DV2000 Graphics card overheating on idle
Hey folks.
Seems I'm not alone in this (according to google searches)
My Go6150 chip idles at 82oC on idle, which is really bad. Not only does it cause the underside of my laptop to heat up, the plastic will get so hot it'll burn your hand (or worse, lap) The cpu runs at 42o idle, but notebook regularly crashes from video card overheating (and I'm not even gaming most times!) Any idea what gives? Solutions? I thought about taking the laptop apart and pulling out the logic board to try and change out the thermal compound(or pad) with some Arctic silver but I'd rather not have to do that myself if there is an easier way to fix it up.
What say you?
me, i just help other people ok, i have exoerienced this and i dint want anybody to exp it ANYmore, ok i also used to idle at around 85, take note, im not running anything, what i did is get a copper coin, 1 cent, i softened it, opened up the notebook, saw the gpu, with the garbage thermal pad, i cleaned all the crap of thermal grease hp used, and put arctic silver 5, just small dob. put the penny on top of the gpu, and on top of the penny, a small dob again, close the heatsink with it, and make sure it touches the penny, tighten it a bit so that the gpu wont be separated to the board again, in down to 50 degrees celsius, if i were you, i would do this before your laptop dies, it will PREVENT it, and extend your laptops life up to 3 years, if you do not have any experience, call for a technician, have him done it.. the gpu itself doesnt overheat, its the design flaw of the heatsink to the gpu, the thermal pad they used breakes allowing the gpu to have a gap of 2mm and when the sokdering in the gpu gets hot, they expand, so it would be very helpful for you to tighten it ABIT, you wont regret it. i promise you just be careful you might damage your board, so i would recommend you to have it in a technician, i wont say hope this helps, it really will help you, if you have will to do it, dont hesitate that it might be hard,

I have a 2010 Mac Pro with the ATI 5770. I got some error messages running a program in the Terminal ("ERROR: Invalid block found on ATI Radeon HD 5770 (#1), possible driver or hardware issue") and decided to investigate the issue further. It seems like the 5770 is very prone to overheating. I used iStat Menu to get the following data:
The temp of the 5770 is usually around 65° C.
When I use the GPU at 100% (or close to it), it immediately shoots up to around 90° C and the error messages start to appear.
Is this a defect? What can I do about it?Boost the other fans. Burt GPUs are designed to normally be able to run @ 80-90*C or more. GPUs run hot, though idle should be more like 40-55C.
Run under Windows where the GPU is better behaved probably isn't what you want to hear. But AMD Catalyst drivers and fan control will be better (instead of near non-existent).
Use SmcFanControl 2.2.x and try different profiles and before you do anything stressful, set it to 1500 rpm first and check, then see if 1200 rpm profile will work.
Good airflow around the back and getting in?

PowerBook has malfunctioning temperature sensor/overheating graphics card?
I just received a brand new high res PowerBook 15'', but, the free "Temperature Monitor" program, that monitors the outputs from the PowerBook's temperature sensors, seems to display the Graphics Processor's temperature incorrectly. Often, it says it is 212º F, but it wildly flunctuates between that and a more reasonable 114º. The "Specified Upper Limit" also changes, but seems to be 156.2º F. If it is the correct temperature, then my graphics card is overheating. What should I do?
To the contrary. All Macs have a graphics card. Not in the same way as a PC where the card is removable, but it is integrated into the computer. Otherwise they would either have some form of Apple graphics card or the graphics would leech off the main computer components. Mac OS X takes full advantage of hardware graphics technology (OpenGL, Quartz).
As for temperature, it is key to computer performance. If you've looked at PCs there are many different cooling options. The PowerBook has it's own ways. First it is built of aluminum which draws the heat away and reduces the temperature by 10%, and it has two cooling fans that run at low speeds for quiet operation, they will crank to full speed if the computer is under stress and is creating lots of heat. A G5 has an extensive and well thought out cooling system with thermal zones and liquid cooling on some models, good example of how extravagant they can get.
And Logan, does your computer feel 212˚? If not there is a malfunction in the program. If the computer is whirring about trying to cool itself when it feels normal, it is a hardware malfunction. Thry running a hardware test if it is a hardware malfunction.

MSI GX740 overheated graphic card?
Hi everyone,
im new to this forum but i need help how to deal with the overheating when playing games on my gx740 notebook, great machine otherwise!
I have surfed around and saw that many recommend to upgrade the vBios but i dont succed to do this, never starts the installation program when re-booted my computer, i have downloaded drivers and extracted them to a usb stick that i also manage to boot from, BUT it just stands disk error, press a key to continue login or something like that....
i never succed in this, i have like i said read alot in here but dont see which is up to date to do, tried download some nvflash and so also, the only thing i want i guess i want is to upgrade vbios, is there any other way to do this to get graphic card not overheated and reboot the computer!?? Around MAX of 107 c which is huge!! Normally stands around 100 when playing, i guess the card will not leave that long in that case!?
Any ideas?

With the Tool you can flash BIOS, EC-FW, vbios
Flash everything to the latest versions,
BIOS ==> http://www.msi.com/service/download/bios-11771.html
EC-FW ==> http://www.msi.com/service/download/firmware-11772.html
One by one.
For all use the same steps, i.e. point to the Tool to corespond .zip/.rar archive,
and tool will do the rest. -
?Is there a graphics card that will be compatible in my HP Pavilion dv2000 notebook (model dv2419us)? - This notebook has Windows 7 Home Premium.
- I was looking to take the free upgrade to WIndows 10 - I requested the reservation.
- Initial response was to wait for downloads would be available.
- Just got the message that it is not compatible with Windows 10 because it has an Nvidia Go GeForce 6150 graphics card.
- I contacted Nvidia about a card that would be comaptible with WIndows 10.
- Response was that couldn't recomment a replacement, and to contact HP.
- Does anyone know if there is a graphics card replacement for the HP Pavilion dv2000 notebook that would make it compatible with Windows 10?
...Or is my only option to not upgrade to Windows 10 or buy a new laptop?Hi there , Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great site to get answers and ask questions. I understand that you are inquiring about a Graphics Card Replacement. Unfortunately the Graphics Cards are not replaceable on the HP Pavilion dv2000 Notebook PC. They are attached directly to the motherboard. The only way to replace a Graphics Card would be to replace the whole Motherboard. Hope I answered your question. Have a great day!

Discrete graphics card performance drop after overheating
Recently I played Amnesia: The Dark Descent on my pc while overclocking slightly using Sapphire TRIXX. I changed GPU clock from 750 to 84x and memory clock from 900 to 10xx. During a cinematic the com crashed, ctrl at del failed to load up but sound was still coming out. I left it like this for2-5 min before force shutdown. When I turned on my laptop again n tried to play games there was a huge performance drop. Games running at 60 fps turned to 20 plus when using dedicated graphics card only ( I disabled dynamic mode n used fixed mode while playing amnesia also, which means I was purely using the dedicated graphics card.)
My laptop is a hp dm4 3005tx Beats edition, with Intel I5 2.5GHz processor and 8.00 gig ram. I also disabled paging file on my laptop btw, regretting this .
can some1 tell me hw to fix.this problem or can I replace my discrete graphics card? Because my laptop has Radeon hd 7470m and Intel hd graphicsThe graphics card is soldered on so no replacement. I would do a wipe and reload of the OS and stop overclocking laptop video cards. They are too sensitive to heat and other issues. You are asking for trouble, and may have already found it. At a minimum run DriverCleaner and remove the video driver until you get back to a low-res screen generic vga hardware and then reinstall the best driver you can find.

I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB)
I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts.The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
After five days of testing in the service they can not found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card. But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
What program are you trying to run? Is there anything in the system log?
I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software. -
Problem with recognising radeon 6490M graphics card on Pavilion dv6-6176sa
So,
My laptop was having some issues recently with the graphics, it basically wouldn't recognise either the intel or the radeon graphics card. I tried updating all drivers under the sun but nothing worked. In the end I formatted my computer and reinstalled windows, did all necessary updates windows and HP ones. Now my laptop would recognise both the intel and radeon in device manager but my computer was constantly using the intel card, I read up a bit and figured this would be due to an issue with the switchable graphics.
I did the bios and drivers updates and changed switchable graphics to fixed mode, this seemed to do the trick and my laptop ran like it should be for a few days. This morning I start watching some of my shows and then my screen freezes and it starts making a bunch of noise (similar to what it was doing pre-factory reset). Oh dear, I turn it off, and leave it off for a bit figuring maybe it had overheated. I turn it on again, now device manager wont show the radeon card and AMD catalyst produces a warning message saying that there is no AMD driver compatible with the CCC (well it was just fine yesterday, no updates, program installations or anything run since then)
I'm now wondering whether there may just be a hardware issue and that it's time to pack in my laptop or if this could still be a driver issue.@Piids
Download and install the most current AMD graphics softpaq.
You can get it from the download section of your notebook's web support portal.
Do not install the Intel graphics driver softpaq seperately. Doing that will remove the switchable graphics feature.

Want to add Video and Graphic Card to my computer system
I Notice that one of the users' in the Apple discussion Board is Listed, (AndyO) he has help me many times in the Past and was succesful in my problrm solution, would he might be able to help me with this?
I had Purchased the Game Spore Creature Creator the Starter Kit which is just the Creature creator game and not the actual game itself. I wasn't able to install the the game on my computer because I don't have the right or not at all Video and Graphic Card install on my computer. I had Contacted the Company "EA" that puts out the Game Spore, this is what they said what the game requirements are: The minimum system requirements for Spore and Spore the Galactic Edition for Mac are as follows:
* Mac OS X 10.5.3 Leopard or higher
* Intel Core Duo Processor
* 1024 MB RAM
* At least 345 MB of hard drive space for installation, plus additional space for created creatures. (260 MB for the Trial Edition)
* Video Card - ATI X1600 or NVidia 7300 GT with 128 MB of Video RAM, or Intel Integrated GMA X3100
This game will not run on PowerPC (G3/G4/G5) based Mac systems (PowerMac).
For computers using built-in graphics chipsets, the game requires at least: an Intel Integrated Chipset GMA X3100 or Dual 2.0GHz CPUs, or 1.7GHz Core 2 Duo, or equivalent
Supported Video Cards
ATI Radeon(TM) series
* X1600, X1900, HD 2400, HD 2600
NVIDIA GeForce series
* 7300, 7600, 8600, 8800
Intel(R) Extreme Graphics
* GMA X3100
and that I need to upgrade my system. Basically I need; ATI Radeon 1600 or NVIDIA Geforce 7300 and a INTEL Extreme Graphic Video Card-GMA X3100, in order to be able to install and play this game. Since I already have this game, I would like to be able to upgrade my computer system which brings me to ask; does somone know or refer me to a web site that has and sells these Video and Graphic Card and supports for the Mini Mac?
Plus they say that I need a 1020 of MB of Ram, I Have already found that 1024 MB of Ram but I just need those Video and Graphic Cards for my computer system. I am adding my computer system Profile to my discussion board to show you what I have on my system, would you be able to tell me if I would be able to add these Video and Graphic card and the memory or Ram 1024 to my computer system?
Note: Here is a web site that I am looking at to add the 1024 MB of Ram to my computer system:

Can someone Please help me with any suggestions or otherwisde I will have to go to a Apple store and ask for help there.
Thank You,
Trisha Foster
<Edited by Moderator>Hi Trisha,
The only modern Mac's with video cards are the Mac Pro and Xserve (server) systems. They both are priced quite a bit higher than any Mac Mini.
Some systems, like the Mac Book Pro laptop can be ordered with different graphics cards, but that has be done when the system is built, as it is not replaceable once the system is built. To find out which systems, go to store.apple.com. For each system that you select, you can see if there's an option for a better video card.

Problem with MSI GTX 960 GAMAING 4G graphics card - Please help
So I just bought an MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G graphics card. My problem is that it seems to randomly decide when it wants to run fine at 1215 MHz, and when it wants to downclock to around 135 MHz. Today for example, I was playing Witcher 3: Game was running fine (~55 FPS) for a few hours because the card was performing at maximum. Then, out of nowehere, I dropped to about 4 FPS. I checked Afterburner, and the core clock went down to 135 MHz, while I was still in game. The card is not overheating during gaming. I have the fans set to 35% speed at all times and the GPU never got hotter than about 50c.
I have the latest nVidia drivers installed. I even tried an earlier set of nVidia drivers and the same things happened. Also yes, it is firmly seated in the PCI-E slot and yes, the power cable is firmly plugged in.
PC Specs:
Intel Core i5 Devils Canyon
Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI mobo
GSkill Sniper 16GB RAM
MSI GTX 960 GAMING 4G graphics card
Antec EDGE 550w PSU
I understand these newer graphics cards have power saving settings built in, but I have my nVidia control panel settings to "Prefer maximum performance" and it doesn't seem to help. It seems my card is putting itself into power saver mode at will. I suppose my PSU could be the culprit even though the recommended PSU is only 400w, and I have 550w. Any ideas?So it turns out I wasn't running the latest BIOS for my motherboard. I updated my BIOS and cleared CMOS. Everything was running fine for a couple hours. I was playing Witcher 3 at full clock and memory speed. GPU temp was hovering around 62 deg c at 60 FPS. Then after a couple hours, the game crashed. Rebooted my computer, and now I am back to the same issue where the card won't run at full speed in a 3D application. Even ran the Valley benchmark tool again and the card didn't increase speed to compensate.
Do I have a defective card? If so I will get it replaced from Newegg.
Also I don't know if I am running the latest vbios. GPU-Z says I have 84.06.14.00.F3
If there is a newer vbios, I can try to update and see if that does anything. I will try anything before returning this to Newegg. My old video card bit the dust and artifacts everywhere, so I don't have a temp replacement. -
Satellite A100-207: Is it possible to upgrade graphic card for gaming
Hi
I am looking to buy the Toshiba A100-207 laptop and it comes with 128MB of shared graphics.
I would like to play games and I was wondering if I could upgrade the graphics (such as a nvidia card that I could buy and put in) or are the graphics fixed?
I would just like to know if I am able to upgrade?
ThankyouHi
In my opinion the graphic card and/or the CPU is not soldered on the new notebook generation. The parts should be simply plugged on the board.
But this does not change the upgrade situation.
Possibly you will be able to remove the graphic card but Im sure you will get compatibility problems with other hardware.
The stronger graphic card produces more warmness and the temperature would increases automatically to a higher level. This would lead to the overheating issue and the notebook would either shut down or not starts.
The desktop PC technology is simply different as on the notebooks. You can also not compare the different graphic cards. Notebook manufactures uses only the graphic card chips which dont supports an own cooling module.
Simply said its not possible to upgrade the graphic card. -
Start Up & Sleep Problem, considering graphics card upgrade, Leopard?
Hi All,
I've searched at length for this problem, and as a user rather than a tech have suspicions, rather than certainty.
Have been suffering with my Mac Pro going intermittently to shutdown rather than sleep for a while, I've been living with that. But a new problem has appeared just in the last day or so, I don't necessarily think they are connected, but what do I know?
The new problem is it seems for want of a better term my Pro stalls on start up, it took an hour before it started this morning, its really quite peculiar.
I hit the start button, initial whirring, then stop, the machine appears to be off, but after 10-20secs, it starts again, then immediately stops, and repeat, and repeat. Strangely though, eventually it starts to get further into boot up each time, maybe it gets to the apple logo, and shutdowns, and repeats, and repeats, then OS X loading screen, shutdown, wait 10secs restarts on its own, eventually it gets to the deskstop and shuts down, before running eventually. It started doing this yesterday, thought it might be because I've moved it a couple of times, connecting an ethernet cable, (awkward having the socket on the back!). So I checked everything firmly seated inside, and very carefully hoovered out the dust (although that wasn't bad).
Reset SMC, reset energy saver settings, ran the tech tool for the Apple Care disk, removed all my crucial.com extra ram, and inserted Apple's original heat sunked RAM, no change.
Anyway its running now and as you can imagine if this going to get worse or a hardware component is on its last legs I'm busy burning dvds of important files, its used mainly for video editing, but I reckon 15 dvds ought to get the important business backed up! As I'm going to book it into Apple as its under an Apple Care policy.
This has got me thinking, is it time to get some upgrades at the same time. No matter how much RAM I have installed, and it doesn't appear to use even half of whats onboard, I've struggled with Motion very slow, often crashing, especially when using HD or Pro Res HD video, so much so that I've stuck to Livetype, which is a shame as its limited, and limiting. I notice Livetype has been dropped FCS. If its not the RAM, is it the graphics card? I was thinking of upgrading Ati HD 3870, or better, but I'm unclear if these are only compatible with Leopard 10.5.x, hence considering upgrading to Leopard. And thought I'd get Apple to do the work at the same time.
As to the start up problem, if it were a vehicle I'd be thinking it was damp electrics, and be spraying WD40 to dry it out, I'm not of course, but I'm thinking power supply, or a temperature issue, but as its working when running 4 hours and working nicely now (so long as I don't leave to 'sleep') I can't see it being an overheating issue.
Anyway sorry to go on but thoughts/advice please?
Its business critical machine, as a videographer although I bought this MacBook Pro, from which I'm typing, for just this scenario which I'll use at a pinch.
Message was edited by: Northern MunkeeYou may want to just get one utility for now.
At this point, do you need a new graphic card? then you need to upgrade to Leopard. If your software and system won't be a problem regardless of compatibility great, but make sure. Otherwise, Snow Leopard will likely require lots more upgrades and updates.
But maybe doing an upgrade to Leopard and then test the waters with Leopard and Snow L. makes better sense.
Only the "Early, Early" 2006-7 1st Gen Mac Pros can run 10.4.11 (or at least install and officially supported).
The product pages have misleading information but you do need 10.5.7 for the 4870 which is your best graphics upgrade choice. The 3870 came out a year ago and requires 10.5.3+. -
G5 graphics card error: ATI Radeon 9800 pro
Hi there,
The display on my mac has all of sudden gone haywire, there's bars across the entire screen that keep on changing colours/flickering etc, and when I try to drag open windows they become blocks of noisey colour.
So far i've tried resetting PRAM/NVRAM, ran the hardware test which picks up an error on the VRAM which is: 2ATI/1/4:113-A1440; ;16 (I think, it's very difficuilt to read properly), also pulled the graphics card out, given it a bit of a dust etc and put it back in to no avail. I've also tried plugging in another monitor which had the same problem.
I'm assuming my graphics card's fried, but I wanted to check on here to see if anyone had any other ideas. I'm slightly wary about splashing out on a new card when i'm not completely sure it's the card that's the problem, it could be the logic board for all I know. Also not too keen in taking it to the apple shop as it'll be away for up to two weeks, and I really need a working machine just now.
My specs are G5 single 1.8ghz, 512 ram, ATI Radeon 9800 pro card (not the special edition)
Apologies for the long message, and for any spelling mistakes as I can barely see what i'm typing, any advice most appreciated.I would suggest first blowing compressed air all around the inside including logic board and video card (if you are adept at removing the card and reinstalling the better, careful not braking the AGP clip at the end of the slot that latches into the end of the card). Also keep the can upright at all times. This should help dislodge dust that build up over time and may cause overheating and unusual operation.
Then run Apple Hardware Test disc that came with your computer and run the extended test. It should at least help give you an idea if it's the logic board and/or video card. It's not 100% failsafe, but worth a shot.
