DVC Pro HD codec

Hi guys:
I'm editing firewire-captured DVCPro HD footage from a Varicam for a series I'm working on. I don't understand the codec thing for After Effects movies. We use a lot of AE in our productions, but we if we use the DVCPro HD codec, we can't get video with an alpha channel. We can only get either RGB or alpha. So we've had to resort to checking "none" in the AE output module, and 1280x720 for the size. This gives us the movie, but then they all have to render. This can take a great deal of time in a one-hour program.
Any suggestions on how to alleviate this issue?

I wasn't aware that DVCProHD supported an alpha channel.
Could be wrong, but where have you seen that?

  • When Converting DVC Pro HD to H.264 does it retain the 4 2 2 color space?

I have some 1080i green screen footage shot on HVX200 on DVC Pro HD codec. My client is editing in Premier Pro on Windows and of course cannot view this footage. Now rather than purchase DV Film's Raylight so he can view the footage, he wants me to convert it to the H.264 1920x1080 codec so that his software will view it.
So here is my question: When converting this footage, does the H.264 codec keep the original color space of DVC Pro HD? I want him to have an easier time of green screening his footage with the 4 2 2 color space of DVC Pro HD and simply wanted to be informed whether it would cross over in the conversion? Thanks

H.264 isn't an editing codec. He can see it, but edit it? Well, I guess Premiere might. H.264 is highly compressed, and I doubt it will key well.
Send him the ORIGINAL P2 files...the stuff you offloaded from the card. Premiere can work with P2, just not after they have been imported into FCP.
Please tell me you kept the original P2 card dumps.

  • Upconverting from DVC Pro HD to a 10-bit codec

    Hi,
I'm working on a project that has been edited in DVC Pro HD (720p). There are a lot of layered effects and color adjustments. We want to move the project to a 10-bit codec for final rendering and mastering.
What is the best way to make this transition?
Is it better to use the Media Manager to make a recompressed copy of the project, change the codec in the Sequence Settings and force a rerender, or simply export a quicktime movie with a 10-bit codec? (will simply exporting re-render the effects in 10-bit color space?)

What do you mean by final rendering and mastering? I ask because I'd argue that the benefits of going 10-bit (vs 8-bit, in most cases) only apply to smoother gradients and intensive color correction (where you're aggressively altering color balance, recoloring shots or greatly adjusting contrast). If all that has already been done, I'm not sure that I, personally, see the benefit in what you're looking to do.
Also, since you're working with FCP 5.1.4 - and cannot go ProRes422 - can you afford the extra hard drive space and drain on your resources? Correct me if I'm wrong, but your only choice would be to go from DVCProHD to 10-Bit Uncompressed. Which means files, what, about 4-5x larger?
All those doubts aside - meaning you have the drive space available and have yet to do color correction - I'd use Media Manager to create a new project using only the media referenced and, as mentioned by ap_TonyTony, use FCP to render out in 10-bit.
If you're also looking to uprez the material (going up to 1080p, for instance) then I'd dump those new clips into Compressor, crank up the Frame Controls and let the machine churn out files for the next 3 days. Once that's done, I'd go into your fresh Media Manager-created project and do a manual reconnect to your 1080p stuff.
Or am I totally lost on what you're attempting to do?

  • White screen issue with DVC Pro HD

I have a G5, have Final Cut HD and have upgraded to QT 7 Pro. I am trying to open an HD file I shot last year, which was edited on another system. When I try to open the clip, it is a white screen with audio. The movie info is as follows.
    DVCPRO HD (720p60), 1280 x 720, Millions
16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 48.000 kHz
Any ideas on why it is not playing? Thanks!
    John M

ok... i just got this on mine. yesterday i was just getting ready to log subclips from fcp5, and when i opened the project file, i noticed that all my subclips i created and orignal clip where all red / out. so i closed fcp5 and went to the location of the file. i double clicked it, and behold, white screen, audio only.. so i had to completely redo the convertion of the orginal file.
    next day
I was looking for a subclip that i had already extracted from the main file, and when i double clicked it showed the video. after that closed the window, and someone asked me to reopen the quicktime file again, i double clicked it, and all of a sudden the video was white, and only audio.
ive spent about 4 to 5 hours researching with someone else on this issue and have yet to find anything such as a fix, or work around, but my video keeps disappearing which is disturbing. from what we have come down to the issue is deals within quicktime are below...
we believe that quicktime is somehow changing the codecs DVC PRO and changing it to "Integer (Big Endian), Timecode, Video.." that is what it says.. and comepletely removing the codec for the video, and deleting the video footage, but keeping the audio in place perfectly. now, we also used metadatahootenanny to inspect a copy of the file and low and behold severe corrupt of the meta data in the quicktime file. the issue be with quicktime interaction with storage, or a bug quicktime behalf. we need to find a solution to this issue. we are currently in contact with apple tech support and hopefully we will be posting a answer soon.

  • Looking for best soluce to compress a DVC Pro 25 movie 3min

    Hi,
(sorry for my poor english, i'm french...)
I am looking for a good soluce to compress a DVC Pro 25 movie (during 3minutes).
I must to compress this movie to reduce the time to transfert by FTP a 750Mo file,
when the file is transfered, i must decompress to create a "new" DVC pro 25 for editing with final cup.
i think (but i'm not an expert in this domain) it is possible to obtain a good compression ratio ( 25%, 50%, or better ?)
Can you respond to me :
    1) What is the better soluce , compressor ? or ohter software ?
    2) What is the codec to use ? MPEG2, ... ?
    3) What is the possible ratio
    4) what is the time to compress on a mac pro ?
    Thanks for all,
    Best regards

    Hi,
    Thanks for your answer,
but my "problem" is that i dont have a mac,
i try to obtain a soluce for this situation to transfer quickly
and after the user must to edit the movie (letter, logo,...)
so, the quality must be "good" or "very good"
Are you sure the MPEG2 H264 codec is good for this ?
I know, i can with bitrate, adjust the quality, but i can't make a try...
If somebody can't try for me, just to inform the size after,
    Thanks for all,
    bests regard,

  • Please help: DVC pro 50 capturing to QT to FCP

    Hi,
What are the capture specs for best quality DVCPRO50? The DVCpro tapes will be capured elswhere and the client will deliver us a external drive with the files on it.
Offcourse they should be in best quality and not neccesarilly have to be re-rendered in FPC studio. So what's best?
    - Uncompressed Quicktime files? Or are they way to heavy?
    - Or uncompressed avi's? Not previewable... and heavy?
    - Or Quicktime DV pal? Downgrading Quality. So i guess not.
    - Or another codec wich is superb in quality for DVCPRO and light to handle
    - Or the new QT H264?
    Please help

I'm in the midst of a huge doc that was shot on dvc pro 50. The original editor dropped by the wayside, but they had rented a deck and captured all the material as dvcpro50. I inisisted that they back up the 2 disks of material and I've been editing away happily.
DVCpro50 is a digital format and if captured in it's native format, it's as good as it can possibly be.

  • DVC PRO White Frames

I'm collaborating on a DVC Pro project with an editor who has FCP 5. I have version 7. But when I open his project file to make notes, I see white frames in both the viewer and canvas windows.
I can open the clips in quicktime player, so it does not appear to be a codec issue. Footage is DVC ProHD 720p.
Also, as a shot in the dark I changed the canvas view to alpha and RGB , oddly enough I'm getting red monochrome of the footage - weird. RGB remains white, straight alpha white. I've tried all variations in the canvas view (checkerboard, overlays etc) and all other are white frames - weird.
    I'm using a Macbook Pro 2.4ghz, 4 gigs ram 512 video card, FCP 7.01 in Leopard 10.5.8
Any thoughts on this much appreciated.
    M

I remember FCP5 creating a different kind of QuickTime movie than FCP6 and FCP7 do. I believe FCP5 created "Final Cut Pro Movies" whereas FCP6 and FCP7 create "QuickTime Movies". Maybe you have mixed kinds of video files, and that is causing an issue? Are you able to view the video files in the finder, to see if you have different icons sitting in there?
Also, in the past 4 years I've seen white frames with DVCPRO-HD, it's been a codec issue.
    Hope this helps!!

  • DVC Pro HD Quicktime files to Final Cut Express.....Possible?

    Hi
Had a filmmaker send me Selects from a project I did with her in DVC PRO HD Quicktime format
from her Final Cut Pro. Only audio will play in my Final Cut Express. Will she have to reformat and send again in a more FCE friendly format or is there anything I can do from the FCE end to access the footage?
    Thanks Mike

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCE HD can only handle HD content through Apple Intermediate Codec (1080i or 720p), so your friend must choose this codec to export his material.

  • ProRes HQ 1080i or DVC Pro HD 1080i.

I've been told that I need to convert my :30 video to either ProRes HQ 1080i or DVC Pro HD 1080i for upload on a ftp site.  They also said they prefered DVC Pro HD.  Will the Adobe Encoder create these file types, I don't see them listed in my choices... am I missing something?

You'll probably have to redo the export and upload if you use P2 Movie as the format; it doesn't create a self-contained file, but rather, a P2 folder structure.
Instead, select QuickTime as your format and you can use the DVCPRO HD codec of your choice there. That will create a self-contained MOV file, which I'm willing to put money on will be preferred to the above. The codec is the same as P2 Movie, just wrapped up differently.

  • AJA 720p60 DVC Pro HD Exporting

    Alright,
Has anyone come across an issue of exporting an AJA 720p60 23.98 DVC Pro HD and then bringing it back in to FCP, laying the export into a sequence of those same settings and having to render it out?
    This is what I know:
The AJA 720p 23.98 timline is 960x720, pixel aspect ratio of HD(960x720)
What gets exported is 720p 23.98, 1280x720, square pixel
The only way I've found to get the right video is to use Quicktime conversion, using the 720p60 codec set to 23.98. The only issue is that it will only do a medium quality export.
Is anyonw else experiencing this problem?
    Work: Dual 2.3ghz G5 PowerMac, 4.5GB RAM, FCP 5.1.4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   AJA Kona LHe & 3 Driver v3.3

I work with this format all day, and don't have this particular issue. Why are you exporting and reimporting? HOW are you exporting? If I export a Quicktime Movie, using the sequence settings and make it self contained, I can reimport that and it works fine...same timeline. If I export a clip, bring it into After Effects, work on it, render it out as 1280x720, and bring that into my DVCPRO HD 720p24 timeline, it drops in perfectly...no rendering, no problem.
    So what are you doing?
Also, when you do QUICKTIME CONVERSION using the DVCPRO HD settings, it will say MEDIUM, but be full quality. But the gamma will shift a bit, so I don't recommend it.

  • Cannot View DVC Pro HD

I run Windows XP and using TransMac to view DVC Pro HD movies from a Mac external hard drive. I cannot view the movies and the creator of the movies says that his Quicktime Pro plays DVC Pro HD movies for him on his Mac.
Can someone please tell me if there is something I need to do to view and edit these movies with Quicktime Pro for Windows?

FCE does not work with the codec, FPRO can, if you can access it. Or, this free app can convert the clips to one that FCE can work with.

Make sure the conversion matches the specs of one of the FCE Easy Setups. I'd suggest an AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec).

  • How to export a DVC Pro HD file

I have a 1 hour doucmentary that I've edited on a Windows 7 PC in Premiere CS5.   I need to get it closed captioned and output on HDcam.  The production studio I plan to use for this asks for a self contained QuickTime file, and they suggest the best codecs are Apple ProRes 422 or DVC Pro HD. I think tha t under the Quicktime export options there is a DVC Pro HD setting, but it doesn't match the dimensions of my project, which is 1920x1080  29.97 fps.
Are there any suggestions for the best solution to this problem.
    Thanks,  Jim

Find out if they can take an Uncompressed AVI.  (I'd be surprised if they couldn't.)

  • DVC PRO HD for final cut express

    Hi,

  • DVC Pro 50 Question and Surprise!

    Hi
I recently got some DVCPro 50 footage to edit with. I have a Sony DSR45 deck (DV/DV Cam) that can't play DVCPro. So I rented a deck and captured into FCP 5.
I selected the Easy NTSC DVDPro 50 capture and all went well. The deck worked and capture was a breeze.
Now, I expected that when I reconnected firewire to my DV Deck (which I usually use to monitor NTSC through) that FCP would send DVC Pro 50 down the firewire and there would be no NTSC output. Sure enough that was the case.
But I inadvertantly switched the project back to a DV NTSC easy set up (while the DVCPro 50 project was open) and lo and behold the firewire output from FCP popped up on the NTSC monitor!(through the DV Cam deck!)
Now, what is going on here? Is the DVCPro 50 footage being downsampled by FCP for the monitor? Or am I seeing 'all' of the DVCPro 50 data?
FCP is not applying any rendering or real time effects.
    To add to my confusion....
I also have an AJA LA converter. So I set it up to receive the DVCPro via FW and give me a Component Video feed to the NTSC monitor.
It worked as expected... but the images were much darker than the result in the above DV set up.
Neither the DVCam deck nor the AJA can add or subtract set up.
The monitor is set to add set up to the output of the DVCam deck (since dv decks don't add it on throughput). Maybe component signals don't get that set up on input.
Any glimmers of info that might help me sort out my confusion?
    Thanks
    Lee
PS the NTSC Monitor is a Sony PVM14 L2

    Hi Lee
your sequence settings tell FCP how to render the footage for that sequence, despite the format of the footage contained
when you changed your sequence settings to NTSC DV, then FCP started rendering your DVCPRO50 footage as DV, hence making it viewable through FW to your DV deck/monitor.
thats how it generally works anyway!
check the color of the render bar at the top of your sequence timeline. usually, switching the your sequence settings away from the native codec of the footage contained will make the render bar turn red, meaning it wil have to render ... although that wouldn't necessarily be apparent until you actually play in the timeline (while the playhead is still, FCP will render the current frame under the playhead automaticaly).
    hope it helps

  • DVC Pro HD playback

Can Quicktime pro play DVC Pro-HD if you don't have Final Cut on your mac?

Can Quicktime pro play DVC Pro-HD if you don't have Final Cut on your mac?
QT 7 Pro is not dependent on having FCP installed on your system for the playback of DVCPRO HD compressed files, but it is dependent on these codecs being installed and the installation of FCP is the normal way of installing this component package.
