.DV quality vs. .MOV (and even .MPG)

The iMovie guys sent me over here with this.
I'm a Windows (and sometimes Linux) guy. But occasionally I have to deal with Macintosh stuff and the process is uniformly confusing. I'm hoping someone can take my (too limited) information and give me some guidance.
I'm part of the A/V team at church. We have two buildings and two computers projecting slides/videos/etc for the worship services. Both computers are Windows. One runs a worship program called MediaShout, the other runs SongShowPlus. Mediashout will display a Quicktime video, SSP will not.
Not that I never get Quicktime MOVs. But usually they are small and I run them through a free Transcoder call Super by eRightSoft and convert them to MPEG-1.
So, of course, this week I got two giant Quicktime files to deal with. One was an 819MB .mov file that was FTPd to me. No problem. It played fine on the MediaShout machine and (after some fiddling with framerates and bitratres) I got an MPG that showed fine in SSP.
The next was more problematic. Our associate pastor's daughter had made an iMovie on her laptop but it wouldn't burn to CD and she didn't know what to do and they wanted it this weekend and she had to go somewhere. So they handed me the laptop.
Did I mention I don't really do Macintoshes?
Anyhow, I thrashed around with it for a while. I discovered that it wouldn't burn to CD because it was > 900MB. But also, it was trying to burn an iMovie project file, which was probably not going to help me. After some more thrashing I found 'Share' and found 'Share Quicktime' and even found 'Full Quality'.
Now it is 1.05GB. Luckily I have a 2GB thumbdrive, though I had to erase a lot of things. More surprising than the size is the suffix. This is a .DV file. Never seen one of those.
So I put the .DV file on the SSP computer, which sure enough does not recognize the file. The computer itself does, however, giving its icon a Quicktime symbol. I drop the DV file on Super and, after a bit, the program generates an MPG. It takes a few trys at some of the Super options before I get rid of the artifacting but, all-in-all, it looks good.
Then I take the original file over to the MediaShout computer. The .DV file is recognized and it appears that all is well. Until I show the video.
At full screen, the video is terrible. This is actually a slide show and what it shows is nasty, pixelated photos. At the default Quicktime screen size it looks quite decent but at full screen it looks horrible.
But ... the MPG made from the same .DV file looks great. How can the information for the high quality pics be in there but Quicktime fail to show it?
Is there some kind of setting in the Quicktime player I need to change to get quality fullscreen?
Is there something I could have done within iMovie that would have relieved these problems?
Is there a way to convert .DV to .MOV to regain the fullscreen quality?

illweather--I think I have a solution for you. I think the sound difference is due to dither introduced by some apps, but not by iTunes. Try using Audio Hijack to dither the least significant bits in the iTunes output. Here's the response I posted to another forum:
I solved the mystery. Turns out it's because iTunes (with volume at full, no eq, and no audio processing) truly outputs a raw 16-bit stream, while Logic always outputs a dithered 24-bit stream.
With iTunes, a 16-bit CD gets played back with zeroes in the 8 least significant bits. Logic Pro, however, seems to convert everything to 32-bit float, then dithers to 24-bits, even if all faders are at unity and there's no processing being done. So when you use Logic to play a 16-bit file, you end up with some dither in the 8 bottom bits.
When I compared the digital outputs of iTunes and Logic and concluded they were identical, that was done by recording digitally to a 16-bit DAT machine. The outputs WERE identical to 16-bits, but the full 24-bit output was slightly different.
For whatever reason, some (all ?) 24-bit D/A converters don't seem to sound nearly as good with a truncated 16-bit input. That dither introduced by Logic makes a very noticeable improvement in the sound. I found I could replicate the effect in iTunes by routing output through Audio Hijack and inserting a 24-bit dither plug-in. Then Logic and iTunes sounded virtually identical. Problem solved!
I can't say that I understand why dithering 16-bit audio to 24-bits improves the D/A conversion, though. Typically, dither is used when decreasing wordlength, and it's very clear why using dither in this situation improves resolution. When the original source is 16-bit, though, I don't understand why dithering to 24-bits improves D/A conversion. Very clear from listening that it does, though. Anyone have an explanation ?
Hey, thanks for the advice, and maybe my discovery will be useful to others.

Why is the quality of movies and pictures exported to the external hard drive lowered?

Are you speaking of manually moving these files, or using an application to export?
When you use the the term "export", it usually entails an application performing some kind of file conversion, rather than a simple transfer. It is during conversion to another file format that information may be lost through lossy compression, or by settings of the export.
Anytime you convert a file to another format, there will usually be some loss or degradation. Tghis can't be helped, as one format may not support every information characteristic the original one did.

I created project in iMovie then exported it to MP4 and also MOV file at highest definition possible + I added it to iDVD and had a number issues about encoding errors regarding the mp4 file. MOV worked but the quality was terrible.....
    MOV file is as follows:

    Colour Profile: HD (1-1-1)
    Dimensions: 1920 x 1080
    Duration: 12:33

First of all, Hunt--thanks for responding!
"First, where are you playing the MPEG-2, that you see that jitter?"
On both a MacBook Pro, an Acer laptop and my Mac Tower. I would love to think that it is a problem with the playback system, and that if I merely send the file off to the duplicator they won't have the same problem. Maybe that is the case...I don't know if I have a choice rather than sending it off to see. But it happens in the same spots, in the same way, on all three of the players so I'm a little reluctant to have faith.
"Another thing that can cause jitter in an MPEG-2 is the Bit-Rate - higher the Bit-Rate, the better the quality, but the larger the file. For a DVD, one is limited by the total Bit-Rate (both Audio & Video), but with longer prodcutions, some users choose too low a Bit-Rate. If this is the issue, one would need to go back to the original Project and do a new Export/Share."
Of course, but in the case there is no more 'original project.' It is gone like the wind, stolen along with his computer and backups.
I think I am stuck using one of two files as my master: a DVD he burned where I only see the stutter/vibration/jitter once, or the mpeg2 file where I see it three times. Hopefully, the duplication house can rip if off of one of them and not see the jitter. I know that in audio, my personal filed, you can do a lot to enhance already existing sound--EQ, compression, tape saturation emulation software, etc. I guess I'm hoping there is some kind of analog to the video world that address jitter after a source has been printed--if indeed the source has been printed to be jittery.
    Thanks,
    Doug

i figured it out and needed to click manage manually!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was EXACTLY what I needed about the purchases I made from my device. However, is there a way to re-download other ones you've made from a computer? Because I realized some of them were not just purchased from my device.
This is a picture of what it looks like now:
    http://tinypic.com/r/107quxu/7
As you can see, the stuff circled in red doesn't give me an option to download from Cloud Beta because it already says "downloaded".
any way to get around that?

If you want to remove the movies & videos from your iPod Nano in order to transfer to your computer, connect your iPod Nano to your computer.  Double click your iPod Nano icon.  Double click the DCIM folder.  Your recorded video content will be in your DCIM folder.  Drag the video content onto your desktop & place them where you want.

  • How do I Stop automatic downloads of Movies and Shows... Apparently iTunes will begin downloading every available show or movie I have even after I have told it to delete the shows

I have Season 1 of Elementary. I do not want it downloaded to my laptop. I purchase a new movie and begin the download of the movie. iTunes immediately begins downloading EVERYTHING that I have not downloaded. the Entire Season of Elementary along with all the other Seasons I have and ALL the iTunes Extras that I HATE SO MUCH cause they wont go away. Even when I Hide the iTunes Extras... They still want to download...  I have gone thru preferences and settings but can't find any setting to stop this type of action... Anyone have any ideas???

I would try deselecting the options Always check for available downloads, Download pre-orders when available, and Automatic Downloads of Music, Apps and Books, under Edit > Preferences > Store, sign out of the store, clear the iTunes store cache under Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and clear the contents of <Media Folder>\Downloads.
In some cases the iTunes Store may remember that you have items waiting to be delivered in your queue. In such cases you will need to ask the store support staff to flush the queue for you.

    Help, please.

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cache (and Clear History)
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • HT5287 If DVD Movies, Audio CD's and even burning CD and DVD's are not supported, what is the point of DVD & CD Sharing then? Wouldn't it just be better to remote in or use a thumb drive if it's only able to be used for data transfer?

Or am I missing the bigger picture?

As long as you have a Superdrive or an external burner/drive, burning, watching, installing, etc. from CD or DVD will work just fine. And so will sharing.

    BDAqua and old comm guy,
thanks so much for the good advice. I used both of these and now the problem has stopped. first I checked the finder crash logs and yes, my finder had been crashing repeatedly.
next I removed the preferences files from the library, rebooted from the CD and ran disk utility to repair preferences. since then my computer has been stable.
there were some preferences that didn't get repaired when I ran disk utility. I am copying them here to refer to later if I need to. I don't understand what these mean to me:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/Filesystems/AppleShare/afpLoad" has been modified and will not be repaired.

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.
Additionally, your 24 hours don't start until you begin to watch the movie, you have 30 days to start watching the movie.

Try disabling the computer's antivirus and firewall for the network problem.
Also for the original problem try the following if Ana's suggestions does not work
    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Thanks

    Hi Avelyn,
Click on the Apple and then About this Mac>More Info. Click on the "Storage" tab to see what is using up all of your storage.
That might help you to determine what you need to clean up.

  • What about movie and picture quality witht he GMA950?

    Hello,
I have seen many posts talking about the performance of the macbook when playing games.
Since I am mot a computer geek, I was wondering how the macbook was when playing movies and watching pictures? I mean, will the quality of the video (or pictures) be different if I were to watch the same movie (or pictures) on a macbook and a macbook pro?
I do not play games so, gaming is not a concern. But movie quality is important for me.
    Could anyone share his/her experience?
    thanks,
    JM

Movies quality and playback is fine, but you may have to put up with some fan noise depending upon the video you are watching. Of course that can be solved with headphones. You may want to listen to the movie with headphones anyway, because the MacBook doesn't have the best audio coming out of the internal speakers--especially concerning volume level.
