Dv7 6b32us HDD error 301

I have a  dv7 6b32us .  I ran HDD test and error 301 came up on both quick test and long test.  Does this mean I have to replace it?  Any recommendation for the new HDD replacement?

Hi,
Yes, it does look like you'll need to replace the HDD.
The drive on the link below is an example of one that would be fine for your notebook.
750Gb Notebook Hard Drive.
The procedure to replace the Hard Drive starts on Page 59 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.

I installed Windows updates (111 of them, hadn't been done for a while)
On reboot the system hung on Windows screen. Managed to use system restore to go back to beginning of the month. Started ok. But tests showed software problem on hdd.
Updated anti virus, did a backup.
Then windows showed SMART hdd error.
Restored system to factory reset using hp system restore. Now hdd error remains.
In CMD window disk part list volume window shows HDD as healthy.
I never had any hdd problems before the update everything was working good. Only reason I did the update was so I could update msword to read docx files. Now my computer is completely broken :-(
What to do next? I'm thinking format the hdd see if that can help

SMART HDD error (301) means it is time to replace HDD because it is failing or has failed.
Identify your model name, product number:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c00033108
Test the hard drive using quick & extensive hard drive tests from System Diagnostics in BIOS by tapping away f2 as soon as you power on laptop.
    Windows 7:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=in&lc=en&docname=c01443317
If the hard drive error shows up with failure ID, it means it's time to replace it with a new one.
    Are you in warranty?
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/weInput?cc=us&lc=en
If so, HP would send you replacement HDD for free of cost.
Have you made Recovery media to reinstall the factory OS after replacement. If not, you may have to order them too from HP:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=bph07143

    Hi,
The 301 Smart error would indicate that your Hard Drive is failing and will need to be replaced.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced.  You can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know - include the size ( ie 500Gb ) of your current HDD.

  • Data recover from a hard drive error 301

Can anyone advise me of how to recover data from a hard drive error 301.  I have a pavilion dv7-4177 and i received the hard drive error code 301 two weeks after the warranty expired. I back up my data so I though but when tried to reload that data on a new hard drive it would not take. The damage hard drive will not load the OS now even in safe mode. Is there any way to retrieve this data from that hard drive.

    Hi,
One possible way to try and retrieve your files from a non-booting drive is to follow the process detailed in the link below.  The Ubuntu operating system CD you create can run from the CD alone ( ie it doesn't have to install on the Hard Drive ) and I've often found it to be successful in retrieving data even from a failing Hard Drive.  When you've created the CD, follow the instructions and see if you can back up your files.

  • Advice on recovery from hard disk error 301

    Hi all,
I have a HP desktop PC, Pavilion HPE h8-1170d which is about 2.5 years+ old. The specifications are:
Intel Core i5 2500 with 8G RAM, 1TB SATA hard disk. I have recently installed a Radeon HD6670 graphics card as the original card gave problems. I have also upgraded to a Cooler Master 500W power supply.
Other details of my PC are listed here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02991104&tmp_track_link=ot_faqs/top_issues/en_u...
Recently, I experienced failure associated with the harddisk, indicating error 301. I managed to recover sufficiently (somehow) by using Microsoft's error checking tool for harddisk and now able to boot up and run. But I know I will have to replace it as it is a matter of time before the harddisk completely dies.
Before I go and buy a replacement harddisk, I hope I could know about the following:
    1. I am not sure which version of SATA is my PC using. Can I just specify that I want a SATA harddisk, and not be concerned about their version of SATA ?
    2. What is the best way to replace the harddisk from the software perspective ? Should I do an image copy from my current harddisk, if so, what is the easiest way to do this ? sorry, I have not done this before so need to ask such basic question. Would it make sense to connect the new harddisk first and then do the image ?
Thank you very much for any help !

    Hi smtan,
A SATA III, 6 GB data transfer rate disk will work.
Your PC model was introduced by HP in 2011. It may have SATA II but a SATA III disk will be backwards compatible. If this is true you will be limited to 3 GB transfer rates.
One other consideration is HDD size. You should probably limit the HDD replacement size to 2 TB. Your PC probably has a legacy BIOS and your HP Recovery discs may not work on a HDD exceeding 2 TB.
You have a couple of choices on moving or installing Win 7 on your new HDD.
You can clone the existing install from the original HDD to the replacement HDD. You will need to use either: free disk imaging software or purchase this software. I have heard good things about Macrium Reflect free and EaseUS free.
You can GOOGLE for other choices.
Install the disk imaging/cloning software on the source HDD. Install the new HDD in your PC.
Run the cloning software and follow instructions on cloning the operating system to the new HDD.
Please see this article for instructions on cloning one HDD to another.
This article may interest you. Consider purchasing an SSD replacement drive. The performance increase is unbelievable. Many SSD manufacturers provide cloning software with the purchase. You also need to buy the desktop kit version. This includes a 3.5 inch adapter for installing the 2.5 inch SSD in the HDD cage.
There is a downside if you go SSD. Your HP recovery discs may not work because the replacement SSD will be less than 1 TB. There are ways around this. Please see this forum post on installing Win 7 without a disc. Let me know if you are interested.

I have a virus on one of my hard drive so I purchased a new drive.  When I opened up the laptop, I see there are two bays for hard drives.  I would like to get my OS running on my new drive and clean off my old drive an put it in the 2nd bay.  It appears there is not a connector available to connect the 2nd drive.  What would I need to purchase to put a 2nd drive in my DV7-6b32us?

  • Why can I no longer connect to iTunes store?  Error 301..

Suddenly I cannot connect to iTunes. No idea why, apparantly it's error '301'. No firewall changes were made and iTunes is still permitted..

    Hello Josh,
I was researching what may be causing you to not be able to access the iTunes store, and found a couple of articles that may help you out. The first is an article named Can't connect to the iTunes Store found here http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1368. There are steps to try depending on the Operating System you are running.
Also there is a more Advanced troubleshooting article called iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3297 that may also help.
And if you havent already, a great troubleshooting set of steps would be to restart the computer, router and/or modem then retest.

  • Right Side USB Ports Don't Work on my DV7 6b32US

    I just bought a DV7 6b32US.
It's on Windows 7 Home Premium.
The left hand side USB slots are okay. but the two on the right side do nothing at all. No message - nada!
It seems to be a common issue, but I have no resolution to it.
Also, annoyingly, when I logged on to the HP site to try and find drivers, the laptop's serial number is recognized as a Compaq.
    Anyone able to help?
    Thanks in advance

Hello everyone.  I understand you're having issues with non-functional USB ports.  I suggest trying the following.
    Go to Device Manager.
Expand the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section.
    Remove all "host controllers."
    Shut down the notebook.
    Remove battery and AC power.
Hold power button for 20-30 seconds.
    Replace battery and AC power.
Boot notebook and allow Windows to reinstall the host controllers.
    Reboot one more time.
Verify that this resolves the issue.
Let me know the result.  I hope you all have a Happy Holiday!

  • Satellite U200-181 Built-in HDD ERROR

I've bought "Toshiba Satellite U200-181" 2 weeks ago. Recently (2-3 days ago) Ive got problem with built-in HDD.
So the problem is that sometimes I'm getting the message "Built-in HDD ERROR" during Notebook startup. This message "Built-in HDD ERROR" appears from time to time and system stops booting from HDD, but can boot from other bootable devices. First time when message "Built-in HDD ERROR" occurred, it was accompanied by lot of strange clapper pop noise from inside of the Notebook. All other
"Built-in HDD ERROR" messages were accompanied with not so loud and strange clapper pop noise, but still with some pop sounds (not as loud as at first time).
To identify possible problems I saved S.M.A.R.T. data log (see appendix#1).
Additional information: After I've purchased the Notebook Ive made successful BIOS upgrade from version 1.40 to version 1.50 strictly according Toshiba official web-site instructions. After BIOS upgrade system worked well, no ERRORS, no faults. But 3days ago I got "Built-in HDD ERROR" message.
    Any ideas? Thank you.

    Hi
Maybe dust is blocking the cooling ventilator and so your notebook shuts down immediately
So in your case I would clean the notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook. Check this!!!
Which display driver you are using? I can only recommend the Toshiba drivers because they are pretested.

My F29 took a hefty knock today around the HDD area on the forward right, while my kids were playing around. In hefty i mean that when it got knocked it unclipped the speaker panal near the sreen.
For a while it continued to work but about 10 mins later i got a blue screen with a load of text and then it just restarted.
During the boot up screen a error came up saying "Built-in HDD error".. Now i checked the connection and they seem solid enough. is there anything that i can do to get my system working again?
    Thanks in advance
    J

    Hello
You can check this yourself ;)
On the bottom side of the notebook you must only remove the HDD cover that is secured with one screw as far as I know. Remove the cover and then you can see what type of HDD it is.
Anyway, as far as I know the Qosmio F20 was equipped with IDE HDDs. That means due the 28bit LBA limitation you can use HDDs up to 128GB.
So I think a HDD with 120GB would be best solution.
