Dv7-3079wm BD/DVD/CD drive grinding sound won't read CD-R data discs help!

Hello, I have a dv7-3079wm, Windows 7 64bit notebook.  The optical drive inside is a hp BDDVDRW CT10L ATA Device YC09. Driver details: Provider Microsoft. Driver version 6.1.7600.16385. Driver Date 6/21/2006.  I have run searches for any new firmware and/or drivers and nothing comes up no matter where I attempt to see if new ones are available.  Here is problem I am experiencing:   When I insert a CD-R data disc or CD-RW data disc into optical drive it doesn't just make that happy spinning sound and open up the disc.  It makes a grinding noise, seems like it is trying to figure out what to do.  After much awful noise, it eventually just pops open and dialog box reads Please insert a disc.  This happens with CD-R/RW that are data (files, photos, pdf, docs, etc) that were burned on other computers (one person uses Nero for his burn software if that helps).  I have tried changing the AutoPlay settings to each of the choices available, including do nothing option.
This DOES NOT HAPPEN when I insert a DVD (I have autoplay to use Windows Media Player to view DVDs) and they open, play and no problems.  What can I do to make this work again?  It worked initially when I purchased the notebook, but suddenly started doing this.  The noise is scary, but doesn't seem to make the thing not work at all...just can't seem to identify the CD-R/RW disc at all and eventually just ejects the tray.  Please help me find out what I can do to fix this.  I thought maybe it is just autoplay settings but that doesn't seem to help.  Please help me.  I am not trying to BURN discs.  I am trying to put CD-R/RW data discs into the bloody thing so I can open and view them.  Please help.  Thank everyone who answers in advance for helping.

Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
Windows 7
Check if the drive will now read CDs.
If it still doesn't, click the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, click the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it is now able to read  CDs.

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

  • New Super Drive in iMac won't read DVD-R Data discs from windows machine.

Bought iMac 2.4 GHz 10/2007, the drive failed to burn DVD's about %70 of the time. Reading was very slow. Took to Apple Store in January, drive replaced. New drive burns and reads, except for TDK DVD-R data discs from my Sony Vaio (movies work). For these it gives alert "Blank DVD." When opened in finder it identifies media as a CD.
Someone had this problem earlier in the forum. No answer was posted. My Dell reads the dics fine. Stranger still, I hooked up an external LaCie 1394 DVD-R/RW+CD to the iMac to read the discs and got the same error. I hooked the same drive to my Dell and it read the same disc fine. Also, Dynex DVD+R and CD's work fine.
It does not seem to be a straight hardware issue. More like a device driver problem maybe?
Phone support suggested transferring all my data to DVD+R dics, but that is kind of a pain. Might upgrade to OS 10.5 help? Thanks

No suggestion but maybe some sharing of your misery. I bought a new 24" iMac 2.8 ghz on 2/24. Two hours after purchase, I put a DVD in the slot and nothing. Twenty five minutes with tech support, trying several different options to eject the disk, got me nowhere. They told me I would have to bring the machine in for repair. I did that, and magically, the DVD player is recognized when he (at the Apple store) boots the machine and it ejects the disk. He said the machine was fine. I said that it wasn't if I had to take the computer for a ride in my truck every time the optical drive doesn't work.
I'm waiting for a diagnostic to be run but I have my doubts about support in this area. I believe that Apple will say that they found nothing wrong and it's user error (not hardly, but it's probably easier than fixing the bug with the optical drives). This is my first ride with a Mac and I expected it to be wonderful. It's not a very smooth ride so far.

  • My cd/dvd drive makes sounds as if reading a disc, but there is no disc in it

    See title.
This occurs once every few minutes. I have never used the cd/dvd drive in the few days I own this laptop.

    Hey Lewistrick
This is probably normal. Sometimes, Windows or security software may try to access the drive for some reason, so the drive will "check" if there is a disc in there by moving things and making a slight sound.
As long as the notebook and the optical drive works normally otherwise, then there's nothing wrong with your unit! Good news!

  • Drive Mounts But Won't Open (10.3.9) - Please help.

    Hi,
I have been using 10.3.9 on my dual 1 GHz Quicksilver, very stablely for the past year.
Today, I clicked on one of my 2 internal drives (not the one with the System folder) icon on the desktop, and first a small window opens, then a couple seconds later, this window expands into a large window, and then disappears. The windows are empty (none of my precious files are visible)! This same problem happens to my external FW400 Lacie drive as well. Only the internal drive with the System folder is functioning normally.
Here's a twist. I am able to view the contents of both problematic drives using the Finder directory. I am also able to open & copy the files, so I know the hard drives are physically sound and mechanically functioning.
I should add that I have done nothing differently today when encountering the problem. I've tried shutting down and restarting to no avail.
Is there something in OS 10.3.9 to remedy this problem (eg drive prefs) etc? I didn't think I need to repair the drives as they work fine through the Finder.
    Thanks for your helpful advice!

    Dear Cine Alter,
If the two drives are appearing on your desktop that would suggest physical connections are OK. If you have not already done so, start up from you OSX CD and rebuild your directory. Then rebuild Permissions, Restart and see how you go. This process should clean up any directory corruptions which may be responsible for the problem. You should run both of these programs monthly to ensure corruptions do not creep into your system.
If the problem persists restart from OSX CD and try un-mounting and re-mounting each disk with Disk First Aid. Restart and see how you go.
    Good Luck,
    Tony

  • Drives Burn, but won't read newly burned disk

I've got two sony super drives, they are burning seemingly ok, but when I eject the disk and put it back in the computer tells me I've inserted a blank disk.
I can see the data burned into the disk, so I know there's something on the disk, but what's going on with my drives? It's both drives, so that leads me to believe that it's a software issue, not a bad drive.

I have posted on another section, but here are my comments repeated.
My dual disk drive fails to read some of my backup DVDs, which is a irritating. I have used a DVD cleaner, by the way. They were burnt on the machine originally and have been read in the past by both drives. I fitted 2 drives for just this sort of eventuality – and to do 2 backups at the same time, so I don't believe it is drive failure. I can restart the machine and occasionally they will read, but often not. I reduced the speed of burn from x16 down to x12 to see if it made a difference, but that is fairly inconcusive. The disks are stored 2-up in individual crystal cases, so scratching from sleeves shouldn't be a problem.
The disks fortunately CAN be read on my wife's old iMac, so I can network the data across.
Interestingly, some of the DVDs used are unbranded (plain white for printing), but some are 'Imation' brand. I would note that 'Tesco' (supermarket brand) DVD+R disks appear to be satisfactory at recalling data, for the time being.
The conclusion I draw is that it is down to the quality of the disks that are used. Don't necessarily go for bargain spindles of unbranded disks for valuable backups, although I cannot definitely say that branded ('Imation' in my case) disks will guarantee your backup security.
Judging by the lack of input on this message board on this subject, this may not be a widespread problem, but I would be interested to know if there is a definitive fix out there or if anyone can comment.

  • Macbook pro Hard drive replacement issue, won't read new drive.

I have a Macbook pro Core 2 Duo. The 2nd generation Macbook pro. I am trying to install a 640GB Western Digital Scorpio Blue hard drive. I have formatted the new drive to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with the GUID table though an external USB enclosure. I have installed OSX from the CD's onto this new drive and can boot from it externally. When I install it internally and try to boot I get a gray screen with a stop sign (circle with a line through it). If I boot from the install CD and use disk utility the compter sees the drive as 4.6TB and can't format it.
Why would this drive work in an external enclosure but not internally?
I can boot from the drive so it should be good.
My original HDD works in the computer so the connections should all be good.
I am confused. Any help that can be offered would be appreciated.

Is the 640GB WD approved as an internal drive for your MBP? If it is, then the clean, formatted drive with no OSX should be installed in the MBP. Then start up (holding the "Option" key) from the OSX installation disc and install OSX. After a successful installation, the MBP will restart. Then run Software Update to get the latest version of OSX.

  • My new imac won't read all the data on my dvd r

I burned some photos onto a DVD R using Nero on Windows XP.
My new mac will read the disk and some of it's contents but not all???
    Any ideas?

It could depend on what format the content is that is not readable - if you have access to the Windows machine, you could check on the format (and/or know the format if you burned it)? Is it just .jpeg's? Or did you make a slideshow resulting in an mpg2 possibly? In that case, you'd need to buy the MPEG2 Playback Component from the Apple Store (less than $20) because Quicktime can't read that format without the playback component.
Can the DVD be played in a regular DVD player?

  • Made a DVD with iDVD and Windows won't read it.

Says "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer. Does anyone know how I can get an iDvd DVD to work on Windows machines? Thanks for any help.

    Hi
Does any commersial DVDs play in Your PC ? If so the iDVD one should do so too.
    What use to help is
    • Use a Good brand - Not NoName or Memorex - I only use Verbatim
    • I use DVD-R (as they play on more players - even old ones)
    • in iDVD Pref I set down burn speed to x4 - LESS Burn Errors ! Important !

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
It happens with "burned" CDs? What brand are you using? You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #88275 on Troubleshooting the slot load disc drive (Portables).

  • DVD+R not reading back on some DVD-ROM drives

The recording device is the built-in SuperDrive on my iBook G4 1.42. I've been archiving copies of my photos to recordable DVD. It's usually 2 copies of each set - one in DVD+R and one in DVD-R. I store each set in a different place.
My preferred media is (Made in Japan) Taiyo-Yuden media sold under the FujiFilm and Sony label. So far, the spindles I've opened and used are the FujiFilm (8x-listed) DVD+R (regular silver label) and DVD-R (from the "Color Tower" package).
The DVD-R recordings seem to read back fine in most DVD-ROM drives I've tried. I have a circa 2001 PC with a DVD-ROM drive, and it doesn't read back the DVD+R copies. It'll just whirr for about 20 seconds and then just stop without the disc mounting. All DVD recordings seem to read back just fine on my iBook G3 600.
Are there any known problems with readback of DVD+R recorded from OS X on some DVD-ROM drives? I figure I'm eventually going to get an external drive that also records DVD+R (I'm thinking that would present the fewest compatibility problems) or a new machine (it's about time after five years).
    14 iBook G4 1.42 1.5GB (10.4.3), 12 iBook G3 600 640MB (10.3.9)

Just a note of interest. If your machine is 2001
vintage, my guess it doesn't like + media at all.
There are some reports that in some cases that these
older drives can read them sporaticlly at best, this
is normally caused by the poor quality of some
    manufactures.
It's a Sony VAIO desktop with a Pioneer DVD-ROM drive. I don't know about "quality" per se, but it probably finicky.
I find that using the best quality media eliminates
many problems. And I realise that it is more
expensive to use this media but in the long run it's
    worth the extra money.
Have a look at the Media Guide below.
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
    Cheers Don
Like I said - Taiyo Yuden all the way unless it's maybe sometime like video storage where it's no big deal. I just got three spindles of MIJ (had to look carefully for that) Sony 16x DVD-R for $12.99 each at CompUSA. They didn't have it on sale, but they price-matched the $12.99 price at Best Buy (my local store only had made in Taiwan stock). I was next to the manager at the customer service area, and she said I could have as many as I wanted at that price. If it were some expensive item, I think I would have been limited to one or two.

  • Dvd burn only creates data disc

recently I succesfully created an SD DVD which I first built and then formatted to a DVD. this disc played perfectly in my dvd player.
after this success I went ahead and created a new DVD but this time with HD footage (I changed the settings to HD in the preferences before starting the new project), and after following all of the same steps after formatting the dvd it is only read as a data disc in my dvd player.
studio pro shows "formatting succesfull" when finished in all cases
    can anyone fill me in?
(as a side note.. when first creating the SD dvd, simply pressing the burn button also only created a data disc. it wasn't until I first built it and then formatted it that the dvd would play properly in my player)
    thanks

    Welcome to the boards
HD Discs will not play on regular SD players so when you changed to HD in the preferences it probably caused the issue
HD footage needs to be converted to SD m2v.
You must build your project before formatting the project, so if you formatted without a proper build somehow that could also cause a problem.
