Guy,
Try these two things:
1) Go to the "Go" menu and click on Utilities.
Open Disk Utility.
Select your hard drive and click "repair permissions."
Close/quit Disk Utility.
2) Click (once) on your CD or DVD.
Go to the "File" menu and click on Get Information
Scroll down to Ownership and Permissions
Change to "read and write"
You will need to put in your password.
Beyond these things, I am not completely sure what you are trying to do. Write to a CD-RW? If so, you will need to use Disk Utility to erase it first.

  • MSI P6N SLI V2 does not boot up from cd/dvd and few other problems

    HI
I just bought a computer P6N SLI V2 + E6750. It has following problem. It does not boot from cd.
I have Sata HD. CD/DVD is installed to IDE as a master.
I have done settings in bios so that First boot is cd/dvd and second is sata HD. Anyhow it still goes to the hd and stars windows.
I was only able to boot up from cd when I disabled hd from boot sequency. Meaning I left only cd/dvd there.
Hopefully you pro's can help me.
Then there is another problem. Windows is telling me that it found new pci device. I do not know what device. I have only Graphig card (geforce 8800 gts) installed into pci-E. Drivers and software are also installed, I assume proberly. How to find out what windows thinks it found.
Third problem is onboard soundcard. I cannot get any sound out from the machine. I have downloaded driver from realtek, but still no sound.
Unfortunatelly I do not have original software for motherboard. Only the latest from MSI website.
    Hopefully someone can help me.
    thanks.

About bootup, i dont know yet.
To find out what windows found, look in devicemanager.
To go there go to controlpanel, system then choose devicemanager.
There you can see what's installed.
Last, your soundcards needs to be enabled in bios, under integrated peripherals there should be a line with "onboard sound", enable this and sound should work, unless its broken.

  • FCP X and Importing Media problems

I currently have the Macbook Pro Retina (running Mountain Lion), A Sony HDR-PJ10e Camcorder and Final Cut Pro X and am having increasing problems trying to import the video shot on the camcorder.
Prior to installing ML, the camcorder would be recognised within FCP, but refused to recognise any of the footage, indeed if I tried to import the MTS files direct, they are greyed out which I have previously read is a known issue of sorts and that only import from camera can be used (but is not working in this case)
I have tried encoding the MTS files using Adobe Media Encoder, i have tried various formats but the only only that FCP will recognise is quicktime MOV files.
What can possibly be causing this problem?
I should add that the footage is shot in 1080p, but even down converted to an MPEG2 file (be that .mpg or the split .m2v and wav files) FCP still refuses to recognize these as a valid format as they are greyed out when trying to "import files"
Any help would be appreciated but I have to confess to being a relative novice to all things mac.

Prior to upgrading to ML, the camcorder was recognised but refused to import anything using the method you describe (I already tried that).  I was able to make an archive from the camcorder but it will not even open that archive to iport anything.
Unfortunately, since the upgrade to ML when the camcorder connects to the computer, the PMB software crashes.  The camcorder is still available in Finder after pmb has crashed, but it is no longer recognised in FCP as it was prior to the upgrade to ML.
The camcorder has internal memory and the ability to use a card, but everything is currently stored on the internal memory, everything is in the exact same format, frame rates etc...

  • Eth0 missing, Xorg won't start, and removable media problems

When I got back from vacation last night, I turned on my computer and several problems arose. I tried starting X with startx like I usually do but it wouldn't come up. I tried opening elinks to google the problem only to find that the internet wouldn't work. A quick ifconfig showed that eth0 was missing.
I googled the problem with my netbook and found this thread. It sounds like the OP couldn't see eth0 right after he installed Arch Linux, but eth0 worked fine for me about 10 days ago. Also, my motherboard is an Asus M2A-VM rather than a P8P67. Nonetheless, I copied the driver he linked to to a flash drive. But when I plugged the flash drive into my desktop, it didn't show up in /dev/. In fact only two of the thee hard drives I have installed showed up. The two that show up are SATA and the one that doesn't is an IDE. Not to mention the flash drive that didn't show up.
For further testing I booted an old Ubuntu Jaunty live CD I found laying around. In Ubuntu eth0 does show up. As for the hard drives, it looks the same as it does in Arch Linux.
I think I may possibly have a bad motherboard due to devices not showing up in /dev/, but I want to be completely sure. I want to get a new computer either way but for now I want to focus on at least getting eth0 and X working again. Any ideas on how I can get that driver over to my desktop or how I can get X started?

No, I didn't follow the beginners install guide. I just installed Arch Linux then installed the packages that I wanted.

  • GNOME 2.28 and external media

I have this little issue with GNOME. It might not even be a GNOME specific thing, but I don't recall it happening before I had a DE installed.
I enter a DVD, and GNOME will create a mountpoint for it based on the DVD label. So if I insert the Iron Man movie, I get /media/IRON_MAN_DVD. If I insert an ancient Duke Nukem 3D CD I get /media/DN3D.
What I would prefer is if /media/cd was always the mountpoint for a CD or DVD and that /media/usb was always the mountpoint for a USB disk. Trouble is, I can't think of a way to achieve this.
So does anyone out here have any kind of solution to this diabolical and downright evil problem?

Same problem here on an x86 machine. New removable devices are recognized by devkit-disks (at least devkit-disks --monitor lists the device). Somehow the information about new removable (block) devices is not propagated to the gvfs daemon (gvfs-mount --monitor does not show any events). The problem does not occur on my x86_64 machine. There the events about new devices are propagated correctly to the gvfs daemon and the removeable devices appear automaticaly on the desktop. The output of devkit-disks --monitor differ slightly for the two machines.
    The x86 machine:
    devkit-disks --monitor
Monitoring activity from the disks daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
    added: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb
    added: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb1
    changed: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb
    The x86_64 machine:
    devkit-disks --monitor
Monitoring activity from the disks daemon. Press Ctrl+C to cancel.
    added: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb
    added: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb1
    job-changed: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb1
    changed: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb
    changed: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb1
    job-changed: /org/freedesktop/DeviceKit/Disks/devices/sdb1
I could not figure out the source for the different outputs. Is there already a solution for this problem? Please contact me if you need more debugging information.
    Thanks in advance!
Btw. both machines have most recent (stable) packages installed and the packages 'hal', 'devicekit-disks' and 'gvfs' have the same version numbers on both mashines.

Boot off your *original* Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD. Some have it on the Disc #2.

  • DVD dual layer blank media problem

    Hi,
I used HP branded media without any problems in the past. Now I got a roll of Ritek dual layer DVDs and most unfortunately the drive ejects them as if they were incompatible.
Does anybody know if Apple keeps a page with compatible media? Or is there any indication which brands would work and which don't? The dual layer media is still quite expensive and I don't know if I can convince the retailer to take back opened disks...
    Best
    Jurgen

If they're DVD-R DL discs then there's the problem. They should be DVD+R DL.

  • Problems with DVD+R DL Media

Ok, got the new iMac G5 and it is awesome. Was testing the dual layer DVD burning capabilities this weekend and ran into some problems.
    1) I had 2 Verbatim 8.5GB dual layer DVDs left over from last Christmas' attempt at using the LaCie drrive on my iMac. I burned 2 copies of a commercial DVD backup without ANY problems. My iMac worker PERFECTLY!
    ...then...
    2) I went to Fry's Electronics and bought a 15-pack spindle of Memorex 8.5GB dual layer DVDs. The drive in my new iMac took a while to recognize the discs but would not accept them when I attempted to burn.
Does anyone out there have a similar experience? Are Memorex DL DVDs not a good brand of disc for the new iMac drive? What other discs work well (I know for a fact that Verbatim discs work VERY well, but they aren't widely available here in Orange County, CA)???
    Chris

Most Memorex media is second class stuff and I prefer TDK. Although I do not have a DL burner, I have never had a coaster in several years.
A good website to check out media quality - as well as who really makes the media, not just who markets it - is here. My experience generally mirrors what they list.

    so what
    greetings from berlin

    Greetings,
It appears to be a FW problem, possibly flaky case, or drive problem.
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • IDVD problem burning and multiplexing - gets stuck but ejects the DVD and the DVD doesn't play

I am having trouble burning DVDs.  Everything seems to be working fine during the iDVD project creation.  I can watch the movie and select scenes within iDVD.  Then, when I go to burn the DVD, it gets stuck at the burning/multiplexing stage - the wheel just keeps spinning and says there is about a minute left.  Yet it ejects the DVD and the DVD won't play when inserted into a DVD player.  It will show the intro and the scene selection pages but when you click on one of the scenes, it gets stuck and doesn't play.  I have already uninstalled and reinstalled iDVD.  The problem persists.  It seems like the burner itself is the problem.  What can I do to fix it?  I have Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 with a 2.8 GHzintel Core 2 Duo and iDVD version 7.0.4.

    Hi
Multiplexing error is a very complex problem due to many things (long long list following) - one common but not obvious reason is that material on the iDVD menu goes outside the TV-Safe area (or just touching it).
So first - turn on TV-Safe area and move any object well inside of this.
Wide screen stretched - usually (as I think) it is due to making a 4x3 movie in a 16x9 wide-screen project OR the other way around. This forces one to on flat-screen TV (or other) set the presenting view right - My has 4x3, wide-screen, zoom and auto-wide-screen and I have to switch this by my remote for some DVD I've made "wrong" way.
Now my long long list on Multiplex Error

as described by Donnyboy69.  Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.
    B.    Location of Chapters
    • Can’t be at start or end of movie (Skip first/start one - iDVD sets this by it self. At the End - no need)

    Multiplex Error
    Chuck, Chicago 2/7/2009.
Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing wide-screen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taiyo Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on gray background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the unedited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

I tried suggestions to remove special characters and no chapter marks at beginning, but nothing worked
Note that I've used iDVD for dozens of projects and this is first time I've run into Multiplex Errors
Anyway, for problem project, I tried an experiment where I removed all chapters in FCE and passed to new iDVD project
    This time multiplex errors gone
So had something to do with chapters
So now I tried numerous experiments to remove individual chapters and try again creating disk image with new iDVD project
After numerous tries, I was able to narrow problem down to 1 "Bad" chapter mark
That is, when I left the "bad" chapter in my FCE project and passed to iDVD, iDVD gave multiplex error
When I removed "bad" chapter mark (and others in), no multiplex error
As a final experiment, I moved "bad" chapter mark about 5-10 sec's beyond original point and passed to iDVD, the multiplex errors now magically went away and I was able to finally create my disk image.
I have no idea why this worked, but thought I'd mention here in case someone else runs into similar problem.

In addition to Bengt's fine advice, burning errors can occur if you have located any of your menu buttons wholly or partly outside of the safe TV viewing area. Go to your main project menu, then click on View/Show TV Safe Area, to check. Drag into the safe viewing area any buttons that are outside the safe viewing area.
    Russ One - suggest this
Multiplex Error-There was an error during muxing preparation
One thing that worked for me was to export the video w/o chapter markers as a self contained movie (thereby not loosing the edits & etc). Then make a new FCE project and import that movie into a new sequence and add the chapter markers. I've used "-", "&" and "," with no problem in the chapter names. Removing the markers or exporting without them did solve the problem but renaming them with just numbers 1,2,3....5, did not solve the problem and since this problem seems to happen with with iMovie as well, it would suggest the problem is in the video or audio and in combination with the chapter markers iDVD just can't handle it. The only other possibility is that both iMovie and FCE share the same or similar chapter marker code that some how is corrupting the markers.
    Summary - What to try
    1. Chapters
    • Only A to Z and 0 to 9 in chapter title
    • No Chapter mark at very beginning of movie
    • No Chapter mark in or within 2 seconds from any transition in movie
    2. TV-safe area for buttons (no one outside this)
    3. Safe re-boot
    4. No other external devices connected - that are not needed
    SDMacuser adds to this
    • On #4 ... No ext. devices. Some think this applies mainly to ext. FW. Not the case. Also applies to ext. USB2 as well (not to mention flash drives too).
Do not leave 3rd party devices / camera / camcorder plugged in unless it is being used with iDvd's One Step process. Certain web cams can trigger this also (especially ones with added features like LED light/s that draw additional power from the FW or USB bus).
    5. Minimum of 25Gb free space on Start-up hard disk
    6. Make a DiskImage first - reduces where problem originates
    7. Trash iDVD pref. file
    8. Make a new iDVD project
    9. Movies in project with same aspect ratio e.g. 4x3 or 16x9
    10. No other programs/applications running during iDVD process. e.g. Internet, screen & energy savers

I create a project w/iMovie and I have two problems:  When I try to finalize the project iMovie crashes; when I share to DVD sometimes it crashes also; if I can successfully send it to DVD and then burn a DVD there are wavy lines on the screen.  I'm uising photos in my project, not video.  Help!

You can split a project in two by doing this.
    1) Go to the Project Library View.
    2) Select your project, and click FILE/DUPLICATE PROJECT. Give it a name like "your project name - part 1".
    3) Do this again. This time name it "your project name - part 2"
    4) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the second half.
    5) Open Part 1 for editing. Delete everything in the first half of the project.
At the end you should have your original project, plus the same project in two parts.

  • Trying to burn my video to a dvd and I get media not present ?

I am trying to burn my video to a DVD and I get media not present ??

    mcavalla
    Just going to add on
    a. Is this a :"it worked before but not now" issue or "it never worked before" issue?
    b. If you did a burn to folder (4.7 GB) for your DVD-VIDEO, does that go to a successful completion?
Looking forward to your follow up.
    Thanks.

  • Been trying to burn a movie onto DVD and get this "The disc can't be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" Anybody know what it means and what to do? Help! Thanks

Been trying to burn a movie onto DVD and get this "The disc can’t be burned, because the device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" Anybody know what it means and what to do? Help! Thanks

It generally means that the media is faulty or of poor quality. Most of us here use Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden media.
    OR
Your Superdrive may need a clean.
If you have further questions please state what Mac, with what versions of OS X, iMovie and iDVD you are using.

  • Problems mastering to dvd and missing codecs

I am having problems mastering to dvd with the mpeg 2 dvd option and also missing codecs, anyone can help me? new to cs5 so probably something I am doing wrong when going to export then selecting option mpeg2 dvd and select drive for output,it burns and then wont play back even though its burned okay...using tons dvds and wasting them, and getting rather frustrated...no idea how to use encore yet as in menus and stuff as used the old version of elements and 1.5 before upgrading ...so help me please

Assuming that you have the full-paid version, and not the trial, look to see if Transfer Activation is grayed out?
Try Importing a simple MP3 Audio file.
It sounds like you have experienced the "revert to trial" of the full-paid version, so that you now have zero MPEG-2 support.
The steps to correct this are:
    1.) Deactivate (probably grayed out)
    2.) Uninstall
3.) Run Adobe Clean Script CS5 several times, rebooting between each run.
    4.) Install CS5
    5.) Instantly update, before launching
    6.) Activate
    7.) Launch and test.
    Good luck,
