Dv6910us shuts off within seconds-minutes

Hello. I have owned my Pavilion dv6910us for a year and a half. This evening, I sprayed some compressed air into the vents to dislodge some dust from the fans. I did this before about a year ago when my fans began to run loudly. Please note that the computer was turned off and unplugged when I did this
When I started the computer again, it booted up and I got to open my Firefox browser before the computer shut off without warning. Now I can't get the computer up to the vista startup screen. It usually gets to the screen where it tells me that my computer was not properly shut down before turning off.
I noticed that the fan that usually starts when I boot up no longer turns on. I can hear the hard drive booting up, however. The computer remains cool and everything. I'm pretty sure I did something when I sprayed the compressed air into the vents. What can I do to remedy this?
I will also mention. that I installed some vista updates right before I shut the computer down to spray it. I'm not sure if this is an issue. I was also having problems with the computer intermittently going from AC to battery power even though the computer remained plugged in.
I'll appreciate any help. Thanks.

UPDATE: The computer stays on now, but the fan isn't working at all. I used HWMonitor and the temperatues were around 80 degrees celsius. I'm sure that's not a good temperature.

  • My Macbook Pro shuts off within 5 minutes when just using the battery..why?

The problem started a while ago, but I never much payed attention to it because I kept the laptop on my desk and connected to the wall. But it started around a year and half ago, when I disconnect my computer from the power source, it might last a little over an hour, depending on what I am doing. Now, if I unplug it it may last 5 minutes if I am lucky. I heard something about a battery recall, or something to that tune, but have no idea. I am a novice when it comes to battery's or whatever. Please help all you can. This problem is very annoying, because as a college student, it is nice to be able to take your laptop with you to class and not worry about 5 minutes later it just dies. Ill be more than happy to answer questions about how I use the laptop, etc. I have also listed some information below to help. Thank you for your help.

Your battery is showing pretty low capacity considering the cycle count, have you been re-calibrating it every couple of months as you should ?
Reset the SMC (System Management Controller) and re-calibrate the Battery properly then see how it behaves.

11 days later I'm still waiting to get my macbook back. Hope you can get it faster!
Very disapointed with the support quality and product quality.

  • Firefox shuts down within seconds of opening

Firefox shuts down within seconds of opening any web page.
Same problem in Firefox safe mode.
    I have unchecked hardware acceleration.
I have uninstalled, removed all data files, deleted all profiles and reinstalled Firefox.
    Internet Explorer works fine.

I recently began to experience this same problem. There are many, many reports of this same trouble all over the web. Why is it that when so many people report having the same problem tech support asks each user to perform trouble shooting. The firefox team should instead look for the fault within the firefox program.

  • Need help fixing video shut off after 2 minutes in non-windows mode

Good morning experts in this forum,  I need your help solving a hardware/firmware problem of my computer. I have a Hpe 250f computer with Radeon 5700 series video card on it.  I recently noticed one strange problem which prevents me from doing any meaningful work in non-windows mode: The video will be shut off after around 2 min if the computer is not in Windows mode.  This includes BIOs mode and recovery mode.  There is no problem if the computer logs on Windows within 2 minutes.  But if I stay in BIOs settings or try to use HP diagnostics or try to recover a backup using windows backups for around 2 min, the monitor will turn blank and the power button of monitor will turn yellow from green indicating no video output to it.  It can not wake up by mouse or keyboard. I read that older BIOs have problem with fan speed and I reflashed the BIOs.   But it did not work. This problem drives me mad since I had occasional hard drive failures recently and I could not recover my system (That is why I noticed the problem recently, but the problem could have existed when I bought the computer).  Now the computer is out of warrenty and I could not find any similar case using Google search.  I really appreaciate your help. Thanks

I had the same problem when I upgraded.  In my case it definitely was the power supply.  In my effort to figure out the problem by swapping components in and out, the dieing power supply killed 2 P8P67 Pro and 2 2500k, and when I tested with the P67A-GD65, the power supply totally died, but the good thing is that the GD65 survived.  Swapped in a 430W to test and everything was perfect.  At full load with GTX260, it will draw less than 300W, so your power supply is fine to test.

  • IPhone keeps shutting off every 30 minutes w/ full battery

Ever since I updated to 2.0, my iPhone has been randomly powering off completely.
The only way to turn it back on is to hold down the Home and Power (top) button for a few seconds, and then the Apple symbol comes up.
    Any ideas?

I think I am having a similar problem. I have the new iPhone 3G.
My screen shuts off (the screen turns black, but the phone is still on...like if you shut the monitor off on a desktop PC while the tower is still on) randomly which requires me to do a hard reset (holding the sleep button at the top of the phone and the home button at the same time until the Apple logo appears).
This happens without warning when I do the following:
    1. During a call, when I need to use the keypad, put a call on hold, activate speakerphone, etc. the screen will stay black and will not turn on when I touch it. This means I can't even end a call unless the caller hangs up. It is clear that the phone is still on (I can hear the caller at the other end), but I cannot use the screen at all. The screen comes back on when I put the phone back up to my ear, but then when I pull it away to touch the screen it goes black again.
    2. After I complete a call, the screen will shut off before I can press the "end call" button. Even after the call is terminated from the other end, I cannot make the screen come back on.
    3. After the screen automatically goes to sleep (goes black), I cannot make it come back on.
In all 3 of these instances, I use a hard reset to make the screen come back on. In the first instance that I listed, I have to do a hard reset during the call in order to disconnect the call and get the screen to come back on.
These problems do not happen during/after every single call. For example, sometimes it will be after one call, other times it will be after five calls. It happens without warning and without reason. It is very inconvenient because I am resetting my phone several times a day. When I call customer service lines (for any company), I can't use the keypad to do things such as "Press 1 for English" without doing a hard reset in the middle of the call and calling back several times until it works.
I would really appreciate it if you could offer some advice on how to fix this problem.
    Thank you.

  • KT4 Ultra Powers Off within Seconds of Power Up

Ok, here's the situation... this board powers down everytime within seconds of powering up, usually even before the video card can POST, although I have seen it POST a couple times.
I believe I've ruled out every possibility but the board...  I've got the board out of the case on it's box, and the only thing connected is the CPU, the video card, the power switch cable. and a CPU fan, which is using the power supply for power, not the board.
I have tried 2 different power supplies, 2 different video cards, 2 different processors, 2 different power cords, 2 different outlets, and using the reset button to power the board up (in case the pickup in the power switch was sticky).  I've tried 2 different RAM modules, as well as removing the RAM entirely, and clearing the CMOS... everytime, it's the same result, it powers itself off right away.
I know everything points the board being bad, but I had an ASUS board that was doing this identical thing because of the thermal protection circuitry, I could clear the CMOS to get to the BIOS, and then disable thermal protection.  It doesn't look like that's going to work here, but I thought I'd post this anyway, and see if anyone has any suggestions...

Ok... well, I feel a little dumb admitting this, but I suppose if it helps someone else down the road, it's worth it.
Problem solved... and the resolution was so simple I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't just seen it.  I cleaned off my heatsink, and the cpu core, and reapplied new thermal grease to both, then made sure the heatsink was fit as tightly as I possibly could... and voila... no more problem.
I will admit, that the heatsink I was a Swiftech unit off an old Duron CPU, and in my haste, I didn't clean it before using it again.  I never imagined that these things could overheat so quickly, but let that be a lesson to those of you like me who haven't built a machine in the last 2 years or so.  I guess the heatsink working was just something I took somewhat for granted.
Thanks to those of you who took time to try and help... hopefully my lesson will help one of you.

  • MBP shuts off hard after minutes

I have a macbook pro that is a little over a year old. The battery up to this point has been really spectacular... better than any of my past macbooks. Of course there has been a little decay in battery life, but nothing substantial.
Until the other day. I was operating at about 50% power and the computer just SHUT DOWN. No warning or anything... it just shut off hard. It has done this several times since, all at about 50% power. Then last night it shut off at 88% power.
Is this a battery issue or something more severe with the computer? It has also been coming awake even when closed, so when I come back in the morning the computer is very hot.

Hi, Robert. Contrary to your past experience, it's commonplace for a failing lithium battery not to give any low-battery warning, and then to exhaust its last iota of charge so abruptly that the machine it's powering just shuts down instead of going to sleep. If your battery is two years old and its 56 cycles have been very evenly distributed, every two weeks or so, then it's strange for the battery to be failing now as it seems to be doing. If the battery is three years old, or if it has ever been run on AC power for periods of many weeks or months without cycling, then its failure is pretty much to be expected.
A battery that doesn't get exercised enough may retain a high Full Charge Capacity (like yours), but develop so much internal resistance that it can't push its stored energy out efficiently to connected devices. I'm guessing that's the state of affairs in your battery. And I don't know exactly how the low battery warning system is activated, but it seems possible to me that you aren't getting a warning because your battery's remaining capacity actually isn't low, even when the computer shuts down for lack of power: only its output is low. If the system isn't designed to give a warning when the battery's capacity is high but its output is low, that would explain the lack of a warning in your case.

  • IPhone 4 shuts off randomly, will only turn on after hard boot, then shuts back off within 10 minutes

My iphone 4 just had its 30 pin port replaced and also i believe the battery was just replaced. It will only turn on with a hard start (Holding the wake/sleep + Home) then within the next 10 minutes it shuts back off. I have been trying to recovery mode restore it and it keeps having the problem. I am about to finish another recovery restore. Ill update if this fixes it.

Whoever replaced the port and the battery made an unauthorized repair, as Apple never replaces parts (except for the battery). Whoever did it broke your phone. Take it back to them, as Apple will no longer touch it.
