Can I install a mSATA ssd in my HP ENVY 17t-k000 CTO Notebook PC? Added a 250 gb SATA sdd and 8 gb memory chip today but could not find any way to also add a 250 gb mSATA sdd. I looked on the front and back side of the system board.

The Service Manual is no help whatsoever. It says an M.2 mSSD is supported on "select models" but there is no picture of it in the Manual or indication where it is on the "Select Models". Those that do have it use an M.2 version (three connector prongs not 2) so your 840 Evo would not work even if you had one of the "Select Models". I believe on those that have it the M.2 port is right on the motherboard so if you do not see it there you are not among the select.

  • G500 - Is it possible to install a mSATA SSD drive?

    Hi!
I am interested in the Lenovo G500 i7-3612QM and I would like to be able to install a mSATA SSD drive on it.
I have read that these drives can be installed on a PCI Express Mini Card slot, and according to the Hardware Maintenance Manual (p. 29) the computer has two of these slots:
      -Wimax/WIFI  x  1
      -SSD  x  1
The problem is that, although the Wi-Fi slot is easily visible (it appears in a picture in the manual, p. 45), I can't find the second slot, neither in the manual nor in the picture of the inside of the notebook I found in this web (The text is in hungarian, but I haven't been able to find any other picture).
Does anybody know if the second PCI Express slot really exists, please?
    Thank you very much!

  • Can I Install an msata SSD in Envy 14-2010TX (QB422PA)

I have an Envy 14-2010TX Beats Edition (Model QB422PA#AB5).
As the current WD 750GB HDD is quite slow, I was planning on installing a msata (say 80GB) and using Intel Smart Response Technology to provide SSD caching on the larger HDD.
I need the capacity so can't really just swap out the HDD for a SDD (even a 512GB SSD is not enough)
Having taken the HDD out and looked, it appears the system has an msata port under the existing 750GB HDD, but I cannot tell if it's electrically active (I can see the female socket and screw holes as if it's ready for an msata card to plug in).
First, I need to know if this is possible from a hardware perspective (e.g.. is the msata port active, will it be recognised if ssd installed), and secondly, I do not see any related (e.g.. RAID, etc.) entries in the BIOS so how would this be set up?
Could anyone please help with this, possibly through your own experience, of from a HP technicians perspective?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

  • Help with Installing a new SSD on my x201

I just purchased a crucial 256gb realssd C300 for my 2month old x201.  What is the best way to install the new SSD.  I have read that a simple cloning may not be the best approach.  Can I do a clean install by using the boot disk I made when I first got the x201 along with the recovery media disks? I searched for a thread on this but haven't been able to find any.
    Thanks in advance.

Your old HDD should be already aligned, so cloning is not a problem.
Installing seven from a vanilla media or from the lenovo original media should lead also in aligned partition(s).
You can just check the alignement with Paragon align utility and eventually and you can align after the installation process, whatever method you have choosed to install.

  • Tecra R840 installing mSata SSD in position of 3G module

    Hello,
i have a Tecra R840-110 model, there is also 3G module inside, i would like to install the mSata SSD in the pcie slot.
Is possible to use the mSata SSD in the pcie slot instead of 3G module?
    Thank you for your help!

I think something like this is not possible. Mainboard ports are not some kind of flexible ports.
In the past Toshiba has offered second HDD upgrade in place of optical disc drive using special adapter.

  • Can I install a mSATA as a primary drive on my C560?

Hi all, I Just want to check if it is possible to install a mSATA SSD on my system. There is one port that appears to be a mSATA slot but the screw position holes are not there.
    Anybody have any clues?

    hi moonbugs,
Yep, That's definitely a MPCIE used by SSD
But I strongly suggest you have a detection test first before you buy an SSD
If you know someone or you can bring this system in a store and have an SSD tested out to it first.
Since this port is meant for a TV tuner card and the models released does not offer SSD.
this Port might not support SSD signaling and may fail on detecting an SSD Card.
Again Test out a borrowed card first before you buy one.
But I assure you the port is a MPCIE.

  • Hp envy 15-j172np - msata ssd as primary boot

    Hello,
I just bought a new hp envy, i want to put a msata ssd drive and use as primary drive and install windows there.
i red that some people are having problems with selecting msata ssd as primary in similar models, and its not possible to set msata as primary in boot device priority.
Is it possible to do this in this model?  Or is it possible with a simple process?
And by the way, am i violating warranty by installing a msata ssd myself?
    thanks

    @3uric0 ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  You would have to check the bios to see if this was possible.
Check the advanced boot settings if they are listed.  Depending on the model of notebook some BIOS options are not available.

Hey guys, I have a cruicial msata 256gb ssd on the way. What is the easiest way to clone my hdd onto it? I'm not that experienced so please keep it simple. From what I can tell its not as easy as switching from hdd to sata ssd. The cloning process there was pretty simple. But I returned my sata ssd and now I'm back to the hdd. So I just need to know an easy way to get my y500 running the OS off the msata ssd like I did with my sata ssd? From my google searches i don't know if there is? Thank you
Ok, so I found a tutorial:
    http://blog.laptopmag.com/triple-you...in-your-laptop
I installed the msata ssd but I am not seeing it being read? I don't see it in my computer, and I dont see it in disk management....any ideas? do I have to enable it somewhere?

    Hi
I've installed a mSATA SSD drive from Samsung in my X230i, but I cannot find out how to set it up as a cache drive.
I've tried installing Intel RST. It found the drive and after formatting the drive, it said al was good, but it didn't work...
Then I tried installing ExpressCache but that just said that their were no SSDs to be used...

  • HP dv6-6117dx, can I install an SSD in this? SATA 2-3.0 or SATA 3-6.0?

Hi all, I read the manual for the dv6-6117dx laptop, and it stated only Intel based versions of this laptop were able to use SATA based SSD drives, but I think it was referring to SATA 6. Can I install a SATA 3.0 SSD in this laptop as I have a SATA 3.0 SSD 64GB in my desktop that I thought maybe I'd move over to the laptop, but not sure if this is doable due to the manuals reference to Intel only? I would think that an SSD at SATA 2.0 standards would work, but Thanks for any replies.
AMD 3500M, 500GB SATA drive, 4GB ram, etc.

Hi Pepe, a lot of confusion going on with the new sata designations. I think for everyone's information, I'll try to set the record straight as far as what I have read on the subject, and what the SATA committee, commission, or what-have-you, stated they would like people to refer to SATA standards as. Not sure these are set in stone, but I think they are. Please correct me if I am mistaken. I won't go into anything below sata 2.0 as I either didn't read that part or don't remember. lol
SATA II or 2.0 refers to SATA 3Gbps not SATA 3.0 - Sata III or 3 does refer to SATA 3.0 which is the current top standard at 6Gbps, hence SATA 6. This is the way it was, but I think now, they have simplified it to either SATA 3 or SATA 6 so there is no confusion, 3 is 3Gbps - 6 is 6Gbps. This is what I read they would like drive makers to label their drives as, and skip the 2.0, and 3.0 monikers. There is also going to be, soon, if not already, SATA Express which will boost performance to 6Gbps, 8Gbps, or 16Gbps using the pci express slot. SSD manufacturers are making them faster, and faster which is good for us as prices on lesser drives will drop, hopefully, and we can use the express slot included in just about all computers, and not have to purchase a SATA 6 controller card.
And thanks Pepe for reminding me I already knew the answer. The SATA standards are compatible across all speeds, and connections so an SSD should be no problem, but at SATA 3 or less speed, depending on what's in this laptop. I do know it has a SATA HD, and SATA DVD, but don't get why HP would not implement the 6Gbps standard which you, and the AMD specs say, is embedded in the chipset? I'm hoping maybe it's a bios thing or some other update that will fix it because if my current drives are running off an AMD chipset, and the computer has a SATA HD & DVD, then it stands to reason the hardware is there as SATA standards for the 3500m CPU chipset include it. Unless there is a different AMD chipset in here? Hmm, very thought provoking. Maybe I'll call tech support, and try to get an answer because it doesn't make sense at all.
Anyhoo Pepe, thanks for taking the time to respond to this. Just trying to think why there would be no SSD drive availability on this particular laptop as opposed to one that is exactly the same except has an Intel chipset? I'm wondering whether HP cut some corners here as AMD's chipset, specification-wise, is superior to Intel's at this point in the game. Thanks again, and please, anybody, if you know the answers to these questions, assumptions, please cough up some info so I don't have to call Tech, and beg for tier 2-3 support. lol
P.S.. I love this laptop, and doubt any answer is going to make me return it, but I am curious as to why no SATA 6, and maybe not even SATA 3 when the chipset supposedly supports it, and there are 2 SATA drives already integral to the laptop. I am assuming on a laptop, the CPU's corresponding chipset would have to be installed. Given this has SATA drives in it, and a chipset supporting SATA connections, SATA 2.0 should work.

    Also,  found this on Wikipedia
    SATA Terminology
The name SATA II has become synonymous with the 3 Gbit/s standard. In order to provide the industry with consistent terminology, the SATA-IO has compiled a set of marketing guidelines for the third revision of the specification.
The SATA 6 Gbit/s specification should be called Serial ATA International Organization: Serial ATA Revision 3.0.
The technology itself is to be referred to as SATA 6 Gb/s.
A product using this standard should be called the SATA 6 Gb/s [product name].
Using the terms SATA III or SATA 3.0 to refer to a SATA 6 Gbit/s product is unclear and not preferred. SATA-IO has provided a guideline to foster consistent marketing terminology across the industry.
What I origianlly read was the designations SATA 3 Standing For SATA II, 2.0 & 3Gbps, and Sata 6 referencing Sata III, 3.0 & 6.0Gbps, so Sata 3 & Sata 6 sound great, no confusion, no need for Gbps or Gb/s as seen above, SATA 3 & 6, and soon to be SATA Express 8 Gb/s & 16 Gb/s All Sata designations should be geared to actual throughput of the specification to simplify the juggernaut of unneeded information, and resulting complictaions. They should all be simplified as SATA 3, SATA 6, SATA E8, and SATA E16. Why complicate matters with revisions, etc, we all know what they mean when stated as I have layed out, at least IMO! lol Take care all This is off topic, but hope it helps some users understand SATA  terminology, and sorry Pepe for misleading you, and otherswith incorrect information provided in the topic of this thread.
Forgot, this has USB 3.0 ports so I know it has the coresponding chipset for the AMD A8 3500M CPU which supports SATA 6. HP, please answer why this laptop will not allow install of an SSD rated at SATA 6, and possibly not an SSD rated at SATA 3?

  • GT60 2OD-026US mSATA SSD question. Please help.

I'm getting the GT60 2OD-026US.  Currently, it has a 256GB Samsung PM841 mSATA SSD Drive in slot 1 with my OS installed on it. The other two slots are currently empty.   The second HD has a 750GB 7200RPM Serial-ATA II installed.
My question.  I would really like to install one more mSATA SSD in slot 2 for now, but also slot 3 down the road.  I asked the tech where I'm getting it if I could add an Intel 525 256GB in slot 2 and he told me no.  He said I needed the same brand and size mSATA installed in slot 2 and the same for slot 3 if I eventually wanted one there too. He wouldn't explain why this would be the case, he just told me that was the way it was. Is this true?  Can I only get fill up the other slots with the same brand and size mSATA SSDs?
If it is not true, what mSATA's seem to be the most compatible with the GT60 2OK-026US?  I would really like to expand my SSD options.
Any help, information and/or explanation would be greatly appreciated.

That's rubbish. You can use any msata SSD, it's just a drive. There is no reason for that.

  • Installing mSATA SSD as secondary drive in Lenovo A730

    Hi:
I purchased a new Lenovo A730 desktop all in one pc this week.  As everyone knows, it only comes with a 5400 rpm HDD. That of course is really slow, which I anticipated. Fortunately, it comes with an empty mSATA slot. Therefore, following the advice of others with this otherwise wonderful machine, I purchased a 128 GB SSD drive to install into the mSATA slot. Done.
Using Macrium Reflect Disk Imaging, I cloned the hard drive onto the SSD drive.
    Done.
    I changed the boot order.
To test that I could actually boot from the SSD drive, I unplugged the hard drive, it booted from the SSD Drive. Phew.
I plugged back in the hard drive. Rebooted. It booted from the SSD drive, so far so good, I go to partitions to then attempt to delete the hard drive. The hard drive does not show up.
It does show up in the BIOS. However, it does not show up under disk management. Nor does it show up under Macrium Reflect Disk.
However, interestingly, if I revert the boot order so that the Hard Drive boots first, then of course it boots from the hard drive and everything shows up again. If I change the boot order so that it boots from the SSD drive, no more hard drive.
I really would like to boot from the SSD Drive, delete the hard drive, and use it as storage, but I cannot seem to cure this problem.
If anyone has a solution, I would really appreciate it.
    Thank you.

If same problem, consider using Paragon Backup & Recovery 12 Home free trial (complere guide here) to migrate the OS, drivers, etc from the HDD to the mSATA SSD. When done, set the following in the BIOS and configure it to boot from the mSATA SSD and observe.
    Security Tab
Secure Boot = Disabled (if applicable)
    CSM = Enabled (if applicable)
    Exit Tab:
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS / Disabled (if applicable)

  • When i boot i get a flashing folder with a question mark. disk utility doesnt work or read my harddrives to boot with. i installed a new SSD and its not reading that either. i have a macbook pro 2011, any help?

So I came to this problem a while ago. M ycomputer basically froze so I was forced to shut down by holding the button down. When I started it up I got the flashing folder with a question mark. I started it up holding down the command and r keys which brought me to disk utility. Although my computer doesn't read that I have a hard drive to start it up. When I click on the disk utility app, I cannot verify or repair anything either. The buttons won't allow me to click on them. It also shows "Mac OSX Base System" which shows I have files and what not saved. I had been told that I need a new hard drive so I bought and manually installed a OWC SSD 240GB drive and when i booted the computer up it booted up yo the operating system fine with all my files and what not on there. After about twenty minutes, it froze again. I forced a shut down, restarted and the same thing happened. I am not able to choose my SSD to boot up, although thats probably because it doesn't have an operating system installed on it??
    i have a Macbook Pro 13" 2011
any help would be great, I'm overall confused.

    ryansaint11,
this isn’t Apple support; this is a user-to-user forum. We’re just fellow users of Apple products here.
If you want to boot from your SSD, then you should put the SSD where your HDD currently is, and put the HDD into the optical bay. (That setup will also get you the best performance.) At the moment, you’re still booting from your HDD. Note that you will need to format your SSD in Disk Utility [with the “Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)” format] so that you can install OS X onto it.
Since you have an Early 2011 model, it might or might not have originally come with grey installation DVDs. You will be able to find out whether it did or not by trying to use OS X Internet Recovery to install OS X onto your SSD. If it does not work, or if the installed OS turns out to be Snow Leopard, then it will have originally come with the DVDs, and you should purchase a replacement pair of DVDs from Apple or iFixit; those discs will have your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test and its iLife apps. If the installed OS turns out to be Lion, then it will not originally have come with the grey installation DVDs, and your Apple Hardware Test will be installed along with Lion, and your iLife apps will be downloadable from the Mac App Store.
