Dv7-3160us - Mounting kit for 2nd Hard Drive

Hello,
Sorry if the answer is posted elsewhere. I have looked and cannot find one specifically for my model.
I have a dv7-3160us, which has the secondary drive bay.
I have a second WD 500GB SATA bare drive.
Where can I find information on obtaining both a mounting bracket and the appropriate cable to mount this bare drive in the secondary drive bay?
I was on the phone with HP tech supp, and even after almost 30 minutes of trying to explain what I needed he still didn't have a clue and kept telling me it ALREADY had a 500GB hard drive in it...... :-) Enough of that.
Any help appreciated.

I ask because I also have a G4 and there is a limit on the size that it will accept.

It might be, that the the person who told me this, meant this for 3TB external drives. Because here http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=17109770#post17109770 you see, that it doesn't work internally in a G4.

  • Cable for 2nd Hard Drive bay for HP ENVY 17

Hello everyone! I wanted to ask a question. I own an HP ENVY 17-J075EZ, and inside it there are two slots for hard disk including the primary already used from the hard disk ... Because I wanted to put a SSD but always keep the HDD, I wanted to know what it's called the second cable to connect a second hard drive and possibly the price and where to buy it! Thanks in advance!

  • Dv7t rcvd. new 4/6/2011 need interface cable for 2nd hard drive

Subject rcvd from HP with caddy for 2nd hdd installed. No cable supplied.  called HP parts store and was referred to sales and then referred to tech support.  After several hours of chat and musical hold time I'm still without for a source for  a much wanted interface ,Hdd to motherboard, cable. No help from newmodeus.com either.  This is not a standard
esata cable and has to be an exact fit for allocated space.  If desired to install  SSD in this model an exact fit is needed.

My dv7t is in the mail and I have not got it yet, I asked support via email how to add a second hard drive and they said you just plug it in, I was skeptical and now that I see this post I can see I was right to be.
So I would also like to know how to add a second HDD or SSD to the dv7t and how to get all the necessary parts.
    Please Help!

  • Hard drive mounting kit for DV7T series laptop

I recently bought a HP DV7T series laptop from HP.  It has a 2nd hard drive bay so I can increase my storage by adding a 2nd hard drive.  The trouble I am having is actually getting the part needed to mount the drive.  I need the 2 mounting rails and the e-sata cable which is in the kit part number 517639-001.  This kit includes the mounting rails, e-SATA interface cable, and mounting screws. The trouble is HP parts says that the product is not available, but tech support says they can get it for me for $400!?!  That's a 3rd of the price of the laptop and it is only for 2 rails, some screws, and a cable.  Does anyone know where I can get this part?  Or contact information for someone at HP that could help with this.  Parts and tech support did not think the $400 price tag for that was overkill.  I tried asking for a manager, but all the rep would do was put me on hold and "relay" answers.  Final word was I need to contact a 3rd party.  This is a new laptop, less than a week old; I find it hard to believe that HP does not have the part.

You could try Amazon, eBay, CraigsList, etc.  The usual warnings apply:  Check the reseller ratings, don't deal with anyone that does not offer a return policy (don't shop with anyone whose post says "All sales are final"), and pay only with a credit card so that you can reverse charges in worst case scenario.

  • How to add a 2nd hard drive to HP Pavilion DV7!

How to add a 2nd hard drive to HP Pavilion DV7-3165DX, product # WA794UA or WA794UAR.
    (1) Order HDD, hard drive, hardware kit. HDD hardware kit includes mounting rails, static shield, screws, rubber isolators, and SATA to motherboard cable. Check your model & Product # for compatibility.
         HP Parts HDD hardware kit 517639-001 for DV7-3165DX product# WA794UA and WA794UAR.
    (2) Consult Drives - Windows 7 PDF, table of contents, 7 Replacing a drive in the secondary hard drive bay. This will show you how to install a 2nd HDD in a HP DV7.
          Drives - Windows 7 PDF
    (3) In Windows 7 select Computer, Select the HDD installed, Format (if not already formatted).
    (4) If HDD does not show up in Windows 7 under Computer, go to Start (Menu), Search Programs and Files, enter "Computer Management", select Storage, Disk Management (Local), look for the Bay 2 HDD (should show up as Disc 1, Bay 1 HDD should show as Disc 0), Format the 2nd HDD (The one you just installed).
Update: I have the 2nd HDD (WD 1TB) installed, Windows now recognises it after completing the steps I mentioned in step 4, Format with default allocation NTFS 931.51GB free, 118MB used for formatting. Format with default allocation exFAT 931.51GB free, 1MB used for formatting. I selected NTFS format to reduce file fragmenting.

When i added my 2nd HDD I was ready to get it ordered and shipped, so it would arrive before I arrived home. I also was not sure if it would be offered anywhere else and be 100% compatible. The quality of the factory HP part is good. Since then I found a cheeper source. Newmodeus DV7-3xxx Hard Drive Caddy $27.95 +tax +shipping. Not sure if the quality is the same. If this helps you, post your results and kudos.

  • HP envy dv7 2nd hard drive cable

    Hi all,
I recently purchased the HP ENVY dv7-7201sa, and was quite disappointed to find out that the 2nd hard drive caddy space did not come with a SATA cable to connect a secondy hard drive.
I have been unable to locate an appropriate cable, and was wondering if anyone knows where I would be able to purchase one? (I purchased the HP Pavillion version hoping this would fit, but the connction to the motherboard is smaller in the Envy model).
Really hoping someone would be able to help me.
    Thank you very much

  • 2nd hard drive for HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Notebook - What do I need?

Hi, I have the HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 CTO Select Edition Entertainment Notebook (Product # WV703AV). It has room for two harddrives but only came with one. What would I need in order to install the second hard drive? Would I need just a connecting cable or do I also need caddy or kit?
Also, could I get a solid state? Would my notebook support that or does it only use regular ones?
    Currently, I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I've got a 500GB hd (which came partitioned with hp tools/recovery).
Any help with what I would need for a traditional hdd or ssd would be greatly appreciated. I tried to look through other people's posts first,  but couldn't find anything specific to my model. Thanks for your time!

    Hi:
The only place I know of where you can get a 2nd hard drive kit is from this vendor.
    http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=345
Your notebook should be able to work with a SSD but I cannot guarantee it.
I really don't see any point in adding a SSD unless you make it the primary hard drive, and in order to do that, you would need to get a SSD the same size as the original 500 GB hard drive to use the recovery disks to reinstall the operating system.
Most folks get smaller SSD's and they use the W7 product key to activate a plain installation of W7.
If you can read all 25 characters of your windows 7 product key you can make your own installation media and use that to install Windows on a smaller than 500 GB SSD.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

  • Looking for a 2nd hard drive on DV9700

I want to add a 2nd hard drive to my HP dv9728ca. Are there any specs I should look for? Right now I have a 160GB hd, and the manual ( http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01295898.pdf ) seems to indicate my only choices are 120GB or 160GB. According to the service manual, if I want a 200GB or 250GB, I can't use my 160GB anymore. The possible options are as follows : 250x2 (5400), 200x2 (4200), 160x2 (5400), 160+120 (5400), 120x2 (5400 or 7200, but both the same). Now I've upgraded computers before, even built some from scratch, and I've never seen this type of requirement. Is this for real? I've read a post from someone saying he had trouble with his new drive which was bigger than his original one. What about the 1.5GB/sec vs 3.0GB/sec? My understanding is that the 3.0 is downward compatible, but some seem to pretend you have to set a jumper on the drive to bring it down to 1.5. Any help would be appreciated. And what if I add a 7200rpm drive instead of 5400rpm? I don't see how these should cause any trouble, but from looking around it seems HP motherboards are very specific as to what they'll let you do. I already purchased the caddy kit, all I need is the hard drive, but I don't want to end up with one that's not compatible.
If anyone's added an additional hard drive to a dv9700 series laptop, please let me know what model you chose (brand, capacity vs what you had, 5400/7200, 8MB/16MB).

Hi, I have dv9730ca laptop myself and I have 2 160GB seagate 5400rpm 8MB hdd's, they have an external data transfer rate of 300MB/sec and an internal data transfer rate of 1.1GB/sec. They do get up to around 55oC (i use cpuid - hwmonitor to check this out) and I have heard using the 7200rpm hdd's can increase the heat output so I would recommend using the 5400rpm hdd's instead. The best way I have found to get over the heat issue from any laptop is to use a targus chillmat, it has 2 fans and runs off a usb port. I hope this info helps you out

  • DV7-6c90us 2nd hard drive issues and AMD Radeon Issues

    The Problem:
1)My AMD card has always been flakey and I've tried multiple times to uninstall it permanently and can't, it won't let me. I want to remove it completely since I'd rather have access to the extra hard drive than the graphics card.
    2) when the card is working then my 2nd HDD won't work, but when the AMD card isn't working then my 2nd HDD works
    What I'm Working with:
    HP DV7-6c90us
    Intel Core i7 2670qm chip
16GB of RAM (I added them, Kensington 1666MHz system underclocked to 1333MHz since that's what the i7 maxes out at)
Then whatever obscure AMD Radeon graphics card came with my system.
    Windows 8 Pro
2nd HDD is a 1TB Segate Momentum drive, I pretty much took it from a Travel Drive and put it in my latop
Using the standard power brick that came with my laptop (120W)  and battery is almost always at 50% or better)
The laptop is just over a year old (got it 06/08/2012 from HH Gregg)
    What I've done:
Checked to make sure the 2nd HDD is installed correctly, it is and is plugged in to port two. It shows up in BIOS, but when you try to test it BIOS hangs. It's not corrupt since when it does decide to work, it works without any issues. It even works when I plug in my USB 3.0 adapter and use it as an external drive. That's not really an option since I am constantly transfering and managing that hard drive so it would be too much of an inconvenience.
I tried uninstalling AMD Radeon completely, but can't. I used a site that showed me what to delete from registry, Program File (x86), User App Data (Local and Roaming), and tried to uninstall it through "Programs and Features" under Control Panel (the Catalyst software). At every reboot it comes back like a virus. I don't need it, nor do I want it since the performance is so spotty and has always been, I do need the 2nd hard drive working again since i use it much more than I do AMD.

You will not like the answer but RAID is not possible on that machine. HP does have RAID function on some of the business models but the Pavilion is a consumer model and they have never had a RAID option on consumer models that I know about. Even if you could set up a RAID-0 array it would wipe out the data on the first drive and you would have to reinstall Windows from scratch and when you do a RAID-0 even on machines that permit it the two drives generally need to be identical, not just similar or the same size.
how is it then that some hp models ship with 2 HDD's but show up as one then eg there is a pavilion that is almost identical to mine sorry i don't know the model # but even more recent there are envy models that have this. or do they actually show as separate drives?

  • 2nd hard drive buying suggestions for FCE?

I have a 2Ghz dual G5. When downloading HiDef footage from my videocam to FCE 3.5, I about run out of space.
I was thinking of adding a 2nd hard drive.....plenty seem to get an external firewire, but I dread more desk space taken as well as extra cords, especially power cords and another plugin.
I was thinking of adding a 2nd hard drive in the spare internal bay......I don't need to go too hogwild, something in the $200 range isn't overkill......but a raid drive is "right out" as the Brits would say.
Rumor has it the internal should be a serial ATA at 7200 rpms but I have heard SCSI drive are faster for real time editing....
    Thoughts and recommendations?

Internal SATA will work great for you. I added a 400GB drive to my system and it's working great. No problems when editing footage either. I also use about 1TB in external firewire storage without any problems. I have two firewire enclosures sitting on top of my G5 tower so they don't take up any desk space.
As far as SCSI goes, technically they are the fastest around especially when striped in a RAID. BUT, they are EXTREMILY expensive for similar storage capacities, more challenging to find, and unless you are editing 35mm or greater film uncompressed, I really don't think they are worth it. If you are editing 35mm film uncompressed then buy a RAID with fiberchannel for connection to your system;-)
    Happy editing,
