DVCPro decks and FCP 5.1

Are there any known issues with FCP v.5.1 and Panasonic DVCPro decks AJ-SD255. Specifically, batch digitizing and print/edit to tape?

I don't know of any specific issues with this equipment but reading between the lines, I'm guessing you may have a problem?
This is a good workaround for curing your camera recognition problem with FCP (if that's what it is):
First, check that your Easy Setup / Timeline / Camera or Deck Settings are all exactly the same, then making sure your camera or deck is in VTR mode, try to capture again.
FCP uses a different form of QT than iMovie for capturing, so if the camera works in iMovie (or if it's listed in System Profiler) but not FCP, it obviously means your Mac can see the VTR but FCP can't, so you need to do this QuickTime fix.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301852
Follow the instructions carefully and you should have things running in no time - it's quite safe but you must Trash the Receipts AND re-install QT from the link provided.
If the Camera / Deck isn't recognised by iMovie or System Profiler, try resetting the Firewire Bus . . . Turn off the Mac and disconnect the power and all Firewire cables. Leave it for 30 mins then connect back up.
Still not working? Try a different Firewire cable.
Failing all this, try resetting the PMU (Power Management Unit). The method varies from machine to machine, so visit the Apple site and search for it in support.
Don't use iMovie for capturing - it doesn't give you a timecode and that's very important.
Let us know how you get on!

  • DVCPRO JITTER IN FCP PREVIEW AND EXPORT

Recently with FCP I get a really bad jitter. I tried the De-interlace filter and flicker but they are no use. I have an archival tape that looks fine, but if I import the tape in FCP and I begin to edit in my timeline, in an external preview moniter the video appears jittery. If I export on DVD or on tape and it still shows up jittery. It appears the horizontal lines are going in two different directions almost like a field problem. Please HELP!!!!!!

  • DVCPRO HD footage and FCP 5

    Hi All,
I have a client I am working with next week who has a bunch of footage that was shot with an HVX 200 Panasonic witth the P2 cards. The shooter has already captured the video (as quicktime files, I believe HD quicktime files) to an external hard drive that has firewire 400 and USB 2 inputs. So, I don't need to capture, which would be a problem b/c I don't have a capture card or HD peripherals to edit.
Anyway, I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2.3 gig machine with 2.5 gigs of RAM and an HD 23 inch Apple Cinema Display. Will I be okay working with this footage, being that it has already been captured for me. I just need to edit some SOTs, VO's and maybe a short news package or two from these clips. I am supposed to deliver the final product as standard DVCAM for the client. My thinking is that I will edit the piece(s) and export using QT conversion, Quicktime movie with DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec, 29.97 frames and 720 x480 size. Correct??
    Any input is much appreciated!
    Scott

    There are a couple solutions.
One is wait for Apple to release the HDV 24 codec, but there is no telling when that is.
Two is to capture at the DVCPRO HD codec, but then you need the JVC HDV deck and a Kona LH capture card:
    http://www.aja.com/pdfs/AJAwhitepaperHDV.pdf
    Three...(ok, a FEW solutions)...LumiereHD or HDVxDV.
I hope Apple releases that codec soon though...

  • Digitizing DVCPro 50 and Mini DV with the red line

I've digitized from DVCPro 50 with Capture Settings at DV 50 NTSC 48khtz and Video Playback at DV 50 NTSC 48khtz and Playback firewire 720x480.
Now I'm digitizing the Mini DV portion (Broll) with Capture Settings at DV NTSC 48khtz and Video Playback at DV 50 NTSC 48khtz and Playback firewire 720x480.
When I put clips of each in a sequence together, a red line appears over the DVCPro 50 footage. I render the DVCPro clip and both play fine.
Did I set up something wrong? Is there a short cut to rendering all my DVCPro 50 dailies? I can easily re-digitize the Mini DV footage but the DVCPro 50 deck was a rental and over 30 hours so can't back-track there.

Can't digitize the Mini DV's in DVCPro 50 settings because FCP won't let me, at least not without a DVCPro 50 deck so I'm going to try the export, re-import plan.
I want to be sure not to bolox up the media management so should I isolate the media? Here are the steps I'm contemplating:
tuck away all the FCP files on the scratch disc that pertain to DVCPro 50
create a new DV NTSC project with a new name
digitize the Mini DV media with DV NTSC settings and capture
export these files as DVCPro 50 to other drive with DVCPro 50 media
go back to the initial project and import bumped-up clips
put the MiniDV project and media in a folder
take the DVCPro files out their isolation folder

  • Capturing DVCpro 50 into FCP 5

I am new to DVCpro50 and 24p and can't, for the life of me, get the deck (Panasonic SD93p) to read in FCP 5. I've got the firewire connected, but neither the computer (G5), nor the deck are registering that there is any sort of connection. Can anyone help me with the settings so I can capture this footage before I throw both the deck and the computer out the window?

    Hi again,
Oops... sorry, not sure, confused that. But the following information might be helpful:

There was an excellent thread on the SD93P with FCP on uemedia.net, but just checked... it has been archived.

    Hello,
I am new to FCP. I come from a PC based Editor. After installation FFCP opened once. I closed it and now it won't open. When I attach my AG DV2500 deck it wants to start then just quits. Without the deck attached it says it can't locate the "Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480). Try again or click continue to set external device to none" Then Pof it's gone. How do I set my external device to none?
I have downloaded updates. No help

  • HVX 200 and FCP 4.5 - workflow RAIDS?

    Hello,
I am about to embark on a show editing footage captured on the Panasonic HVX 200, shot in 1080i/24p. This will be my first time working with the P2 cards and setting up a raid array catering to the specifics of this project. The show was captured on those P2 cards. The shots are totaled at 1.5TB of MXF files. I have many questions. First off
    1. What happens to the MXF files when FCP unwraps them, do they get bigger or smaller
    2. What is the most efficient raid set up to edit on, in terms of speed and transfer rate
    3. What is the most efficient back up system?
    4. Will an offline edit be troublesome, due to the time code on the P2 cards
    5. Will I need to edit at full resolution? What is the data transfer rate at full res? Will 400fw drives be able to handle this, or do I need 800, or even an esata raid solution.
Please suggest any gear, or certain models of drives. I am looking for the cheapest solution w/out compromising performance
I will be editing the show on a power Mac G5 1.8 GHZ, 3.5 GB of ram, do you think I need more ram? Is my computer fast enough to edit this sort of a project?
Thanks for the input, you guys and gals always come through

    Post Response

First and foremost, watch this tutorial:
    P2 Workflow Tutorial
    1. They stay the same size. All that happens is that a quicktime wrapper is wrapped around them, and audio and video are combined. No loss is quality occurs.
    2. A SATA RAID will do you fine, but honestly I have been editing this and Varicam footage using 2 G-Raid firewire 800 drives. You need at least a firewire 800 drive, but I'd recommend a SATA Raid. Sonnet, Weibetech, Firmtek and Burly boxes...all work well.
    3. Copy the P2 cards to field drives. Bring them in and transfer to firewire drives. These drives are your TAPE MASTERS. Do not erase these, do not lose these. Store these as your would field masters. I myself use internal SATA drives in a single firewire case that I swap out the drives. Cheaper than multiple enclosed drives. From there you import to your Media drives...your SATA Raid.
    4. No need to offline. DVCPRO HD really doesn't take up that much space...roughly twice what DV takes. Oh...you are going 1080 24p. That takes 42.12 GB/hour DV takes about 13GB/hour.
    5. Editing at full resolution is fine and easy. But you will not be able to get away with firewire 400 drives. As I said, FW800 or greater. 1080i might require more, thus the need for the SATA Raid.
I believe that you need at least a Dua 1Ghz machine for DVCPRO HD, and you have that...and you have enough RAM...so you are good. The only choking point you will have is render times. Especially when compressing for DVD. 90 min show took me 14 hours...oof.
And read my Blog about working with the HVX...click on Underdog to get there.

  • HVR-M10E / HVR-M10U and FCP compatibility

    Greetings,
I'm sorry to ask this but I can't seem to open the apple link that could give me the answer.
I've heard of several issues concerning the compatibility between sony's HVR-M10E deck and Final Cut.
Before buying the deck, i would like to make sure with you guys that FCP 5 now works fluidly with the deck, and that there is an appropriate preset. And what about FCP 4.5?
Most of the editing i'll be doing will be in PAL/
I've been told that FCP has trouble with the HVR-M10E, and works fine with the HVR-M10U. Sounds odd. Anyone know the difference between thest two decks?
    Thanks for your time...
    Tee.

    Hi Tee,
I've just gotten back from a trip to Asia. The deck I rented over there was M10E. I had no problem at all, but I used it with FCP 5. I know FCP HD 4.5 has no HDV setting, this is a problem.

  • FCP-just upgraded to tiger and FCP Studio-reports 'Missing FW connection".

I just finished upgrading 3 computers to OS 10.4.7 and FCP Studio, then installed all the obvious updates.
The first 2 computers, a G5 and G4, had no problems seeing and capturing video via FW.
The last computer, my primary workhorse, cannot find the tape device, a DSR 20. Upon clicking 'continue', to finish loading FCP, in A/V settings, the system reports the Apple FW is "missing". I've switched out the cable, then the tape devices, I've rebooted and thrown prefrence and plist files... etc...
Here's a weird thing, the controller in the log and capture window works fine to control the deck, but it won't pass or capture the video.
I'm getting ready to reinstall everything. Anybody have an opinion?
    Thank you,
    SB
    Power G5 2 x 2 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   3GB DDR2 SDRAM

Often in upgrading the OS, QT or FCP for some odd reason QT will get knocked slightly off kilter. The usual solution it to force a full reinstall of QT.
    This is how:
Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
    Good luck.

  • Troubles with communications between Deck and FTP

There appears to be a problem in the communication between the deck and the Final Cut Pro system. Audio and Video signal does to not appear to waver in anyway.
In FCP Log and Capture mode, the incoming or deck Time Code display briefly flickers/scrambles, which is simultaneous to a flicker between "VTR OK" and "No Communication" in the Comm Status display. The FCP system interprets this a new tape being inserted into the deck and stops playback.
This communication breakdown is random, as multiple playbacks over the same stretch of tape result in varying stoppages, and there is never any kind of flicker in the timecode display on the deck.
When I attempt to "Capture Now" from a "Non-Controllable Device", the FCP gives a warning that it cannot digitize when a device is not chosen in my capture settings, even though a device is most certainly chosen.
In case the "Custom Easy Set Up" had become corrupted, I created a new "Easy Set Up" that resulted in the exact same outcome. I have also unconnected all cables, found no broken or bent pins, and re-connected the cables but to no avail.
FCP Version 5.1.4, the deck is JVC HD-050U, and the serial port is R-422 through a Kona Interface.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

check in your Kona control panel to see what the Kona is seeing on input as far as video is concerned. That deck has component HD out, no HDSDI. take a look at
    http://www.convergent-design.com/CDProductsHDConnectMI.htm
for future continued use of that deck. check your deck that it is enabled for 422 control and that Timecode is auto (LTC and VITC) also verify LTC and VITC is selected in your device control preset. My guess is your kona is trying to see standard def component and the deck isn't set to downconvert.
I normally bring in the camera and bump up to DVCProHD 720 via HD-SDI w clone code, and work with DVCProHD

  • DV Cam Decks and HD...

So I am currently shopping for DV Cam decks to run with a Canon XH A1 HD Cam and was wondering something...
I have read and researched a lot about the Sony DSR-11 DVCAM Deck and am interested in what it offers in function and value. However, will it be able to import and export footage in HD quality to run with FCP HD?

The Sony DSR-11 only records and plays DV or DVCam footage; it will NOT playback or record HDV. For that you'll need an HDV VTR.
FWIW, FCP HD (version 4.5) will NOT work with HDV either. You'll need FCP 5.0 or higher to edit HDV footage.

  • Using Digital Beta deck with FCP 4

Can one use a digibeta deck with FCP via a firewire? What should the settings be if I want to keep everything uncompressed? Space is not an issue. I ask since I've only used minidv and DVcam.
    thanks so much!

You need a capture card (Aurora, AJA, Decklink) and drives capable of uncompressed playback.
The only card that captures and sends the signal thru a firewire cable is the AJA I/O, but the Aurora and Decklink solutions are cheaper. Aurora being my favorite.

when you ran the control app for the box did you select FCP? default is avid generic.
I would use Sony 422 as a default protocol, vitc and ltc, but that's just the way I think.
have you talked with convergent support?

  • Intel Mac and FCP

I have a lab full of macs. All g5 dual 2.5s. We are running OS 10.4.9, and FCP 5.1.4. They run perfectly. No problems.
A month ago I replaced two of these edit stations with two Intel Mac Pro dual 2.6, dual core Macs w/ 4gb of ram. They are running 10.4.9, and FCP 5.1.4 as well, but FCP freezes up constantly on these. I have run the 10.4.9 combo update on both. Same problem. Any ideas? Anyone run into this one as well?

Wondering if there might be a problem with your RAM. Run hardware tests and if possible, Techtool. Also, try editing with some media on your internal drive with graids disconnected. I've had a lot of problems with various firewire drives (although I worked with a multitude of firewire drives for many years without serious problems). Worth a shot to try and isolate the problem.
And although you said you were working in SD, you didn't say what format. DV? If so, do you have a deck and/or converter connected to your computers?
