DVCAM tapes to FCE setup required

I need to transfer DV footage from 4 DVCAM tapes onto my G5 for editing in FCE. I'm waiting to receive my copy of FCE HD and I have located a place where I can rent a Sony DSR-11 DVCAM deck. But I am totally unsure on how to connect the DSR-11 to my G5. The DSR-11 shows (I look at brochures) a DV IN/OUT which uses a 4pin iLink DV in-out cable which appears different from the firewire connections in th G5, even if the sales rep at the rental outfit told me there is Firewire out on the deck. Can it be connected directly to my Mac using a Firewire 800 cable or do I need a capture card with the DV IN?. Will Final Cut Express see the DSR as a camcorder/deck? Incidentally I also just received a Director's Cut Take 2 Media box which I could use with the S-Video inputs and DSR S-Video outputs, but it would mean a double conversion, wouldn't it?
Any insight greatly appreciated before I commit money to the rental of the deck. Thank you

You need a four-pin to six-pin FireWire cable. Use the rear FW 400 port on the computer. Yes, FCE will see it. Make sure the deck and FEC are set to work in PAL.

  • Print hdv sequence to dvcam tape

I've never tried it, but can you print a hdv sequnce to a dvcam tape?
I've had a look at the forum and a few people mention using compressor, but I have fce 4 which hasn't got compressor.
Does anyone have any experince doing this in fce 4?
    Thanks.

Do you have a DVCAM camera or deck? Do not do this with copy and paste. Take your edited HD sequence and place it inside a DV anamorphic sequence to scale it properly and correct the pixel aspect ratio. Before you do that make the the HD sequence is fully rendered and mixed down. Then once inside the DV anamorphic sequence, render and mix down that, then print to video.

  • Export HD 720p to DVCAM tape (print to tape) 16:9 not letterboxed

    hi -
i'm trying to export an HD 720p24.00 project to DVCAM tape for projection at a film festival. i need to make sure the 16:9 aspect ratio is squished, not letterboxed, onto the DVCAM tape. what is the best way to go about doing all this? i am exporting to a DSR-11 DVCAM deck.
    thanks in advance.

    follow up:
actually, if the DV sequence is 24.00 fps, it won't play in an external monitor through my deck, nor will it print to video.
so now i'm trying to put the HD 720p sequence into a DV 23.98 sequence and render and we'll see if that works better.

  • How to export a clip to a DVCam tape via a recorder

I am unable to transfer a clip to a DVCam tape because there no such alternative in the menu share of FCP X. Can some one advise on how to proceed. The right question is HOW TO PRINT TO VIDEO IN FCP X ?

    FCPX doesn't do this.
You will need a third party hardware and software.
    Here's an example.

  • True 24fps Film Project out to DVCam Tape - Proper Settings?

I have a TRUE 24fps 1080x1920 Uncompressed Quicktime of my film.  I'm  going to be using Premiere Pro CS5 connected via Firewire to a Sony  HVR-Z1U Camcorder, which is capable of DVCAM recording and playback.  I  need to record the film to DVCAM tape for a film festival....and I was wondering 2 things:
    1.  What framerate is needed for DVCam?  I'm guessing I will need to convert the film to 23.976 before outputing it to tape....
    2.  If I need to convert to a 23.976 file beforehand....what is the best  quality file for output to DVCam?  The best way I know of currently to  convert my true 24p footage to 23.976 is by going into After Effects and  converting to MPEG2...setting the M-Frame to 3 and the N-Frame to 12 so  I avoid conversion flicker problems....but I know MPEG2 will probably  be pretty lossy compared to other file formats that DVCam tapes can  handle.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Doron Kipper

DV and DVCAM are effectively the same, 720 x 480 NTSC or 720 x 576 PAL and the framerate is 60i or 50i. Assuming NTSC you need to rewrap to 60i using MS DV AVI.

  • How to export to DVCAM tape with timecode from Premiere CS 6?

I am having a lot of trouble with this. I need to give a dvcam tape with proper timecode to a television station for a Show I edit. I am editing for this station for last 7 years. Before they accepeted betacam, but now they changed to DVCAM. I have Premiere Pro 6 (or CC) and SONY HVR M15U deck. I connected it via firewire, then realized firewire can't export timecode. Now I am in a pickle.
    Possible solutions (may be):
    - Buy a card, send other signal like SDI to the deck?
    - Buy new deck?
Please help. I able to print to tape via firewire, but how can I print the timecode?
    Thanks

    realized firewire can't export timecode.
    Sure it can.

  • DVCAM tapes

So I've been asked by my church to create a DVD of a Dance Festival that will be digitally recorded by a professional service, they will be recording on DVCAM tapes, the larger ones.
I have found that a DVCAM player costs around 7000 dollars.
Any recommendations on how I can capture this video? Are there resources that would allow me to rent equipment of this nature or perhaps go to a studio and utilize some equipment?
Has anyone here had experience using DVCAM?
    Thanks

You can usually find a rental house that offers DVCam VTRs. Or you could pay the same people that are taping the event to capture the material to a FW hard drive that you provide. Or check with production/post-production companies in your area to see if they can do it for you.
Or you could look for a used DVCam VTR. A used Sony DSR-11 will often sell for around $1000.00 on eBay.

  • Capturing DVCAM tape

I am capturing a DVCAM tape via Firewire from a Sony DSR-11. In the Log and Capture window I select the DV NTSC 48 kHz capture preset.
However, the resulting video looks bad. It's heavily pixilated and not sharp, not at all how it looked in the preview window and when viewed on an external broadcast monitor.
    Any suggestions?

That is how it looks. It is just a "proxie" image for you to see what is being captured without needing an external monitor attached. It will look like crud. But, as you said, that isn't how your footage REALLY looks. For that, just look at the external monitor that you should have attached to the deck if you want to see a good quality image.

  • MiniDV vs DVCam tapes

    Hello,
I'm about to shoot a 60min documentary with a Sony PD-150. Since I'd be going through a lot of tapes, I was wondering if there's any advantage to using the professional DVCam tapes over the regular consumer-grade MiniDV tapes.
Is there a difference in picture/sound quality? Or is it mainly a matter of durability for archival purposes?
    Thanks.
    TD

Picture quality, DV or DVCAM, is totally dependent on
lenses and the chips recording the images. Otherwise
    it's the same.
That's what I figured, but wasn't sure because I've never done any test shoot of the same thing with 2 different types of tapes.
I was curious partly because I just wanted to know for future reference, partly because where I am, DVCam tapes are very hard to come by, and they are quite expensive (30USD for DVCam vs 3USD for a MiniDV tape). Considering the amount of tape we'd go through for a 60min doc, using DVCam tapes would take a good chunk out of the tiny budget.
    thanks for all the replies.

  • Unable to properly capture HD video from miniDV tape in FCE

unable to capture HD video from miniDV tape
When I connect my Sony HDR-HC3 miniDV HDV camcorder to my iMac via firewire cable and use Final Cut Express to capture the video from the tape, I do not get a Capture window that allows me to specify in and out points, I just get a playback window that immediately starts capturing and the only option I have in this window is hit ESC to stop capturing. If I let this capture window continue to capture the video from the camera with miniDV HD tape, then the entire tape would be captured as one massive single video clip.
QUESTION: Is there something I change or do to make the proper capture window appear where I can specify in and out points to capture from tape for each clip?
NOTE: using same camera and tape with iMovie with automatic capture enabled, all the clips get captured properly. I also tried to use the manual setting in iMovie and it worked too.
More details(read only if you want more information)
I have a several miniDV tapes containing HD video created on a Sony Sony HDR-HC5 and Sony HDR-HC7. Unfortunately, both these camera were stolen, and I have since moved to a camera that uses flash memory, not tape. However, I need to get the video footage off these tapes, so I bought a used Sony HDR-HC3, it plays the HD miniDV tapes just fine and iMovie reads the video from this camera just fine, but Final Cut Express does not.
When I setup Final Cut Express, I used the Easy Setup and specified:
    Format: HD
    Rate: 29.97 fps
    Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60
These setting match those of the camera and recorded tape. If I use any other settings but these, then Final Cut Express never sees the camera and never opens any capture window at all. Using Quicktime 10 movie inspector on the clips captured by iMovie from same camera, all the clips match this setting too.
    Final Cut Express version 4.0.1
    iMovie 09 Version 8.0.2 (821)
iMac 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 running
    Mac OS X Version 10.6.4
My Final Cut Express scratch disk is a Seagate 2TB external USB 2.0 Hard Drive that has been formatted to be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This external disk is also where iMovie successfully captured all the video from the same camera.

Thanks for the answer. It makes me sad. I thought using Final Cut Express would be an upgrade to a more robust editing system from iMovie, yet iMovie does a superior job of logging and capturing video from HDV video on miniDV tape in comparison to FCE. Not only does iMovie capture each clip on the tape into it's own video file automatically, it also includes timestamp information in the filename indicating when the clip was originally recorded, which appears to be something that is missing from Final Cut Express. Now I realize that HDV miniDV cameras had a relatively short life span in the consumer marketplace and have since all been replaced by flash and hard drive based AVCHD cameras, but from circa 2004 to 2007, miniDV HDV camcorders were very popular and I am sure there are lots of consumers that must be super frustrated by Final Cut Express limited ability to log and capture clips properly from these cameras.
Assuming I do not want to make a rough cut of video in iMovie and prefer to begin my editing project in Final Cut Express (not doing XML export of iMovie project), I need to determine the best way to get clips captured via iMovie into Final Cut Express and determine if there is anything inferior in the iMovie captured clips that I need to be aware of. So far it appears that both iMovie and Final Cut Express reduce the 5.1 surround sound captured on the HDV miniDV tapes to stereo sound, which is not a big lose given the 5.1 sound was recorded from camera's built-in microphone, but it makes me wonder if the video is reduced in any way by the iMovie import process, examining the video in quicktime's inspector window the video appears to be the same in both iMovie and FCE, but I'll research the answers to these questions elsewhere on this forum and post additional questions if I do not find the information I need.

  • Transfering VHS-C tapes to FCE

I am transfering home movies from VHS-C tapes (the small tapes that are fatter than miniDV, that you have to place into a VHS tape adapter) into FCE 4.0. I have to use a VCR and am running that through a DV converter which runs into my external HD by means of firewire. I have easy setup set to DV converter box, but when I am done capturing, I get the error message that the audio might be out of synch due to inproper settings, that's not verbatim but the jests of the message. Since there is only one DV box setting, how do I get the correct setting?

The DV-NTSC DV Converter easy setup expects 48KHz audio. I suspect your converter box may be set for 32KHz audio - you should check it. BTW, what make/model is it?
First check Item Properties for one of the clip(s) you captured - what does it say for Aud rate?
If your clips really are 32KHz audio, you could try creating a new sequence, then before doing anything with it, click on the +sequence name+ in the FCE browser, select Settings, then click +Load Sequence Presets+ and select +DV-NTSC 32Khz.+ Then go ahead with your editing.
One other thing, you really should have the converter box connected directly to your Mac, no other Firewire device connected at the same time. With a daisychained setup, you may run into capture problems, and actually the audio sync message you got may have been caused by the daisychained devices.
