DV6000 not recognizing it's own old hard drive

Hi all. I tried putting in a new hard drive, went through the clone process, installed the new drive, and got an error message about checking the cable. That, however, is not my concern. Now the problem is, I put the old hard drive back in and the computer won't recognize it now! I get the initial "HP" screen where I can hit F10 or ESC, then it just goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor. I can hear and feel the drive spin up, though the light only comes on briefly. Checkin the BIOS boot order, I move it to the top or second place, with CD/DVD drive second, then save and quit the BIOS, but the boot order does not seem to save, because when I go into it again, the "USB Floppy" is moved to the top again. I was able to successfully connect the old drive to my desktop and access it there, so the drive itself is working fine. And it was working fine in the laptop the morning I started trying to clone it. I have even tried hooking it up to the notebook with a USB cable instead of in it's normal slot, still no luck.
It has BIOS version F.08. Does ANYONE have any ideas what I can do to fix this?

Did you try to reset the BIOS?
Open the memory cover under your laptop using a philips screw driver.
There a small white plug that leads to the RTC battery ...on one end and the other end is plugged on the motherboard.
By being very careful remove the little plug which is connected to the laptop.
Prior doing this make sure the normal laptop battery is not connected and also no power cable is connected to your laptop.
Leave the laptop without it connected for about 60secs ... then connect the little white plug, assmble the memory cover.
Install the laptop battery, connect to the mains and try again.
You will have to set again the time and date in BIOS

Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on. It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive. You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

CS3 on old hard drive need help to activate

My HP motherboard failed (manu defect) the hard drive is fine and has my adobe CS3 suite on it. I bought a new laptop and tethered the old hard drive to my new computer. I try to start the cs3 but a pop up says my computer lacks an adobe llinguistic code?? I moved and lost the serial on the case. How do I use my cs3 from the old hard drive?

You probably do not use it from the old hard drive vecause the program needs to be installed on whatever machine is trying to use it... even if you intentional;ly tried to install on a separate drive the program still needs to install some ellements on the main system drive.

How did you import the photos to iPad and iPhone?
If the photos have been synced to the iPhone and iPad using iTunes, you cannot sync them back.

Copy the entire iTunes folder from \Users\<User>\Music on the old drive into your music folder on the new computer.

You do not need to load 10.5.8 onto your new drive in order for a 10.6.8 system to see the contents of a 10.5.8 system.
You might want to check out the hard drive troubleshooting bootk in the downloads section of this web site:

They also sell a product named Phoenix that can do OS extraction and volume copying/cloning, but to be honest I don't know if it's appropriate in this case.
I would suggest the following:
Open up Terminal.app (under utilities) and type "diskutil list" without the quotes. This is the command line version of Disk Utility. If the external drive doesn't show up at all, then it's likely not connected properly, not getting power, or just plain dead. If it shows up with only a devce name like disk0s16 but no volume it means the drive is seen, the OS just can't make sense of it.
Assuming the drive shows up, I would try to boot off the original installl disks for the system and run Disk Utility from that. I'm assuming the drive will show up. You'll want to select the option to repair the drive and then perform the option to repair the permissions.
If the unit isn't showing up, as per step 1, try a different USB port. More importantly with your unit, try it on another side of the unit if possible. If you read the book I referenced above, some of those units have I/O boards that are separated from the logic board. If the cable from the logic board to the I/O card goes bad or has problems, which isn't all that uncommon, some or all of the ports on the I/O card may appear to be bad as well. If you use a USB port on another side, it would be routing out of a completely different I/O path, so that's a potential problem.
If the drive is only seen with a device name such as disk0s16, it's likely either the index files are corrupt beyond Disk Utility's ability to see them. The only thing that I think would help would be a product named DIsk Warrior, but I can't guarantee that.

The company that I linked in the first link above also makes a product named Scannerz that does HD and system testing. The Scannerz/Disk Warrior combination make a good pair because the complement each other....Scannerz does what Disk Warriror can't and Disk Warrior does what Scannerz can't. However, at this point I'm not too sure getting a tool like Scannerz would be of much use because it sounds like the damage has already been done.

Depends on where you got it - if it came on yoru compujter then you need to have accepeted it in the App store - and it will be in your purchases when you log in with the Apple ID that you used to set up your computer - it mahy be hidden - if you do not find it unhide applications in teh App store

Moving Data from old hard drive to new hard drive

I'm posting this question in this category , I hope it's the right place. Here's my situation and general information. I have a Toshiba L35 S2161 laptop, it's about 5 yrs old, running WinXP Service Pack 3. just got the blue screen, wouldn't boot, tried everything and I only have the factory provided "recovery" disc that will wipe my drive and lose all my data if I use it. I hadn't been doing regular backups, so I want to save as much if not all of my data as I can. I don't want to spend time here going over everything I've tried (boot disc like Knoppix, etc) which didn't work, just need to get to the bottom line and make sure I'm doing the next steps correctly.
Here's my plan:
l. Remove old hard drive from laptop
2. purchase new hard drive - I've been told any drive will work, it doesn't have to be designed for a Toshiba. I've been looking at best prices, etc. mainly Western Digital. I may purchase a larger drive to at least get more memory , although I really didn't have that much on my old drive, but had a lot of apparent memory-related problems, freezes, etc.
3. Install new blank drive into laptop, using the Toshiba factory recovery disc to reformat the disc and get it ready to receive the data.
4. Insert the recovery disc into the drive, turn on the computer and HOPE that it boots it up and installs a fresh install on the new drive. Not sure what the screen willl show at this point - I've never installed a new drive in a laptop, so will be somewhat nervous at this point to see what happens.
5. Assuming the new drive is recognized by the recovery disc and installs a clean version of WIN XP (I'm assuming that's what's on the recovery disc that came with my computer, because it had WIN XP pre-installed), I will now be ready to transfer data from the old drive.
6. This is the step I'm not sure what or how to do next. I would like to clone my entire old drive onto the new drive but I'm afraid if I do that it might load damaged files that would mess up my new install. I purchased a disc enclosure with a USB cable (haven't received it yet), and was going to use that somehow. I presume I will plug it in and it will show up as an external drive and I can access that drive and transfer my priority files or data first and then try to transfer as much more as I can....
I need further help and information about this last step...the critical data transfer method. There are cloning kits that are plug and play and would transfer my entire system as it was before the blue screen, but again, I'm concerned about transferring everything onto a clean install and finding myself with a computer that won't boot again because it transferred a bad file. Also, would it overwrite or interfere with the clean install on the new drive? I'm stuck at this point....hopefully someone out there can walk me through this final step with the best option for transfer. I'm trying to avoid purchasing pricey software like Acronis (which I looked at online and it seemed difficult to use, to figure out what to transfer).
My laptop is obviously out of warranty, being five years old, and I am not interested in taking it in to repair tech, I want to do this myself and I think I can with a few helpful tips. Thanks for any help asap...

The error message I received on the blue screen was "unmountable boot volume" which leads me to believe i have a corrupted MBR. This fiasco happened when I turned off my computer when it was running a program (I know, bad thing to do).
I'm waiting on a new hard drive with a 120 GB (my old drive was 80GB). I was told not to go above 120 or I'd have partition problems.
The SATA drive enclosure powers up the old drive (I can hear the disc spinning) so the disc isn't dead. If I''d have the full retail vesion of WinXP I would of course have used the recovery console, but I only had the toshiba recovery disc that came with my system. Also, I couldn't burn a CD boot disc...didn't have access to another computer nor would a tech friend do it for me as he apparently made a disc for someone and their system crashed so I had no choice but to buy a new drive and try to transfer the data via the SATA external drive/usb cable.
My big question now is: Will the Toshiba recovery disc actually reformat my new drive? Someone on another forum with a Toshiba laptop had purchased a new drive, used the recovery disc and the cd just went into a constant loop and never went into a full install. I'm thinking that maybe on a new drive there isn't enough knowledge base there for the recovery disc to install and reformat a new disc. That would be a bummer because then I'd have no choice but to purchase a retail version of WinXP which I was hoping not to have to do. Thats' getting into some $$ when added to all the other thing I've tried to get this laptop up and running . (A Knoppix live CD boot disc didn't work either).
I don't know what service pack was on the old disc...possibly SP2, but if it was only SP1, I fear it's not going to have the ability to format a new disc. The disc does have drivers, etc. but the question is, are they able to install the OS. I was running XP3 when it crashed, so I know i would have to download that again. I just want to get the darned system back up and running with my new drive and restore disc. IF I can do that, then I'll try to transfer the data from the old drive via the external drive enclosure.
I also decided against the clone....I was afraid I'd be cloning a bad disc or errors onto a new drive, and didnt' want to stress a possibly wonky drive even more than it possibly is.
So, that's where I'm at now! Thanks so much for any further insight into this....something tells me the recovery disc isn't going to format my new drive but fingers crossed...more thoughts/feedback appreciated!

New Laptop, Old Hard Drive

I recently purchased a new laptop because the motherboard on my old laptop died. My old hard drive was fine however, and I have transferred all of my old files onto my new laptop. However, when I attempt to listen to one of the songs I purchased from iTunes, I get a message that says, "The song 'X' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" I am then required to go through the process of locating the file in my iTunes folder and double-cliking on it. This is time-consuming and every single song is marked with a "!" thus indicating that the file cannot be located. Please help me!

What that means about "song cannot be found" is the folder where u had that song has been moved. You have to find it & it should be in "My documents" if u already have successfully transferred it from your old computer. If not, then its lost. Thats the one thing I really hate about it.

How to move files from old hard drive with SATA dock?

I just upgraded my hard drive and now need to transfer the data from the old hard drive to the new. I was told to use a SATA dock but I am not quite sure how to use one. I thought it best to either find out how to use one or find out if there is a better way rather than going about it on my own. How do I solve this quandry?

Now, from your old hard drive, go to your old itunes folder, and drag each artists folder into itunes. You can do it all at once if you have a few artists, but there have been reports of itunes locking up if too much is being is being imported at once

G5 not recognize sata 2.0 internal hard drive

My Seagate 500 GB harddrive is failing and sometimes will not boot.   The Smart test using TechTools Pro 6.0 shows it passing all the tests but several test the marker is a third of the way toward fail.    This drive must have structure problems that I can't fix.
I purchased a new Western Digital Caviar HD   7200 2.0 Terabite hard drive.   The Mac Pro will not recognize the drive internally.   I formated it on a windows machine and the hooked it to my Mac Book Pro (Intell based) as an external drive. I formated it and partitioned it under the Apple Partition standard rather than GUID per instructions on WD's website.   The Mac Book Pro and the Mac G5 both recognize the Caviar drive as an external drive but the G5 does not recognize the drive internally to install my operating system. I reversed the other Time Machine drive to be sure there wasn't a wiring problem in the Hard Drive enclosure.   The Time Machine Harddrive (Hitachi 750 HD) works in both.
I can not find if there is an issue of the size of the Hard Drive. I'm using Leopard with the Power PC chip in the G5.
Any ideas ????

Again, I have spend several weeks working on the hard drive issue.   Neither the old hard drive nor the new replacement are recognized by the internal slot.   Both are recognized as external harddrives.
I had a second hard drive, Hitatchi, that I used Super Duper to clone the old Seagate. It now seems to work. I used Tech Tool Pro 6 to clean up the volume as much as I could.   The disk utility still finds some issues on SUID but I guess they are not the cause from other posts I have read concerning disk permissions.
I reset the PRAM and SMU.
I am reluctant to buy a third hard drive if the internal board does not recognize the hard disk. I have run the tests in Tech Tool Pro 6 but nothing is indicated as a problem.
Does anyone have a clue what is going on regarding hard drives and the Power Mac G5??
PS I used the external connection to do all the hard drive tests and optimization of the old Seagate 500 GB HD. It seems to be ok and working fine.   The super duper clone was a pain because the program would frequently hang even though I was not using the power mac G5 to externally connect the two. I used my Mac Book Pro to connect the external Seagate 500 HD to the Power mac G5 Hitatchi in Target mode. It was a long drawn out process but it seems to have worked.   I just don't know if the Power Mac G5 is stable enough to spend more money on still another hard drive.

I want to do this because when I imported from my old hard drive there was an error message stating that 12 photos were not imported as the programm did not recognise the format even though they were jpegs like the other photos in that particular album. The dates of the photo folders are wrong I have multiple copies of photos and every time I start iPhoto I get the following message 12 photos have been found in the iPhoto library that were not imported would you like to import them No or Yes
if you press Yes the same message comes back again and if you press Yes again the program flicks to last import for 2 seconds and then opens events.
if you press No the message The photos have been placed in the folder/user/judith/pictures/iphoto Library recovered photos then if you press OK the original message 12 photos have been found.............
if you press No at this point the message The photos have been placed in the folder/user /judith/pictures/iphoto Library recovered photos_11 the end number goes up by 1 every time you go through this process

Did you import an iPhoto Library from the old Hard Drive? Do you still have that old Library?
The way to clear out a Library is to Export the photos - Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
For the annoying start-up message:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Look there for a Folder called 'Import' or 'Importing'.
Drag it to the Desktop. *Make no other changes*.
Start iPhoto. Does that help?
If it does then look inside that folder on your desktop. Does it contain anything you want? If not you can trash the folder.

I have replaced my old hard drive on a MacBook Pro midyear 2010 with a new SSD drive. I have a complete system backup of my old drive in an external hard drive using Time Machine.
Questions that I would like to get answered.
1) Can I connect my external hard drive to the macbook pro and use that to boot up my machine by pressing and holding down the Options key? Once booted up successfully, can I use Disk Utility to format the new SSD and then restore the complete time machine backup?
2) If that is not possible, can I use my old drive which I can connect using a USB adapter and use that to boot up by following the same strategy as listed in Step#1 above?
3) If neither options are possible, do I need to use a bootable USB drive for Mavericks OS X to boot up the machine,
I have Mavericks OS X ( 10.9.6) and I do not have a DVD of the OS.
Any help is appreciated.

Let me first document the steps that did not work and then I will document the steps that worked.
1) Replaced the hard drive with SSD.
2) Connected the original hard drive using a USB adapter to the MacBook to make it behave like an external device.
3) Powered on the machine and on hearing the chime pressed Command-R to start in recovery mode.
4) Chose the Disk Utility option to erase and format the SSD. The format chosen was Mac OS Extended Journaled.
5) Once the formatting was done, then clicked on the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility
6) In the Source field, dragged my original hard drive from the left pane and placed it in the field
7) On the destination field, choose the new SSD drive. Clicked on "Restore". Gave me a warning, accepted the warning and the restore was under way.
8) I had 236 GB to restore so took 3.5 hours before it was done.
9) Disconnected the external hard drive ( my original internal HDD), shut down the machine and powered on again.
10) Heard the chime and after that it was a white screen with no Apple logo.
Was visibly upset and started thinking what my next move will be. Then tried these steps
1) Again powered off the machine.
2) Connected my internal HDD once more as an external drive
3) Powered on and on hearing the chime, pressed Command-R as before
4) Once the OS X utilities screen popped up, this time chose Install OS X
5) Erased the contents of SSD once more and reformatted it using Mac OS Extended Journaled.
6) Installed OS X by following the prompts.
7) Once the OS was installed, I was presented with an option on how to transfer data to this new Mac
8) Chose the option to move the data from my original HDD.
9) Took another 3 hours to move the data.
10) Removed the original HDD once the transfer was complete, powered down the machine and started it once more.
11) Booted successfully and all my content is now accessible on the new SSD.
Moral of the story - It is the spirit that counts.
