Dv6, Sound Icon has an X, no audio devices installed

I have a dv6 running on windows 7 and the sound has not been working for me the past couple of days (since Sunday actually). The sound icon is displaying a red X, and its telling me no speakers or headphones are plugged in. I have tried to do everything it seems like.  I went to the volume control options and the “all devices currently playing sound” and “the default communication device” are both checked.  I went to “manage audio devices” and it says no audio devices are installed.  I went to Administrative tools, clicked on services and “audio service” is nowhere to be found. So I tried reinstall the audio driver, to update the audio driver, BIOS update before installing an audio driver and still nothing. Matter of fact, every time I tried to download another audio driver, I received a message saying “_ExitError: Error=Error in installation, Call to GetClassDevs” which I have no clue what that means. I tried also to go to “device manager” to see if something that’s supposed to be checked off, which might not have been checked off, but there was absolutely nothing being displayed in the “device manager.”
Basically, can someone please help me out? I’d really appreciate it. I’ve read lots of other posts and they’re not helping me so I’m getting a little desperate.

Wow, sounds like you've done some great troubleshooting with all the things you've tried.
Perhaps something happened Sunday to mess up your sound.
Have you thought of a system restore?  From the document, Using Microsoft System Restore:
System Restore is a software program available in all versions of Windows 7. System Restore automatically creates restore points, a memory of the system files and settings on the computer at a particular point in time. You can also create a restore point yourself. Then, when you use System Restore to restore your computer to a point in time before an issue began, System Restore returns your computer to the files and settings from the restore point. Your personal files and documents are not affected.
It's just a thought, but it might help.

  • No audio devices installed Envy dv6

I recently installed Windows 8.1, and now no sound comes out of my speakers.  I tried updating and reinstalling the audio driver but it still says that there are no audio devices installed. I've tried following the directions on a few forums and none have seemed to work.

You can try few more steps..
    i) Completely uninstall IDT first from control panel and then download it  from here
Temporily disable the anti-virus while re-installing the IDT.
ii) Run HP Support Assitant and check if any HP updates are pending..like BIOS Update..
Recently i came across a similar issue where the sound disappered after a adobe flash update also. So you an try uninstall/reinstall flash and check also.
    Let me know what happens..
Also if nothing works then the last step would be to perform a recovery (factory reset). If problem continues after recovery also the it has to be a hardware issue..
    Note:
If you have HP Support Assistant installed on the computer(The Blue Question Mark) then open it ==> Complete all pending Updates & Tuneups==> Restart and Check. It may solve your problem

  • No audio device installed (Big iss

Hello all,?I have Vista Ultimate and am using an Audixy 4. After installing the new drivers today (SBAXVSD_PCDRV_LB_2_2_0002) I lost my sound. At the device manager i see that "This device is working properly."?When I go to Controle panel/Sound I see the device but I almost none of the commands work (Disable, Test, Configure) only the Properties work but there I cannot do anything useful. When I right click on the Sound icon at the bottom right of the screen and go to Open Volume Mixer, it says "No audio device installed"?Yersterday I also had this issue and reinstalled Vista with a fresh install which fixed the problem. Today I had the same thing again and decided to use my onboard sound card (RealTek, 623_Vista_APO), and nothing changed! I am still getting the same errors as with the Audixy 4. Is there any sollution to this Vista bug??Thanks for reading

I am not sure why anyone is not replying with a resolution but I am having a similar problem. I am having a computer custom built and the Technician building it claims that Windows Vista will not recognize both the Soundblaster Xi Fi Extreme Music sound card and the MSI 8800GTX 768MB video card that I have chosen for the configuration. This is due to some conflict. The Technician claims the problem is the sound card and Creative needs to update drivers before this configuration can be done. Is this true? Can anyone explain why? I know Creative has Windows Vista drivers but apparently for this situation it does not resolve the conflict.

  • "No Audio Device Installed" in Windows Vista.

Back in september 2011 I mysteriously lost my audio. I have a red X over my speaker icon in my system tray. When I put the cursor over the speaker icon I get this message "No Audio Device Installed". I went to the HP Customer web page and found the audio driver: Realtek High Definition Audio Version 6.0.1.5548 (sp37324.exe). I downloaded the program and saved it to my download folder. I put a short cut to it on my desktop. The only way I can get sound is whenever I turn on my computer I right click the desktop short cut and run as Administrator and install the program. My sound comes on. It works as long as I keep the computer on. Whenever I restart the computer I'm back to the red X over the speaker icon.
Now, Windows Update has sent me (on 3 occassions the last couple of weeks) an "optional update"...the Realtek High Definition Audio. Each time I download it and install it and do a restart, but I get the same red X over the speaker icon. It's Ground Hog Day!
My question: Is it safe to uninstall the Realtek High Definition Audio driver and reinstall the sp37324.exe without totally sending my audio into a Black Hole? BTW,I don't have a recovery disk.
I hope someone on this forum can help me. I've exhausted all avenues.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
My suggetion: Totally uninstall it, reboot the machine and install it again. You can uninstall it from
       Control panel > Device Manager
It should be under Sound ...
       Right click it & Uninstall

  • No audio devices installed? (Pavilion g7-1318dx Notebook Windows 7)

Someone please help me out with this, I would be so so soooo grateful.
From out of the blue my Pavilion g7-1318dx Notebook running Windows 7 won't play any audio at all. It says that there are no audio devices installed. I've been reading other posts on this forum for a couple days now, and none of the options have worked for me. Prior to the audio disappearing I haven't updated anything or installed anything new (though yesterday, I did install a few updates hoping that maybe the problem was that something was outdated... but it wasn't). I did a system restore, and still nothing. Also, I can't record sound either (obviously) as it's telling me there are no audio devices installed.
I ran the device manager, and under sounds, video, and game controllers the only audio device listed is AMD High Definition Audio Device (which is what my notebook uses for audio apparently, when I connect to my TV which, incidentally, works fine!) but the IDT HD Audio Driver is not working at all. I've tried reinstalling the driver, but I get an error every time and it says it's unable to install it. The answer might be a simple one to someone out there, but it eludes me.
So....anyone out there who can help me? Please.

You can try few more steps..
    i) Completely uninstall IDT first from control panel and then download it  from here

  • No Audio Devices Installed

I was listening to music today when all the computer no longer played with the headphones. I would put different headphones in the jack and it would only play on the computer speakers. Then the computer froze and I had to reboot it. Now under the sound file it says there are no audio devices installed. What should I do?
    Any help would be great!

    HI,
EHanrehan, you have a loptop DV6700 hece please post in the Laptop section.
    Hi,
WError, if you are getting Error Code - 10, then it represents that the drivers are not installed correctly.
In order to resolve the issue, unintsall the Realtek Realtek High Definition Audio Driver from Program and Features. Restart the PC and then install the drivers from Recovery Manager. You can also download the driver sp26860.exe and then update with sp37324.exe and your issue will be resolved.
    Good Luck

  • Satellite A300 - No Audio Device Installed

    Hey,
Over the last week or so I've been having trouble with my audio.
The first incident occurred whilst I was browsing the internet, all of a sudden some error popped up and turned off my sound. When I checked for audio devices it said there where none installed and when I checked the device manager there were also none installed. I then uninstalled the driver/software from my computer and reinstalled them, but still the drivers were not recognized. Instead there was only a HDMI Output driver which would say it was playing sound, but none was coming out of my speakers.
Then I had just given up hope, and was playing a video (without sound) when all of a sudden sound began playing out of the speakers and all the sound drivers were recognized.
Then the same incident as the first happened again, and now I still can't fix it.
Also errors keep coming up saying 'Soundchanger.exe" is not working.
Any help would be great! I have uninstalled and reinstalled all the correct drivers and still used system restore but still the sound won't work.

    Hi
Did this happen with the Windows Vista preinstalled by Toshiba?
If yes then I would recommend restoring the OS using the Toshiba HDD image or the recovery disk.
I think this is necessary if the sound driver installation or update didnt help.
The new OS installation would be also helpful to check if this is a hardware or only software issue.
Usually after new OS installation the sound should work correctly. But if you this sound issue will still appear then a hardware problem could be the reason for that like mentioned by Akuma.
I had some sound issues but only after the _Win XP_ installation. Some MS patches which are a part of SP3 were no installed and therefore the sound didnt function.
So I removed the sound driver, installed SP3 and after new reboot I installed the SP3 and the sound worked again

  • "No audio device installed"? Help?

I have a dv9500 that I got from a friend, I keeps telling me that there is no audio device installed and won't let me play sound. The obvious answer for me is to install and audio device...but how do I do that? I'm usually a bit computer savvy, but I'm lost on this. I would really like to be able to have audio, How do I fix this?!

If you click on the "Start" button and right click on "Computer" and select "Manage" and then after the window opens, select "Device Manager" in the list on the left... when it opens up, you will see the list of devices installed and check to see if you have a sound/audio driver installed. Let me know what you see.     I'll keep trying to assis you.

  • T400 No audio Device Installed

My T400 has all the latest drivers which say "working properly."  However I am still without functioning speakers and microphone.  When I go to volume mixer I see "No audio device installed."  I have been trying to troubleshoot this for weeks and have been unsuccessful following various tips.  I also called the brilliant phone support who couldn't even get my email down correctly to send me the self-guided troubleshooter or whatever they called.   Does anyone have any suggestions I could try to correct this problem.  Much thanks in advance!

If you have just installed XP then that could happen if you do not have SP3. If you did just install XP then update to SP3 and reinstall the audio drivers again. Otherwise we will need more info.

  • Preferences Sound Icon has changed...

Hey, the Sound icon on my Preferences pane is different, all of a sudden i have noticed its changed to a strange looking icon, a kind of switch sorta thing, any ideas how to restore it to what it should be?
    Many thanks.

    Stuart,
Glad to hear that your problem has been resolved. OnyX probably took care of that recalcitrant cache.
Cache, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia has a good basic explanation.
Macintosh OS X Routine Maintenance, by Randy B. Singer, has some practical explanations regarding the use of Mac OS X cache cleaning utilities.
The X Lab, by Dr. Smoke also has two articles that will explain the use/misuse of cache cleaning utilities:
    1. Cache cleaning: Side effects of System cache cleaning
    2. Resolving disk, permission, and cache corruption
