Final Cut Pro, if I go under the "Setting:" menu, and choose DV NTSC 48 kHz Anamorphic, the video looks great on my plasma 16:9 TV (well as great as anamorphic can get anyway, lol) but when I watch it on a 4:3 TV, then the picture is squeezed to fill the entire screen. (Yes, my DVD players are set for the type of TVs that they are being used with.) I would like the black bars on the top and bottom while being viewed on a 4:3 and I'd like it to fill the screen when being viewed on a 16:9.
Shouldn't it automatically put the black bars on the top and bottom if I export with DV NTSC 48kHz Anamorphic? ...Or should I go into custom and change the pixel size myself? If so, what is the correct 16:9 pixel size?
By the way, I'm using iDVD 6 to burn.
    Thanks so much.

In iDVD are you creating a 4:3 or 16:9 project? (It could be that you created a 4:3 DVD, and your wide screen plasma TV is coincidentally forcing it to be wide, and so it looks OK.) You will have to choose either a 4:3 or a 16:9 format when you author the DVD -- and then know that the various TV sets will behave in a variety of ways depending on their capabilities. Old standard TVs will chop off the sides of a 16:9 picture. New 16:9 sets can pillarbox a 4:3 picture. An option may be to create a 4:3 DVD that has 16:9 movies letterboxed. In an old standard TV you will get a letterboxed picture. In many of the new sets and players capable of 16:9 you will be able to adjust settings to fill the entire screen. Anyhow this has been my experience with DVDs and aspect ratio madness.

  • Widescreen footage look stretched in anamorphic

Received 'widescreen' footage, shot with the Panasonic HVX 200. FCP is (as usual) set to NTSC 48 KHz Anamorphic. However, the footage is stretched and shows the letterbox, both on my TV and in FCP. What went wrong? Do I now need to distort the clips? If yes, what are the attributes for this?
    Thanks, much!
    Alex

    SD, 720x480, letter boxed
That's not widescreen, black bars (letterbox) is printed in your video.
You can use a Anamorphic sequence and scale up your movie to fit the screen, but be aware of the quality loss of upscaling.

  • How can I get a better looking NTSC video showing on an Apple TV?

Filming on Mini DV tapes using a JVC GY-DV500 camcorder. Capturing via Firewire 400.
What I've been doing is capturing and editing with the DV NTSC 48 khz presets. I export "using QuickTime conversion" for Apple TV. The problem I have is that the video looks extremely pixelated when viewing it on the screen or computer. It looks like square pixels instead of non-square.
I realize that I'm blowing up a 720x480 signal onto an HD screen hooked to an HD source, but it's still a very low-quality look for that. I've tried setting the Apple TV to 480p or exporting at different qualities using different codecs.
If I try to capture with a different preset (ie. DV50 NTSC) I get the error that it had trouble reading from the source tape. (Is that because it's going through a daisy chain? The camcorder has FW400 but the Mac Pro only has a bunch of FW800.)
My thought process is that an SD television channel looks much better than this so my SD material should be equal quality. Where am I losing it? Capture? Editing? Export?

I don't know what AppleTV can handle as far as bit rate is concerned, but increase the bit rate as high as it will let you. You are taking DV which is 25Mb/s and compressing it. If you're making an H.264, you should get great results needing no more than 6Mb/s. Bear in mind, the higher the bit rate, the larger the file size.

  • Using  Adobe Premiere CS3 (ver. 3.2) with Microsoft AVI DV files (4:3, 48Khz) on timeline now ask render (red line) and before didnt.Proyect is DV NTSC standard 48Khz. What it could be?

    Hi,
Normally during months the edition was done with Microsoft AVI DV Files (4:3 NTSC 48 Khz). No effects (just cuts). Proyect settings as DV-NTSC Standard 48 KHz
Since today when the work is done in a new or old proyect (DV-NTSC Standard 48 KHz) and  if the same file (Microsoft AVI DV) is loaded to timeline now is showing a red line over the video on timeline (so requires render). There no effects. This never happens before. it is very weird.
The Premiere is CS3 ver 3.2.0.
This is  happening to 2 computers with the same version. So far I know there is no changes on the systems
I was thinking to reisntall 3.0 and then test and the update to 3.2...
    Any idea?

    Hi,
It worked once in one of the computers. (AVi DV didnt show render red over line). BUt afterwards the problem got back. The only solution so far was to reinstall premiere, update to 3.2.0 in both pc.
It worked for a while then problems was again. Reinstalled for second time, so far 2 days still ok.. It is very weird. I unchecked updates from cs3 and windowsfor just in case has any relation.
    Thanks for your tip anyway.

  • Anamorphic- FCP5- DVD?

I'm doing a project in 16:9 for the first time. I shot in 16:9 SD on my Canon XH-A1. I've read up on the concept of anamorphic, but I'm a little confused on the best thing to do in this situation. I need to edit the 16:9 footage and then output to a DVD either through iDVD or DVD Studio Pro. I would like for people with widescreen TV's to be able to watch it that way, with no letterboxing. But then people without widescreen would see it letterboxed.
As a test I created a custom sequence setting that is 853 x 480, and exported the video in that size. Then I put that into DVD Studio Pro and burned it to disc. I did get 16:9 letterboxed video when played on a regular 4:3 screen. I haven't been able to test it yet on a widescreen set. I'm not sure what to expect.
    1. Will this work?
    2. Does it have to be this hard? If I used a 720 x 480 Anamorphic sequence preset, and output it in those dimensions, wouldn't my final product be letterboxed on both widescreen and 4:3 sets? Or if not wouldn't it be scaled up and lose quality? I'm confused on how this setting would work.
    thanks.

    1. No - video that is natively 853x480 will have to resized by DVDSP. Video for DVD (in NTSC land) should be 720x480 (anamorphic or not).
    2. No, it doesn't have to be hard at all. Use the NTSC DV 48Khz Anamorphic Easy Setup and everything should be, umm, set up for you while editing. Provided your settings in DVDSP are correct - your tracks and menus are set to 16:9 Letterbox - your final product will not be letterboxed on 16:9 displays.
Since it confuses a lot of folks, let me clarify: the 16:9 options in DVDSP only affect how anamorphic 16:9 video is displayed on 4:3 sets. Anamorphic 16:9 video is always 'full screen' on 16:9 displays (unless the player's TV Shape setting is incorrectly set).

  • Final cut won't preview video from an NTSC tape

Hey all, Im having a major issue with final cut pro and how it handles NTSC footage. When trying to log in my video clips from my dv deck i get audio through but no video. Very strange, having following the set up from the easy setup menu. Is there a fault with Final Cut and NTSC?
Can any one spread some light on this?
    thanks in advance

Just now played around with some of the settings within Audio/Video settings, changed the video playback option to digital cinema desktop preview - Main and it fixed the problem. I was now getting NTSC video as well as audio, however the log bin was grayed out and when I tried to capture the video Final cut wouldn't allow me cause I had no Log Bin selected. The is starting to get well annoying.
Not sure what to try now. Bellow is my current A/V settings within Final Cut Pro
Sequence Preset: DV NTSC 48 KHz
Capture Presets: DV NTSC 48 KHz
    Device Control Preset: FireWire NTSC
Video Playback: Digital Cinema Desktop Preview - Main
    Audio Playback: Default
    Is that not correct?

  • NTSC- CCIR 601 vs. Square Pixels

    Hi,
I've digitized hours of 24p advanced footage shot with my DVX-100, and noticed between tapes that the aspect ratio goes from square to letterboxed. My editor notified me that the "Pixel Aspect" in some shots are "NTSC- CCIR 601" and other shots are "Square".
We are currently using Offline RT for the edit- I first captured with "DV NTSC 48 kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal" then downconverted to Offline RT with Media Manager as I could not capture Advanced Pulldown removal 24p Offline RT footage directly.
I would appreciate any advice to prevent this anomaly when we go to the online full rez DV version. I believe it is a FCP digitizing issue or Offline RT issue and not due to a camera problem.
    Any info much appreciated.

    Powerbook G4
    FCP HD 4.5
    Offline RT (23.98 preset)
    DVX-100- 24p Advanced Mode (F6)

Did you ever find an answer on this one? I have the same issue and was curious to find out why some download as Square Pixels and others not.
In anycase you can fix it, go to item properties for the clip, don't have the screen in front of me right now but the first tab (think it is there), right click over the Square Pixel Aspect setting and it should give you a drop down of other choices. Then the clip will display correctly. I found that quite by accident. It works for a number of the other options in the Item properties window.

  • Exporting to NTSC

So we have PAL video that we've converted to NTSC using the nattress plugin. The quality after the conversion is really good but as soon as I export it to DV-NTSC 48 KHz things are not so nice. What would you guys suggest I export to since DV-NTSC doesn't have that great of quality. The footage is for a documentary and will eventually be submitting into festivals.

What would you guys suggest I export to<<</div>
What is your final viewing medium? DVD-Video? If so, export to MPEG-2 / AC3 and import those two files into DVD-SP for authoring.
