DV-NTSC File Compatability

AVI files captured from my Sony DV cameras with OnLocation cannot be opened by mplayer, virtualdub, mediacoder, stoik and many other programs. The selected recording AVI type (T1,T2 or quicktime) doesn't matter. For a T2 type, GSpot reports the codec name as DVC/DV Video and confirms that the codec is installed. It is also able to render the video using MS rendering. It does fail to render using GSpot codec solutions on the DivxDemux process. I have no idea what this really means or if this is related to the compatability issue with the programs mentioned. I'm trying to find a software solution to batch compress these AVI files, preferably keeping them as AVI, but with reduced resolution. Note that if I capture from the same setup to an AVI using Windows Movie Maker, everything is compatable.
So what is OnLocation doing differently and why?
How can I get my OnLocation files to be compatable?
Any suggestions to batch compression software other than what I've tried?

OnLocation records standard AVI and Quicktime files. We test compatibility extensively in other Adobe apps, and we spot test all formats in other NLEs as well as WMP and QuickTime. We don't specifically test in GSpot or Vdub, but we do on occasion use those tools, and have never had a problem with them playing clips out of OnLocation. I'm unfamiliar with the other apps you cite.

  • HD AVI FILE Compatibility

    HD AVI FILE Compatibility
I am working with a company to have our family home movies (8mm & super 8mm) from the 50’s-70’s and 35mm color slides restored and transferred onto a digital format
(DVD archive and digital HD-AVI files saved on an external Western Digital 1T hard drive with ESATA, USB 2, and Fire Wire 800 ports)
We would like to have the ability to work with/edit the HD-AVI files to eliminate unwanted footage and be able to make our own HD DVD movies or post onto an online library for family members to download or view.
This will be a very expensive restoration project and we are considering an IMac or
Mac Pro purchase to do the editing of the HD-AVI files and to copy & burn copies from the DVD archive set.
Is the HD-AVI format our best choice…????

I agree and go for the Mac Pro if you're looking to do serious video work. You may be able to get away with the consumer video processing products like iMove, iDVD, Toast as the jump to Final Cut Pro is quite steep.
It's not clear from your post whether you are a current Mac user as you describe yourself as a rookie. The Mac is definitely the way to go for such video work but I wouldn't jump in blind. You are looking to splash some serious money here and its not quite as easy as Mac Pro vs iMac, Final Cut vs iMovie. You need to consider memory and disk configuration and backup strategy etc.
I would definitely recommend a visit to an Apple store or maybe even preferably an authorise Apple dealer where you can sit down for as much time as you need to discuss what you need in hard/software and also for training if needed.
Making things available via the web is also one of your possible requirements so you also need to think of such things as web hosting/MobileMe etc
Sounds an exciting project. I'm currently going through the process of migrating all of our digital video over to my Mac Pro which is obviously not as daunting as moving from film. I'm using iMovie HD which is managing to suit my needs at the moment but I can see a time when I will want to make the jump to Final Cut.
    Best of luck

  • Are ntfs files compatable with mac os lion

are ntfs files compatable with mac os lion

Files aren't ntfs or hfs or ufs or zfs.
Those are file systems that is the basis for how the OS stores the files on the computer. Files are store inside a file system, but the file system doesn't normally affect the file itself.
Mac OS X can natively read nt file systems. If you want to write, then you'll need something like Siddharth Khanna pointed out. I've also used Tuxera's product. You can use a combination of MacFuse and NTFS-3G for free, but if you need normal everyday access, that's going to fall short, I think.
On the other hand, Windows can't natively handle HFS+ at all. If you need to format an external drive to work with both, I'd suggest using exFAT. Mac OS X from 10.6.6 on can read and write it, and Windows back to some version of XP can read/write it. As the name implies, it is much like FAT, but on steroids. It can handle very large file sizes and disk sizes.

  • Issue (aka bug):  File compatibility and alpha channels

When I enable file compatibility mode on photoshop (so that previews and thumbnails show up), the thumbnail and preview will be wrong when there's an alpha channel in the channel palette. Specifically, the thumbnail will be masked by the top-most alpha channel in the channel palette. Consequently, there is sort of a work-around--if you create a plain white alpha channel and make sure it's the top-most alpha channel in the palette, then the preview and thumbnail come out fine. Luckily, this requires negligible extra memory.
If there's no alpha channel or I don't save alpha channels, the preview/thumbnail looks fine.
In spite of the work-around, a fix would be nice. It'd also be nice if there was a way to have a preview/thumbnails in Finder without the large memory penalty of compatibility mode.

Yes, everything in Bridge works great. However, the search function in Bridge is SLOW and a bit flaky (same problem on the Windows side as well) so I like to use spotlight instead for searching. Additionally, I like to use iPhoto to create collections of images that will contain photoshop files as well as others.
For now, it is workable for me to just use compatibility mode in photoshop and make sure all images with alpha channels have an all-white alpha channel at the top of the stack. The file size penalty is tolerable for now. If Apple ever fixes things on their end, then it's a simple script to convert my psd files back again.

  • File compatibility between cs3 and cs5

    Hi,
What are the compatilibity issues between Photoshop CS3 and CS5?  Can they be used together without much (if any) issues?
    Thanks.

They can happily coexist on the same system, as long as you've got the disk space.  Photoshop has always been like that.
You'll only be able to run one at a time, at any given instant, though.
Regarding file compatibility, I don't how much it's required to open a file in Photoshop CS3, but the newer version does offer a "Maximize Compatibility" preference setting for saving .psd files.  On occasion I've opened .psd files in Photoshop CS3 saved by CS5 (using the aforementioned setting) and I haven't seen any issues at all.

  • File compatibility setting in Pref. / composite thumbnail

I would like photoshop to show a file image for the thumbnail (instead the generic lines of type). I know in the pref box I can set the "Maximize File compatibility" to "Always" or Ask, and this will save a flattened version of the file as part of the document. But this greatly increased the file size. I did some checking on 10 layered files ranging from 14Mb to 45Mb. The new file size increased a whopping 35% to 88%. That's a heavy price to pay  both on my system here, our back up / archive, CD / DVD burning, and our client systems.
I'm in the process of putting together a browser based image library. To render a image thumbnail it shows the generic lines of type if layered (useless), and a image thumbnail only if "File compatibility" is set to Yes. ( Which greatly increases file size, and cost of storage space).
Is there a way to get a image thumbnail without having to set Maximize File Compatibility to Yes?
It would seem to me that photoshop should be able to create a small, low res flattened version, at a low quality setting, that would be on the kb in size for a thumbnail. And imbed that into the file, vs the bloated composite. I understand the reason for the composite for file compatibailty with previous versions etc. Just not for creating the thumbnail.
I'm hoping some else has more info that I don't.
    thanks all...
    JeffN

    Jeff,
The wording in Preferences > File Handling may have misled you. It says "Image Previews" in connection with creating a file icon despite a file's icon having nothing to do with Finder's preview.
With OS X Photoshop, as long as the preference to create icon is enabled, an icon is generated from the visible composite of the document and is attached to the PSD file (not actually embedded in the file) regardless of the Maximum Compatibility setting. Finder will display the icon.
However, Max Compat has to be enabled for a composite to be stored in the PSD, and it is that composite which Finder reads to generate its preview.
At least that's the case for 8-bit per channel PSD.

  • File compatibility between CS 5.5 MAC and CS 5.5 PC?

We are currently a PC based shop with a few MAC's tossed here and there.  I have been asked to verify the file compatibility between CS 5.5 MAC and CS 5.5 PC.  Are the files fully compatible?  i.e. can user A on a PC create an illustrator/photoshop/etc document which is then opened by user B on a MAC with no issues?
    Thanks!

Yes. For the programs you mentioned it has been forever this way and even for programs like Premiere Pro or Encore, that were platform-specific until recently, this is no longer an issue ever since CS5. Of course you will still have to take care of different handling for file paths on different platforms for externally linked files, but that's a different matter and nothing specific to Adobe...

My fuji x100s has RAW file compatibility issue with OS 10.8.2, my iphoto11 cannot recognise the file format.  Anyone know of this issue too? Appreciate if anyone can offer some helps.  Thanks

Correct.  The Fuji X-100s is not currently supported by iPhoto or Aperture (or the RAW converter in OS X itself).  You can submit feedback via iPhoto and request this.

  • File Compatibility, Files Created w/Photoshop on Apple Will Not Open on Windows platform

I have created a book in InDesign CS5.5 that contains Photoshop documents created in Photoshop CS5.1 using a Windows 7 professional 64bit computer. These files were subsiquently modified by a Graphic Artist using the same versions of this software running on an Apple computer. When his files were packaged by Indesign and then returned to me, the linked .tiff files that he had modified in Photoshop would not open again on my computer. Note that other liinked photographs that had not been subsequently modified opened correctly and that the InDesign document included in the package would link and open correctly when the InDesign document opened. Is this a problem with cross platform compatibility?

The platform that created or reads the file doesn't matter -- the files are the same.
No, that is not a platform compatibility issue - because there are no such issues.
Are the files failing to open in Photoshop, or InDesign?
What does the error say when they fail to open?

  • PDF file compatibility

What will be compatibility for reading a old version of PDF files (say Ver. 4, 5, 6) with latest version of Adobe Reader or writer (Say ver. 9, 10, etc.).

PDF files have a version number which is not the same as the software version.
    Example
    PDF 1.0 - relates to Acrobat 1.0
    PDF 1.5 - relates to Acrobat 6.0
PDF 1.7 - latest version (but there are later extensions with no number)
If a PDF was correctly made, all versions of Acrobat later than the introduction of the new features will work.
Later extensions include portfolios, and kinds of security.
There are many limitations on the tablet (e.g. iPad) versions of software.

  • When I render my project to a NTSC file for Computer play back, the audio is not rendered and the file has no sound. How do I fix it?

I build my project using videos and photos and I add sound at the end for a few photos. I then render the project to a NTSCDVD Standard file so I can play it on a Computer. Once the file is rendered and I play it, there is no sound at all. I am using Premiere Elements 13, recently installed on 12/29/2015. Previously, I had a trial copy and before I could uninstall it, it disappeared. I don't know if that had any thing to do with my full version.

    richardson
On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 13 running? For now I will assume Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit.
What are the properties of your source video and photos and what project preset did you (manually) or the project (automatically) set as the project preset
to match those source properties? In this regard, please tell us the readings that you see under Edit Menu/Project Settings/General
    Editing Mode
    Timebase
    Frame Size
    Pixel Aspect Ratio
even if the fields look grayed out.
What is your choice under Publish+Share/Computer/ which is using the NTSC DVD Standard preset? Are you using Publish+Share/Computer/MPEG with the NTSC DVD Standard preset? If so, are you using the default export settings or customizing them in anyway under the Advanced Button/Video Tab or Audio Tab? If you export your Timeline to Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime with a preset = NTSC DV, does your file have sound in the export with your player?
What are you using as the player for this export?
Let us start here and then decide what next?
    Thanks.

  • PS file compatibility with Color Factory

Hi I'm a photographer that uses Photoshop, I submit photos to the local paper who use the program Color Factory. I have been told that Photoshop is not compatable with Color Factory and photos come up with an error ? does this sound correct ? I can't what effect this would have on another program?
    Regards Danielle

    Hi Danielle -
I'm not familiar with Color Factory, but I assume it has issues with .psd files directly from Photoshop. Here's a little snippet from the Color Factory Reference Manual:
I don't know if that helps, but you can just do a quick find function of the manual to find more information.
And of course, as was mentioned by Charles, saving the image in other file formats should allow you to open the files with no issue.
    Cheers!
