DVCPRO HD Problem... MXF or Final Cut Pro?

Hi Guys,
Was just on a shoot yesterday and the strangest thing happened to me. I was using the HVX200 and filming at 720p25. The camera, workflow and recording mode I have used quite a few times. However after bringing in the first P2 folder into final cut something very odd was happening. Once I used log and transfer to bring in the MXFs as Quicktimes it messed the video up completely, I mean completely.
The audio seemed to be fine but the video was seemingly in faster motion and not syncing with the audio. I checked the format properties and it was all present and correct, 25fps, DVCPRO HD, was very strange. I then noticed on some clips that it was ending before it was meant to. I.e. when filming I remember their speech being longer but it was as if the clip was stopping dead way before that. The fortunate thing is this only happened on the first 'reel' (P2 Folder) everything else is fine.
After searching around a bit on the internet I came across Shane Ross' blog entry
http://lfhd.blogspot.com/2007/12/native-mxf-support-in-fcpsorta.html
There he talks of the fact that someone on this forum found that they could import the MXF directly into final cut. So I thought I would give that a try. An to my relief I found that when I brought the MXFs in they were fine, syncing was ok, video wasn't messing up, the clips were the length they were meant to be. So for the purposes of this project which has to be done quite soon I will edit the MXFs for that first reel.
My question is (finally) what happened?! Did FCP unwrap the MXF improperly because the original MXF seems fine? How can this be avoided in the future?
Thanks for your help in advance!
James

Yeah James...I said it in the blog post...installing P2CMS installs an MXF codec that somehow unlocks this.
I still prefer to LOG and TRANSFER...because your audio and video get tied automatically...and you can rename the clips, mark IN and OUT and choose only what you want...lotsa reasons.

  • Problem with opening Final Cut Pro X

I had just moved the 'Final Cut Pro' folder with the events and projects from movies into my own folder. I also had just added another desktop (Dunno if that is part of the problem).
Since then, when I open FCP, it has a message saying 'The selected location is already in use.' 'The storage location "BlakeHay48" on this computer is already in use by "BlakeHay48" on "Blakes-iMac". To access the location, quit Final Cut Pro on "Blakes-iMac" or remove the location.' I pressed okay and then also found all of my projects and events had gone. I thought at first it could just be because I opened it in another desktop, even though that shouldn't happen, but then when I tried to create a project or an event it would say 'The operation couldn’t be completed. Cannot allocate memory'
Then I realised it could be because I moved the files, so I moved them back, but nothing changed. I have deleted the app and re-installed it, but nothing is working. Can someone please help me?
    Thanks-

Thank you so much. Can't believe I didn't think to restart it. Thanks

I am getting an error saying "The application Final Cut Pro quit unexpectctedly. The problem may have been caused by the Lithium plug-in." I have repaired permissions and reinstalled Final Cut, neither helped. I am running OS X Leopard 10.5.2 and Final Cut Pro version 6.0.3.

Please if anyone can give me so step by step process or a number to call a support line I would appreciate it. I cut video as a part time job and need this ASAP. Thanks - FooManFilms.com

  • Problems Exporting from Final Cut Pro

I am currently attempting to export my FCP video into a Soundtrack Pro Multitrack Project. A strange thing occurs. It doesn't export my video completely. Dissolves that were in the FCP timeline do not show up in the Sountrack video and some edits from the FCP timeline are either extended or cut short for a considerable number of seconds. Any ideas why this is happening? Any suggestion no matter how small would be appreciated.

Sorry for the confusion, when I export it as a low quality version I use QT conversion, set it to MPEG-4 then I go to options and set the image size, data rate, then I change it so it is supposed to maintain the aspect ratio using letterboxing. When its done exporting it has not maintained the aspect ratio.
The full quality version I just export as a QT movie using current settings, when I do this it goes to about 50% then Final Cut closes.
I hope that makes more sense.

Everytime I go to capture, a box comes up that says "General Error" with no error code. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong or what's wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Same problem with me. J just bought a macbook pro 2,33 Hz.
When I capture on my FCP 5.0.4 there is no problem but when I push the " esc" button to close the capture he FCP crashes. Help me I bought the Macbook pro to edit on location and now I can't capture.

  • Freezing and Shut Down Problems Exporting in Final Cut Pro X

I've finished a film of over an hour in legnth.  I've got an iMac and each time I try to export, either my computer freezes up or it shuts down.  I'd like to send my film off to festivals. Any advice? Would compressor help with this?  Have I missed a step in the export process?

The trial is a full-flavored actual version of FCPX - which doesn't support your OS.
How did you manage to download it, anyhow?!

  • How to import MXF files to Final Cut Pro with smooth editing

Summary: Follow this tutorial to learn how to import and edit MXF files in Final Cut Pro by converting MTS to FCP native format.
If you have a Panasonic P2, Canon XF or Sony XDCAM series camcorder,
you may be familiar with Material eXchange Format (MXF). Though MXF is a
great video format to record high-definition videos, it is not easy to
use in that they are not natively supported by most NLE systems like
Final Cut Pro. In order to import MXF to FCP for editing, the easy workaround is to transcode MXF files to FCP compatible video formats.
Along with some help from a top MXF Converter, it can be done. To
help those who wanna edit MXF files in FCP without problems, here I
share with you a simple guide on how to convert MXF files to edit in
Final Cut Pro 6/7 or FCP X.
First of all, downloading the App- Brorsoft MXF Converter for Mac
Overall, the program is a professional yet easy-to-use MXF Converter
on Mac (Mavericks included) which can not only convert XF100, Canon
C300, XF105 and XF305, Panasonic P2 recorded MXF files, but also provide
simple video editing functions for you. The MXF to FCP Converter not
only can convert MXF to ProRes for FCP, but also can transcode MXF
videos for editing in Avid MC, Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, FCE, etc.
Just download it and follow the tutorial below to get the work done.
Transcoding (P2) MXF files to ProRes for Final Cut Pro 6/7/X
    1. Import MXF files to the converter
Launch the best MXF to FCP Converter, and then click the “add files” button to browse and import MXF videos from your camcorder or hard drive.
    2. Select FCP editable format
Click the Format bar, and move mouse cursor to choose “Final Cut Pro > Apple ProRes 422 (*.mov)” as output format.
    Tips:
    a. Settings- click to set video
    resolution(1920×1080/1440×1080/1280×720/720×480), bitrate (from 1Mbps to
    20Mbps), frame rate (24p/30p)
    b. Editor (next to “Add” icon)- click to set deinterlace, trim, crop, add effect, attach subtitles, etc
    3. Start transcoding MXF video to FCP
Click “Convert” button to start converting MXF files to Apple ProRes
MOV for FCP 6/7/X under Mac OS. Once the MXF to ProRes 422 conversion
is done, you can transfer MXF footage into Final Cut Pro (X) for editing
    smoothly on Mac with ease.

  • Does Final Cut Pro offer native support for DVCPRO HD 720p25?

I would like to online a DVCPRO HD project on a Final Cut Pro suite with an HD i/o card, but I just wanted to make sure that the latest Final Cut Pro offers support for DVCPRO HD 720p25 before making the jump.

Thanks for the info. I will check if the production company's Blackmagic HD card supports DVCPRO 720p25.
Just for your information, we have offline edited on an Avid MC Adrenaline. We have had the biggest problems ingesting the media since we shot on a Varicam at 25p and the Avid wouldn't accept firewire. So we ended up cutting in 30i. Which now ***** since the online is a pain.
It seems like we will export an EDL per video track from the Avid, then hopefully find a company or a person who will convert our 30fps EDL to 25fps via the software EDLMax24. Then import the EDLs into a Final Cut Pro HD suite with a Blackmagic HD card via HD-SDI, and online from the HD AJ-1400 deck. And hopefully that will work.
The only outstanding thing is to find someone with EDLMAX24 since it retails at 600USD.

  • HOW to temporarily use Broadcast monitoring work on snow leopard OS X v10.6.8  for  FINAL CUT PRO X

thx, macmacmac give me prompt. He had an interesting trick for getting the OS X Lion 'only' plugin to work on Snow Leopard
To install the plugin on Snow Leopard OS X 10.6.8 you have to temporarily change your system version number to Lion 10.7.2!
    1. Go to HD:/System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist
    2. Copy the file to the Desktop
    3. Open the original with a text editor and change the string value of 'ProductVersion' and 'ProductUserVisibleVersion' to '10.7.2'.
    4. Save & Overwrite.
I suddenly thought  Apple said that Broadcast monitoring work on Lion OS X v10.7.3.I change system version number at once! Changing 10.6.8 snow leopard system version number to Lion 10.7.2!
ok,no problem. Restart final cut pro x,A/V output has appeared in FINAL CUT PRO X preferences and Window Menu
    Enjoy it.HAHA!:cheer:

    thanks for the tip fan!

  • Final Cut Pro sluggish with G-Speed drives

We are having major problems with our Final Cut Pro system. We are running 6.01 on a dual 3.0 Ghz Intel with 8 gigs of ram. We have two G-Speed running of off SCSI. Whenever the scratch disk is set to one of the drives Final Cut Pro can barely open a project. Any ideas? I think we need to rebuild the system to truly troubleshoot this but if anyone has any advice that would be great.
    Thanks!

With the G-Speed drives still mounted we tried running a job from the G-Raid that our client's project came in on and we had the same trouble we were having with the G-Speed. Since we are only working with DVCPROHD we thought it wouldn't be a problem but we still encountered a slow open.
When we first started the project we copied the files from the G-Raid to the G-Speed drives. We then copied the project file to the desktop and first encountered a slow open.
The project did open faster by accessing the project file from within the folder where the files were located on the G-Speed. For some reason that worked better.
I will see if moving the thumbnail cache helps our FCP woes.

  • Final Cut Pro 7 not recognizing Sony HDV Deck on older 2008 version MacPro's

I am trying to connect a Sony HDV deck to Final Cut Pro version 7 on an older 2008 version MacPro.  The problem was with the firewire mini port on the back i believe because i used a different deck which was the same model - but the only difference was it had a firewire 400 port instead of mini firewire port.  Anyway, the deck with the 400 firewire port worked for logging and capturing, etc... (this also worked when i re-tested it on the 2008 MacPro)  Im wondering if anyone else has had problems with the firewire mini port on the Sony HDV deck because it seems like almost every HDV deck i have with mini firewire has problems connecting to final cut pro or any editing application.  I know now that the deck i had in question the mini port is not working correctly but is there a way to fix this or prevent the cable - deck from terminating the connection with the mini cable being used.  I dont need an answer to the deck problem because i figured it out but just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem.  Thank you...
    Kyle

    >I dont need an answer to the deck problem ... just wondering if anyone has some insight on this deck problem
So you don't want an answer, just insight. OK, I'll give it a go.  I've had several Sony VTRs with the 4pin Firewire port (proper name for what you refer to as "mini"), which is the same type of port that most DV and HDV cameras use as well.  One of the main things you need to be wary of is plugging in and unplugging a Firewire cable while either the device or the computer is powered on.  I know that marketing hype claims that Firewire is hot swap-able, but it really isn't safe to do so.  The pins in both the 4 pin connector as well as the 6 pin connectors are very close together and if they aren't aligned exactly right with the socket, can easily cause arching and damage a Firewire port on either or both ends.  Is that the kind of insight you were looking for?

  • Final Cut Express vs. Final Cut Pro

I assume a topic like this has already been discussed, but I would like to know what to do in my scenario.
I'm currently a high school junior, and I'm taking a media course in school where I have learned to use Final Cut Pro. Next year, I'll be taking it again, still using Final Cut Pro, and I may want to do some editing work at home, though it is not required.
The problem there is Final Cut Pro is very expensive, probably isn't sold without everything else in Studio box set, and I only have a 1.42 GHz SuperDrive eMac, with 1 GB RAM.
I've seen Final Cut Express, and I feel it might be the best thing to get at a reasonable price. I want to start making video projects outside of school, but iMovie does not allow me to do much. Plus, I won't be using HD, so there's no issue of it there. Could someone tell me what are the pros and cons in using FCP over FCE, and what will I not be able to do in FCE?

I think there's a lot of info on this subject on the FCE page on the Apple website.
This page: http://www.apple.com/finalcut/index.html should do the trick for you.
Bottom line is if you're going to be working in DV or HDV FCE should be more than enough for your needs, at least till you're making enough $$$ to upgrade. I know if FCE had been available when I left school I would have had the best tools around.
Have you looked into the Educational edition of FCS, if you can't bear the downgrade? Might be what you need.
Best of luck in your career.
