DVD.app no Dolby 5.1 thru optical cable on Cinema Amplifier

Hallo,
last night I tried the first time watching a DVD with Dolby 5.1 on my IMAC 2008 Unit. Using the DVD.app which comes with Leopard, was not giving me Dolby 5.1. After checking all possibilities of settings still only PCM Stereo. I also checked some Forum's on the Internet but not got the right answer. Same result useing VLC.app. After installing Perian.app I got Dolby 5.1 with VLC.app.
Still I would prefer useing the DVD.app.
Is there maybe something missing, or does the DVD.app not support Dolby. Some on other Forum say it does and some say it does not support dolby.
Operation system is Leopard 10.5.7 with all updates on my IMAC.
I am thankfull for info.

Problem solved.
On my AV Receiver RX-V2700 I selected Input as auto. With this seting the Mac does not recognized the AV receiver as DD 5.1 unit. The VLC player played 5.1 because I set the option "force dolby digital" or similar on VLC options. The Apple DVD Player don't has this option to set. As soon I seted the Av receiver input permenent from auto to optical input dolby worked.

  • How do I get good audio feed from DVD player to my MBP using an optic cable

I have successfully recorded audio off of concert DVD's using Sound Studio 3 by connecting my DVD player to my MBP using left/right outputs to a 35mm input. I purchased an optical cable, connected it to my DVD player and used a 35mm adapter to connnect it to my MBP input. All I get is a weird popping interferance type sound instead of clear audio. Any tips on what is going on? I have correct settings in system preferences (recognizes an optical connection) but all I hear is noise?
    Thanks for any help!

I just use mac the ripper with the following instructions
    http://www.ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=1249&sid=de5cc9506c05b6ba98d6 530884489333
It gives you a few options for audio, I generally save as AAC though you can rip as AIFF and then encode into just about anything with quicktime.

  • No music via optic cable if tv if off

I have the AppleTV2 linked with HDMI to the TV and optic cable to the amplifier.
I must swich the TV on for the sound to go through to the amplifier. Then, I can switch the TV (all I want is music).
This is stupid, because gaving an iDevice with an AppleTV2 should be enough to control music to the amplifier without switchig the TV on.
    Please help

    Have you tried this?
    1. Unplug your Apple TV, Optical Cable and HDMI Cable
    2. Plug in your Optical Cable
    3. Plug in your Apple TV
    4. Let the Apple TV initialize
    5. Plug in your HDMI

  • Problem with multichannel output, DTS and DD thru optical

I am using my iMac as a media center in my living room, but I am having trouble playing files encoded with DTS and Dolby Digital audio -- they will only output a stereo signal.
    My equipment:
    - iMac G5 w/ Leopard
    - Pioneer VSX-D509S receiver
    - Toslink optical cable
I have changed my mac's midi settings to output "encoded digital audio," and have tried to play DTS encoded files in Quicktime (I have perian installed), VLC Player, and also Plex. I can only seem to get a stereo signal coming out of my receiver. I have also tried to play DD and DTS encoded DVDs on my mac's DVD Player application, which also only outputs a stereo signal.
When I open the midi audio settings on my mac, and I go into the Configure Speakers section, only Stereo is active, and all other multichannel options (5.1, etc) are grayed out. My receiver, however, seems to recognize the digital signal because it will display DTS or DD on the front screen.
Am I missing something simple here? Or could this be a more complicated issue?

Are you able to change your audio output in the audio/midi setup app from 2-ch to "Encoded Digital Audio"? I saw this step here: http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=26759

  • DVD optical cable to iPod HiFi sputtering

I recently bought a new DVD player with optical output. I bought an optical cable to connect it to my iPod HiFi. However the only audio that emerges is this bizzare sputtering, like a tiny engine or something - "pff pff pff pff pff pff pff", etc. I'm new to the world of optical connections. Any guidance as to what this problem could be?
Standard RCA to miniplug works fine, but I really wanted to try this optical hookup thing.

The thing is that, even though iPod HiFi does have optical input, it does not have integrated digital decoder for multi-channel signal decoding. To put it in a few words, DVD audio is usually Dolby Digital 5.1 or DTS 5.1/6.1/7.1. This is not possible to listen on iPod HiFi because it does not understand that complex signal and cannot translate it to analog audio output it supports, hence the digital buzzing sound you hear when you connect a digital optical source. Try playing a DVD with your Mac’s DVD Player app and change the sound output format from analog to digital when connected to iPod HiFi by optical cable and you will hear what I am trying to explain.

  • DVD.app and Sonica Theater no sound

    Hello,
I have a problem with the DVD.app and Sonica Theater USB 7.1 sound card.
I get sound through the USB sound card with every application, Quicktime, VLC (while playing DVDs also), iTunes...but I cannot get sound through the USB card when using the OS X DVD.app. I've checked the preferences out and I find nothing, only a check-box enabling/disabling Dolby Dynamics...I've checked/unchecked this with no changes.
Also, the DVD.app takes 3 launches for it to stay launched (I know this is a little off topic). This happens on my G4 as well as my G5 in 10.4.2, but it was happening in 10.4 as well.
The Sonica Theater is on a G5 running 10.4.2.
    G5 Dual 2, G4 Dual 1.4 GHZ, iBook Graphite SE   Mac OS X (10.4)

Resolved the issue...it was an Unsanity pane (Windowshade X) that was causing a conflict. I looked in the crash report log and saw a bunch of Unsanity things, and temporarily disabled them...through process of elimination I narrowed it down to Windowshade.
Thanks for all the replies...Oh yea, there were none.

  • X-Fi Fatal1ty Pro cannot see 5.1 Dolby Digital input via Optical link (mods, please he

X-Fi Fatalty Pro cannot see 5. Dolby Digital input via Optical link. I am pumping my Xbox360 through the Digital I/O dongle and every thing works OK using Dolby Stereo, outputing to my 5. analog speakers. However, it does NOT work when choosing Dolby Digital 5.. My SPDIF tab just says unknown input.
Please help, this is very frustrating...

Ok, for those who also wanted to know the outcome, I though I'd post.
I was told that the dongle cannot decode 5. to analog, but the Dri've Upgrade and the Console Upgrade could (at $80/$80 vs. $5).
    Great.
So what I want to know is this:? what chipset or connection is Creative putting in the Dri've Upgrade and Console Upgrade? It seems to me that the card should be doing the decoding, not the type of optical port. If it's getting the signal, then what is the problem? Is is that the flexijack cannot output/input 5. at all, only stereo?
Anyway, the Digital I/O dongle is going back, the thing is useless for my purposes. While I can hear 360 games fine, DVD's on it default to 5. if they have that type of audio, and there is no way to switch it to stereo; it gives me only silence then.
And mods, nothing in my frustration is with you; you seem to be very helpful and responsi've. I just wish the rest of the company would get on the ball.

  • XBOX Dolby Digital 5.1 (optical) -- SB Live 5.1 Platinum -- Logitech Z5300 - IS IT POSSIBL

When the XBOX is set on Stereo or Dolby Surround (both with Dolby Digital set to off), I get sound out of four speakers and sub, but no center channel. This is in games, movies, and menus/music.
When the Dolby Digital is enabled, there is light pop/static sound followed by NO AUDIO. This occurs when I put a game or movie into the XBOX.
Menu sounds and XBOX music files come through in 4. no matter what the XBOX settings.
When I play DVDS and games on the computer, the Dolby Digital works great.
Is the setup I desire possible? Can the Li've Dri've's optical in accept Dolby Digital? If not, WHY NOT?
The speakers are analog. CMSS is off. I've swapped XBOXs, AV packs, and optical cables.
    ApexAnalog

you will have to use movie mode in presets , which is cmss to get sound from sb5. and optical out on the xbox and optical in on li've dri've.
And have the advanced av pack and goto xbox audio settings and choose dolby digital enabled, as you have done.
But the card is not doing dolby digital, its uplaoding to the speakers in a simulated dolby digital mode, much as in the same way if you just connect the left/right audio pins, to the AUX 2 in at front of li've dri've.
Well thats how my 4 sb5. and li've dri'ves do it, so they all can,t be broken, or every single xbox i have plugged in, in much the same ways as external dvd players and the li've dri've optical in on sb5, handle it.
So unless someone at creative can tell us how to get dd5. with this setup. Thats what im saying, try it for yourself, then get a dd5. decoder and see the difference.

  • Connecting the Ibook to a receiver thru Optical ?

    Is that possible ?
I want to listen to pandora or whatever using my receiver/stereo system and was wondering if there is a way to connect to it thru optical or a high quality audio cable type connection instead of the cheap ones...
    Thanks!

Yikes. There used to be several USB to digital optical audio adapters available, but they seem to have all disappeared. I would guess that may be because Apple has started to include digital optical audio built-in to the current Macs. It appears that M-Audio has discontinued their USB Transit adapter, but it can still be found from other vendors. M-Audio's software to drive that device should continue to work with Mac OS X 10.4, but since it's been discontinued, they may not update their software to work with the upcoming Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard).
It would be much easier, and cheaper, to get an audio "Y" adapter cable to plug your headphone port into the analog RCA ports on your stereo. You might try that first and then decide if you want a different experience.

  • Dvd app not playing

I insert a DVD into the player, DVD is invoked, and all I get is a blank screen--no activity. If I then press "ESC", I get the DVD app status bar at the top and the full-screen DVD controls at the bottom. From there it is as it used to be. This applies to DVD files on hard-drive.
The expected behavior is: insert disk, movie starts (possibly with a "do you want to start at the beginning?" message).
I can use the "ESC" work-around, but don't know what's happened to make this so.

i've been using /dev/sr0 for everything recently.  my gui apps picked up the change w/o me noticing and my CLI apps work fine with /dev/sr0 as before.  not sure when it happened or why.  your mplayer choppiness may be unrelated b/c i think /dev/sr0 is standard now and should always work.

  • Dolby Digtal via optical cable not work

Have an Audigy 4, recently bought a Digital I/O module as some searching lead me to believe that the Audigy 4 can do dolby decoding... (thinking about getting a PS3 and hooking it up to my monitor) Well, i've been testing with my PS2 and a DVD. With dolby off in the options menu I get stereo sound just fine, the moment I turn Dolby Digital on I get no sound whatsoever. The DVD i'm using to test got both Dolby Digital and DTS audio tracks and I made sure to select the dolby one.
anyone have a clue what's going on?

So creative lied then... Just lovely. the audigy 4 is supposed to have HARDWARE Dolby Digital...

  • Optical cable does not work in Apple TV Software v4.2

    Hi,
Before I upgraded 4.2, I could hear audio from optical cable and could see video from HDMI.
In my case, my display can play audio with HDMI, but I prefer to using optical cable for home theater system. Therefore I usually set the volume 0 on the display.
However, after the upgrade, the audio did not come from optical cable but only from HDMI as ususal.
I tried the following things but I could not get it better.
    - Reboot AppleTV
    - Reset AppleTV
    - Restore AppleTV
    - Reconnect optical cable and HDMI cable
    - Restart my audio system.
    - Restart my display
Does anyone have similar situation after upgrading 4.2?

I KNOW! haha, I hate how simplified the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi service is.. I hope that Cisco would enable advanced settings in their next firmware upgrade for advanced users..
You are pretty lucky to have the EA2700 model. Cisco provides official support for people who do not like the Smart Wi-Fi service to revert back to the classic Web based setup but ends classic web for EA6500. If you feel like trying it out then give it a go! You can make a back up of all your router settings to your computer so if the classic web setup doesn't work for you then you can always upgrade back to the current "Smart" version and restore all your settings.
Here are the links to that:
This one talks about the benefits of having "Smart" Wi-Fi and tells you that you can downgrade if you don't like it:
    http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&app=vw&vw=1&login=1&json=1&docid=0 75691a356fa4dda9d40baed9a266813_Why_was_I_updated_to_Cisco_Connect_Cloud_.xml
This link pretty much tells you how to do it:
    http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?pid=80&vw=1&articleid=25856
UPDATE: I forgot to mention, to back up your current configuration; When you log in to Smart Wi-Fi just click "Troubleshooting", and click the "Diagnostics" Tab and you should see your Backup and Restore settings.

  • Is an optical cable sufficient to get 5.1 sound?

Just hooked up Apple TV for the first time, ran the software update and am playing with it. This is very cool. Was a bit concerned when playing HD trailers they didn’t play in 5.1, but then searched through these forums and found they are not in that format. Haven’t rented a movie yet.
My question is, I'm connecting my ATV to my receiver with an optical digital cable. That’s it re audio. So if the movie supports 5.1, should that be sufficient to generate it?
I’m out of my element here, I kinda do what I'm told when setting this stuff up. On my DVD player, I have both an optical digital cable and a bunch of regular cables for audio front left/front right/center/back left/back right. Not sure why I have all those cables when I have the optical digital one, maybe they’re unnecessary. Just got concerned when I didn’t see analogous inputs on the ATV unit.
Just trying to make sure I've got this correctly setup. FYI, TV is 4 years old, doesn’t’ have HDMI.

Yes, the optical cable will pass 5.1, and that's the better choice than the analog RCA connectors. The HDMI probably does as well, but isn't relevant for you.

  • No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?

I have just connected my AppleTV 2 with my Pioneer ELITE 910 HD Plasma TV system.  I have a hard wire ether net connected.  I have a great picture coming out of the HDMI connection from AppleTV plugged into my ELITE 910 HDMI Media Receiver.  But I am not hearing audio.  I have gone through the 'settings' menu on the AppleTV screen and have every setting correct (I believe)   It might appear that I may have to purchase an Optical Digital Audio Cable that would input into my Pioneer ELITE VSX-54TX receiver (that does have an Optical Digital Input that has not been used.)
Am I on the right track?  I was hoping the video AND audio would travel through the HDMI connection.   I don't want to spend money on the cable if I don't need it.

Re: No audio with HDMI cable connect - need optical cable?
Yes, audio and video should go via HDMI.
Do other peripherals work ok with the pioneer over HDMI.
My LG BlueRay player works fine.  My TIVO works fine -- good audio and video
AppleTV is a bit odd with audio at times.
Does the pioneer media box handle doilby digital and linear PCM?
I don't know what "linear PCM" is.  All the specs on this 2004 system are here:
    http://plasmatvbuyingguide.com/plasmatv/pioneer-pro910hd.html
If you have Dolby Digital set to Auto I'd expect you to get some audio - if set to On and media box can't decode DD then you may get no sound.
Try cycling those settings as well as the one for audoo bit depth.
Have done all this.  Still no audio
