DV6-6000 LF372AV - Fails BIOS recovery

I have a DV6-6000 Prod #LF372AV where the BIOS became corrupted.  Didn't attempt update, just failed out of the blue.
First symptom is turn on PC, hear fan come on then immediately reboots.  Stuck in this cycle of rebooting forever.  With no error codes (such as not even Caps Lock LED blink) I guessed corrupted BIOS.
I tried the Windows+B, but I've wiped this harddrive previously and the BIOS recovery partion was gone.
So, I downloaded and ran the HP UEFI Support Environment Softpaq as directed here:
     http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02693833.
This partially worked.  With a Recovery BIOS loaded on the the USB flash drive, I can hold Windows+B at power up and BIOS loads off the USB key.  However, it is NOT replacing the corrupted BIOS on the laptop.
According to the instructions, once the temporary BIOS is installed, a reboot should automatically occur.  Instead, NOW it stays on (no more spontaneous reboot cycle) and I get a 2 blink error code out of the Caps Lock LED.  It seems that the temporary BIOS loads into BIOS memory, but the stored BIOS itself cannot be overwritten.  As I stated earlier, if I reboot, I'm back to the original condition.
So, it appears that the BIOS storage is bad. ???
Even if that is the case, I don't understand why boot into BIOS stops at the error indicating BIOS is corrupted.  Obviously the mem copy of BIOS run off the USB flash drive is "more functioning" than the stored BIOS, but I still can't get far enough to get to the BIOS editor or any BIOS update utility.
I tried a second method.  I downloaded the latest BIOS for this model laptop from HP support.  Then I extracted it and ran the updater.  It extracted an even newer version of the BIOS recovery tool onto my flash drive.  This had the exact same results as the UEFI Support Environment version of BIOS.  Therefore, two different versions of BIOS have failed to repair the corrupted BIOS and have failed to get me past the caps lock LED blinking twice.
Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi
Workaround:
There are few steps that has worked for few but not always..
Restart and tap F2.  F2  will show an option “BIOS Management” . Select BIOS Management and then select “Roll Over to the previous BIOS”
BIOS Management option will not be available if the system do not have HP_Tools partition installed or if it is deleted.
Fix if BIOS Management is not available
i)                    Press and Hold the Windows Key and B key at the same time when the system is turned off or follow the steps from this link: Recovering the BIOS using key press combination
ii)                 Shutdown the Notebook. Remove the Hard Drive and then turn the computer ON and tap F10 to load BIOS. If it loads BIOS then it should rollback to previous BIOS or it might show a black screen. Just leave the system ON for about 2-3 mins and turn it on with the hard drive and check.
Let us know how it goes!

  • Dv6-2000sl USB BIOS recovery

    Hi guys, i'm kri.
i have a HP Pavillon dv6-2000sl that present double led blink(capslock & blocnum) I saw that rapresent bios curroption error.
The uefi partition on harddisk called HP_TOOL was empty (contains only SystemDiag Folder).
I'll want to create an USB UEFI bios recovery while i saw on the hp forum, but is inefficent.
The files that i find in BIOS package (support/dv6-2000/driver/ecc) wasn't the same file that the guide use to restore BIOS via USB.   The guide isn't specific for this pc and the other online guide(not official) used or CAB.rom package o same files colled bios.wph or other exstensions.
i could know that files copyng on usb after formatting(hp format tool?) (uefi support assistant??) and that executable put it in to recived the feedback in this page : http://h10010.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02723600&lc=it&cc=it&dlc=it     (HP BIOS UPDATE)
Thanks a lot, im in panic.

    Hi @kridrina
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
I understand that you are getting a double LED flash pattern on startup, meaning a BIOS problem. I am happy to help.
Had you deleted the contents of HP_Tools at some point in the past?
It sounds like you went straight to trying to make a usb flash device to repair/reinstall the BIOS. Have you tried a basic BIOS restore from the saved image? Mainly using the Windows+B combination as described in this page.

  • Hard drive failure on Pavilion dv6-6000 laptop (LT069AV)

I posted this as a reply on another thread (xxx).   Thought I might get a quicker response starting a new question.
Persistent BSODs and disk errors culminated in a "disk not found" error yesterday on my dv6-6000 laptop PC.  Windows 7 Home, Intel i5 processor, 6GB RAM.  I like the PC overall - nice screen and usually great performance.  I look forward to getting it back online as it serves as my work as well as personal computer.
So, I need to replace my hard drive and reinstall the OS with a an HP recovery disc that I have yet to purchase (I can't find a recovery disk I produced myself after several moves), and then restore using my cloud backup solution.
The HP part number for the SATA hard drive is 621046-001 (this is a 640 GB volume).  I noticed that a replacement for this drive is available at CPU medics for about $90.  Would I be foolish to order a replacement, having just experienced a drive failure with this part?  Should I look to other manufacturers and perhaps go with a 750 GB volume?  Also, do I need to replace with a 7200 rpm drive?  Is there any disadvantage if I went with a 5400 rpm HDD?
    Any suggestions?
    majoha

You have options when installing Windows 7 to create partitions, you could just select the complete space & install as one partion then once installed use windows disc partition manager to adjust it to you requirements.
Windows 7 can be loaded to a memory stick & the link provided includes a tool to make the bootable memory stick.
Plenty of step by step guides on installing windows can be found on google, it is quite easy but first time is always going be slower due to learning curve, if you like super simple then hp recovery discs could be worth the money dor you.
Link below is guide on installing Windows 7, useful as a rough guide on what involved.

  • Satelite P300 does not boot after failed Bios update

    Hi everyone,
I have tried to update the bios of a P300 using this :
    18/03/10
    BIOS Update
    Toshiba Windows 7 - 32 Bit 4.20-WIN32 World Wide
Which I downloaded from here: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=UK after entering my laptops specifications.
The flash process hanged during the update and the laptop became unbootable, blank screen when powering on and nothing else...
I tried using the Phoenix Emergency Crisis application, created a floppy disk with the Bios image file that I have earlier downloaded but managed nothing.
The USB floppy driver access the floppy when entering the recovery mode, I hear some beeps that indicate that a process takes places, but when everything stops and reboot...the problem remains.
-Has anyone got a clue what to do next?
-Is the warranty void after a bios update attempt?
    Thank you for yor time.

    Hi buddy,
You should check the forum content or with other words, use the forum search firstly before you ask something. Failed BIOS update is not unusual and can happen always. The forum contains already a lot threads about this and the only solution is contacting an ASP. The guys have professional tools to recover it.

[Athlon64] Failed Bios update with both Live Update and Dos version = badchecksum shutdown

Sometimes bios recovery is a long shot .
But the award bios v.6 is supposed to be able to do it if the bootblock is still intact.
Best way seems to be to strip it down to minimal configuration , disconnect all drives except floppy , one ram module , perhaps without video card also .

So for everyone with same model and same problem: It turns out this bios really don't boot-block. So failed bios = paperweight brick without recovery options.
But this is how I solved mine. Bought a SPI programmer, ic test clip (soic8) , some wires and made adapter to connect clip ind programmer. Had some problems , and had also to modify downloaded bios since I didnt have good backup but after little playing it fired right up. If you have good backed up rom, flashing should be easier. This is solution for those with more technical skills , but much easier than soldering the chip.

  • TS140 BIOS recovery

After failed BIOS upgrade I tried to follow the "Recovering from a BIOS update failure" chapter from TS140 Hardware Maintenance Manual:
downloaded bios_ts140-240-440-540_fbkt99a_dos.zip and unpacked the files onto a FAT32 formatted USB flash drive (non bootable)
    plugged the drive in
moved the maintenance jumper to the 2-3 position
    plugged in the power cord
On power up the server accesses the flash drive (its LED lights up shortly) then produces 2 short beeps. There is no video output.
    What am I missing?
the disk needs to be formatted in a certain way? or BIOS image file needs to have a certain name? I just tried with the original IMAGEFB.ROM in the root folder of the disk. Does the recovery procedure expect any keys pressed on the keyboard?

What you've done is exactly what should happen. There will be no output from the video. Once you hear the the two beeps, continue to wait several minutes. The system is performing the recovery. It will reboot on its own after the recovery is complete.

  • 875P Neo FIS2R BIOS RECOVERY

Has anyone tried (I should say needed to try) the BIOS recovery feature for this board?
I've probably flashed my motherboard 10-15 times this week trying different settings and combos.  I got my new Kingston HyperX 3500 1GB Dual DDR434 kit and started re-tweaking my machine.  Finally after using 1.74 for two days, it just would fail to boot.  Powers up, but no POST.  Resetting CMOS, and all other tricks failed.  I even tried putting back in my Samsung CAS-3 memory to see if it would boot up.  No go.
I tried the BIOS recovery procedure as follows.  Rename your bios to AMIBOOT.ROM and put on a disk.  Hold CTRL-HOME to force the flash.  Well I tried this about 20 times, using different floppies, drives, and cables until I was ready to throw the board in the recycle bin.
I decided that I would give it one last try about 2am this morning.  I tried using the 1.74 BIOS as the recovery ROM, instead of the BIOS I wanted to replace it with.  Worked like a charm.  I don't know if the bootblock of the BIOS is different or what, but maybe it will help others unfortunate enough to suffer the same tragedy and kill their 875P Neo.
I am back up and running with v1.5 which seems most stable to me versus the other revs and I've tried them all three times or more (1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.32b, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6, 1.74b).  And although I am not able to eek out any more mhz from the box, I can run tighter timings and the system gaining about 400 points in 3dMark2001.  And it DEFINITELY seems more stable than ever.  But I'm sure it's just my imagination  :P

Yeah ive been considering going back to 1.5 to get rid of the crappy performance option (unstable overclock on the AGP/PCI and graphics card)
Does 1.5 enable PAT? ...i never managed to test this myself (Its the only option i need from performance modes)
I havent had the pleasure of the recovery mode yet (touch wood) ...and good job on making it back!!  :D

  • Failed bios flashing...

    Hi,
I did a bios flashin yesterday and... it failed.
The purpose for flashing a bios update was that I have problems with a new hard disk that is 60 Mb, and I though my old bios was not handling that size correctly.
I had taken advice from the MSI site (bios flashing procedure) and from this forum and also from a french site. I followed precisely every step of the procedure, including the MSI bios recovery procedure, but I now have a dead PC...
I saved the old bios file on a bootable diskette, and I also have the new bios file on a diskette (although I did not make the flashing from the diskette as recommended in this forum. I discovered the Live Update only after my flashing failed... The writing of the bios file went OK, but the screen froze right after the writing. When I rebooted for the Bios recovery procedure, the PC was already dead...
My mother board is MS 6154VA, the bios file is w6154VMS.240, the choipset is 692-596-W977 // VIA.
Can someone give me advice on what I can do next ? Can I have the bios chip flashed at a maintenance workshop ? Can I find and buy a bios chip ? Or do I have to buy a new mother board ?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Christophe

Alright now, I'm back on my machine.
I had my bios chip flashed at an elctronics components shop, with the exact same file I had downloaded from MSI.
Let me give the details of the shop, as I think it is the only one in Paris doing that :
    ECE
    66, rue de Montreuil
    75011 PARIS
    Tel : 01 43 72 30 64.
They do that Tuesday thru Saturday, and the cost is really modest. You just have to bring your chip and your file (not .exe, not .zip).
What I still don't understand is why the flashing did not work at home, and why the bios recovery procedure from a diskette did not work.
    Thanks for your help.
    Chris   :P  :P  :P
    Thanks for your help.

  • Bios Recovery for Pavilion ZE-5155

I used the HP web-based update for updating the bios on my Pavilion ZE-5155 from KD.M1.60 to the suggested KE.M1.45 and the laptop is completely dead now.  First  I made the ROMPaq for HP Notebook System BIOS – DOS Bootable Diskette KE.M1.45, and it gave the loud error beep and RED BOX error message and would not flash the Bios.  Unfortunately, when I used the web-based utility to do updates for the ZE-5155, (KE.M1.45), I  got an error message showing an incompatability, (forgot the message).  However it let me flash the bios anyway.  Block after Block was flashed until it completed.  The moment the flash completed (hp-web-flash windows running) windows abruptly terminated to a black screen.  Now all I get is blue lights whien I power on, nothing on the screen.  I made a boot-block jumper for the parallel port like in the repair manual (bph08402.pdf (pin 2-15, 3-13, 4-11, 5-12, 6-10)).  I have a bootable floppy disk in the drive, but no floppy light or action.
Is there anything else or procedure to get to a crisis recovery mode that will access the floppy to reflash the Bios.  I tried the Fn-B at power-up, reset button on bottom of case, no help.  If I can get to crisis recovery, I found several other older ROMPaq disk images I could make to reflash the ze5155 bios.

Thanks Mumbdog.  I tried all kinds of combinations of fn+B, windows+B, with & with out the boot-block jumper at power-on.  The floppy disk light never comes on to read the floppy disk.  Any other ideas?  It's not likely I'll be replacing the motherboard to get a new Bios chip on a laptop this old.  But it was working fine before the failed Bios update. (I spent about a day doing all the Microsoft updates -sob sob sob- just before)

  • Bios recovery for HP dv5-1235dx/Vista (64-bit) crashed during update

My HP Pavillion dv5-1235dx which ran windows vista (64-bit) crashed while updating bios (after my old bios was deleted).  I have tried the start+b+power trick to recover but that option did not work.  HP Support suggests to create a usb key to install bios, however I have repeatedly failed in recovering/installing bios because the instructions are very limited. They mention a "create a usb key" option that I have yet to find that would make the key.  After using the HP UEFI BIOS Update SoftPAQ and extracting files from the bios .exe file, I found the following:
1 folder (sp45138) with contents below
    3602F21.fd
    3603F21.fd
    ding (wave sound)
    InsydeFlash (application)
    InsydeFlash (text document)
    iscflash.dll
    iscflash.sys
    iscflashx64.sys

So, my questions are as follows:
Where is the mystery "create a usb key" button?
What files should I have installed on my usb drive?
Does anything have to be renamed or formatted?
    Thanks for any help given!

Hello Ceelion21.  I understand you're trying to recover your computer from a failed BIOS flash.
I see this question get asked a lot so I have made sure to bookmark the instructions which I found on another website.  Here is a link.
You should be able to download the BIOS file from HP Support.  I believe you'll need to use an application such as 7-Zip to extract the BIOS file and locate the *.FD file.
If this doesn't work you'll likely need to have the notebook repaired.  If you'd like to inquire about a repair through HP Support and are in the US/Canada you can give them a call at 1-800-474-6836.  If you're in another part of the world you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.
Let me know the result of the BIOS recovery.  I hope you have an excellent night!

  • BIOS recovery process for HP systems with AMI BIOS?

    Hi,
I'm trying to fix an HP a6718uk model PC which has an M2N78-LA motherboard and (I think) and AMI BIOS.  A BIOS update that came through HP Update has failed, and the machine will not boot.
As it's out of warranty the HP Repair Centre want £200.00 to fix it, even though a simple BIOS recovery process should be sufficient - does anyone know the BIOS recovery process for these systems?   Everything I've read (not specific to these boards) says you should be able to put a BIOS update (called AMIBOOT.ROM) on either a floppy, CD, or USB memory stick, and boot holding down Ctrl-Home and it will perform the recovery, but I've not been able to get this to work successfully.  HP don't supply a standalone update so I've extracted the file from the BIOS update SP.exe on the HP support site.
Any help would be most appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Andrew
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Brilliant idea - I tried AMIBOOT.BIN and that didn't work, but then took the Hex Editor to the file - it's HPBIOS.ROM
Renamed the file to HPBIOS.ROM and all now works.
To recap for anyone reading the thread, this was from an HP machine with a corrupt AMI BIOS, to get it back, extract the ROM file from the SP.exe file from the HP website, rename it from VLE5.22 (or whatever the file is that ends in a numeric) to HPBIOS.ROM and copy onto a floppy diskette.   Put the floppy in the internal diskette drive (in my case a Sony OEM drive attached using a grey floppy ribbon cable) and boot the machine.  You may need to hold down Ctrl-Home, but not 100% sure.   After a long while the machine will give 4 or 5 beeps, and reset itself.  Once it's done that it will boot normally.
Thanks for your help David - much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Andrew
