DVCPRO HD AJA LHe

I need help to capture a dance recital I did four weeks ago with a Sony FX1 but I have problems.
I capture from the component FX1 to component Aja LHe.
I connect the RCA cables from the FX1 to XLR analog LHe channels 1 and 2. I also use an impedance box matching transformer.
When I capture 01:15:00;00 of footage, it only shows 01:12:30;00 (approximately I erased the file) in the bin and the timeline. However, the sound is all there. Only the last portion of the video is missing. The length of both clip is the same 01:12:30;00.
Please let me know if this is not clear.
I captured both ways already drop frame and no-drop frame with the same result.
Please help.
Thank you

I used easy setup Aja DVCPRO HD 8 bit 1080i 29.97.
The only setting I changed was to Firewire NTSC. I have a firewire cable connected from the G5 to the FX1 that I forgot to mention to control the camera.
I have a feeling it has to do with capturing the sound at 32khz instead of 48khz but it shows 48khz. I have the sound coming in/out of the AJA card rather than the default setting or the G5.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

  • Motion playback on production monitor through AJA Kona LH card looks nasty.

    Okay, so here's the deal.
We have recently invested in some shiny new things to equip an edit suite - a Kona LH card and a Production Monitor. Along with a Sony HDV/DVCAM VTR. Specs of our set up are listed at the bottom.
Pretty much all of the work we have done in the past has been non-braodcast - we're looking to improve workflow and quality of final output. We work mainly with Final Cut Pro, but also with Motion.
We have connected everything and have marvelled at how much of a difference it makes having a proper video preview from Final Cut (v. 6) as opposed to what we had before - firewire to camera to TV... Of course we were expecting this marked improvement.
We were also expecting the key benefit of a video preview output from Motion.
Now. We do get a video output through to the production monitor from Motion. But this is where it gets weird.
When we do a preview of an animation, it looks really shoddy.
As a test case, let's take a basic text crawl in Motion 3.
Static graphics look great, but when you play motion graphics, the image quality is really jaggy and nasty. (even at full frame RAM preview, best render settings, full res - all of these options are apparently properly selected).
So we did some test exports. Usually we would export animations in the Animation Codec, with an alpha if intended for compositing on top of a video track in FCP... we tried a bunch of different formats - animation, photoJpeg, DVCPRO 50, Aja 2Vuy, Uncompressed 10bit...
All these play from Quicktime on the computer monitor just fine, but when playing from the AJA TV app to the production monitor, again the same problem. And then when you bring them into Final Cut, the same problem, even when you match the sequence settings and field order to the source video ...
In effect, it seems that anything generated in Motion just doesn't want to look nice on our Production Monitor - even when imported into FCP.
HOWEVER - if you drop the Motion PROJECT into an FCP timeline, all is fine!
We know the AJA card and the Monitor are working because of this fact, and because when you generate titles from within FCP itself - the same text scroll, for instance, it looks perfect!
I have also found when working with old composited animations originating from AE that you can get FCP to pump these through to the production monitor beautifully when working in an uncompressed sequence setting - or in an Animation sequence setting. (For an Animation sequence to go the the production monitor from FCP, the Video Playback option in A/V Settings needs to be set to "AJA Kona 625i25 RGBA" instead of "AJA Kona 625i25 8 bit" or 10 bit).
The above point could be of relevance...? The only Video Output options from Motion or AE that apply to our setup and monitor are "625i25 RGBA" and "625i25 DV-RGBA" ... are we supposed to have more options?
In short, we could work around these issues - it just doesn't seem right however that we can't get a decent external preview from Motion. A big reason for upgrading our setup was faithful video previews of animations from these programs...
We also can't understand why exports from these animation programs can look so poor. I can export a video with a text crawl generated from a DV PAL Final Cut Project with DV Pal compression settings and it looks massively better playing through AJA TV than our test Motion exports.
    It just isn't right.
    Please help. Pretty please.
For reference, here are the specs of our set up:
Apple Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5
    4.5 GB DDR SDRAM
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 9800 XT
    Equipped with Kona LH Card
JVC TM-H1750CG Production Monitor fed via SDI (have also tried component, to no avail)
    It just isn't right.
Please help. Pretty please. Many thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are seeing interlace artifacts - in Motion's project properties, have you tried setting the field dominance to None?

  • Veiwing HD on a client monitor Aja card has no HDMI or DVI . any solutions

I wrote to aja and they said to use the analog component out. I want to use the HDTV to on-line hd shows. Does going analog out sound like I'm not getting the best to the monitor? Do I need to add another DVI card to the computer? Will it work with the AJA Lhe?

Well, you have the LHe, right? That doesn't have HDMI out...so you can't use that. It has SDI out, but, the HDTV doesn't. So that leaves Component. They are right (as usual). Component gives a fine signal, I use it myself at times.
DVI out from your computer will NOT give you anything resembling a proper video signal to the HDTV. With the LHe, the only option you have is Component. And it will get you a decent signal.
ONLINE HD shows? Well, since you can't properly calibrate the HDTV to color bars, I'd be hard pressed to recommend this option. Fine for client monitoring, but for critical viewing? Nope. The Matrox MXO2 has HDMI out that will calibrate your HDTV...I'd trust that. But HDTVs don't have the professional level options build in.

  • MacPro - AJA, Blackmagic...?

We will soon be upgrading our MacPro, replacing an old AJA LHe. Although we are looking into the LHe Plus I wondered if anyone else is having sucess with a third party card and Premiere CS6 specifically?
All we need the card for is monitoring to an FSI HD monitor and for colour correction. Deck control would be needed only for ocassionally digitizing some of our archive footage from Betacam, DVCAM, etc.
MacPro 2010, 12 gig ram, Nvidia 4000, eSATA RAID, will be upgrading to Mountain Lion

I just don't have that hardware to test with, myself.

  • Audio/video desynchronization

Hi, I've been capturing fairly long clips from a DV tape, using the firewire input, and I noticed a great desynchronization in the audio. At some points of more than 10 SECONDS!
It starts at a certain point of the clip, or at least it becomes apparent from that point on.
Looking at some other posts inthins forum, that suggested there may be a mismatch between the audio format of the capture and the one of the sequence, I checked it and they are the same!
The only thing that does not match is that the sequence is a 32-bit floating point, while the clips appear to be at 16-bit integer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Keep talking about this topic because I have the same problem when capturing component from an FX1 to component Aja LHe.
I connect the RCA cables from the FX1 to XLR analog LHe channels 1 and 2. I also use an impedance box matching transformer. I used easy setup DVCPRO HD 1080i.
When I capture 01:15:00;00 of footage, it only shows 01:12:30;00 (approximately I erased the file) in the bin and the timeline. The sound is missing a section somewhere in the middle and the video is missing at the end of the timeline. It doesn't capture the last 2:30 minutes. The total length of both clip is the same 01:12:30;00.
I capture from other two tapes with the same results. I also try to capture the video and the audio separate with the same result.
    Any other suggestions. Thank you.

  • CS4 exports are 5 times slower then in CS2

    System:
    Windows 7 (64)
    AJA Bord
    8 Core System
In CS2 it was possible to make UNCOMPRESSED exports apart from the Adobe Media Encoder. In CS4 all exports seem to run thru the Media Encoder. Most of the exports work faster but I did not find a propper way to export UNCOMPRESSED files.
On the "old" system (4 Core - Windows XP) CS2 exports
    AJA Avi v210 1920x1080
...in nearly real time. The same file with the new setup takes about 5x realtime. The weird thing though h264 also needs about the same amount of time then the uncompressed files. And the problem is not the RAID connected (copying is faster the real time)
    Any Ideas?

Sadly this seems to have no affect on the exporting time. I changed the set
ting USE MAXIMUM RENDER QUALITY (ON+OFF).
Since my input and output is the same (AJA avi v210) the system should not render anything, right?
Uncompressed 8 Bit 4:2:2 Quicktime files are axported in real time. It seems like the problem is the AJA Codec on this Machine.
Again, this is Windows 7 / CS4 and AJA LHE. Maybe I'll have to contact AJA?

  • Slow Video playback on external monitor

I'm having a problem with video on an external monitor drifting out of sync. The video plays back slow on the monitor but the sound come through fine and the video is playing at a normal speed in FCP. This is only happening with video from FCP, I can play a clip in Color and there's no drift. I've opened the project on another mac and there's no problem. Also, if I set the external video play back to 10 bit the drift is worse than if it is set to 8 bit, as in a 15 sec clip takes 19 secs to play back on the external monitor at 10 bit and 18 secs in 8 bit (not exact times). I've reinstalled AJA LHe control panel and drivers, but seeing as this isn't happening in Color it seems like it must be a FCP issue. I've trashed the FCP prefs (along with AJA and quicktime), what could this be?!?

what video capture card are you using??
have you set render all to FULL, and have you rendered??

  • Every click in Color takes 10 seconds when Kona monitoring is turned on

As an editor getting asked to do more color correction I've decided to move beyond Colorista and am learning Color. Since I have a properly calibrated broadcast monitor there's no reason not to! But what I am finding is when I have external monitoring turned on in Color, via my Kona LHe, then nearly every click and parameter change gives me about a 10 second beach ball until Color catches up and updates the frame in the interface and on the external monitor. It doesn't happen when external monitoring is off. Certainly not a way to work!
    Anyone seen something similar?

I ain't at home either so I can't properly verify software version but i have never had these issues at all.
Aja LHe driver 6.0.3 NDD version.
    OSX 10.5.7
    QT, 7.4.6, I think????
    Color 1.0.4 (isn't that latest pre-1.5 version?)
You might try using the Aja Uninstaller and then reinstalling the software but as you say, this has been happening through various versions, could be a software installation gone bad? Like I say, I've had wonky things happen within Color but nothing involving my LHe.

  • Apple Xsan is only compatible with Apple XserverRaid?

    Our System configuration is
    Apple G5 2.5 Quad 3ea

    Final Cut Pro 5.04 3ea
    Xsan 1.3 4ea
    OS X 10.4.7

Fibre Channel HBA ATTO Celerity FC-42XS (4GB)
Rorkedata HDX Storage 2ea(Single Controller Serial-ATA Type 2GB)
    Rorkedata HDX Storage
I configured storage by this way
    one
    2Bays -> metadata (Raid 1)
    14Bays -> seperate 7Bays and 7Bays (Raid 5)
    the other
    2Bays -> spare HDD
    14Bays -> seperate 7Bays and 7Bays (Raid 5)
    Using Data format is DV50
I did the speed test with AJA HDD Bench Tools, the result is write 190Mbps, Read 210Mbps.
But, I got the message "Dropped framed occured" when I do the capturing and Editing simultaneously.
I asked to apple people, they told me that Apple XSAN only supports the Apple XserveRaid, not Third-party
Products. I am really wondering it is true or not.
And, What is the best system to configure SAN with Apple XSAN?
    Apple G5 2.5 Quad 3ea   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   Final Cut Pro 5.04 3ea

We've got a similar setup with some Rorke arrays and really had no problems so far (aside from the usual XSAN 1.3 stuff). The reason we went for Rorke and not for the XRaid is simple: Apple doesn't have 4gig yet and we really need the bandwidth to get decent 2K playback.
We've never really had dropped frames as far as I know. Did you try having it as a 'normal' disk array, so just directly attached and HFS+ formatted? If it shows dropped frames there as well you might want to check your cabling or controller/array.

  • What the **** is going on with that export ?!

    Hi everybody.
it's my first post, i don't know where to start, i'll try to make it short and precise. (and sorry for my bad english)
I'm editing uncompressed SD 10bits captured with an AJA LHe.
I used to be able to print it to tape (to a DVW A500P)
and now, each time i try to print a sequence, FCP tells me something like :
    "Compression setup not compatible"
but i check everythings and the setups are right.
    Any suggestion ?
    thank you by advance.
    Alex.

#18 Edit to Tape "Incompatible Compression Settings"
    Shane's Stock Answer #18
To Edit to Tape you either need to have your sequence loaded in the VIEWER, or simply drag it from the BROWSER onto the Edit to Tape window and choose Assemble Edit or Insert Edit.
For both methods, the tape needs to be black and coded and have TC already on it. And you need to mark and IN point in the ETT window.

  • Color crashing on save!!!

    Hi there,
i've been experiencing constant crashes in Color when saving projects manually, even on short projects of one clip with a duration of 10 seconds or so. Send to Color from my FCP works fine, the auto-save works fine but doesnt save the grading information, but the manually save keeps crashing.
I'm on a MacPro with 3,2 Gb 8-core processor and 4 GB memory, so I don't think power is the problem! And Color is newly updated!
Any idear what might be the problem?
    Ragards, Nicklas!

    Hi JP,
I have managed to find a turnaround... I saved the individual grades, copied the to a new project, deleted preferences.prf and stopped using the faulty sequences.
I have been suffering to find a successful workflow for FCP and Color, this is what I have come up with so far:
I have 3 mac pro's, one for CC, and two for editing.
the first system is an old generation eight core 3.0 with ATI 1900, AJA LHe, 5Gb ram, Atto Fibre, Ciprico, JL cooper pannel, this was upgraded from a G5 (I used it with final touch HD)
the two other systems are new generation eight core with 4Gb and Nvidia 8800, built in Jbod,
all are connected by gigabit ethernet.
I have shot a Music Video on a panasonic Varicam, I dumped everything on the FRC and am now editing with material that is captured on Kona LHe, 422 8bit uncompressed SD 25 fps...
due to the many restrictions and hidden bugs in color when you export an edited sequence from FCP, I convinced the editor to start by color correcting the rushes, just like we do in one light telecine transfer from negative to tape... with the hope of re-grading all when the edit is approved.
    Here is what i did:
_+*The method that caused the problem:*+_
I opened color, set the project settings to the correct values, Pal DV, 720x576, 8bit uncompressed, 25fps....
I imported the video file, a duration of one hour and 12 minutes (I know about avoiding timelines of more than 20 minutes, but since I have done this before and it worked in final touch, i gave it a shot)
I cut the file using the split tool (in color), control X. I pre graded with primaries, secondaries, cfx.. , created some looks and grades, saved the file when I finished grading, rendered the clips overnight and Voila, the next day all was copied to the editing machine where the editor used my rendered clips as rushes and built a sequence.
I had no problem until I messed up something in the project directories, and was no longer able to save my color project... remember this project originated in color not final cut.. it autosaves properly but will crash if you attempt to save manually.
    _+*The method that worked:*+_
I started in FCP, did a preselection of the takes that needed grading, I sent to color, did a render without any grading, i used spotlight to gather all the rendered clips, and sent them to the editor who is now editing the music video with time remaps, additive dissolves, freeze frames, and all the god knows why forbidden stuff...
back in color, I went back to my original faulty project copied my grades to the new project created by FCp (send to color) applied the grades, and now the project saves properly... now, every time I render my graded clips, I copy them to the the editor's bin, each clip automatically updates itself on the editor's sequence and inherits all the effects...
color did not have any problems working on a timeline of over an hour...
and the project is well on track and I should deliver soon...
the things I learned, do not cut clips in color, it is not an editing tool, and never mess the directories on a job in progress..
and maybe this is not a bad workflow, until they manage smoother color FCP roundtrips.
I appreciate the time you spend replying to these forums, I read your messages all over and wish i had time to participate more in discussions.
i would be very glad hear about your own workflow for Color, I am not sure mine is the best, it has many disadvantages, but this once, it worked for me.
    Cheers,
    Elias.

I have the problem, that i can´t render a very tiny project in AME CC (adobe media converter) while the rendering in AE CC with the cue works.
My Project contains one comp (ray traced 3D) with 4 layers of which one is a light, one is a camera, and two are 3D Layers of animated graphic elements (the first contains three animated .ai-Layers and the second 3 pictures and an animated extruded Form).
I can see rendered frames in the project in AE CC in under one second but when i try to render it in the media encoder (AME CC), the rendering process is extremly slow. If Adobe would offer the h.264 (mp4) codec in AE CC, i would have no problem, but since its only available in AME, i need to render it with the AME.
My Memory Allocation in AE CC is: 21GB used for AE, MP on with 8 Cores (and 2GB for every Core), disk cache is activated with 12GB on a SSD only used for caching, which contains also the media database and the media cache.
When i try to render the project with AME, the pc uses every core, despite than using 8, causing 100% cpu usage on all 12 cores (although 2 cores are reserved for other programs).
Rendertime AE CC (Quicktime, FullHD, h.264, 5mbit): 3:16min
Rendertime AME CC (Quicktime, FullHD, h.264, 5mbit): stopped after 6 Minutes with 1/4 of the clip rendered, AME CC hangs causing 100% CPU usage
Another project, which is rendering fine in AE CS6 (the second mentioned in the start post), renders super slow in AE CC (30sec (CS6) compared to 1:44min (CC) max per frame), so that i have to come to the conclusion, that there some issues with the AME CC Rendering Engine.
I´am in motion graphics and video cutting for 15 years now, but had never such problems with rendering my projects.

  • Capturing Varicam Footage

    hey guys
we are trying to capture Varicam footage shot at 40fps and 60fps through a AJA LHE card when we capture it not all the clip is there, we have tried setting in and out points, capture now and nothing works, and the preset is at DVCProHD 720P 23.98 Varicam. so what are work around is capture everything at DVCProHD 720P 59.94 and use the Varicam plugin to convert everything. but we should be able to just capture it, and the Deck we are using is the 1200A and it is outputting 720P 59.94.

so then what is the 23.98 Varicam setup for.
For when you shoot 24p at 23.98 with the Varicam. FCP will remove the redundant frames from the 59.94 frame rate to get you the proper footage.
if we want the other frame rates we always have to capture at 59.94 and then convert.
Then you need to do that. Capture them at 59.94 and convert to 23.98...meaning that both will be in slow motion. Unless you shot 59.94 24p (another possibility), in which case you can have the FRC remove the pulldown...redundant frames...for you.
But if it is 60 and 40 for the sake of slow motion, then you need to capture at full frame rate and convert later.

  • Highlights clipped away when importing AE from FCP

I'm sure this has been posted but I can't find anything.
Importing a blown-out video clip into after effects, the color and luma values over 100% are clipped as if a Broadcast Safe filter has been applied.
If I export from FCP as Apple Prores (HQ) and re-import it, it's fine. All the information above 100% are still there.
If I import it into After Effects and export it back to FCP as Apple Prores (HQ), all the values are clipped away that were over 100% in the vetroscope. Seems like I lose my highlights as soon as I import it into AE. Is this normal? Am I supposed to bring the levels down before working in AE?
I have Mac Pro 3.0, latest After Effect CS4 and FCP. The latest Quicktime. AJA Lhe HD card.

I recommend taking a look at the post on ProRes colors in AE, in Todd Kopriva's blog, Region of Interest.

  • Bad Timeline Performance while scrubbing/...

Still runinng the Demo Version of CS4 there is just one thing that keeps me from buying it. There is a delay in the handling when I:
press space to play (2 sec)
press left/right for frame by frame search (1sec)
The delay is gone when I don't use the AJA presets and just work with fo.ex. DV PAL. Is there anything I could do to loose the delay?
