DVCPRO HD (P2 from Panasonic AG-HVX200)

OK, I know this has been asked like a thousand times, but there's one little nuance I couldn't find. Obviously, FCE can't read P2 media natively (which, in my opinion, totally belies the purpose of the Log and Transfer function). But, if I install the codec, will it then be able to interface like FCP Studio? Or will it still not work? Also, some people have been mentioning converting the format to the Apple Intermediate Codec so it can be used in FCE...how can I do that? What program does this? Does it read the P2 card (MXF) media?
Scenario: I have a guy shooting in the field and all he wants to do is be able to see the footage to double check that it is indeed there before he clears the cards...all he has is a MacBook and FCE 4. What can we do to enable him to view the P2 footage?
Thanks

The purpose of the Log and Transfer window is to ingest AVCHD.
Assuming your talking about P2 media that's DVCPRO HD then you'd need Final Cut Pro to convert the media to AIC. That's the only way the codec is legally available. Even if you have the codec because you have FCP installed on the same machine, as I do, you cannot ingest DVCPRO HD into FCE. It's not available in the L&T window. ProRes is. But you can't make a ProRes sequence in FCE.
I can't tell you whether FCE would see the card letting you check the material in the L&T window. You'd have to try it.

  • Live capturing from Panasonic AG-HVX200 using Final Cut and MacBook Pro

Does anyone know if the MacBoko Pro using Final Cut can capture live 1080i video from a Panasonic AG-HVX200 to an external firewire hard drive?

Great info. I'll get on those other forums.
Not that it is an 'issue,' but to answer the question I was INITIALLY thinking of getting a laptop just to capture video, and edit on my desktop. But I see that the advice of getting the biggest baddest laptop would be a better idea and I've read others say that being able to edit 'on the road,' is a great potential.
I checked out the only tested and approved by Panasonic Firestore and it's the FOCUS FS-100 that comes standard with a 100GB hard drive that provides 1.5 hours of DVCPRO HD recording time with a list price of $2,195.00.
(If using PAL, you need the PAL version)
Other than the valuable other forums mentioned here, I found a good site for FAQ's for the Mac/AG-HVX-200/FCP, at: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/faq/p2faq .htm
These FAQ's, above, say that "going directly into a PC is possible, but it may fail to record some frames per second. This depends on the performance of PC. So we do not recommend this method."
There is a rebate if buying the USA warrentied camera before the end of the year: a free 8GB P2 card (advertised as a $1,200 value)
I think this answers all my questions about this topic. Thanks everyone for the info and the patience.

  • Panasonic AG-HVX200

Pricing is all over the place on this unit:
    http://www.shopcartusa.com/Product/AGHVX200/Electronics~TVVideo~Camcorders/Panasonic_AG-HVX200/PT_Y/?iccampID=98
$1599 - $5000+ At first I thought it was packages with and without P2 cards, but apparently not. But what the heck is going on with these prices? P2 is way over priced considering the technology involved in a P2 card, flash memory and a PCMCIA interface doesn't add up to $1200 in my book (this is off the shelf stuff).
I'm not there yet (need a lot more time with FCP and just making better material), but I'm starting the planning stage just in case I find myself worthy of such equipment.
I'm sure by the time I'm actually ready to buy, there will be another unit I'll need to research.

  • Transfer of mini-DV tapes from Panasonic NV-GS120 to MacBook Pro via FireWire port (9-pin)

I am new to Mac and love it. I would like to transfer my old mini-DV tapes from Panasonic NV-GS120 to my MacBook Pro via FireWire port (9-pin), but am not sure which port to use on the video camera. Reading from the top on the Panasonic video camera there are three options: a "mini-usb" port, a "remote/mic (plug in power)" [not likely] and finally a "A/V out phones" jack entry [which I use for viewing the tapes on the TV screen via the jack cable ending up in a red, yellow and white cable to plug into TV.
I have read Bengt Wärleby's excellent instructions and am ready to buy the FireWire cable (9-pin in one end - Mac), but I am not sure if it is the mini-usb or jack-stick exit of the video camera. Or, indeed, if there is talk about an external A/V box needed to decode and transfer the digital tapes to iMovie on the Mac.
Any clarification is highly appreciated. Thanks for all suggestions.
    JLens

The port you're looking for is the DV Port (in your manual it's marked as control component #55). I looked up your camera and it does have it. That's the port where the firewire should fit. Hope to have helped you.

  • Import from Panasonic DMC-FZ28 Lumix

Trying to import from Panasonic DMC-FZ28 Lumix but the only import option is the
in-built camera on my MPB (10.5.7).
I can see the camera in the Finder window and can click on various photos.
When the camera was connected to the USB port and select the setting as PC Connection.
Is there something else I need to do in order for iMovie to see this camera ?
    Thank you,

If you are using iPhoto, import the photos into iPhoto. Then, in iMovie, start a new Project and name it (or open and old project). Open the Photo Browser in iMovie, and drag the photos in from there.
If you are not using iPhoto, drag the jpegs from your camera to a folder in the Finder.
Open iMovie. Start a new project and name it (or open and old project). Drag and drop the photos from the Finder window into your project.

  • Can I use Final Cut Express 4.0.1. to import movies from Panasonic VDR-D250?

Can I use Final Cut Express 4.0.1. to import movies from Panasonic VDR-D250 via USB 2.0? How? (page in handbook?)
Further specifications of this older camera:
    USB 2.0
DVD-RAM (cannot be inserted in my MBP!)
    50-PAL (signal)
    MPEG2
    Dolby Digital
I want to use FCE if possible but maybe could try to install the software of this camera on Windows virtual XP also on my MBP?

I forward an answer of Panasonic (written in German):
So Panasonic does not offer a software which is compatible with Apple!
    Betriebssysteme vorgesehen:
    - Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional
    - Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    - Microsoft Windows XP Professional

  • Can't import MP4 from Panasonic GH4 into Premiere CS6

Can't import 50Mbps MP4 from Panasonic GH4 into Premiere CS6 but I can import it into CC. Any workarounds to get it into CS6?
Another odd thing is that I can import the 50Mbps MOV from the GH4 into CS6 but can't play it using Windows Media Player (for quick review before importing) like I can the MP4. If someone knows how to get the MOV from the GH4 to play with Windows Media Player I'd start using that format instead of the MP4. Odd thing is that the 50Mbps MOV recorded with my GH3 can play in Windows Media Player.

I updated to the latest version CS6 and that solved the MP4 import problem. Still working on the other issue.

  • Panasonic AG-HVX200 or other?

    Hi,
Appreciate any feedback on getting a new camera in the $1000-1500 range. Read some good things about the Panasonic AG-HVX200 and wondering if any one has any thoughts on its use with Final Cut Express. Thanks in advance for you help.
    - Kevin

That's a $5,000 camera. I tried the Panasonic as well as the Sony Z1U and I liked the picture quality and color saturation of the Sony better so I got the Sony.
If you're looking in the $1,000 to $1,500 range then you're looking at consumer cameras. I'd suggest checking out the Sony HDR-HC7 or the Canon HV10.

I'm guessing your files were MTS or something else, as I've never heard of an MPL file. You should ask your question over in the iMovie forum as this one deals specifically with Final Cut Express.

  • Settings to import video from Panasonic T700 camcorder

    Hello Forum,
this is my first post here but I think I'll post often, mainly asking question at first – and here's my first question:
What are the best settings for importing the footage from Panasonic T700 camcorder into the Final Cut 7?
I would appreciate a detailed answer or a good reference to an existing thread here or to existing documents, if possible.
Thank you very much for your help.
    Dimitri Vorontzov

    Hi Tom,
I was just reading some of your post from earlier threads. You're right, it's TM700. My mistake.
Please let me explain my challenge: I'm on this forum as a translator for a non-English speaking videographer who uses a collection of new camcorders, including Panasonic TM700. I'm relatively familiar with Final Cut Pro but not familiar with TM700. I understand that he's shooting ACHDV files in the 1080p60 format, and he needs to be able to edit that footage using FCP 7 and then output the result on a Blu-Ray disk.
    He asked me to ask here on the Forum, what is the most effective way to get the 1080p footage from Panasonic TM700 to FCP;
He also wants to know if there's a way to create an easy setup for a sequence.
What would be the best codec?
Any other questions I should ask here to understand the topic completely?
Should I make a new thread with the correct title so that other people find it easier to find the information?
    Would appreciate your advice.
    Best regards,
    Dimitri Vorontzov

  • Can not download videos from Panasonic ZS20

Running iPhoto 8.1.2 ('09) on Lion.  Imports photos OK from Panasonic-ZS20, but will not retrieve video clips from camera.

That camera shoots AVCHD, which is a format designed for people who want to edit video, so you really should be bringing that into iMovie.
Or, the most recent versions of iPhoto 11 has limited AVCHD support.
