DVD archival storage

Is there a best brand/type of DVD for archival storage of digital video? Secondly, I'm using a Sony DVD recorder to transfer old Hi8 analog tapes to DVD (since it cannot be done with iMovie). What DVD format should I use to then play and edit on my iMac20?

DVD's and archival storage is really much like an oxymoron. They are not reliable for this purpose. Tape is the very best archival medium, but since you don't have that option, I would suggest you look for Taiyo Yuden DVD-R media.
The common DVD format is MPEG2, for which you will need MPEGStreamclip (freeware) and Apple's QuickTime MPEG2 plug-in ($20.00) to work it in iMovie.
You could make all your requirements (archive, play and edit) much simpler if you bought yourself a miniDV cam and shelve the DVD cam.

  • Can't retrieve iMovie project saved to DVD for storage and editing.

When I save my iMovie project to DVD for storage and possible future editing, I cannot retrieve it from the DVD. I get the message, "The project could not be opened, bacuase the disk is full, the folder is locked, or the folder permissions are incorrect..." How do I remedy that?

    the folder is locked
iMovie projects won't work with locked volumes (such as a DVD!). So you must first copy the project to the HD.

  • By using "Disk Utility", will I burn a DVD to watch on TV or burn a DVD for storage?

Old Toad tells me to burn a DVD from"Disk Utility", but will that burn my DVD so I can watch it on TV, or will it store those files on a DVD?
If best, I would like to actually watch the DVD...

Disk Utility will create a data DVD for storage.
Ony iDVD will burn a video for playback with a DVD player or your Mac.
The current Apple thinking is that the entire world has access to fast broadband and wants to distribute home movies to friends and relatives via download (iCloud) rather than mailing them a DVD. The fact that in reality not all users do, has so far had no effect on this policy. If you scream and shout loudly enough down the phone Apple may send you a free copy of iDVD. That worked for some, but is now said to have been withdrawn by Apple. Also, you can complain bitterly here, perhaps suggesting that Apple could have provided a choice between using iCloud and burning DVDs:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Whilst Macs with a Superdrive continue to be able to burn video DVDs, the software for so doing, iDVD, is no longer included in the iLife bundle that comes with OS 10.7 Lion (which also omitted iWeb) or will come with OS 10.8 Mountain Lion. And it is no longer included in the iLife 11 from the online Apple Store: http://www.apple.com/ilife/. Your only solution is to look on Amazon or eBay and try to get an older version that includes iDVD.
However, the vastly more expensive FCPX can burn a DVD without iDVD or DVD Studio Pro involvement, but lack the themes etc of iDVD. Also, of course, there is Roxio Toast.

  • Can a time machine backup also be used for archive storage?

Can the same time machine backup drive also be used for archive storage from another Macbook?

The way TimeMachine works you can guarantee that anything on your computer now will be backed up and archival copies kept. But there are two caveats. First, TimeMachine trims backups. For 24 hours they are hourly (approximately). Then the most current will be trimmed and a week worth of daily backups will be kept. Then the week will be trimmed to the most current version and the weekly backups will be kept until the drive is too full. At that point the oldest weekly update(s) will be erased to make room for the next hourly backup. When trimming occurs, files that were backed up but are no longer on your computer will be trimmed. This is the second caveat.
Since this trimming is automatic rather than under your control TimeMachine isn't a good archival backup system. Two programs that I can recommend that do have true archival ability are CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync. Both allow you to decide what gets archived and how many archival periods to allow.

  • DVD-RW Storage Media

My cdrom manugacturer recommended JVC DVD-RW 4X for re-writable media. I've tried several on line stores, and they say the product is no longer available, and point me to Taiyo Yuden, which I have never heard of. One dealer remarked that JVC was no longer manufacturing re-writable media.
Having lost valuable files to "unpronounceable" media in the past, I am curious to know if someone can shed some light on this development. Like you, my work demands reliable storage.

If you're really into backing up your photos on a lasting medium, it's best to use gold CDs, which are not rewriteable. Because such a disk's surface is coated with a thin layer of gold, instead of aluminum, and because gold is virtually immune to anything in breathable air that could corrode it, real backup freaks use gold CDs. The downside, of course, is that CDs don't hold nearly as much information as DVDs, so you wind up having to store rooms full of CDs somewhere in a relatively safe locale. And, at about 4 bucks a pop, they ain't all that cheap. Unfortunately, for a technical reason that's virtually impossible for idiots like me to understand, manufacturers can't make gold coated DVDs; so, we're stuck with CDs.
As for brands of DVDs, in my experience, any of the name brands, such as TDK, Memorex, etc. work fine. I've been backing up my photos since 2002 on normal non-rewriteable DVDs and CDs and, so far (knock on wood), I can still access the photos on them. However, I also back up my shots on a 1 TB external hard drive, which, so far (knock on wood) has not exhibited any problems. Hard drives do crash, so it pays to have an alternate backup.
Interesting note: the Library of Congress in its never ending quest to archive everything it collects as permanently as possible, uses lacquer disks and needles to record and preserve all its audio works. They don't trust CDs, DVDs, or, god forbid, magnetic tape.

  • How to install foundation as the same DVD holds storage and foundation?

    Hi,
I've downloaded the WS 2012 Storage & Foundation DVD image from the MSDN web site. I need to install the foundation flavour. But when I run the ISO from VirtualBox, this is the WS Storage flavour setup which is started. How can I start the foundation
    version?
    Thanks,
    romu

Foundation is OEM only and has to be on physical servers.  It's not able (at least eula wise) to be installed virtually.
Unfortunately TechNet isn't coming back, sorry folks :-(

  • Archiving & Storage

    Hi,
I've been asked to provide a simple archiving solution by one of our functional guys, which involves storing the archive file and storage file on the same physical server where the sap instance lives.
I have managed to setup quite easily the archiving directory ARCHIVE_GLOBAL_PATH "
<MYIPADDRESS>\archive\<MYSID>\<FILENAME>" under basic customizing through transaction SARA.  My functional colleague has successfully saved archived files to this folder, however he now needs to store these into a storage area.
I have setup a content repository (transaction OAC0) called Z1 and on the object to be archived FI_ACCPAYB (Vendor master data) set Z1 under "File storage to storage system".  This is where I believe I have the issue!!!
    Z1 is setup as follows:
    Storage Type : RFC Archive
    Version : 0031
    RFC Destination : <MYSID>
    Transfer Directory :
    <MYIPADDRESS>\archive\<MYSID>\storage\
What this is actually doing is using an RFC back to itself, rather than to an external SAP system.  When I goto store this file through SARA management and the background job runs, it cancels with the following error:
The archive file 000033-001FI_ACCPAYB is being processed
    Error opening file 000033-001FI_ACCPAYB
Error occured when checking the stored archive file 000033-001FI_ACCPAYB
When I check the folder above (
<MYIPADDRESS>\archive\<MYSID>\storage\) the archived file has been copied to this directory, however the red light inside SARA management still shows red (not stored).
Is there another alternative than RFC Archive?  Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi James,
    Lets talk from the basics...
Archiving is done in 2 steps (or 3 steps, depending on whether storage is used):
    1. Archive - reads the data from DB and saves into filesystem in the form of archive files.
    2. Delete - deletes the data from DB, which is already archived
    (3. Store - moves the archive file into a storage system)
Data archiving is based on ADK - Archive Development Kit. So the steps 1 and 2 are based on ADK. But when step 3 comes into picture, something else also is involved; its called Archivelink!
Now, Archivelink comes in 2 flavors, one is RFC based (for which you created a content repository) and second is the HTTP Content server.
To use these, you need to have a storage system (either an external storage system or SAP Content server) which can 'understand' and 'talk' Archivelink.
As I understand from your query, you are trying to store your archive files again in filesystem, which would not be possible directly and you need to use a storage system.
So now you have 3 options:
    1. Leave the archive files in the file system. If so, leave the content repository id blank in the object specific customizing in SARA.
    2. Use external storage system - Various vendors are available in Market
    3. Use SAP Content Server - see following links for more details:

  • Moved songs to DVD for storage, want to move them back, will I lose them?

    Hi everyone,
Some months ago, during a computer reformat, I deleted iTunes and moved my songs and files onto DVDs for external storage. Well I would like to move them back to my computer's harddrive, but I'm wondering since they're in Apple's protected format, will I lose these songs/files when I sync the files in iTunes? This is a primary concern. What do I do? Will it recognize these songs as songs I bought and paid for?
Also, I'm sure that iTunes has a new edition since I did this. Could/would this have an effect. Worries about losing my files in an iPod sync are what keeps me buying archaic CDs for now, lol.
    Thanks in advance,
    Larry

No. Choose Authorize Computer from the Store menu in iTunes before you sync the iPod.

    Yes.

  • DVD Archive = COMPRESSED FILES

To be certain, I follwed the explicit iTunes 6, multi-page procedure to find that I CANNOT archive the material I purchased from Itunes "Music Store" on a DVD.
What one gets is a compressed m4p file and NOT an AIFF file, thus the archive isn't a valid, full file of the purchased material. It is a compressed facimile.
This is the result of three DAYS of effort, first using logic, then the menu instructions and gfinally a search that led here.
ITunes was supposred to be fun. It is anything but that.
A CD can be obtained in AIFF format for auto playing but not a DVD.

G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   MCE DVD firewire external

You do realise iTunes Music Store only sells compressed music, right? It was only an M4P file that you bought in the first place.
    Cap.

  • Very Angry DVD Archiver!!

    Hi!
I'm sure I wrote something about this before.
I archive quite abit of stuff onto DVD.
After I do this I then list the archive with DiskTracker. (I mention this to prove the point that the DVD actually mounted sometime in it's life).
Now I find that the DVD when inserted into either my G5 or G4 doesn't get recognised.
I know that there is a great deal of issues with specific brands, but I have 10 archives all not mounting. Even if a DVD was faulty, to expect 10 of the same brand not to mount is absurd.
Can anyone suggest a way to force the computer to open these volumes? I will try them on a PC to see if that will work, but I have had a progressive number of problems like this with the Apple DVD drive. Is there no firmware or something that can resolve the silly issue. As I said previously they once mounted, and I need if I have to to get the information off so that I can put them on another DVD. This is rediculous!!
    Help please?
    Thanks in advance

Note, there are a variety of DVD formats which may or may not be readable by your specific DVD drive. In Mac OS X, you can tell which is readable by viewing the info on the drive in the System Profiler. Apple menu -> About This Mac -> More Info brings that up.
To avoid problems with reading DVDs:
    1. Do not label the disks themselves.
    2. Purchase DVDs prepackaged in jewelcases.
    3. Use only 4.7 GB DVD-R media unless you know your drives support other DVD formats such as DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW, and DL formats.
    4. Burn at next maximum speed, and not maximum speed.
    5. Some DVD drives do have firmware updates as you surmise, but they are model specific and don't apply to all DVD drives. Search DVD Firmware Update on http://www.apple.com/support/
Most of these will help support 4X DVDs where they might not be otherwise supported.

  • DVD-RW storage

I am having trouble re-writing to a DVD-RW disc. After I store data and burn disc, I can retreive it OK but it wont let me restore back to my DVD. Any help would be appreciated.
    MacMini   Mac OS X (10.4)

Re-Writable discs are not like floppy disks or USB keys. In order to reuse them, you have to erase them first. This can be done using Disk Utility. After launching it, select your optical drive, click on the "Erase" tab, and then choose Erase and go. A "Quick Erase" will be much faster than a full erase, and should work just as well.

  • Not reading older DVD archive

I use DVD backup, after upgrading to maverick my DVDs started having .fpbf extension on them. Now many of my backed up DVDs show up as empty, untitled DVDs - What's up.   The DVDs show up on my desktop as  untitled.fpbf

I've already erased the upper/lower thing, still doesn't work
I don't count with an externeal TOSHIBA dvd drive, is any brand useful?
I'm in Argentina and official technical service is very expensive, can I configurate my external hard disk (made out of an internal disk and a case with usb connection) to replace the internal hidden volume or the dvd recover disk? in the system configuration, it appears as a "description: local fixed disk"
    thanks everyone!

  • Need to buy DVD drive / Storage for my iMac Mid2011 but don't know where to start

I have an iMac mid2011, and would like to fit it with an additional dvd drive so that I don't have to mess around changing region codes from 1 to 2 and back.
Can somebody please recommend a dvd drive (better if blu-ray) compatible with iMac Mid2011?  I am thinking of buying online, but I am afraid of getting the wrong thing.
I am also expanding my video library, and have considered buying a 2TB external HD, but a friend told me to better buy a NAS.  So same question goes, should I stay traditional and just buy the hard drive?  Which brands are most compatible with my mac?  and If you'd rather buy a NAS, why should I go for it, and which brand?
    Thanks so much Apple experts.
    AJD

So far I've not found a single USB DVD player that didn't work with the Mac. BluRay is a bit trickier since you'll also need 3rd party software to play commercial BluRay movies because the  Mac OS doesn't support BluRay.
A NAS is useful under three circumstances: 1) you want to access data from the drive when you aren't at home. 2) you have more than one computer in the household and want to share that drive with them and/or 3) you want to take advantage of RAID technology. And even here a NAS isn't the only way to accomplish this.
If none of these hold true for you then save your money and get a high quality external drive - I recommend OWC to one and all. (I have no affiliation, I'm a very satisfied customer.) You might even want to consider OWC's miniStack Max which contains both a hard drive and optical drive.

  • Video Chat Archive/Storage

    Hello Friends,
I have developed a audio/video/text chat application with multiple users. I would like to store/save live session in to a single video so that we can manage archived live sessions, and make these sessions available for other users just like a normal video/FLV.
I know we can store single live streaming with DVR but I need to store all the live cams into single video.
Note: I'm using FMIS for above application (with rtmp).
Any help will be very much appreciated.
    regards/Amitpal

This is not possible with FMS. You would need to use other software to post process the videos into a single file (I'm not aware of such software... if you find something suitable, please share your findings).
What you can do with FMS is develop a method of timecode, and use that timecode to play the streams back in a synchronized manner. This would go against your plan of a single downloadable file, and would require a specific playback application designed to support your timecode system.
