DVCPro HD frame rate issues

I'm sure that this question has been asked before, but I performed a couple searches and couldn't find a thread to perfectly answer it.
I have a tape that was shot (with the Pansasonic HDX900, shot to tape and not P2) at two formats, 720/24P and 720/60P. Most of the tape was shot at 24P, but the cameraman shot a few minutes shot at 60P to create slow motion. Both 24P and 60P are on the same tape. I am capturing directly from the camera, not from a deck. I have a couple issues:
1.) My device control through FCP does not seem to be working, so I can only capture with "capture now." My device control setting seems to be right (DVCPro Firewire), and I've tried to restarting FCP and the camera. It doesn't seem like this is a trash-the-prefs issue, so does anyone have any thoughts? I have driven the camera's deck through FCP before.
2.) What is the best way to work with the different frame rates? Right now it captures at 60P no matter which capture setting I have it set at (when shot at 24P it duplicates frames to make it 60P). Is this a result of mixing formats on the same tape?
I'm a little lost, thanks.
Stef

It doesn't have that function and after consulting the manual (again) I am beginning to believe that playback control is only possible internally to the camera, rather than externally from another device. It doesn't explicitly state this, but the manual DOES specifically mention the record start/stop functions but has no mention of playback start and stop.
That said, the larger issue at the moment and for the future is the frame rate issue.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 for Broadcast ProRes HQ Frame rate issues

I switched from Avid to work on a quick project with DSLR footage shot on the 5D Mark III at 29.97 psf which is not to be confused with 29.97i, a standard frame rate necessary for broadcast.   So the commercial spot was cut together, I punched in the proper settings (the very same settings that work with Avid 6.0+ and Final Cut Pro 7), and hit export.  When exporting either a Quicktime Animation or Pro Res file from Premiere Pro CS6, premiere creates a file with a faulty framerate, it comes out as 28.4 instead of 29.97.  I thought I was going crazy, but no, there are tons of documented experiences with 23.94 being 20-something, and on an on.  It seems as if Adobe did not do a good enough job with integrating the Pro Res codec into their software.  The only way I could get around it was to export to something else (Blu-ray H.264 at 29.97), and then re-encode that file to Pro Res HQ with either compressor or adobe media encoder.   The problem lies in exporting progressive footage as interlaced, it just completely screws up the frame rate.    The worst bit is that, I need Pro Res HQ for the distribution house for the commercial spots, they require the ProRes HQ MOV at 29.97i and if anything is off, I get charged for it.
Does anyone else have problems with Adobe Premiere lacking on the professional end? Or similar experience with this problem?
Just do a search for pro res frame rate issue premiere and you will see a lot of other users with the same issue.

  • Final Cut Pro dropped frame rate issue

Hi there, i currently shot a short film on the canon 5d mark II 30fps and i am trying to edit it in final cut studio 2. I have recently bought the new macbook pro 15inch 2gb module.
Now the canon footage is h.264 but when importing the clips into final cut pro 6 there is a lot of dropped frame rate issues but I thought this machine could handle HD footage?
Can someone more advanced than myself recommend what i am doing wrong or a work flow that i can work with to stop dropped frame rates and render times.
Last piece of information, the project will be entered in film festivals in the spring its only a 3 minute short and i have 5 folders of footage under 4gb each which was taken from the camera
    Thanks for your help.
    Michael

You are missing a huge conceptual point. If the file can not spool off of the hard drive fast enough, you get dropped frames. It isn't a processor or ram issue right now, it is a hard drive speed issue. Your system drive is overtaxed trying to run OSX, applications AND spool video. It just can't keep up. Changing the graphic card isn't going to help (and how do you change the card in a laptop?)
Get an external esata drive - with the new MacBookPro you'll need an esata Expresscard34 adapter for the computer to connect the drive. Firewire is not an option with that machine and USB2 will not cut it with high data rate formats like ProRes.
When you drop in the ProRes clip to the timeline and it tells you there is a mismatch, this means your preset for the timeline is something other than your clip. You WANT ProRes and you need the sequence to match your clip - tell the program to CHANGE the sequence to match the clip.
Video is not easy and it isn't inexpensive. Time to open up those manuals and your wallet!
    Good luck,

  • Dvcpro hd frame rate convertor

i shot 720p at 60fps but it plays normal in my sequence and i can't convert it to slow motion in my timeline using dvcpro hd frame rate convertor. the option isn't greyed out but does nothing when is select it. am i doing something wrong?

My timeline is ALSO 720p24 with most of my footage at 23.98. I have footage shot 60p that I can either cut in and render so that it matches the 24p look, OR I can use the DVCPRO HD frame rate converter and slow it down 2.5 times to make excellent slow motion.
It works. BUT...as I was saying, there is a bug in which for some reason it might NOT work in the current project you have. JUST THE CONVERSION. What I do is make a new project, drag the file to convert into that...convert it, drag it back and use it. Then all is well.

  • Video frame rate issues

When I watch flash videos (mostly in hd and from youtube or gametrailers) in full screen, the frame rate becomes noticably slower.  I have tried the 10.1 beta3 and this fixes the frame rate issue, but several times per video the image garbles.  Everything runs fine outside of fullscreen.  Otherwise I'm using Vista/Win7 64 bit with a 2.6 ghz Core 2 Duo, a radeon 4850 (latest drivers), and 2+ gigs of free memory.  When running 10.1 without hardware acceleration or earlier versions with default settings my cpu usage never goes above 20% on each core.  Does anyone know how to fix the image garblng or low framerates while in full screen?
    Thank you in advance!

  • Frame rate issues when displaying video on 50" Plasma

I've been using  my Mac Mini (Late 2009) as a media centre since I bought it in Dec 2009. Until recently it's been great working with everything I throw at it.
Over the last two weeks though I've noticed issues with lower frame rates and jerky video performance. When I try to watch a film full-screen on my 50" tv I get a much reduced frame rate to the point that I'm using it less and less as a media centre. When I run them windowed the frame rate issue is still present but less apparent than when I run it full screen.
During full-screen playback my processors are at 85%-90% capacity.
    System:
    Mac Mini 2009

    4gb Ram
    Nvidia 3400`
    Mac OSX 10.6.7

Connected to Panasonic 50" plasma via HDMI (Mini-display port to HDMI)
    Screen resolution 1600 x 900.
I've been trying it with the digital version of Tron Legacy (m4v format, 1.84GB, 854 x 480) and more simple .avi files ripped from my dvd collection and get the same result.
    Action Taken
    I've reinstalled the 10.6.7 combo
Run ONYX to update to preferences etc
Ran TechTools to check any memory issues
Looking for any tips as this is really confusing me. My next step is to wipe the entire system and start again but I only did this a couple of months ago so I'm not keen to try again.

yeah I'm kinda limited, working with video for the web and I'm making revisions as to what has been already posted. The H264s are the originals per say as we are using a screen capturing program to obtain the video, I could re export the originals at a truer format, but with the resources I'm given, its not truly the option I can afford to take. I've found a workaround through using imovie of all things, but I rather be in FCP. I've done some editing with h264s before and this is the first time I've seen this happen, it kind of reminds me of when I had an editor a few years back digitize video that was drop frame as non-drop.

  • Frame Rate Issue Exporting .mp4 using h.264 compression

I really like the h.264 codec, but I have to use Quicktime Conversion, instead of QT Movie, when I export. I get a 'Codec Error' when I try to export as a QT Movie. That is the first problem, but I work around it.
The frame rate issue comes up when I try to export at larger screen sizes like 640x480. I have no problems at 320x240, but when I move up to the larger screen sizes the resultant QT mp4 plays back at 1/2 the specified frame rate, no matter what frame rate I try. It is really bizarre.
I tried lowering the key frame number to reduce the processor load on playback, but this had no effect. This was a tip I picked up here.
I tried lowering the bit rate, too. The only thing that 'fixes' it is to go back to the lower screen size.
The problem is reproducible when the file is played on other (faster) computers.
    Any ideas?

  • DVCPRO HD Frame rate converter not working

    Hello all
I cant seem to get my frame rate converter to work. I shot the footage on my hvx200 at 720p30 and then put it in film mode and changed the frame rate to 60. Then I log and transfered it into FCP and when i go to convert it i keep getting the same message.

does anyone know why? I have gotten some footage to convert before with no problems.
    Thanks

All worked well last time I did this (late March), but upgraded to Leopard since then and brought all FCStudio apps up to date at the same time.
Looks like on import (log/transfer in FCP from Firestore) somehow the files are being flagged as having 'temporal compression', which can't be true if they're DVCPRO-HD, can it? Anyway the 'temporal compression' seems to be blocking the conform in CT, as well as the DFCPRO FRC in FCP.
So I tried importing the files from the Firestore thru an older version of FCP (5.1.4) that I have on my PowerBook (the problems described above are on my Mac Pro). I then copied these files out of the capture folder over to the Mac Pro, and sure enough: no problems with 'temporal compression'. The files were all marked as "maximum quality" and were allowed to be conformed from 60 to 24 in CTools, and have dupl frames removed using the FRC as needed.
So something appears to be broken with FCP 6.0.3 and how it imported this particular set of files on the Firestore.
I should note that if I hadn't tried to conform or FRC these files, I might never have noticed that there was a problem - they behaved as normal 720/60 files when just viewing them.

  • Speedgrade frame rate issue when loading reels. EDL from Premiere CS6

We have a short film, cut in Premiere (time base in sequence is set to 23.976 and display format is set at 24fps) I imported the EDL into Speedgrade for coloring. My Speedgrade edit settings have a base frame rate of 24fps and the option "both edits have current base frame rate as set above or within the EDL itself" is selected. However when I go to load reels from desktop I am getting an error that says "some of the reels do not match your current frame rate." In turn this is causing our exported Quicktime (TIFF uncompressed at 24fps) to not sync up with our audio back in premiere. It looks as if we are missing frames.
Is this an EDL issue with Premiere? Or is it a Speedgrade frame rate settings issue? Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Shot at 4K on Red Scarlet, at 24fps.  Edited in Premiere CS6.

I don't have had problems if the frame ratio is the same in all process, and in this case it isn't. If the Scarlet footage is to 24 fps, why to use 23.976 in Premiere?

  • FCE4 and frame rate issues

    Hi All,
I'm totally new to FCE and video editing in general, and have dived in with two feet. I'm trying to edit some screencasts I have produced. My main aim is to cut out dead sections of the screencast and add a voiceover to them. I tried various screencast-specific bits of software, but they didn't seem to allow much in terms of editing, and one (Camtasia Mac) decided to eat a day's worth of work by corrupting the saved file.
So, I thought I'd grab a copy of FCE and give that a try. I've bought Tom Wolsky's FCE4 Editing Workshop Book (whose name lead me to this forum). I was also quite interested in the voiceover feature that FCE has, as that should come in useful as that is the main reason I'm editing these screencasts in the first place.
The main issue's I've been having is that FCE is intended for DV editing, and I'm trying to edit a screencast, so I'm going slightly against the flow here. e.g. my screencast was captured using QT X at 1024x768. Which FCE can't deal with (I only found out after buying FCE... I head FCP can deal with non-DV standard frame sizes, but it beyond my budget). So I've been using MPEG streamclip pretty successfully to convert the H.264 source into Apple Intermediate scaled down and padded to 1280x720. I can then export from FCE back into Apple Intermediate and into MPEG Streamclip to crop off the pillarboxes and save to the final output format.
I've come to the conclusion that as long as I can get my source material into what FCE expects from a DV cam then it seems to handle it OK.
Some of the test clips I imported into FCE seemed to work fine, but then the longer full length source (about an hour) had trouble. The speed had gone all funny. I looks like the screencast source is at around 4.6fps and FCE decided that it should really be 46fps! One of the test clips appeared to be 5fps, and FCE seemed to be OK with that and kept it at 5fps.
I'm currently re-converting the source with MPEG Streamclip to 29.97fps and hopefully that will import OK (even though it is taking ages to convert and I'm writing this sitting here patiently!).
So was wondering if anyone know what the deal is with frame rates in FCE. Why does it sometimes seem happy with my low 5fps rate, and sometimes it decides it should be 10x faster. And does anyone else have any further comments or suggestions/tips about using FCE for editing screencasts?
    Thanks,
    Matt

Tom, thanks for the help. I'm currently running it through Streamclip now as I type. Hopefully that should sort it. I guess screen capture software use a lower frame rate as they don't need to have a high frame rate usually for the stuff they are doing.
    -Matt
PS. btw... great book! Certainly helped me get orientation around FCE. Definately needed as I had no experience of video editing and the workflows and terminology is all foreign!

  • Hey there, Graphics/Frame Rate Issue

    Hey there,
I have a late (December) 2011 Macbook Pro 15in, 2.5ghz, 4gb ram notebook. I have noticed within the past few weeks that my frame rates when playing games has started stuttering. Sometimes its buttery smooth and I am extremely happy, but now, more times than not, the frame rates stutter all over the place. This makes playing games like Counter Strike or StarCraft II extremely unpleasant. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this issue? I have the
AMD Radeon HD 6770M built in that I make sure to have enabled prior to playing any games.
    Thanks for your help!

How RAM intensive are these games? You can open Activity Monitor in your Utilities folder and see if it may be due to RAM or even hard drive speed. If it's due to RAM, you can always increase the RAM in your computer and if the hard drive is being accessed frequently for page ins and outs, you might want to upgrade your hard drive as well.
But I'd first look to see if the games are memory hogs.
    Regards,
    Clinton

    Hi,
I'm editing a sequence of footage shot on a P2 cam- set at the DVCPRO 720p preset and every once in a while, I drop a clip in that plays fine in the viewer but plays as though it has a weird frame rate when dropped into my sequence. The same part of the clip can be dropped somewhere else and will play fine in the sequence- ANY HELP would be greatly appreciated.
    On a Macbook Pro
    4gigs Ram
    FCP 6.0.6

    720p...what? 23.98? 59.94? What were the settings on the camera? 720p24, 720p60, 720p 24PN?
    What are your sequence settings?
What is the weird frame rate of the clip in the sequence? 45fps? 22fps?

  • Flash frame rate issue

    Hi Guys,
I just bought a new asus lap top with i7 2630 processor and of course i wanted to stress it with flash 3d right away to see how it perform.
I am using away3d for flash player 10 and i build test app that has one sphere as a container ant for each vertice i on that sphere i added another small sphere.Of course i bumped up segments on parent sphere so that i have as much verticeses. When i build it the flash player allocate about 400mb of memory and frame rate drops to 1 frame per second. Now i understand 3d business in flash is heavy on processor because flash is not utilizing GPU yet but when i open task manager my CPU usage isn't 100 percent. its about 50% all the time.
This is how it looks like
There are 1562 small spheres on the image above
I don't understand why frame rate is so small when CPU is not working 100%. Mybe this is an windows issue or fact that flash allocated to many memory.
    I have 8gb of RAM.
Or just flash is not designed for such a thing. I just don't understand why it performs badly when processor is not working 100%
Maybe the problem is how away3d works. I have no clue and don't know where to start search for solution.

I guess there's a few issues. Adding concurrency/threads means that there has to be some sort of thread synchronisation to allow atomic updates to some datastructures without which the system would be unstable. It can be a lot of work to add thread synchronisation to the existing player. There doesn't seem to be much call for it amongst flash developers, but surely that day must come. For code not written to take advantage of multiple threads, adding thread support might actually degrade performance.
    It's not a small project.

  • Frame Rate Issue on ATV3

I've had my ATV3 for about 8 months now. I use it very often to stream HD content from my computer. I do this over iTunes via Home Sharing. It was working great, but recently I've noticed it's suffering from jerky frame rates. It's not constant, but when there's lots of movement on screen, the screen stutters occasionally. This problem does not occur on netflix or for lower quality content over homesharing. It's a recent problem insofar as the same videos would play fine for the 7ish months of usage.
It's not a buffering problem either. The movie has loaded, the screen just stutters in sections of videos with lots of movement. Anyone have any ideas on what the problem might be? Is my ATV3 wearing out from only 7 months of (extensive) use? Perhaps it's related to some updates? Afaik the issue did seem to coincide somewhat with installing some updates, although I cannot say for sure. Thoughts? Potential solutions?

Found this, applied it - and it works.

If you have one of the original Apple TV 3rd generations you can downgrade to a firmware released in June. Apple released a small revision in 2013 that they didn't announce. You can't even tell by looking at the ATV.
    http://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/01...minor-upgrade/
If you have the 3,1 version Apple is still signing an older version software released in June. Google "Apple TV Firmware Links" and it'll be something with "xxx.icj.me/xxx/xxxx" for an address. You can get the older version from there. It's the one with a green check mark (6.1.4 is what it's listed as) I'm not going to link the site because I don't think Apple allows that on their own forums. Just downgraded my ATV and it's working like before now. You'll need a microusb and the power cord.
    1. Open iTunes
    2. Connect ATV via MicroUSB
    3. Connect Power Cord
    4. When ATV shows in iTunes hold 'Option' and click restore then point it to the old FW you downloaded.
Worked for me. Hope it works for some other people."
Not the most elegant solution but a solution none the less.

  • Frame Rate Issue With Footage Shot on HVX

I just shot something using the HVX and the 100Gb Firestore. The assistant cameraman set the firestore to make quicktime files to be brought into Final Cut. We shot most of our footage at high frame rates. When we watched already shot files through the camera's LCD screen, things appear in slow motion. However, when I bring the quicktime files into Final Cut, they play at normal speed. How do I convert the frame rate to what we shot at? Is there some import tool that does this automatically?
