DV-PAL or H.264?

Hi folks, just starting to convert some .avi 18fps Super 8 footage into 25fps for editing using streamclip. Take a look at the old thread:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/12941633#12941633
Now because youtube likes H.264 shall I convert to that compression in streamclip instead of DV-PAL before importing it into FCE4?
Will the DV-PAL compression add interlaced fields? I don't want that as it's not for TV it's going on the internet.
Lastly should I go with 720x576 (unscaled) as opposed to 720x576 (DV-PAL)?
Thanks
Kevin

Hi Tom, thanks for that.
Then to get it to youtube after editing in FCE do you export it as a Qucktime Movie then use StreamClip to compress it at H.264.... then upload to youtube?
Thanks
Kevin

  • DV-PAL to H.264

    Hi all,
With QTpro, I'd like to export a DV-PAL .mov file to H.264 but the option is greyed out. I can only use the MPEG4 options.
Any idea? Are there limitations on the input format for the H264 encoder?
    Thanks

    Works here...
    Open movie in Qt.
    Menu--->File-->Export--->Export--->Movie to Quicktime Movie--->Options--->
Video--->Settings (Click)---> Compression Type--->H.264...make you setting for h.264--->Ok--->Sound--->make your settings for audio...--->Prepare for Internet Streaming...check the box and set to Fast Start...--->OK....your done...Save

  • Why is HDV to H.264 so slow?

I have a Sony HC1 and I'm trying to generate H.264 video of some wedding footage I shot for the groom, but its is taking absolutely forever to process. I have a 42 second clip that I'm just testing with and to do a 60min/H.264 and it is taking some four hours to process. That means my 15 min clip would take DAYS.
I don't have that slow of a machine (DP 2Ghz G5), so what in the world can I do to speed this up, is it just a bug in Compressor or is it just that slow?
    thanks,
    mike

QT Pro 7.0.3 is much quicker, about 20mins for a 3min sequence encode from DV PAL --> 320x240 H.264. I had some simple titles which looked fine.
I have Compressor v1.2.1, so maybe I don't even have a choice since I haven't checked to see of H.264 is in that version of Compressor (or does Compressor use the QT components?)
Files reduced by at least 1mb in size (9-12mb files orig) and much better quality. However still considering it it's the way to go because most people won't have the latest QT to view compared to existing MPEG1 or Sorenson formats.

  • How do I correct the error; "PluginCoder error: no pligin DLLs" when attempting to burn a DVD with Premiere Elements 13

I just upgraded to PE 13 - removed PE12 prior to installing PE13 and now I cannot burn a DVD on my Win 7 Pro 64bit PC.  In my first attempt at burning a DVD PE 13 did not see the DVD burner - drive "z:".  I have a WD MyBook 4TB USB HD and had Security configured which created a Virtual CD on the drive.  I disabled the virtual CD and rebooted.  This time PE13 recognized the DVD burner but when trying to burn a DVD I received the No DLLs message and had to cancel the burn.  I tried the burn again and the DVD burner was no longer recognized.
I then removed PE13 and reinstalled it - no errors during the install.  Tried again and same result - no DLLs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time,
    Mark

  • DVD Slideshow Images Flickering

I was a Window user. Now I am a new MAC user. I bought iMac mainly to do slideshows and video. I heard that MAC is great for slideshows and videos. iLife is great. But.. There is always a but. This is a big BUT and I sincerely hope that going to MAC is not a disappointment. Here goes.
The slideshows in iPhoto 08 and iDVD 08 are great but after burning into DVD the images flickers.
Some part of the picture flickers not the whole picture. Even the add on text on the picture flickers.
In Windows I used Ulead Movie Factory, it had the same problem until Ulead implemented Anti Flicker option. Selecting this option makes the DVD pictures perfectly still like viewing your photos on the computer.
Is there an Anti Flicker setting in iDVD or iPhoto?
I am not producing DVD slideshow at the moment until I can find a solution as this flickering thingy is infuriating. A still picture must be still and not flickering on certain part of the picture/image. Railway tracks flickers madly, leaves on a tree flickers, blinds flickers, the face flickers, etc
Please helppppppp. Frustrated. I cannot go back to Windows and I do not want to. I am sure others must have this problem too. I pray that I have done something wrong else there won't be a solution until Apple can fix it. Prayyyy
Thanks. Sorry for being so long winded.

    Guys,
I am back. Sorry for taking so long. My wife has been grumbling about me spending so much time on the computer, blah, blah..
Again thank you all for all the suggestions. I have look at Photo to Movie tutorial. It is pretty good but I think Fotomagico is better. Yet to try it. Soon I hope.
As what Howard Topoff said, Ken Burns causes the Flickering and he is correct. I created a slideshow in iPhoto without Kenburns and send to iDVD. There are no flickers what so ever. The quality I got is as per Ulead DVD Movie Factory. Now, at least I am getting the same quality as before. I expect it to be better but hey... It is really a pity as I like Ken Burns a lot.
One thing maybe you guys can explain. iPhoto send to iDVD(not exporting) by creating a QT movie. I dragged the QT movie to Toast which has the option to tell you what type of file it is. Toast reported that the QT movie file is MPEG 4 video, 720x540 AND 13.5 fps. I would expect the fps will be around 25 or 30. Shouldn't iPhoto be sending out as high quality as possible so that iDVD will be able to recode it to suit PAL or NTSC? Unbelievable.
It is silly for iPhoto export option which can only export the biggest is large 640x480 and iDVD will have to recode it to 720 x 576 for PAL TV.
I have started to learn iMovie. iMovie has at least the option to set what QT quality is required when I Export Using Quicktime option. I can set whether it is PAL/NTSC/H.264,etc., frame rate, progressive or interlace, aspect ratio, etc. iPhoto has none of these. Is this an Apple oversight? I am doubtful.
Hey, rightly or wrongly, I am beginning to be a sceptic when it comes to Apple's intentions as those things that are missing are basics that should be part of the software.
Hopefully in a few days time, I can post more, not if my wife can help it. Nag, nag, nag.
F Shippey, PAL is 720 x 576. I will try a few photos by resizing as per your suggestions but first I would like to look at iMovie.
    Cheers.

  • QT Pro, What format produces the closest quality to HD

    Hello Experts,
I need a bit of guidance here with exporting slide shows from Motion Pictures HD (comes with Toast 7) to QT Pro and then back to Toast to burn DVD's. I have burned countless disc, countless ways with different codecs and their subsequent bit rates and various parameters and am still not quite satisfied with the results for resolution. Perhaps I am expecting too much after viewing the slide show direct from G5/Motion Picutres HD/DLP or PC monitor but surely there is a way of getting a higher level of detail onto DVD's?
The best approach so far that I have found is to export into QT Pro @ 1368x768 as jpeg images with the Best compression set and HQ Export. I have tried Pal, NTSC, H.264, tiff, graphics, and a litany of other codecs but perhaps I am not optimizing the files for best quality.
Curiously when viewing some of the .mov's directly from QT such as Pal or NTSC codecs the show looks way different from the burned disc, and much worse I might add. On the other hand when I export as jpegs to QT and viewing directly with QT the show is awesome until I burn the DVD and the res drops again. All images initially were 1024x768 ppi, jpegs at highest setting in Photoshop.
    Thanks in advance.

Currently, there is no way that you can produce a standards-based HD DVD, so it's a little difficult to understand what you are trying to achieve. NTSC video DVDs are limited to 720 x 480 resolution so you can't get HD quality with a standard video DVD. DVD Studio Pro 4 allows you to create an Apple proprietary form of HD DVDs, but you need a G5 and QuickTime 7 in order to view these discs (as well as DVD Studio Pro 4 to create them).
However, it you want to create a very dynamic, movie-based, video/photo slide show at the highest possible resolution then I'd suggest H.264. But you'll need a fairly robust G5 if you want smooth, high-frame-rate playback.
Otherwise, just stick with JPEG in either a movie format (Motion JPEG) or as a series of still photos using Tiger's built-in slide show feature (or similar software). The latter (original still photos) viewed with a slide show application would probably give you the highest quality but it limits what you can do with motion and special effects.
As for Motion JPEG, I just took a series of 1680 x 1050 JPEG stills and opened them as an image sequence in the QuickTime Pro Player and then I exported that as a Motion JPEG A high quality movie at the same resolution and frame rate as the original image sequence and I couldn't tell any difference between the original JPEG stills and the finished Motion JPEG movie. But, of course, there is no way you can get that kind of quality on a standard video DVD.
If you want to create a standard video DVD then you will be limited to a resolution of approximately 720 x 480 and as far as sharpness and resolution it probably won't make much difference what format or codec you choose before you actually create your DVD (i.e. just import the original JPEG photos). Also, depending upon the tools you use to create your DVD you may or may not want to rescale the vertical dimensions in order to compensate for NTSC's non-square pixels.<small><hr width="75%"><small>If this suggestion helps in any way, a confirmation or acknowledgment would be appreciated, since that would also help others who may be having the same difficulty. • Premiere elements does not recognize Blu-Ray disc, says media not present.  Under 12 I was able to record 3 blu-ray dvds using the same burner and discs I'm trying with 13.  What is the problem?

I installed PE13 and cannot burn blu-ray DVDs.  I was able to burn 3 blu-ray DVDs using PE12.  When I select DVD from the menu it recogniazes that it is not a stadard DVD as I get an 'incorrect media' error message.  It will burn standard DVDs of the same video using standard DVD mefia.

  • CS4 Exporting widescreen AVI or Quicktime problems...

    Hi.
Ive been pulling my hair out with this one for a long time and can't seem to get anywhere with it despite searching the net for an anwer that works for me.
I simply want to export a short video as a PAL widescreen AVI or Quicktime movie, I really don't mind which.
My problem is that no matter what settings I try, the video either comes out slightly stretched with black bars to the left and right (below left) or reduced in size rather than fullscreen (below right).
The images below are from VLC player set to fullscreen viewing. I thought it might be an isue with VLC but I get the same problem when I try it with Quicktime player and when I uploaded the final video to the net...  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RZuhsrM6tY
The settings that got me the above results are:
    Format: Microsoft AVI or Quicktime
    Preset: Pal DV Widescreen
    Codec: DV Pal or H.264
Width and Height: 720 x 576 (greyed out and locked, unless using H.264 Codec)
I've tried interprating my footage to conform to the pixel aspect ratio of  D1/DV PAL Widescrren 16:9 (1:4587)  which helped  but the image is still not fullscreen if you see what I mean?
If anyone can tell me what settings I should be using I would be eternally greatful because I'm going to lose my mind if I don't figure it out soon. Surely it can't be that difficult or unusual export format!?
Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
    Stuart.

    Jim Simon wrote:
The problem is with the players.  You need to tell them to unsquish the video manually.  They don't do it automatically.
YouTube needs a square pixel export.  You would not use this export for upload to YouTube.  You'd export a separate file specifically for that.
how do I manually tell the players to do that?
I am struggling with the same issue: DV PAL is always 4:3  720x576 - so where does the "PAL DV Widescreen" export setting (PAR parameter) come into play?
DV PAL 720x576 16:9 letterbox source footage was captured at PAR 1.0940
    sequence is same PAR
what should be my export settings for:
    1. creating a file to be displayed correctly on a flat screen TV monitor using a DVD standard player
    2. creating a file to be  displayed correctly on a computer monitor using a Windows OS / players
    3. creating a file to be uploaded on youtube (I got that exported and uploaded and  displayed alright by tagging it yt:crop=16:9). I think I exported it as Sq pixel PAR
    4. Encore settings for creating a DVD with these videos to be  displayed on both TV monitor and PC monitor.
All  export settings I tested the file with produced a lightly 'fattened' image when played back on my mac using QT, exept the Sq pixel export which looks perfect on my mac. No Sq pixel exported files show in QT player Info window: "720x576 (788x576)" - why is that?
    Thank you

  • IMovie 11 compression options lost ?

    Hi everybody !
Yesterday I was trying to export my iMovie project as I usually do, using QuickTime.
When I opened the video option to set the compressor to use I noticed some options were missing (e.g. "None", to export without using compression).
    How is it possible ?
Before Lion OS I'm sure this option was available (I always export my projects without compression).
    Please ... help me ...
    Thanks everybody,
    Stefano.

    Hi, thanks for your answer.
    Unfortunately I cannot see them.
The only options available now are:
    1) Animation
    2) Apple Intermediate Codec
    3) DV - PAL
    4) DV/DVCPRO - NTSC
    5) DVCPRO - PAL
    6) DVCPRO50 - NTSC
    7) DVCPRO50 - PAL
    8) H.264
    9) PHOTO JPEG
    10) VIDEO MPEG-4
After "H.264" I had "None", to export clips without compression.
I'm pretty sure this happened after Lion OS update.
Also "Apple Pixlet Video", "JPEG 2000" and "PNG" codecs were available before Lion OS.
Could it be an issue about Quicktime ?

  • PE13 Audio Stutter on Export to AVCHD

PE13 users, I need a bit of advice on troubleshooting an export of some HD video to AVCHD. Coming from PowerDirector 12, I just purchased PE13 and am experimenting with the software. Several video clips shot via Sony camcorder 1920x1080 60i 30 FPS, none more than about 2 minutes each, for a total of about 7 minutes. I've imported these clips into a new PD13 project, added a few transitions, and exported as M2T - H264 1920x1080i 30 (audio setting: Dolby Digital, 192 kbps, 48  kHz, Stereo). Video looks great, however, audio stutters a bit in some places, a lot in others, and plays fine for stretches. It should be noted that I exported even longer video of similar settings via PowerDirector and have not experienced any audio stutter ever.
When I export this same project as MP4 - H264 1920x1080p 30 (audio setting: AAC, 160 kbps, 48  kHz, Stereo) the audio plays flawlessly.
Are there any settings that may eliminate this stuttering when exporting as M2T - H264? It looks like I may be able to reduce the kbps of the M2T file to 160, but would rather not if it wouldn't make any difference anyway. I'll experiment when I get home to see if lowering kbps helps, but in the meantime, any other advice would be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

and have a choice of Presets
    Presets
    H.264 1440 x 1080i NTSC Dolby
    H.264 1440 x 1080i PAL Dolby
    H.264 1440 x 1080p NTSC Dolby NEW
    H.264 1920 x 1080i NTSC Dolby
    H.264 1920 x 1080i PAL Dolby
    H.264 1920 x 1080p NTSC Dolby NEW
The 1080p ones have frame rate of 23.97 progressive frames per second. The 1080i have are either
25 interlaced frames per second or 29.97 interlaced frames per second depending on NTSC or PAL.
If you want to export to file saved to the computer hard drive, a good choice in your case for a later burn to Blu-ray disc format on Blu-ray disc
    would be
    Publish+Share
    Computer
    AVCHD
    with Presets = MP4 H.264 1920 x 1080p30
You cannot customize the burn to presets. But, you can customize the preset for the export to file saved to the computer hard drive.
But, those settings will be overwritten in the encoding process in the burn to process to give you the format cited above.
Please let us know if that targets your question.
    Thank you.

  • Anamorphic PAL DV to H.264 (Pal 16:9)

    Hi all,
First I'll confess to being a noob to video editiing etc. and have the following issue:
    *The Setup:*
Recording = MacPro (OS 10.6.3), capturing into Final Cut Pro via a ADVC300 Firewire unit. This Set to capture DV PAL 48k Anamorphic.
Playback = Mac Mini connected to Sony EX503 via DVI>HDMI converter. (Sound out put through optical).
    *The Process:*
Basically new to Final Cut & Compressor so appologize for ignorance.
Basic premise is this I initial record programs on our SKY HD box. The ones we want to keep I capture on the MacPro via the ADVC300. Edit out all the adverts etc in FCP. Then Export out the edited DV stream (as DV video).
Then Drop the edited DV stream into compressor and compress with the following settings:
    Name: Untitled QuickTime Movie 1
    Description: No description
    File Extension: mov
    Estimated size: unknown
    Audio Encoder
    IMA 4:1, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Video Encoder
    Format: QT
    Width: 720
    Height: 576
Pixel aspect ratio: PAL CCIR 601 (16:9)
    Crop: None
    Padding: None
    Frame rate: 25
    Frame Controls: Automatically selected: Off
    Codec Type: H.264
    Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
    Pixel depth: 24
    Spatial quality: 100
    Min. Spatial quality: 25
    Key frame interval: 25
    Temporal quality: 50
    Min. temporal quality: 25
I then copy onto the mac mini and play back on the TV via Front Row.
    *The Problem:*
Recording is fine as is editing and outputing the edited DV stream to a QT file. However when I drag onto compressor and compress with the included settings to create my small play back file is were the problem lies. The final H.264 file plays fine in quicktime player (looking wide screen), both on the MacPro and Mini. However when played through Front Row the aspect ratio is a 4:3 (but slightly smaller in the frame) image instead of 16:9.
Now the original capture by FCP is a DV - PAL, 720 x 576 (768 x 576), which looks squashed.
After editing and saving from FCP the new edited stream is DV - PAL, 720 x 576 (1024 x 576), and displays 16:9 in quicktime.
However after compression the files is ; H.264, 720 x 576, Millions AAC, 2 channels, 48000 Hz and looks fine in quicktime play but not in Front Row. Incidentally the edited DV streams look fine in front row.
Any advice on what I need to do to make the final H.264 file a PAL 720x576 (16:9) which displays correctly through Front Row.
    Thanks
    Steve
By the way the only thing that has seemed to work is using apples 'apple tv' settings for SD anamorphic but this works on the NTSC 480 lines (which means loosing rez) or 'Apple TV' HD 720 (16:9) but this looks too pixelated.

I've also used Quicktime Pro, Export and it's still slow ...

  • How to use H.264 footage with uncompressed 8bit PAL footage

    Hi
I have a FCP project with the uncompressed 8 bit PAL settings and FPS is 25 as per PAL standards.
Now i have some 2 minutes of footage fron Canon 7D with H.264 settings. Frame size is 1920*1080 and FPS is 24. I was trying various options to use the footage but failed. already done with various exports like making a new projects of the H.264 settings and export the file as PAL setting with 720*576 and FPS 25, but the result is really bad. Video is shaking and pixels are damaged. Pan shots and other moving shots lost their quality totally.
I even installed an EOS codec, CE1110X, but dont know if i am using it the way it should be or not.
I even tried to export the footage from Premiere CS5 but the result was even bad.
    What to do? Please help.
    Thanx
    Pawan Sharma

    hi
just tried converting the footage with mpeg streamclip but the problem remains. Jitters are there and pixels are damaged. Details of the shots are in poor quality. I think the main reason behind this is the source footage is on 24 FPS and i am trying to convert it to 25 FPS. What you think? If this could be the possible reason?
I will get the full card structure in few hours and try the Log and Transfer procedure and get back to share the experience.
    Shane,
thanks a lot for the Log and Transfer tutorial, with the help of that tutorial now i can easliy transfer the clips, once i get the full card structure.
In the mean time if you guys can suggest something else please share.
I am working on a uncompressed 8 bit PAL project.
    Thanks
    Pawan
