Dv6 HD crash

I have a DV3181nr and my hard drive crashed.  Of course, it's out of warranty so getting any advice from HP is furtile.  I replaced the harddrive so that's no problem.  My isses are two-fold, however, I need the drivers and the recovery disc seems useless.
I put the recovery disc in and booted from the CD Drive, but got a message that the recovery disc is "incompatible with this computer."  What's the point of having a recovery disc if it won't work when you change HDs?
More importantly, I need drivers.  I went to the website to download same, but I'm not 100% sure of which ones to take.
For example, I can't get the wi-fi to work even though I'm downloading what I think are Wi-Fi drivers.
So basically, can anyone give me the exact name and ver. # of the drivers I need?
Much thanks!

When requesting assistance, please provide the complete model name and product number (p/n) of the HP computer in question. HP/Compaq makes thousands of models of computers. Without this information it may be difficult or impossible to assist you in resolving your issue.
The above requested information can be found on the bottom of your computer, inside the battery compartment or on the startup BIOS screen. Please see How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number? for more assistance locating this information. DO NOT include your serial number. Please enter the model/product information into HP's Online Consumer Support page and post it here for our review.
Assuming you meant you have an HP Pavilion dv6-3181nr Entertainment Notebook Computer, the recovery discs not working could be due to the recovery discs or your computer being corrupt. Please see DVD - Windows 7 64b + Supp 2 Recovery Kit to purchase Recovery Discs from HP. There is, however, no guarantee that these discs will work any better.
Alternatively, if you can still read the 25-digit Windows product key on the Microsoft COA (see example below) affixed to the bottom the computer, you can install Windows 7 using this key.
Please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" for instructions on how to download Windows 7 SP1, create the installation media, and install Windows 7 SP1 using the 25-digit product key from the Microsoft COA on your computer. Understand that this method will not contain any HP customizations or HP value-added software. Please see your computer's HP Pavilion dv6-3181nr Entertainment Notebook PC Drivers page for Windows 7 drivers. If you continue having issues locating the proper drivers, please post (just the text) the Windows Device Manager's "Hardware Ids" for all remaining missing or unknown devices as shown in the example below;

  • HP Pavilion dv6 notebook crashed, and won't run properly anymore

A couple of days ago, my notebook froze, whilst I was listening to music, and everything switched to "Not Responding". The first two or three times it started to work again. But one time it just kept saying that, so I had to force shut down it. I run Windows 8 on it. When I restarted it, it went to the Windows 8 screen whilst loading, then a black screen. It remained on that screen for a while, so I force shut down the notebook again. When I restarted it, the notebooks automatically went into System Recovery, and attempted to fix system errors. It went to another black screen, and in some impatience, I force shut down the notebook again. I assume this may have resulted in the corruption of some system files. I restarted it again, but this time left it running overnight, again the notebook was trying to do a System Recovery. The next morning I came back to the notebook, and it was on the login screen. It took a very long time attempting to login, and I was in a rush to leave that morning, so force shut it down again. It worked, but very very slowly. It would take ages to even open My Documents. One problem that occurred sometimes was that when I restarted, it would say "boot device not found", and then a couple more force shut downs and start ups later it would find the hard drive. But it still ran really slowly. I realized that it wasn't just going to work like this, so attempted to copy all of my file onto an external hard drive. I left that running overnight, and when I came back in the morning, the notebook was again on the "boot device not found" screen. After that, it refused to do anything but show that same screen, so my cousin, who works in IT, booted Windows 7 onto it from a USB. He tried to work with getting the notebook running, and spent a whole day on it, it ran so slowly, but found that the system files had been corrupted. And there was no access to my hard drive because both the system files and my personal files were on one C: drive, rather than partitions. He spent the afternoon trying to use a file recovery software, and said it managed to get about 90% done, and the approximate file count he stated sounded similar to how many it stated it had found to copy, when I attempted to copy all of my files. So, I'm assuming it's possible to recover my files, though right now I have no access to them. I have no problem with restoring it to it's factory default settings, installing a new operating system, etc, but I really really need my files. I have spent way too much time collectively creating a massive database of various files, in two or so years of use, and it's very unsettling that I may have just lost everything. So, what the hell happened? And how do I fix it? Will I need to send my laptop to HP, because I have no problem in that either, it's of no use to me right now, anyways?

    Hello Aeonica,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
I understand the computer is unable to detect a boot device and run properly. I will do my best to assist you.
To troubleshoot the issue, HP released a document on this hardware error. If you try these steps, you may be able to resolve the boot device error: Resolve Boot Device not Found Error Message
I believe these steps will resolve the issue. Unfortunately, the computer should be serviced if the issue is not resolved. To do this, please contact HP phone support. You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide

  • Dv6-1253cl 8gb RAm- crash- show 4gb RAM (8 gb installed)

i bought this dv6-1253cl from costco and i tried to upgrade the RAM.i bought 2x4 gb RAM from ebay and installed into my laptop
ddr 2667mhz. the ram work fine on other laptops that i got but when i install the thing into my laptop, first it run perfectly and then crash ramdomly
it boot, the RAM work fine, bios ram test ok, BUT WHEN I RAN THE LAPTOP FOR 30 mins it crash again.
i tried everything including remove and swap place between 2 piece of ram.
the mainboard of my laptop is PM45 and there is nothing wrong with it.

    Hi,
Does your upgrade ram match the compatible RAM that HP and all major memory manufacturers list on their websites?
Are the memory sticks identical or did you mix them with your original RAM?  That is usually a no go.
FYI...If your OS is 32-bit then all you will see your OS able to use is @3.25GB ofRAM. That is a 32-bit Microsoft Operating system Architecture issue. It is called PAE.

  • HP pavilion dv6-61 48nr Entertainment PC crashed and get error OxcOOOOOOf

Idifoblem with my pc-ware it had been hacked. Took it to a local businessman who agreed. Got it back and before I really cheup.ed it out--had a new router with a new password installed by internet provider. The IT who worked on it said he was going to "Reformat and reinstall windows". He called me to ask if I had backed up my personal files. I told him " no but remove everything ". He saved all kinds of files and reinstalled them. Within a day I started having problems again. I realized quickly that someone had remote access to my PC. Within a couple of days there was a hidden network set up using my router. My ISP said I was connected but I wasn't. They said it was my problem and should be reported. I was never able to get my settings to match the ones on his hidden network--naturally, since my pc was being remotely controlled. I was totally locked out of many files. There were a lot hidden, but I found a way to get them to show up. I could not get online and I got so angry that I opened the registry using the command regedit. This person probably thought I was too stupid to know anything. Anyway, I started deleting his files and crashed the PC. I had my back up discs and was going to reinstall. (Couldn't use them first time because whoever had hacked it had done something to the CD/DVD drive and it was stuck half open/half shut. The local guy put a used one in. I didn't check it before I deleted half the registry.
I ran the diagnostic tests and the hard disk passed, as did the memory test...both the quick and the full. So I put my recovery disk in and ggrrrrr it gave me the message "Status: 0xc000000f.  Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."   At this point I was ready to destroy it...then I got on iPad, which I hate,  and did a search on the status/info I got and found hundreds had the same problem--all seemingly originating from different problems. Now I am wondering if there IS a way to restore it without spending a fortune on it. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!!!  Lexi

  • Major crash Pavilion dv6-6153cl

My computer kept crashing to blue screen stating hard disk error repeatedly. I attempted restore points and it got worse, crashing more frequently. I restored it to factory settings. It worked for 2 days, then crashed again...but this time, it won't even open...right to blue screen before it can even finish software installation. Tried several times to restore, same problem. I don't have access to a repair shop since I am living in Costa Rica at the moment....HELP!! Please.

Sounds like the hard drive needs to be replaced.A retail hdd can be used, and you will need Recovery Disks to get Windows reinstalled. If you are still within warranty period HP will send a hdd replacement.Contact HP

  • Need step by step instructions to rebuild HD after fatal crash Pavilion dv6 Product #A1U59AV

Factory installed HD suffered fatal crash - nothing recoverable.  Unfortunately cannot clone no image of the old HD is available.
Downloaded and installed Windows Home premium 64 bit iso from digital river but it does not seem to have any drivers.  Also it does not seem to let me change the activation code with - right click Computer then properties.  I want to rebuild exactly as it came from HP when new.   Everything else on the computer seems to work since I have been able install Ubunu from Live CD with no problems.
Please help with step by step instructions how to rebuild.  I am also awaiting recovery disks by mail.
    Thanks

Just wait until you get the recovery disks. HP does not make a great many of the apps available to download. If you just want to restore drivers they are here at this website. After a digital river OS install you will need to use the Microsoft phone activation using the Key Code on the sticker. And yes, the digital river disk is generic and might not have drivers you need.

  • Pavilion dv6-3130tx Blue Screen (BSOD) on adding RAM to second slot

    Hi there,
I own a HP Pavilion dv6-3130tx with total of 3gb of RAM, one 1GB chip and one 2 GB chip. Recently I have been getting a lot of system crashes/freezes and occasional Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) with a variety of error messages. On contacting HP care in India they said to check the RAM chips and the slot for any problem. I have identified that the second slot is one creating the problem as the system crashes if use any one of the chips on that slot while both the RAMs work fine on the other slot.
Additionaly the RAM port/slot cannot be replaced as such, and since it is out of warranty getting the motherboard replaced isn't an alternative either.
So does anyone have any idea what might be the best way out of this problem?

Did the 3GB of RAM come with the computer or did you upgrade it at some point?
What version of Windows are you using?

  • HP Pavilion DV6; Black Screen & Atikmpag.sys BSOD with external Monitor

    Hello Guys.
I have HP Pavilion DV6 Core i7 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 Graphics Card. Two weeks ago, I started getting continous Atikmpag, sys BSODs. The operating system also started giving me warnings about the hardrive. After a few days, the BSODs got more frequent. Then one day, I was doing normal stuff on my PC and the Display Driver crashed. Instead of recovering, the PC froze. I forced restart my PC but it got worse. The display of my laptop went black. I connected the laptop to external monitor which detected the display. When I tried to load the windows, it started giving me the Atikmpag.sys BSOD on the start up. Now the operating system works fine in the Safe Mode but with nothing on the laptop's screen. The soultions I have tried so far are.
    -Reinstalled the windows thrice
-Removed the drivers and installed the updated ones a bunch of times.
-Rolled back the bios to an earlier version
-Removed the hardrive and tried to load it from an operating system installed on external flash drive
-Tried loading the PC with linux on external flash drive
-Opened the laptop and cleaned it thoroughly
-Removed all the components and plugged them one by one.
-Removed the old Atikmpag.sys in system32 folder and expanded it with the latest ones.
-Installed every thing fresh from HP website
None of these tricks have given me any luck yet. The only way, I could use the operating system in normal mode, is to delete the atikmpag.sys file in safe mode and then log on back in normal mode. I also analysed the minidump file through window debugger and it says that atikmpag.sys is causing this crash with the TDR message. I did all these with an external monitor as the display of the laptop is black since that day.
Below are the detailed specs of my laptop.
OS Name: Microsoft Windows 7 (64 bit) Home Premium
    Version: 6.1.7601
System Model: HP Pavilion Dv6 Notebook PC
    Processor: Intel Core i7 Q 721 @ 1.60 GHz
    Bios Version/Date: Hewlett- Packard F.29, 11/7/2011
    Installed Physical Memory (RAM): 6GB
Graphics Card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 1 GB
I have tried almost every solution available on these forums but still have not gotten any where. I am wondering how could the display, graphics card and hard drive stop working at the same time .
I would really appreciate if someone colud help me through this problem.
    Thank you

  • HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC: restore system and drivers

Hi. Some days ago I faced a bad experience with my laptop HP Pavilion dv6 Notebook PC. System crashed. At anytime I tried to switch it on, a message error appeared and system was blocked. Message was: FILE:\BOOT\BCD Status 0xc000000f, asking for running the Windows 7 System disk. But System disk didn't run at all. I checked situation and found the hard disk with 6 partitions instead of 2. I found a partition named BOOT (X that was a replica of C:.  When I tried to restore the system by the recovery disk, something got control of the recovery disk, so that C: could not be formatted; neither X: was. Also, I tried to cancel files in X: but disk was protected and didn't allow any changes. So I could only get my hard disk uninstalled and all the partitions were cleaned off. I got my hard disk perfectly cleaned, but my recovery disk could not be installed properly. Therefore, system was not restored yet. My question is: what should I do to get my laptop with restored system? any ideas?

Depending on the age on your computer, it may have come from the factory with 5 or more partitons. This is common on newer computers that utilize UEFI and GPT partitions. The "Windows 7 System disk", the computer wass asking for is either a Windows 7 installation disc or a Windows 7 Repair Disc. Neither of these discs come with your HP computer and must be downloaded and/or created in Windows.
Start by using your HP Recovery Disc set (should be 3 or more DVDs). Insert disc #1 and reboot your computer to start the process. Insert the remaining discs as requested, until the recovery is finished.
If this doesn't work and you can read the 25-digit Microsoft Windows 7 product key on th Microsoft COA affixed to your computer, please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" to download Windows 7 SP1, create the Windows installation DVD, and install Windows 7.  If you prefer to install Windows 7 from a USB Flash Drive, please download the Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool to create a Windows 7 SP1 USB Flash Drive. • Itunes crashing my graphics card? Laptop?

    Hi All,
Hoping that someone can help me out here - I'm rapidly loosing my faith in Apple..
When the IO7 software came out, I tried to upgrade my Itunes to Version 11.0, downloaded the update, and got 95% of the way through installing it, and it came up with an error message and wouldn't install, deleted all the installation files and i had to start again.
After trying this three times, I eventually deleted itunes all together and did a complete reinstall.
Upgraded to IO7, and have regretted it ever since. My phone bluetooth doesn't sync in my car, my music won't play automatically, the control panel doesn't work, and I buy music on my phone, only to have my phone delete it not only from the library, but the cloud, my purchased playlists, indeed, the only evidence that I ever bought the song, is the invoice in my inbox!
Anyway - Just on a fortnight ago, I bought the first two season of "Person of Interest" through Itunes, and got busy downloading. Thanks to apples security, I then had to go out and buy an HDMI cable to hook up the computer to the TV.
All is going along really well, until two nights ago, when I get this strange error message come up on the TV saying "Scene Selection has been changed". My laptop is completely frozen, the monitor is flicking, and the machine is completely unresponsive. I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds and shut it down, befoer restarting and trying again, only to get 20 minutes into the next episode and having the same problem.
Yesterday, the system crashed practically every 15 minutes.
At first I thought it must be the HDMI cable, as the machine was operating fine without it - but, the cable is brand new, and as the computer has been pretty well doing nothing but downloading episodes and sitting on the TV unit while we watch them, I haven't really been using my laptop much, until today.
I've been doing basic facebok, email, internet browsing, and playing itunes in the background, and my laptop has crashed five times today.
At least three out of the five times it crashed, I was either maximising the itunes screen, or using itunes. (I wasn't really paying attention the other two times, could well have had something to do with itunes, but i'm not 100%)
I'm running windows 7 on an HP Pavillion dv6 notebook.
    2.30GH AMD Turion processor
    4GB Ram
    32 bit operating sytsem
I'm using Itunes 11.01, tried to upgrade to .2 but same error message as previously mentioned - will have to delete itunes and do a complete reinstall.
Basically, has anyone come across this problem? Could Itunes be crashing my computer or graphics card, I've tried changing resolution settings, I've tried not watching the movies in full screen, etc, doesn't matter, still crashes.

  • PP CC 7.2.1.4 crashing at startup please help!

    My system:
    HP Pavilion dv6
Intel Core i7-2630 QM CPU @ 2.00 GHz
    RAM 6GB
    64-Bit
Windows 7 with Service Pack 1
Version: PP CC 7.2.1.4 More Reel
I posted earlier thinking this was a file format issue because I am filming on my Canon T2i.  After trying several formats, including the Eagle Documentary downloaded from the adobe website, and installing Prelude, I realize it's just crashing everytime I try to use it.  It opens and allows me to create a new project but crashes once I go from there.
I tried logging out of CC and logging back in, I also uninstalled Quick Time and restarted my machine.
I just installed PP yesterday. I was very excited to get into the program and begin working and I am sad now that there is some issue. I would really like to be able to utilize my CC membership.  I have spent hours googling and trying to read through other questions to find a situation similar to mine but I must admit I don't completely understand all the computer lingo but I am familiar enough to troubleshoot.
Here is the windows logged error report from the last crash:
