DV-NTSC or DV-NTSC ANAMORPHIC?

I am about to rebuild a Final Cut Pro 7 project for 16:9.  I have resized all stills to 960x540 and the clips (29.97 fps) are ready for importing. I now have to make the choice of either DV-NTSC or DV-NTSC ANAMORPHIC.  I have tried a search of the internet but couldn't find out what the difference is and which one of them I should be choosing.  Can somebody please advise me?  Thank you.
Mitaka (Japan)

Many thanks for the advice.  It was much appreciated.  Now I have another problem.  After reading the PHOTOSHOP TITLES article I am not sure whether I have been wasting the last two days in rescaling my images to 960x540 instead of 720x480.  Or do you need the extra for panning and scanning?
Thanks again.

  • 24PA squeeze clip captured NTSC/DV in NTSC anamorphic timeline

I shot 24PA( squeeze)F6 for a project but opened it and rendered my greenscreen using reg NTSC not anamorphic which produced black bars and when I try to upscale to fit widescreen it looks horrible, but looks great in letterbox mode...how can I get it back to squeeze w/o affecting quality.and everytime I drop into Anamorphic timeline I have to render.

I found the answer in search.

  • Importing HD PAL assetinto an NTSC timeline

I have created an NTSC 720 x 480 timeline, which matches most of the footage I will be editing in FCP.
I have an HD PAL Asset which is 25fps 1024x576.
I am concerned about my workflow in creating a file that I can import into my timeline, and would appreciate feedback.
Currently I take my PAL file, conform it to 23.98fps in Cinema Tools, then use Advance Format Conversions in Compressor with the following settings:
    Uncompressed 10bit NTSC video
Frame Controls: Custom / Resizing Filter: Best Deinterlace: Better
    Encoder - Video Settings 29.97
    Geometry - PAR: NTSC CCIR 601/DV Anamorphic (16:9) 720 x 405
this results in a file that is 720 x 405 which hopefully I can letterbox in my timeline.
Everything seems wonderful EXCEPT when i look at the file info in my browser it says that I have Square PAR for my converted PAL footage, and Rectangular 601/NTSC PAR for all my other assets.
Will this result in distorted segments of my final sequence when I export?
How can I correct this? Help appreciated thank you.

While I have you though...what is the difference between the two HD export options when exporting with quicktime converter?  One option has a 16x9 next to it, one doesn't.  I'm assuming since my footage was captured natively 16x9 that I do not need to choose the HD with 16x9 option?  Or should I choose this if I plan on posting to the web, so that it is embedded as and knows to play as a 16x9 HD video online?  Sorry if that is horribly worded and difficult to understand. Thanks.

  • DV-NTSC Export

I have multiple clips of video in different formats and aspect ratios... How do I export all of these to DV-NTSC in compressor? I can't seem to find the settings to do this.
    I am using compressor 3.0.5
    Thanks in advance.

    Here is where you can find the settings in Compressor;
Apple > Other Workflows > Advanced Format Conversions
There is a selection for both DV-NTSC and DV-NTSC Anamorphic.
Works great and getting the file format I need.

  • Square pixels in an NTSC DV timeline

I have supplemental footage that is both H.264 and prores (square pixels) that I need to add to an NTSC 601 DV (720x480 anamorphic)  timeline . I can resize/distort the images manually but I'm worried about quality loss on the export, what should I convert them to? Or rather shoudl I convert my DV footage to accomodate them?

A few things need to happen here:
    a. Your 4x3 picture (the H264 clip) needs to conform to 16x9 picture.
    b. Your 16x9 picture needs to conform to anamorphic DV NTSC.
Also, is there any chance that the H264 clip was exported from a source clip with better compression (you're taking a hit just for using H264 instead of Apple ProRes 422, Animation or Photo-JPEG at best).  If so, use that instead.
It might be easiest to create a custom 16x9 Sequence with Square pixels at 640x360 with ProRes compression.  Add your 640x480 and nudge it up or down if needed.  Also, apply the Deinterlace filter if needed.  (If it's 480i30, do this. If it's 480p30, skip it).
Add the custom 640x360 Sequence to your DV NTSC Sequence, adjusting the Scale and the Distort values as needed to get the picture to fit tha 720x480 anamorphic frame size.  You'll have to open the nested Sequence as a clip in the Viewer to make these adjustments (control click the nested Sequence for this option) under the Motion tab.

  • Problems viewin external ntsc monitor

I can only view the external monitor when I use the print to video function. When I'm editing there is no video showing on the external monitor. The video out is set to Apple Fire wire NTSC. I am using the ADVC-100 as the conduit to the monitor. I have tried both DV-NTSC and DV-NTSC- Firewire Basic in Easy Setup.

    Thank you

Make sure you have the setting correct on the box. It should be recognized any time it is connected. Trash your preferences and set it up correctly. Use the DV Converter setting, none other.

  • Burning PAL dvd from NTSC FCP 6 project?

I need to burn a European market PAL dvd sample from a NTSC project. I've done this before for a European film festival, but it was a very hit or miss process.. Basically, back then, I mixed the project down as both PAL and NTSC files, then burned every combination of NTSC and PAL format DVDs (PAL file/PAL dvd format, NTSC file/PAL dvd format, PAL file NTSC format, and NTSC file/NTSC format).. I expected the PAL/PAL to work, but it didn't. In fact, I seem to remember that one of the combos that I least expected to work actually did.. maybe the NTSC/PAL disk (can't remember for sure)
Will someone please advise me as to the correct way to burn the NTSC project, such that it will be playable an European PAL format machines?

If you need a true PAL dvd, you need to convert your ntsc quicktime to a PAL quicktime using either compressor or something like graeme Natrresses standard conversion plug in. You will also need to recreate your dvd menus and reauthor the dvd.

  • Why does ntsc QT file in ntsc QT sequence need to be rendered?

I have a feature in 5 reels. All reels have been converted from PAL to NTSC via Atlantis and imported into FCP. I'm on deadline to deliver a print and thought that since all clips in the timeline are NTSC and the Sequence is NTSC it should not need to be rendered. Unfortunately, they do need rendering and I don't think I will make it. Why is it asking to render? Can someone please help? Here are the settings and info below. Thanks in advance for any help.
Each reel is now an ntsc QT clip.

did you change the settings in the: Sequence>Settings menu or in the: Final Cut Pro Menu?
If in the Final Cut Pro menu it will take effect the next time you create a sequence and will not change the current settings.
    good luck.

  • Fcp export in ntsc format and burn into IDVD

i need help, when i export my fcp , i have set the settings for ntsc but in IDVD, when payed, it keeps jumping. although i did another one in pal, and things are ok, what setting do i have to put and also mpeg will work also or not. is pal regular in all the dvd players or ntsc?

First, what is your sequence ntsc or pal? ntsc is the standard for north america. and pal is the rest of the world (for the most part). most pal players will play ntsc disks without a problem. and computers will play either pal or ntsc.
You need to describe your workflow from shooting, thru capture, and editing. If you start with ntsc, stay with ntsc. If you start with pal, stay with pal. If you have pal material and need to create an ntsc dvd or vice-versa you need to do a standards conversion to your finished sequence.

  • How to change iMovie Project from iSight to DV-NTSC?

I noticed my iMovie project says it's an iSight project, meaning everything will be converted to motion-JPEG's on export in full quality. But my project has both DV and MJPEG clips and I prefer to export my DV clips untouched, not converted to MJPEG. If the project was in DV-NTSC mode, DV clips would be exported untouched. (The MJPEG would be converted to DV but I don't care about that.)
How do I change the project type from iSight to DV-NTSC?

Yes, there is always that option. However, I want to make sure that when I export a DV clip to a DV file, it will be exported untouched. If iMovie is in MJPEG mode, I'm afraid it might convert the DV clip to MJPEG and then back to DV.
It doesn't matter now since I've figured out how to switch between iSight and DV-NTSC modes. You can't do it in the application, but you can if you edit the iMovie project file itself. Towards the end of this file look for either ISIGHT or DV-NTSC. If it's not the one you want, replace it with ISIGHT, if DV-NTSC, or DV-NTSC, if ISIGHT.
Why is it important which project type you have? I've learned that video effects like transitions and fades are done in the default format iMovie has selected for your project. So if iMovie labeled your project as iSight (MJPEG), then all of your subsequent video effects will be rendered in MJPEG. If iMovie labeled your project as DV-NTSC, video effects are rendered in DV. This is important to know because effects rendered in a clip's original format are rendered much faster and may look better than if they weren't. So if you have a DV clip you wish to apply an effect to and the project is recognized as MJPEG, rendering the effect will likely be slow and the results may look bad.
This is just another annoying quirk that I've discovered during the course of editing a project. Seems like once I've figured out all the quirks of a particular version, another comes out with a new set of quirks.

  • Image Blurry in DV NTSC sequence.

    Hello,
I'm editing a sequence in 720 x 480 DV NTSC, pixel aspect NTSC - CCIR 601.  I need to add a logo image (tiff) into the sequence, but it always exports blurry (and it doesn't look that great in the canvas before exporting either).  I'm assuming it has to do with the par of the image vs. the sequence, but I've read several blogs and tried resizing the image and distorting and whatnot, and haven't had any luck.
This video is ultimately inteded for use on a website.
    (I've attached a screen shot)
Can anybody walk me through it?
Thanks, in advance to all you geniusi.

  • Why are my slugs NTSC ???

    Hi,
Working on a PAL project, PAL timeline, PAL presets, PAL everything.
But if I make a slug from the viewer, it shows up as using NTSC DV Compressor, NTSC 720x480 Frame Size, and Lower (Even) Dominance. The frame rate of the slug however is at 25fps.
    Any suggestions?
(I always knew slugs were a bit strange....)
    thank you....

I just tried this out and you are correct in your observation. However, I have a couple additional observations -
Though the slug placed into the PAL sequence still says it is Compressor:DV-NTSC, and the frame size is listed as 720x480, it
-appears to still be native to the sequence settings according to the render status bar
    -fills the frame
    -does not require rendering
-shows a PAL frame size if I drag it from the timeline to the browser and appple-9 it from there.
it has been many versions of FCP since bars or slug have required rendering, and the single generator comes into a sequence as native regardless of the sequence settings. Also consider the way that the bars or slug generators fill the viewer window no matter what the frame size, and cannot be zoomed in and out in the viewer.
I believe the slug and bars have somehow been made scalable and universal to all sequence codecs, and that even though the frame size and compressor for the default slug might show up as NTSC even in a PAL project, they are still native to the PAL sequence, and you should not notice any problems or require additional rendering. It seems as if these generators allow FCP to repeat a single frame as video without rendering, which I believe has been the case since FCP 4.0. If it fills the frame, and you don't have to render it, shrug your shoulders, roll your eyes, and keep working.
    hope this helps -

  • PAL - NTSC which is the better way ?

    Hi
In need of a NTSC DVD disk to US I wonder which way that gives best result:
From original PAL miniDV -> FCP -> QT-PAL.mov -> JES Deinterlacer (conversion from PAL to NTSC) -> iDVD NTSC project
    or
PAL miniDV -> FCP -> QT-NTSC.mov -> iDVD NTSC project
Last suggestion will be quicker - but will it give a good result ?
    alt. suggestions ??

    Thank You
Yes it's to easy to go in old tracks - Compressor - Yes that's the way.

  • Pixel Aspect & Compressor for PAL going to NTSC

    hi.
I have PAL clips which be part of an NTSC iDVD project. do I need to export the QT movies in NTSC format? i.e.,
do I need to change the sequence compressor and pixel aspects to NTSC?
do I need to change the PAL clips within the NTSC timelines to NTSC compressor and pixel aspect?
or... (and I would really prefer not to have to do this because the same sequences are being exported to MP4 really well as they stand)
do I transcode my PAL DVD MPEG files into DV-NTSC format via MPEG Streamclip?
    cheers,
    Gregory

You need to get good standards conversion software like Graeme Nattress' Standards Converter. You won't get good results doing it in FCE.

  • Best settings for film based 25fps PAL to Progressive 23.98fps NTSC?

I'm trying to get the best possible results for transcoding film-based 25fps PAL to 23.98 progressive NTSC. However, I'd also like to add back in the 4% slowdown to make the NTSC file look as close to an NTSC derived film transfer as possible.
I've tried various settings, but when I attempt the slow down the audio goes out of synch. Can anybody help? Are there any reference guides for such things?

Well it must be 24 over 29.97 then because it is working with it.  I have been able to create timelines and export quicktime movies, etc.  The item properties (in FCE Browser) of the clips definitely say 23.98fps-- as I would expect because I know I had the camera set to 24p.  However, the frame rate of the sequences i've been editing on say 29.97.  This is without me having made any conscious effort to manipulate any settings for the sequences at the outset-- I didn't even know the sequences had settings for this when i started.  I just began dragging and dropping footage out of the browser and it must have automatically set the sequence to 29.97.  Who knows what I had the Easy Set up set to when i brought the footage over from my camera two years ago.  I knew even less then.  Are the settings on Easy Set up critical when bringing the footage onto your computer from your camera?  What processes are the Easy set up settings governing?
Even with all of that said, you would recommend burning the DVD as an NTSC?  An NTSC in a new PAL DVD player will look better than an NTSC burned as a PAL?  I suppose I could send them both versions and see which one looks better.
    Thanks for you help Tom.
    P.S.
On the true 24p issue, I did find this:
There are many posts out there about the Canon XH A1 not having "true 24p".
I think much of that misinformation out there maybe stemmed from (correct me if I'm wrong):
Canon Frame Mode on the standard DV cams was a "simulation: of the 24 frame look.
The Canon HDV 24p actually records each single frame progressively, but using an interlaced method.
