DV6-7010US Caps lock flash, no POST

System was not used for several months. When we tried to use it, the system was extremely unstable and crashed several times with Windows blue screen errors, randomly didn't detect the hard drive, etc. Then it just stopped booting at all, and instead has the orange WiFi light with the caps lock LED flashing once every second (or so) indefinitely. LED error codes list says this is "CPU not functional." Since then, both the motherboard and CPU have been replaced, but the system still gives the same LED error code.
Motherboard was ordered straight from HP Parts surfer, CPU from a 3rd party company with guarantee that item is tested as fully functional. Reports from this forum and others on this system and motherboard replacements are not overly positive. I'm tired of dumping money into this laptop and it not working. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Remove the hard drive and boot up. If you can get to the BIOS, the hard drive is faulty. It's highly unlikely that the new board and the cpu will cause exactly the same error. It means that some other component from the system must be faulty.

  • HP Pavilion DV6 blank screen caps lock flashing continuously

My laptop was working fine last night, this morning the screen stays blank, caps lock flashes once every 3 seconds or so continuously, the wireless light is solid amber, no other lights are on. I've tried a hard reset to no avail.
When I power it on it sounds like the fan spins up and it tries to boot, then 2 seconds later it is quiet and nothing happens, if I close the lid without powering off the outside light on the top of the case stays on so it is not shutting down or in sleep mode when the case is closed.
I've looked at a bunch of troubleshooting and none of the info seems to match this, any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

a single CAPS flash is a CPU failure, you can try following the below steps but it will most likely need to go in for repair
    power drain;-
    -remove battery and power cable
-hold power button for 20 seconds
    BIOS recovery;-
    -hold windows+B
-turn computer on keeping those keys held down
if the light is still flashing at this point you'll need to contact HP, if it is in warranty then the repair should be free, if not there will be a cost

  • CQ57 caps lock flashes

CQ57 366SA  It started with a failed bios update. Caps lock flashes twice. Tried and failed to recover following steps found on this site. Now caps lock only falshes once. Still no boot. Help needed please

    Hi,
If you have an option to roll back to previous BIOS version, then you can try it. After that if the issue still persists with 1 flash on the caps locks, then its an issue with CPU which you have to get it checked.

Hi, my HP (Entertainment Notebook HP Pavillion dv7-4107sl) has a serious problem and has stopped working.

  • Caps Lock flashing fix!

    Ok I have a HP dv6.
It has had all the usual problems of heating etc. It finally died with the flashing caps lock. This indicated either a problem with the CPU or the motherboard.
I had a CPU that fitted, so I tried that. No luck.
With lots of reading, I found that with lots of thermal cycles, solder can change to a crystalline structure. The "blanket" fix was a strong indicator that it was a bad solder connection.
Ok so how to fix it.
It is called re flowing the solder. You can google it. It worked perfectly for me, so now I have a fully repaired laptop for no cost!
    Ok, how to do it.
THIS MAY KILL YOUR MOTHERBOARD! But hay it is already dead, so why not try it. It worked for me!
1 Remove your motherboard from your laptop.
2 Remove all ram, CPU, wires, plastic pads, cooling fan and everything else.
3 There are two chips that contact the heat transfer pipes. They are your target.
4 Wrap your mother board in tin foil. Remove the foil from on top of the two chips.
5 Make sure that only the two chips are uncovered. Everything else must be covered.
6 Pre heat your oven to 200C yep you are going to re melt the solder on these chips.
7 place in the oven for 9 minutes. Now this is the max that it took for me. I tried 8 minutes, and it did to work. 9 was the winner.
8 After 9 minutes turn the oven off and open the door. Do not move, or bump the board. Just let it cool.
    9 Now reinstall the board.
    10 enjoy your laptop!
It might me wise to keep an eye on things to make sure that it does not somehow burst into flames.
Good luck. Hope it works for you as well as it did for me.

I have seen this done using a heat gun on the chips also- even a hair dryer. Might be less risk to motherboard than full bake in oven. Anyway-whatever works, right?
Kudos on your successful repair and for sharing!

  • Bug report: crazy keyboard (caps lock flashing)

    Hi all!
I had the problem of the "crazy keyboard" and I think I understand the cause.
    Mac model: Macbook pro MB134LL/A
OS: Snow leopard 10.6.5 with latest updates
Problem: sometimes the caps lock button flash and the trackpad freezes.
I read similar problems in the forum, without a solution.
I have an admin account on my mac and I installed the software "mobile partner" to manage mobile connections with an internet key huawei e176.
Now I have version 16.001.17.04.51 for the mobile partner, and version 4.23.03.00 for the key drivers.
The "crazy keyboard" problem can happen with these versions and with previous versions too.
I noticed that in "system preferences->network->advanced settings of the installed HUAWEIMobile-Modem" the drivers are set by default to generic apple modem. So I changed with the "huawei mobile connect - 3G modem" drivers but sometimes this preference automatically changes back to generic apple modem.
When the keyboard goes crazy I see that the drivers are set to generic apple modem.
"Crazy keyboard" appears only after installing the internet key, so I think that the cause of the problem is the automatic change of the modem drivers.
How to solve the problem?Change the admin account, so to avoid changes?
    Thank you

Here’s the problem as best I can explain it with the help of the “/usr/openwin/demo/xev” tool.
With the “Caps Lock” key engaged:
Press and release of the (dotted) “i” key WRONGLY gives uppercase (dotless) “I” letter with “keycode = 59” and “keysym = 0x49”.
Press and release of the (dotless) “ı” key correctly gives uppercase (dotless) “I” letter with “keycode = 19” and “keysym = 0x49”.
    Disengaging the “Caps Lock” key:
    Holding down the “Shift” key:
Press and release of the (dotted) “i” key correctly gives uppercase (dotted) “İ” letter with “keycode = 59” and “keysym = 0x2a9”.
Press and release of the (dotless) “ı” key correctly gives uppercase (dotless) “I” letter with “keycode = 19” and “keysym = 0x49”.
    Summary:
The delivery of the keysym value of 0x49 seems to be wrong for the “Caps Lock” + “i” keys combination. (Shouldn’t it be 0x2a9?)
I have learned that user 925353 has initiated SR: 3-5545975463 reporting this problem.

  • Caps Lock Flashing - No Boot up ????

May i just say i have just experienced this myself... i was like oh **** after reading all about the blink codes etc... Has anyone tried using a USB (dongle) flash drive and tried booting up with that in the USB slot.... My computer then booted no problem... so to all that go on about the blink codes i.e 1blink cpu etc are WRONG.. Each computer can be different i suppose but the dongle USB in to BOOT brought my computer back from the brink of trash..!! it is now being checked for RAM issues so i am not fooled by wrong comments made by amatuer techies..!!! NO OFFENCE more of a Lesson i guess..
Those with the same problem i suggest trying it..!!! BOOT with a USB Flash Drive in the USB slot, the one next to the AC Power lead slot..!!! All the best but it is definitely fixable i believe..!!!

  • HP Pavilion g6 Caps Lock Blinking 3 Times

    Hello,
I have a HP Pavilion g6 running Windows 7. Recently, the screen went blank with the caps lock flashing 3 times. Discovering this is a memory module issue, I reseated the memory modules, which solved the problem. A few hours later, the problem recurred. Every time I've reseated the modules, the computer boots up and runs fine, but I can never make it through a full Windows memory diagnostic without the problem recurring. I've tried many different combos, including swapping the modules and removing one or the other, etc. I can surf the web and the computers seems to be stable, but when I perform any taxing tasks (i.e.- running a diagnostic, checking Windows Experience, etc.) the problem recurs. Will replacing the modules with new ones solve the issue?

    Hello again ladylady.
In all honesty this has me stumped.  You've replaced both the motherboard AND the memory.  However, the issue persists.  The only major component of the machine which hasn't been replaced is the CPU and I don't see how that could cause the notebook to throw an error related to the RAM.  It could also be a false positive but there is no real way to determine that.  Another possible cause I could see would be an issue with the BIOS.  However, if you can't boot the notebook you're not going to be able to flash the BIOS either.
The only thing you could do at this point is let a technician take a look at the computer in person.  Many times local shops will give you a diagnosis while in the store.  I suggest taking it to a shop such as this and letting them give you a second opinion.  You could also contact HP Support (especially if this notebook is in warranty) at 1-800-474-6836 if you're in the US/Canada.  If you're in another part of the world you'd need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your region's contact information.

  • Pavilion dv6-3040sa, black screen, flashing caps lock

Hey all, In need of some help for a friend, her laptop has had this issue for a while now and only just come to me for help. Her HP Pavilion DV6-3040SA has an odd issue with it, if you power it up the display doesn't come on and the caps lock just flashes, it will continue to flash until the laptop is turned off. On the help section a flashing caps lock does not refer to any particular error. I've reseated RAM, tried hard resetting, reseated the CPU and it managed to power up, then after it was turned off, it wouldn't power up again and had the same issue, after playing with it some more it powered up and worked for 2 days, when it promptly stopped working again. Any reason for this issue?

Processor failures can be have inconsistently.  I have seen processor failures start with 1-2 second hangs in the OS to working one day and not at all the next.
The blinking code you have desribed is a beep code of one.  Review the following table found here.

The options for a blink code of 1 is to reseat the CPU as you have already done or to replace the processor.  Since the issue returns after reseating the CPU, it looks like the CPU needs to be replaced.  Sorry.
