Dv5t-1000 thermal pads

My dv5t-1000 seems to be running hotter than normal. It's 5 years old now and I figure it would be reasonable to overhaul the cooling system. The fan doesn't seem to be blowing much air anymore, so i"m going to replace it, as well as clean out as much dust as possible (shouldn't be hard since I will need to take the laptop completely apart). I'm also going to replace the thermal compund and thermal pads. The problem is, I don't know how thick the pads need to be and I can't find this information anywhere online. I really only want to have to pull everything apart once if I can help it. Can anybody tell me how thick the new pads I buy need to be?
TLDR: How thick are the thermal pads in the dv5t-1000?

I got a set of K5-pro and K4-pro thermal pastes from ebay ( www.ebay.com/itm/261419323645 ). K5-PRO is a thermal paste for themal pad replacement. I use it in all cases instead of thermal pads and I don't have to care about thickness any more. Copper has better thermal conductivity but it is impossible to make it fit on the GPU and under the heatsink perfectly and it is electrically conductive so still K5-PRO is much better I think. K4-PRO is the best thermal paste for reasonable cost that I have used so far. You only need one small drop on the CPU.
there is a video about these products on youtube here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9v5MDivZfc
K5-Pro is also avaliable on Amazon... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00K04D3UK

  • E220s freezing without symptoms after renewing fan and thermal pad

    Hello fellow Lenovians,
I recently renewed a rattling fan in my E220s. Since then I get permanent freezes every time, starting from ca. 5 to 40 minutes on. I checked with Sandra, and to my understanding no temperature sensor shows anything abnormal.
Since the thermal pad on the chip to the left from the CPU (northbridge?) seemed worn, I renewed it also with a 1 mm 7W pad. After dismantling again it does seem not the whole (but no less than 80%) of the chip's surface is hard pressed to the pad. I understand it's all the screws that keep the structure tight, but I have no more ideas on how it can be wrongly fit - or improved. Please note I have dismantled the laptop including the fan assembly several times before, without any noticeable issues. Yes I do use thermal grease/spread for the CPU.
    Many thanks in advance,

    bump.

  • Dv5t-1000 CTO Sound sputters and OS slows down after a few hours

    I am running Vista 32bit SP1 on a DV5T-1000 CTO machine, 4gb ram 2.0ghz c2d
I've noticed that after a few hours of use, usually after I leave the machine on alone and coming back to it, the sound completely degrades and the OS response completely slows down to a crawl. It is especially prominent if I go to something like youtube and watch a video. the whole thing sputters and stutters and sounds horrible and the os slows to a crawl.
however, if I pause the video, until it's fully loaded, THEN play it, all is well, and my OS goes back to full speed...
but the longer I leave my PC on the WORSE it gets. if I leave it overnight, and come back in the morning, the result is horrible. I have an audio alert to notify me if I have email. normally it just does a quick 'beeep-booop, taking about a quarter of a second' as it flashes the message in the corner. If i leave the machine on over night, the next morning the message will go 'b-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-p-p-p-p-p-p b-b-b-b-o-o-o-o-o-o-p-p-p-p-' and takes about 5 seconds to complete the notification!
At this point, if I try to restart the computer, or shut it down from the start menu, it does nothing. I go to start select restart, nothing. I go to start, select shutdown, nothing. I have to physically hold down the power button and kill the computer!
I've updated to all the latest drivers for all my components straight of the h-p site. I even tried upgrading my nvidia drivers to the latest from nvidia.com. that didn't work so I reverted back to the h-p ones (from LAST YEAR by the way, can we get an UPDATE!)
so please, tell me WHAT GIVES! In addition to using my computer for daily activities, I also produce music on it. And if I use my pc for more than 2 hours, and I want to work on music, I have to reboot or suffer as my computer completely locks up.
PS. this thing says I cant make a word using the letters h and p... is this a JOKE?!?!?!?!?!?!

sorry about my tone, I don't realize how I sound when I'm typing, though I do think it's ridiculous that a forum about h-p doesn't allow you SAY h-p
anyway, I'm still at a loss for what to do, and it just occured to me that this may not be the place to get official help. are there h-p people here? or should I be contacting support? I have a feeling all they're going to tell me is to update the drivers...

  • HP Pavilion dv5t-1000 HDMI TV display error.

My laptop  HP Pavillion dv5t-1000 with Windows vista 64 bit will not display from laptop to TV with HDMI wire anymore. It makes a clicking noise (error noise) when I attempt to connect it to TV with HDMI wire.  I was watching a football game on the computer and connected it to the TV with HDMI wire and it was working well.  I left for a while and came back and battery was dead on laptop so display stopped.  I plugged in computer and now can not get computer to display back on TV again.  I downloaded driver
     NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS/9600M GT Video/Graphics Driver
    2008-11-14 , Version:7.15.11.7904 D, 160.11M
and it still does not work.  Please help me solve this issue.
    Thank You

Install this driver direct from NVIDIA.
     http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-258.96-whql-driver.html
Save it to the desk top and install it from there, do not install it from a temporary folder.
Install it over top of your present one, if it does not install there is a procedure to uninstall the old one first.
The other thing to do is to choose a Windows restore point when the HDMI connection was working.

  • Can I use hard drive from bestbuy for my Pavilion dv5t-1000?

Hard drive is failing on my Pavilion dv5t-1000.  Do I have to use an hp replacement hard disk because of a partition that hp adds to their hard disks for recovery?  Can I use my HP Recovery Disks and recovery backups on a store-bought hard drive?  No longer under warranty.
    This question was solved.

    Hi:
You should be able to do that with no problem.
Just make sure the disk drive you purchase is the same specification (SATA II, 2.5") and size in GB (or larger size) then the original one.

  • Pavilion dv5t-1000 Hard Drive question

    Hello.
This is probably a simple question but I'd like to know how many internal hard drives does my HP Pavilion dv5t-1000 support: one or two?  The specs I found online for my machine suggested that it can support two drives but I don't immediately see where the second drive would be housed if it does.
I don't have much experience with taking apart laptops but I was able to upgrade my RAM just fine.  And when I took the HD plate off and lifted up the hard drive housed inside, all I could see was the wireless card underneath and seemingly no room for a second drive.
So, does my dv5t-1000 laptop only support one hard drive?  And if it should happen to support two drives, where exactly would the second be housed?  I wasn't adventurous enough to take apart my laptop to find out so any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
I look forward to your helpful responses.
    Thank you,
    winebaron

    Hi,
The dv5 series really only supports 1 HDD although there are conversion kits available that will allow you to install a second drive in the optical drive bay - an example of this sort of kit is Here.

  • G62 thermal pad replacement

    Hi,
I'm fixing a friends laptop with overheating issues. I've looked over the disassemble and find nothing I can't do (alot I shouldn't have to, nice design there HP).
My only question is whats the size and thickness of the thermal pad needed for the GPU? I'd hate to have to trial and error it.
    Thanks

    Wow... support.

  • Thermal pads for MSI GX640

    Hello,
My brother has the MSI GX640 notebook. It's already a few years old and it's overheating easily.
I wanted to replace the thermal paste and thermal pads.
    Thus, my question.
Does anybody know how thick the thermal pads in this model should be?
    Cheers!

you may check with MSI directly but if you use thermal grease, a drop that could cover the core is enough.

The only comment I would make about this, and take it as criticism to better your tutorial next time, is to use a more precise measuring tool. Small metal rulers with very precise measurements can be had for $1 at hardware stores, and they would be invaluable in most of the pictures compared to the broken school ruler.
Again, just some constructive criticism. Otherwise this is VERY informative and well written.
I take it you didn't have any issues swapping out the 680M for the 780M then?
Yes its true, sry about the broken school ruler, i was a little bit lazy to buy a better one, i think main thing is the information and not the optic here  but you are completely right
I didnt changed to 780M because i found some posts in different forums where people wrote that 780M become hotter as 680M and my 680m getting 80 - 85°C in games like BF4 (without OC), by the way what are your max temps in graphic intensive games? ( I have GT70 0ne, same model like you)

  • Re: Replace thermal pad GT70 2 PC

Thermal pads for VRAM are 1.0mm, but other pads for electric components are 1.25mm. Don't use too hard thermal pads or they will likely leverage some part of the thermal pipe and make it untouched from some electric components then cause the components...

What's your BIOS & EC versions?
Where did you get those drivers?
Did you update the video BIOS?
Check the GT70 2PC product webpage and update all above.

  • DV9000: Thermal pad or copper shim?

Hi!  I recently bought a DV9000 from my local electronics recycler, and it, of course, has the notorious GPU issue.  I have ordered a refurbished motherboard, but was wondering what the consensus is about whether a thermal pad or copper shim is the way to go to dissapate the GPU heat on the new board.  I'm sure HP doesn't have an official stance on this, but I would like to hear from anyone what their choice is, and why.  Thanks!

I usued to place copper shim until I found K5-PRO viscus thermal paste. Copper has great thermal conductivity but it is electrically conductive and can cause damage and also if it is slightly thiner or thicker it won't fit perfectly. K5-PRO is a very gummy thermal paste designed for thermal pad replacement. Try it and you will see that it is the perfect solution for all cases when you need to replace a thermal pad.
You can see a video about it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9v5MDivZfc
and you can find it on ebay here http://www.ebay.com/itm/261419323645
It is also avaliable on Amazon...

  • Thermal pad under LQFP48 package

    Hello,
I need a thermal pad in a footprint of a LQFP 48 package - the pad should have some vias to the bottom side.
I had no issue to implement the LQFP48 package with the part wizard - but havebn't been able to use "Pins" and "Copper area" to implement a decent thermal pad into the footprint which should be then pin "49" of the package.
How can this be done with Ultiboard.
I would like to point out, that I would like to have this pad in the _footprint_ !

    Hi tbet,
Generally thermal pads are added using a the rectangular SMD pin (or custom pad shape if you require a cutout). an example using the custom pad shape already in the database is the QFN40P600X600X80-49N.
This is easiest to do after clicking the "finish" button in the part wizard, while still in footprint edit mode.
An alternative to this is to edit the footprint after being saved using the database manager (tools > database > database manager) and edit the existing footprint.
From here you can use the pin placement dialog (place > pins) to select your desired shape from the SMD Pin dropdown.
If you wish to use a custom pad shape, it needs to be created before the land pattern, which is done via the database manager.
From the database manager click the "Create New Part" button (Ctrl-N) and select "Custom pad shape", You will be brought to the custom pad shape editor where you can create the pad(usually done with a Polygon). Ensure you save the pad to the database when finished.
The pad is then placed from the pins dropdown as noted above by selecting the Custom shape and locating your saved pad in the database.

    Jason

  • 12"PB 1.5ghz...Thermal Pad or Paste??????

    Hello,
Can any of you fine folks tell me what exactly is used on a last gen 12" 1.5ghz Powerbook? Thermal Pad of Thermal Paste?
I am putting a few dollars into my PB (7200 rpm HD, max ram and a replacement glossy screen from Techrestore) and was wondering if it was worth using AS5 (Arctic Silver5) to keep the heat down a bit.
    Thanks Bunches

As far as I'm aware G4 processors always use thermal pads specifically shaped for the chip.

  • Z60t processor thermal pad needs replacing

    hello,
one of the paraffin thermal pads (not the grease) that attaches to the heat pipe/sink has come off. i had the fan out to clean the fan grills yesterday and noticed it was loose. i tried to reseat it, but it doesn't seem to have worked.
this is for the processor in the centre of the machine, not the cpu near the left hand side.
does anyone know what that pad is and were to get replacement? i can find thermal tape, but not anyone who sells this pad. is is sold by lenovo? this machine is 3 years old and out of warranty.
    desperate,
    tim

    Good luck.
