Dvcpro 50 file half the size it should be

I had a Dvcpro 50 tape captured by a service bureau today. The file size is half what I calculated it would be and (viewed by quicktime) looks much worse than it did on the monitor during shooting. Quicktime says it is DVCpro 50, 720x480, 29.97, 59.08 mb/sec, 103 min.
(all what I expected) BUT it also shows the file size of 26.34 Gig which is exactly 1/2 what both my calculations and the video space calculator say it should be. And, as I mentioned it doesn't look good either. (my DV backup looks better!) What did the service bureau do wrong? thanks

Dunno, but I'd have it redone for sure. Sort of sounds like they may have used an analog output from their player to a capture card, and doing that can degrade the signal. The File size is odd though. Can't quite figure out what happened there, but in any case, I'd have them redo it. Have them capture via SDI or Firewire, and use FCP to do the job.

    MacBook Pro Mid2014 15" reports a Samsung UE40HU6900 4K TV as 8K (7680x4320).
This results in an ugly, washed out image half the size it should be. If you turn off scaling everything is tiny as 8K are displayed on a 4K screen. To get the actual 4K resolution you have to turn on scaling. Still 8K is transferred to the device, but doubling the data lines makes the picture look washed out and create obscure effects for line borders.
Did anybody encounter this problem before? Is there a fix for this? (OSX 10.10.1)

You have the MacBookPro6,2, the Edsel of Macs. It may be covered by this program:
MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010): Intermittent black screen or loss of video
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.
*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

  • Images in LR and finder 10% of the size they should be?!

    Hi guys,
I just imported every photo I've ever taken into LR (21,000+ images, took about 4 days!). I had previously imported them into an Aperture trial, but Aperture was stupidly, impossibly slow, so now I imported them into LR. When I view them both in Finder and the "Develop" window, they're about 10% of the size they should be. When I zoom to even 25%, they're all pixellated.
Of course, I"m freaked out that all of my images were somehow reduced 90%, though I have no idea how this could have possibly happened. Anyone know what the deal is?
    Alec

    More detail:
It seems LR imported 10,269 images as thumbnails (approximately half of my 21,366 photo library) to a folder 2000>December 31, with the files dates renamed (as I specified) as "Date-Number" (ex: 20060710-14857). These files are what shows up when I click "Reveal in Finder" from LR.
However, when I look in the LR-created folder 2006>July 10, the actual files are still there and intact. Why doesn't LR show these files when I click "Reveal in Finder"? Why a huge folder of thumbnails the size of half my library?
Did Aperture make thumbnails and then LR imported them?
I don't get it - can any explain to me what's going on here?

    Hi Devidas,
I would suggest not deleting the OEM partition, as it contains system hidden files

  • Why in the new versions are the tabs half the size than in version 30?

When I upgraded, the tabs were half the size than in version 30.

Hi jjalarie, your question was about "size" without specifying what dimension. Thank you for clarifying that, but maybe you could have been nicer about it.
What two versions are you comparing, exactly? The currently available version is 33.1 but the forum software detected your version as Firefox 30.

  • Exported file is half the size that FCPX said it would be

I'm making a movie montage, project properties are as follows:
    1280x720p
    25 fps
    48 kbps audio bit rate
Using the Export File option, the settings match what's above, with H.264 being the codec (format is quicktime). It says the file size will be 482 MB, but when I export, the resulting file is 209mb. The picture quality isn't that good, because the bitrate is half what it should be. Why is this happening?

Sorry, for some reason I was unaware there was an "Export File" option. Unless I am using special Compressor presets, I usually use "Master File".
I have just done a quick test and the estimated size was 207MB whilst the finished video was 138MB.
However the quality is perfect and the actual size is the correct one for the ideal bitrate.
Frequently the estimated size is way off the mark.
Russ, what's the difference between "Export File" and "Master File"?

  • File size of corrected jpegs expands to half the size of the original

Using a Canon 1Dx, I have an option of utilizing both slots and assigning different file types to each.  In one slot I shoot RAW, and on the 2nd slot I shoot a JPG backup.  Typically though I'll do all my work on the RAW file in Lightroom 5.  The unimported JPG shot on the second slot expands to approx. 51MB.  But the CR2 file, imported to Lightroom 5 and then exported as a corrected JPG, only expands to 28MB.  Am I missing something on import/export that would reduce the filesize of the corrected JPG?  I cannot find a setting that is toggled that augments import/export size.  Is this a bits per channel issue?   Similarly, I have the same issue with Bridge.  When converting a CR2 file to JPG it expands to the same 28MB filesize.  My client wants his JPG to expand closer to that 50MB number.

    dean5432 wrote:
When the JPG file is opened, it shows as 51MB.  When the CR2 file is opened it's 28MB.  I was under the mistaken impression that the files would produce equally sized JPGs, and that somehow in the output from Lightroom it was constraining the size of the finished image.
When you say "opened" what  'MB' reading are you reffering to? Lightroom can show the image file's Resolution (5184 x 3456), File Size (MB), and Megapixels. What does LR show for these three reading, in particular you should be interested in the image 'Resolution' value.
When viewed in PS your Canon 1Dx raw image files should show a 'Document Size' of:
    5184 x 3456 x 3 (RGB) x 2 (16 bit data) = 107,495,424 Bytes ÷ 1,048,576 (# of Bytes in MB) = 102,515,625 Bytes = 102.5 MB
Your full-size Camera JPEG images should be exactly 1/2 since they are 8bit images = 51.3 MB
I can confirm these numbers with my Canon 600D, which also uses a 5184 x 3456 resolution sensor.
    You may have your camera set to shoot M-Raw (3888 x 2592) or S-Raw (2592 x 1728) with full-size JPEG (5184 x 3456).

  • When I export my RAW files to JPEG they're about half the size, is that right?

So, I've been using Aperture for about 2-3 years.  I always shoot in RAW and then export to JPEG onto my desktop so I'm able to burn a disk.  In the past my JPEG size is about 2/3 the size of my RAW files. Now, it's about 1/2.  (ie, 23.72 MB in RAW is about 12.3 MB in JPEG) I'm not understanding why.  All my presets are to keep the original size.  I want my friends to have the full file size so they can go and get their own prints done...
Thanks so much for anyone's help!
    Misty

    Misty,
Lots of unknowns.  Is it the same camera shooting the RAW.  Is the RAW in both cases set the same -- with some it can be either lossless compressed or totally uncompressed RAW?  Also bit depth can be set differently with some -- what type of camera are you shooting?
Is the JPEG compression set to 12 in both cases (size of 12.3 MB would likely indicate 12)?
    Ernie
