DV to Mac Backup

I want to take all of my DV tapes and store transfer them over to my external hard drive via the iMac. What is the best quality way to do this for editing later with iMovie? I know it will take a lot of hard drive space but that is no issue.

Virtually all Apple's products that import DV video will preserve (virtually) all the quality that's there. iMovie, QuickTime Pro, Final Cut Pro, Final Cut Express. They all import with the same quality.
iMovie lets you automatically import video with scene breaks, where new clips are created where you start/stop shooting. iMovie also lets you limit the length of clips to <n> minutes. Both feature help you later control the size of the project.
You don't generally want projects to be real long, to save disk space. Best to keep them to less than an hour.
In iMovie, the imported video is stored inside the project itself and is available only to that project unless copied to others. That's not true for the Final Cut applications, where projects can "share" source video.

  • .MAC Backup Program

My version of Backup has gone haywire. I was using 3.0 and after a System Software Update Backup no longer worked properly. When I open Backup, non of the menu items such as "new plan, rename plan, remove plan, history, edit plan, backup now, restore, etc. are available for use. So, I downloaded the most recent version, Backup 3, Version 3.1 (v356). I still have no access to this program. When I open the Backup program a window opens showing my "Migrated Drive Plan, next backup schdeuled for April 7, 2006 at 3:00 AM." When I highlight this plan the radio buttons for "restore" and "backup" do not become active. Therefore, I can't do anything even after download of the most recent version. Thanks for any help, Bruce

It seems that you made a wrong turn on the main page of Apple Discussions & ended up in the forum dedicated to the word processing/page layout application, Pages. This is very easy to do with so many folders within folders. I think you'll get the best response to your questions in the .Mac Backup forum. The path to that forum is Discussions: Digital LIfe > .Mac Forums > Backup.

  • IPhoto 6 & Restoring from .mac Backup

Thankyou to all of the experienced mac users who post to these forums, most helpful to people relatively new to mac's.
I have been happily using iPhoto 6.0.1 and the .mac backup utility weekly. last night I needed to reinstall Tiger, then iPhoto - which went fine. I used the .mac Backup software to restore all iPhoto files to the original locations - which also went fine. I can see the 'Pictures" folder contains all the iPhoto photos and data.
However when I load iPhoto I have no photos in my library. I have tried the Apple + Alt keys whilst loading iPhoto and have selected all the options, but nothing seems move.
    Q. - Could someone give me advice as to how to tell iPhoto to display the photos which are in the Data folder ?
Thanks in advance - Paul P
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi Paul,
Is the library in the Pictures folder named "iPhoto Library"?
When you reinstalled tiger, did you use the same username and short user name?
Have you tried launching iPhoto with the Option key held down until you get a message window? In this window you can choose another library to open. You want to choose your library in the Pictures folder. It might even be already chosen in the navigate window so look at the screenshots to help you out.
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer, highlight it, then click the "open" button.

  • Moving to new laptop from .mac backup

My iBook (running Tiger) died last week, but fortunately I was able to quickly backup the entire hard drive using the .Mac Backup program beforehand. Now I've got a MacBook Pro coming (running Leopard), and I'm wondering how best to do a setup and restore. Should I...
    1. Simply restore the entire backup, replacing the existing Leopard install, and then reinstall (upgrade) to Leopard
    2. Expand the backup to an external Firewire drive, then use Leopard to setup the computer from that drive (assuming that's possible in Leopard)
    3. Partition the new hard drive and restore my old drive to one of the partitions (the primary initial problem being that my old drive has about 110 GB of data and the new drive is only 160 GB total)
    4. Restore in some other creative way I haven't yet considered
    5. Take my new computer to the Apple Store and let them figure it out.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, since I'll be new to Leopard. I've got to get back up and running in the quickest way possible, but yet I don't want to do something that will cause me more trouble/work later on.

    Tim
I don't know anything about .Mac but I'd be surprised if it provides you with a full bootable backup.
You wrote <I don't want to do something that will cause me more trouble/work later on. >
That being the case I would strongly suggest that you procure for yourself a FireWire external drive, and on a regular basis make a complete bootable clone of your entire hard drive. It's the only real insurance for that rainy day when something horrible happens and your computer crashes.

  • .Mac Backup vs Time Machine

Not sure I've got this figured out. Do I use both .Mac's Backup along with TM or do I use one or the other? How/why would I use both?

    1) Dot Mac's Backup is extremely flexible in meeting many different user backup scenarios
-Apple provides numerous Quickpicks for easy data type and Application's data backup selections
-Easily configurable for any single data item to numerous data items to be backed up
-Can create multiple backup Plans each with their own backup time schedule
-Any Plan can backup to a combination of media each with their own backup schedule
-Can backup in compressed form to a user's .Mac iDisk (requires a .Mac subscription of ~$100/year)
    -Provides a flexible restore feature
-Has a specific .Mac Backup User forum for getting technical help from other users
-Can be used on Mac OS X version prior to Leopard as well as Leopard (Leopard does require Backup v3.1.2)
-The flexibility can confuse a user because of the multiple choices provided
-Provides a traditional Full + Incremental backups and uses backup space less efficient than for Time Machine but does retain data for as long as user wishes to keep it.
-Backup time schedules are done only on a daily basis. That is, a Plan can backup to a specific media only once per day automatically. To perform backups more frequently the user must do so manually.
    2) Time Machine (only available with Leopard)
-Apple provides a single interface for controlling what is to be backed up. This is done by a counter intuitive 'exclusion list'
-Time Machine will silently remove backup data (at least in its current form) which may be poorly understood by the user
-Time Machine, once setup, operates in the background automatically and captures data once per hour every day.
-Time Machine is restricted to backing up to HDs only. Backup to optical media and tape for example is not supported.
-Time machine has a easy to use browser for reviewing backups, managing backups, deleting unwanted data from backups and for restoring data.
-The Time Machine browser is tightly coupled with Apple's Address Book, Mail and iPhoto at this time. The Time Machine APIs are known to 3rd party developers for integrating their Apps much like Apple has done for Address Book for example.
-Time Machine User forum for technical help is available
-Time Machine is bundled with Leopard and does not require a .Mac subscription of ~$100/year. Mind you, Backup can be continued to be used after an initial $100 subscription expires.
-Time Machine uses the backup space very efficiently and far more so than does the traditional Backup's Full+Incrementals.
-Time Machine offers a single backup Plan whereas Backup provides numerous Plans. Plans in both can be changed at any time is user so desires.
I'm sure others can chip in with other pros/cons for you. However, this should provide you with a starting point for comparing the two.
BTW - Time Machine and Backup co-exist without issues.

  • Mac Backup Problems

Has anyone found and fixed problems with Mac Backup where it copies files slowly and then 'hangs' at 'checksum' point.  Doesn't complete.  I'm backing up to a WD Mybook World Edition NAS in a different room which Time Machine won't see.  Backup was working OK but now won't.

That does seem to happen on very large backups (which Apple's Backup app really wasn't designed for).
Can you split the backup Plan into smaller parts?
I don't think that NAS hasn't been updated to work with Time Machine on Lion yet, but should work with Snow Leopard, if you have a decent WIFI connection.  Make sure you have the latest version of the software.

  • Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?

Can I retrieve files from a modern Mac Backup drive to a PPC Mac?  I have been having problems with my Macbook Pro not starting up.  I need to figure out how to access files with my PPC Desktop; if possible.
What type of files can I access and what type I cannot?
My Macbook Pro: MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), 750GB HD, 2.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM
    My PPC: Power mac G4/Upgraded 1.2GHZ /800+RAM/3 HD =400+ GB, Mac OS X (10.4.2)
    Thanks in advance,
    God bless

You will need software that is compatible with the data files on the backup drive, ie. if they are .doc files you will need Word (or a substitute).
You don't mention what type of files are on the drive so it is hard to be specific.

  • Can I use .mac Backup to restore to Leopard?

Before my iMac failed, I had kept the complete Home folder backed up on an external HDD using .mac Backup 3.x (Tiger 10.4.11 and iLife 2006) Is it possible to restore the backed up copy to a new installation of Leopard?

It it a Tiger backup? If so, you might be able to migrate from it, but you cannot simply use is as a replacement for a Leopard home directory.

  • How can I see another mac backup on time machine?

how can I see another mac backup on time machine?

Bob thanks, but that didn't solve my problem, I went to question 17 and went into the Browse my Time Machine and it also didn't find or recognize the other Mac.  I know it's in there because when I open the other Mac and Enter the Time Machine, I can see it through that Mac, and I have the same problem there, where I can't see my Mac.
In short, when I back up a Mac (doesn't matter which one) I can verify its backup as long as I use that Mac, but I cannont verfiy the backup on that Mac using another Mac and vice versa.
Also, I never used to have to do anything to see both on the same Mac.  So I don't know what changed.
    There must be another way.
    Thanks

  • How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?

    Hi,
How to save SOME time machine Mac backups from the TM disk to other disk WITHOUT formatting the destination disk?
I have a Time Machine disk (A) including the backups of several different Macs (B, C, D & E) generated with an old Mac OS X 10.5.8 (iMac PowerPC) over the years.
I have transferred the old Mac contents to a new Mac with OS X 10.8.3 using Migration Assitant. All OK.
Now, I want to erase such TM disk A to use if for other purposes, but first, I would like to RECOVER the backups of some Macs inside it (D and E). Is that possible WITHOUT formatting the destination disk and selecting only some Macs from the TM disk and not the fulll TM disk? How?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I do not think that is messy, anway. I simply used the same external disk as Time Machine disk for different Macs. And that worked OK all the time for years.
The ExternalTimeMachineDisk contains the folder Backups.backupdb
which contains the following folders (each one corresponding to the Time Machine backup made from each Mac):
    Mac1
    Mac2
    MacBook1
    MacBook2
In relation to my message above, is it possible to select specific files, folders or full Mac backups from such Time Machine disk and save them to other disk? How?
    Thanks.

  • .Mac Backup does not recognize Iomega Rev USB drive. HELP!

    1) When I use .Mac Backup and configure destination to backup to Iomega Rev USB drive, Backup cannot recognize the Rev drive. It sees this drive as "Unknown volume". What's wrong? How do I resolve this problem so Backup can recognize Rev drive? Strange thing is that Rev drive shows up on the Mac desktop okay. In other words, the Mac desktop recognize Rev drive okay but not the Backup software.
    2) What do you recommend for a reliable external hard drive for backup?
    3) How do I send email to Apple Support? I tried .Mac site but could not find their support email address.
    Thanks.

Seagate 1TB 7200 32mb. Two of them. I had ramjet send me a new one because I thought the first was defective.
No dialogue box. Nothing in DU or DW.
Put drive in bay 1 and DU saw it. Can't see it in 3&4.

  • How to find old export presets on an old Mac backup?

    Hey,
I have just bought a new computer MBPR and have started from scratch with everything, instead of loading it from my last backup from my last MBPR. However, I had a load of export presets with different watermarks etc that I would like to load onto my new machine.
    How can I do this?
At first I thought I could find where the presets sit on my current system: /Users/Mikeys/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom/Export Presets/User Preset).
So I tried finding this folder on one of my backups, but there is NO Users/Mikeys/Library folder?
    The only similar folder is this: /Volumes/Mac Mac/Backups.backupdb/Mike’s MacBook Pro/2014-01-07-204958/Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Lightroom
Which doesn't house the presets, only the Registration information
    Help please?

  • .Mac Backup and Time Machine?

Do I still need the normal .mac backup if I use Time Machine?

First some quick background so you'll understand the asperity of my answer. I'm in IT and until 1993 I was an IT consultant to businesses and professionals that didn't require a full time IT staff. I've seen businesses go bankrupt due to data loss and I've experienced data loss myself on two occasions: one major and several minor. Today I consider any data loss completely unacceptable. Just imagine if you lost the only set of pictures of your child's first birthday party. Those are the stakes today.
Time Machine is very promising but at version 1 I consider it untested technology at present. I've seen too many little hiccups on its data acquisition cycle to consider it totally trustworthy. At this time I have my desktop connected to a FW drive and TM is doing its thing but I am also backing up my data weekly and daily using Deja Vu. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
Note too that Time Machine is backing up data to a drive in your home/office. In the event of fire, flood, theft, or other disaster chances are the TM drive is going too. An off-site backup is very important! I back up my data to DVD regularly with a copy going with my wife to her work place.

  • .mac backup information

I am going to be purchasing a intel imac soon and am gathering info on how to best transfer my files from my powerbook G4 to the imac. I do use the .mac backup. Will I need anything besides .mac backup and will it be a easy process?
    Thank You

    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

.mac backup needsd to be paid for. i know that there is a trial, but i don't know if the backup is a part of that. if it is, and that suits you - go ahead, but there is an app that comes with os x that allows you to migrate system preferences including apps and documents and pictures and videos...it is conveniently called migration assistant and it is in the utilities folder in the apps directory. you can also migrate across platforms - windows and such...hope that helps.

  • Restoring Pictures from .mac backup utility to a new G5

Does anyone know how to do this? The migration assistant would not bring all my iphoto library pictures onto my new G5. At the Apple store they tried to export the photos from my old G4 onto a external drive and then bring them into the G5. When I got a chance to review the photos in IPhoto 6 (I originally had approx 5,000 pictures on the G4) on my new G5, it was evident that many photos are missing. When I scroll through the Library there are now sections that show hundreds of white squares where photos used to be. The people at the Apple store said the restore function of the .mac backup utility should not be used to import photos onto a different computer because they are "tied to a different user folder" that resides on the G4 and not on the new G5. My guess is that I probably need to get these actually reimported into Iphoto 6 or copied into the dated subfolder that Iphoto 6 is "seeing" but which is empty. The funny thing is that my slide shows all tranferred but many of them also are empty. I almost wish that I didn't purchase the G5. Can any of you offer me suggestions om how to resolve this?
    Power Mac G4 and G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Polecat:
Do you still have access to the iPhoto Library folder on the G4? If so just copy it to the G5, either over a LAN or via Firewire and Target Mode into the Pictures folder on the G5. Then download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, substituting your account name for mine. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field.
When you next launch iPhoto on the G5 the library should be complete.
    Do you Twango?
