Dv8315nr drops to battery while plugged in, especially under load

Have the dv8315nr and it keeps dropping to battery while plugged in, especially when the PC is under load, such as games or using CD drive.  The power block is ok, it has been tested with other power blocks and the issue still happens.  If you unplug the power at the pc and plug it back in, it will (most of the time) go back into a charging state.  I sent to hp while under the extended warranty and they sent it back with the diagnosis of "battery was bad, needed new battery".....and it worked ok until just out of warranty then started again.
I don't think it's the battery, since it happens with or without the battery in place (of course it dies completely when the power drops w/o battery in).
Has anyone experienced this and if so, have a method to fix it?  I suspect there is a hardware problem with the power supply in the laptop.
This question was solved.

It sounds like the beginning stages of a bad power jack. That is the place where you insert the AC adapter into the laptop. The problem is very common and requires that a new jack be installed. Fortunately for you, the dv8000 has the power jack as a separate plug-in module...it does not require soldering just removal and replacement.
Here is an internet ad for a company that does the repair. I am not suggesting you hire them but they do post some nice pictures of the internal workings of the dv8000 series so you can understand what I am writing about. The repair job is only modestly hard; not nearly as bad as if soldering were needed. The part is readily available.

  • GPS runs down battery while plugged into car charger

    Hello,
I have a Fascinate with the 2.2.1 and the Samsung car charger.  When I run Google Navigation or Bing Map while the phone is plugged into the car charger, the phone battery drains and does not charge until I exit navigation.  If I walk out to the car with a full battery and plug it in, the icon will indicate charging while I am driving to my destination but when I arrive and unplug the phone after about an hour's drive time, the battery immediately shows red and the phone shuts itself off.  The phone will charge normally when plugged into the car charger but only if navigation is turned off.
I don't know if it does this also with the VZW navigation app, I don't use it.
There are no other apps running other than the pre-installed bloatware. Wifi and Bluetooth are turned off.
The phone does this with two different Samsung chargers and also a generic charger.  There is only about 6 months on the battery.  It did the same thing before the last system update (I first thought I had a bad charger, which is how I ended up with two).
    Anyone else?

    Hi Andynator,
Thank you for your posting, it includes some great information. I can assist you with the issue you are having. I would like to ask if you find that this happens only when running maps and using the car charger?
I have checked my references here and I am not showing that this is a known issue with the Fascinate. Since you mentioned that this was occurring before the update and is still occurring after the update, this tells me that the root cause of the issue may be with the device itself.
You may very well have already called in, since posting your message. However, if you have not and are still having the issue, please feel free to send me a PM with your contact information, as well as the mobile number. I will be more than happy to contact you personally in order to troubleshoot and address the issue further for you.
Thank you again for your posting and have a good day!

  • T430 using battery while plugged in?

I recently bought a refurbished t430 that's still under warrentee, and having a weird problem with it. Under normal use, the battery chargesas it should, but I've noticed while playing games, the battery drains as if it's running on battery power, but without the screen dimming. Has even had or heard of a problem like this? The AC adapter is the 65w lenovo one it's supposed have.

At full load, the power consumption of the system is bound to exceed the 65W the adapter itself can deliver, so it has to draw upon the battery's supply of reserve energy for spikes of power consumption.
If you remove the battery while using the 65W adapter, your CPU will throttle itself to prevent overexertion of the AC adapter.
If you want to be able to run at full speed without a battery or be able to power the system at full load without draining the battery, you'll need to upgrade to a 90W adapter.

  • Safe to remove battery while plugged in?

I heard that you can greatly increase the life of your battery be removing it when the computer is plugged in. I got my powerbook just last February and I can already tell a great deal of performance loss in the life of my battery, so I just want to know if it's safe to take it out when I'm not using it.
    Thanks

Oh yes. Just one caveat, should you lose power, the machine will almost instantly shut itself off. You have upwards of a couple seconds while the backup battery overcomes the loss of power. So keep the battery at your side.

  • Battery level dropping under load while plugged in

    Hi all,
I'm, the otherwise happy owner of a retina Macbook Pro form July 2014 (with a 85w power supply)
I have the issue that, whenever my computer is under load and uses the discrete graphics card, its dropping power - even though the charger was connected.I know the discrete graphics card uses up more power, but honestly it cannot be true that if I play a game in high settings on the macbook (which only has a keyboard, mouse and charger connected in that case), then the battery drops... It cannot sustain itself or what? (I have never experienced this with any other laptop, so I hope for the love of God, this is not what to expect).
Also, just the other day, I was using 2x external monitors (with their own power supplies), and just watching a Twitch (videogame stream) in a browserwindow on one of the screens, and the charge started dropping, even while plugged in again -- it dropped maybe (a wild guess) 10% an hour or so.
The setup there was: I had iMessage open on the screen on the macbook - nothing else; I had a PDF displayed on the first external screen and I had a browser-window open with a video-stream on the second external screen. A mouse, keyboard, powersupply and 2x videooutputs (1x HDMI, 1x DisplayPort), was connected to the macbook at that moment...
I mentioned that I couldnt play anything with high settings, or watch a videostream while using external monitors without draining the battery power to a friend that has had a few macs - he had note experienced it before, and told me to post in here (After we agreed that since the external displays had their own power supplies, they shouldn't be dealbreakers). I'm hoping you can help me shed some light on the issue and help me. If something might need to be sent back to Apple for replacement, I'd rather do it before I personalize it too much.
    Thanks alot!

Thanks for the answers I see.... A shame since the 85W charger is by my understanding the highest wattage one Oh well, thanks!

  • Macbook Pro retina display 13 inch stopped charging. Charger LED also not on while plugged in. The battery fully drained off but the system can detect the charger when it was switched on.

Macbook Pro retina display 13 inch 2014 model stopped charging. Charger LED also not on while plugged in. The battery fully drained off so the system can not be started but the system can detect the charger when earlier it was switched on before draining off the charge. Charger type magsafe 60W.

Once you have examined the power inlet on the computer for dirt, and made certain that the pins on the end of the MagSafe cord are free to move in and out to make contact, there is very little you can do yourself.
You will need to visit your Apple Store (FREE with appointment) or your Apple-Authorized Service Provider (policy varies). They work on these all the time and have good expertise and lots of spare parts to try to determine the problem.

  • Does leaving macbook air on all the time (while plugged in) to download torrents degrade battery life?

Does leaving macbook air on all the time (while plugged in) to download torrents degrade battery life?

You have a lot of things going on here...you are keeping the Air plugged in all the time, you should run on the battery periodically to give it some exercise, you are keeping it on all the time which may be keeping it under constant or near constant load, and you are doing all of that to download pirated content, for which you will get no help on here.

  • Phone discharging while plugged in at night, battery dead in the morning

I'm using the OEM charger and OEM battery that came with my phone, and I charge it at night everynight. I also use the phone as my alarm clock, and have done so since I bought it over 2 months ago. Suddenly this week it has discharged overnight while being plugged in. This happened twice. I plugged it in and went to bed, leaving the desk clock on (with the night mode activated). The charging light was on and I used the phone while plugged in for a few minutes, and I made sure the charging icon was displayed on the battery icon. This morning I fortunately woke up before my alarm was supposed to sound, however the phone was completely dead. Orange charging light was flashing, still plugged in, but wouldn't do anything at all. I had to do a battery pull and plug it back in, charge for a couple of minutes, and then it would finally come back on. When it did, it showed the battery was at 1%. It is now charging normally, back up to 18% after about 40 minutes of charging, and hasn't frozen again.
The first night this happened, I did not have an alarm set at all. The second night, I did have an alarm set with Alarm Clock Plus app.
I know there is a pending software update, however it hasn't been pushed to my phone yet, and when I try to have the phone search for an update, it shows the update is there but gives me an error message when I try to download it. From what I understand, I just have to wait until Verizon decides to push the update to my phone, is that correct?
    Thanks.

  • MBP 2011 - Battery Draining While Plugged In?

After playing Splinter Cell: Conviction for a few hours, I noticed the battery had drained a few percentage points while plugged in? Almost as if the graphics card and fans needed even more than what the charger could provide. This has happened more than once, and once I've quit, the battery has no problem climbing back to 100%.
Any help would be great. Thanks!

This is how your machine should be running. There are conditions, generally under a heavy load, that may require more power than can be provided by the power supply alone. During these times, you may see your battery charge slowly decrease even while your machine is plugged in. This KB article refers to MacBook Pros with removable batteries, but it does identify the issue:

  • Can I use my iPad Mini while plugged in thus keeping the battery at 100%?

Can I use my iPad Mini while plugged in thus keeping the battery at 100%?
Or must I use it on battery all the time?

Copied from Texas Mac Man ...
The quickest way (and really the only way) to charge your iPad is with the included 10W USB Power Adapter. iPad will also charge, although more slowly, when attached to a computer with a high-power USB port (many recent Mac computers) or with an iPhone Power Adapter (5W). When attached to a computer via a standard USB port (most PCs or older Mac computers) iPad will charge very slowly (but iPad indicates not charging). Make sure your computer is on while charging iPad via USB. If iPad is connected to a computer that’s turned off or is in sleep or standby mode, the iPad battery will continue to drain.
Apple recommends that once a month you let the iPad fully discharge & then recharge to 100%.
How to Calibrate Your Mac, iPhone, or iPad Battery
    http://www.macblend.com/how-to-calibrate-your-mac-iphone-or-ipad-battery/
At this link http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/galaxy-tab-android-tablet,3014-11.html , tests show that the iPad 2 battery (25 watt-hours) will charge to 90% in 3 hours 1 minute. It will charge to 100% in 4 hours 2 minutes. The new iPad has a larger capacity battery (42 watt-hours), so using the 10W charger will obviously take longer. If you are using your iPad while charging, it will take even longer. It's best to turn your new iPad OFF and charge over night. If I use my ipad2 while plugging in the wall charger (charging), will it hurt the battery?

No, I do it all of the time. But based on what you are doing, your activities may use more energy than the 10v charging and you still use the battery, just at a slower rate.

iPhone 5s won't turn on after this update. Battery was at 98%, tried holding sleep & home button while plugged in, no good. Any ideas?

P.S. I just noticed; when I hold the power and home button at the same time while it's plugged in as if I was going to restart it, my computer acts as if I'd plugged it in again (it makes the USB notification sound, itunes opens up again, I get the same "your iphone is in recovery mode" message, etc.), but that's the only response I've been able to get from pressing anything on the iphone. thanks again.

  • The battery won't charge while plugged in.

I have a ten-year-old iPod video 30g whose battery died several days ago. I bought a new battery and changed it into my old thing. However it won't charge while plugged in. I mean, actually the charging battery sign will show but it's still empty when unplugged. Now the battery has run out and while I plugged it in it will show "please wait, very low battery". But it just won't get started since no eletricity is being transferred.
    Please help. Thanks!

Does your iPod appear in iTunes or on your computer as external storage, if you connect it now with no battery inside.  I know older iPods (4th gen and earlier) function normally as an iPod without a battery connected, as long as it is connected to power with the docking cable.  Not sure about the 5th gen iPod.
If it you can get it recognized by the computer, you can off-load the songs.  iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to iPod.  So you cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer (except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store).  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.  (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
I guess you do not have the original photos?  When photos are synced by iTunes to the iPod, iTunes optimizes the photos to fit the iPod's small screen and take up less space on the iPod, and the photos are stored in a single database file (instead of separate image files).  The only easy way to recover photos from an iPod is IF (when you synced the photos), you had a setting enabled on the iPod's Photos screen iTunes (where you set up syncing for photos).  The setting is to "include full-resolution photos when syncing" (that may not be the exact wording).  If that setting was enabled, iTunes puts a full-resolution copy of the image files on the iPod, in a folder called Photos, which you can access (using Windows Explorer or Finder on a Mac) by turning ON the Enable disk use setting.
Otherwise, the photos on the iPod are low-res versions of the original photos, and they are not directly accessible on the iPod.  There may be third-party utilities that can access the photos on the iPod, and save them off on your computer's drive.

  • Battery does not charge while plugged in

My computer is plugged into the charger and does not lose power while plugged in, however, it does not charge either. It currently sits at 63% power and says "Battery is not charging" when I mouse over the battery icon and verifies that it is plugged into the power adapter. Basically the problem is that it doesn't lose power when its charged in, but the battery isn't recharging either. The light on the charger isn't lighting up either, however, I've verified that its the computer's problem by plugging my charger into my roommates identical laptop. Any idea what the issue is? Thanks everyone.

I also have this problem with my Mid-2007 MBP.
I have reset the SMC to no avail.
I've noticed that if my battery appears to be charging (albeit slowly) and then I try to play World of Warcraft, it switches to "Not Charging" once the fans startup.
I just had it serviced and they replaced the logic board 1 wk ago and then I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Could any of this have an effect?
