DVD: black screen, some sound..

I bought my Mac in august 2010. Yesterday i was watching a dvd, everything was ok, but after 40min the dvd just stopped. Nothing i did helped, so I tried to restart. Since then, when I put in a dvd, there are a lot of starting sounds, I hear some music from the dvd, then the screen goes totally black. After that; nothing. Is there anything I can do or is it broken?

I've got a similar problem: I had it working, but had terrible sound problems with various components (DVD etc). I updated my HK firmware and that seems to have fixed all the problems with the other components but create new ones with ATV2. I'm running HDMI 1.4 from the ATV2 to the HK 255 amp, and no matter what I try and do, I can't seem to get any picture OR sound...
Does anyone know of a solution?
thanks

  • Black screen then sound loops on cq5320y

    System specs.
    Athlon 2 x4 640
    4 gig memory
    HP motherboard cq5320y
    Corsair 500 w power supply
    500 gig HD
    HD 6670 video card
The issue I am having is upon playing world of tanks anywhere from 5 minutes to 2 hours I will get a black screen and the sound will loop. The monitor will says it is going to sleep. The only fix is a power off/on. This sometimes gets courpt files then have to run chdsk. So it does have most recent drivers and I have tried so old ones with the same effect. Today daughter was playing an online(facebook) game and same thing happen. So I put back in my first video card hd 4550 that used to not have this issue. Then started playing WOT and again got black screen and sound loop. So I am not thinking it is an video card issue since it happens with both video cards. Power supply voltage checked out okay by meter. So not sure where to go with this issue.
Only thing I am think is the ps is over power the video card through the old motherboard????
    Any other ideas

That is not very likely. The power to the video card is regulated by power circuits on the motherboard.

Which OS is installed and which type is it?
When was the last time you went to the command line and used the system file checker? sfc /scannow
Have you refreshed the swap file recently?
    How about your temp\tmp folder?
What are you using for an active antivirus\malware solution?
Which JRE are you using? Are you sure it is the most stable version?
Are you certain this is not a temperature related issue?
    Best regards,

    _*My Problem:*_
I take out the battery, plug it in the power. Charging light turns on.
I press the power button, power led turns on. Followed by the hdd led turn on, which blinks real quick, stays on for 1 second, then turns of. The power led stays on during all the time.
2 seconds after the power button, a fan starts blowing, while the above mention hdd led blinks for 1 second, 2 seconds after the fan starting to blow, it turns off.
We are now 4 seconds farther, pretty much, everything stopts, except a very tiny minor humming sound. (I just left it on for a couple minutes, sound remains, nothing happens.) (While writing this all I left it on for 10 minutes, the laptop heats op a bit, the adapter gets hotter, but still only the very tiny minor humming sound.)
+So my laptop works for 4 seconds, wont give any screen (black screen) wont load even BIOS. What could be wrong ?+
    _*Fixing?:*_
Ok so I left the laptop after a couple of months, being told it was dead, just getting it dusty. (Read history to get this)
But since last week, I figured its getting dusty, I never opened a laptop before, why wont I try doing that.
_+*I replaced the Memory modules, Slot A and B , both memories , same time, one at a time, all possible ways.*+_
_+*Since I have only 1 HDD, I used it in both slots. Looks to no difference. Using NO HDD, I do NOT have the very tiny minor humming sound!!!*+_
I followed a guide [http://www.irisvista.com/tech/] to open my laptop, to see what is inside.
Finding no lose plugs, but did find a certein oil, and some white paste.
Closing the laptop, to try it out, I accidently screwed a couple wrong screws in the laptop, piercing the top cover of my laptop, but no chips were hit during this :P (Yeah, Im a bit to strong, I should have figured using force for a couple of the screws wasnt the best thing I could do, but now i know :p)
*SOOO* My question, while I wait for the extra old HDD (getting it in 2 days). (Probably making no difference)
What could be wrong, more precisly. Should I like try taking out the video card or something ?
Is there something I should do with some soldering?
Any tips/tricks that could work, wether to fix the laptop, or to narrow down the problem , to a small part which i could replace ?

    _*History:*_
Not sure if this is any important, but just to let you know, if intrested what happend all to the laptop ;)
I bought the laptop at Shape Computers (in the netherlands) Asking this laptop mentioned above, with 2 things changed. I wanted more Memory, and I wanted windows XP. The shop told me this was possible. They bought me the laptop in, they replaced the Memory with the kingston memories. They installed windows XP instead of the Vista. They laptop did work at this very moment. So I bought the working laptop, with 1 year warranty.
With the folders extra given with the laptop, I was able to increase my warranty from 1 to 2 years for free, so I did.
After probably a couple of weeks I noticed that the laptop was getting real hot, after longer usage. But according to the manual this was normal.
I did use the laptop for gaming, but also 2 months for a gaming study. So I did take it several times to school in a backpack.
After not using it for school anymore I reinstalled Windows Vista 32 BIT
At a very point not sure when precisly I noticed that it wouldnt turn on (probably same problem as I have now) but I was really relaxed about it, tried it later, and somehow it did work again. This happend perhaps about 5 times in total.
Knowing something was wrong, I took it back to Shape Computers. They checked it. (Not showing me what they did to it) But they told me I had nothing to worry about.
After about 2 years I actually sold this laptop to my mom. She used it a couple times (she is like realy noob, just about computers in generally, not even knowing if she should double click icons or not) She took it with her a couple times on trips, and they after about 2 years and 2 months ... this problem happend.
My mom knows a guy, and a friend of that guy, works alot with broken laptops, which told me that the problem was the _+motherboard+_.
I decided to take it back to the shop. After a long progress being down there (about 6 to 8 weeks)(Me going to the shop like 15 times). The shop managed to tell me it was the motherboard. That the motherboard couldnt be fixed and that a new one would be way to expensive.
+(I Known at this very point, after getting the motherboard back, that this laptop was not screwed open yet. The screws were still brand new.)+
Funny information(not for me), during this period of about 8 weeks, they actually told me lies like ... I left a message at your voicemail, I DONT HAVE A VOICEMAIL ... sorry for the caps but im still xxxxxx about those lies.
So still believing the shop ... my laptop is gone .... dead ... but then since last week, I started looking into the laptop myself ...(Fixing)

Ok, the company did not reply at all ... I ended up sending another email. And they did reply with a automatic message. Now weeks later still nothing more then that auto reply.
While I was waiting I contacted another guy that knows alot from these laptops. Getting a new part would cost me about 300 euros, and thats just the part, not even replace time.
Considering the toshiba help I have gotten ... (pretty much none) in these last years.
I declare my laptop dead. And decide at this very moment, that I (ofcourse) never will buy toshiba hardware again.
I might pay a bit more at my Dell computers, but the support in the last 8 years with 5 different computer systems and 1 laptop. Has been perfect in compare to the toshiba support I have gotten in the last 3 years, which just fails.
Thx tho all you guys for the replys.

    As the subject line says:

  • MacBook Pro Locks up w/ unresponsive Black Screen, Stuttering sound.

    Hello,
Having searched high and low, I can't seem to find a solution to my predicament.
I have a Mid-2010 15" i5 MacBook Pro, and when I run programs that kick my GPU onto the nVidia card, I will randomly get a completely black screen. This is not apparently the more common "black screen of doom" because I cannot do anything at all to the computer - I see no mouse pointer, I can't adjust the screen intensity, and the only resolution is to force shutdown and reboot. My sound also loops the last second or so of audio if anything was playing at that time, and the force shutdown produces a audible 'pop' most times, which sounds like it might be from the HD. When I do so I get a message about Mac OS X unexpectedly crashing, and a check of the Console seems to indicate that it's some sort of kernel panic. I've reset PRAM, SMC, etc and run all the normal disk checks and nothing has come up. It's only been repeatable when I put the computer to sleep, then log back in, and log into a Minecraft server. It has happened on other occasions randomly, such as when Safari had chewed up a great deal of RAM, or during when I was playing Oolite. It would appear, judging by the amount of time each one of these instances takes, that it's something to do with RAM usage possibly, but the kernel log indicates something might be awry on the nVidia card side of things.
Here's the log. I'm really at a loss here, and this is quite annoying to keep losing my work when I happen to absentmindedly open a game up after a long session of writing, etc. I'm afraid that ultimately I'm going to have to take it into the shop, but as a college student with no nearby Apple store, I just can't afford to not have it with me - I'm using it constantly for my work.

    Hi there, GoreLeech,
as per above extract from your error log, you have experienced a kernel panic due to problems with your Nvidea GeForce GT 330 M graphics card that has a 256 MB memory.
This may be due to the card not having enough memory for what you are doing, the only thing, I can suggest here is to call Apple, and get the machine checked out. You can run the Apple hardware test at home but I'd recommend getting it booked in with Apple. What is worse: A computer that randomly malfunctions, or doing without it for up to one week (often they repair it within a day!)?

  • Black Screen with Sound on OpenGL Apps (nVidia GeForce4 MX 440)

After a couple weeks of a non-stop search for a solution that has taken me through countless forums and Google queries, I've come to the realization that I need some help before I drive myself insane. I am running an old emachine T3065 with an AMD Athlon XP 2.167 MHz processor, 1024 MB of RAM, 160 GB HD, and a good old integrated (POS) nVidia NV18 GeForce4 MX 440 displayed on a widescreen Acer X191W LCD panel. I followed the instructions dictated in the nVidia installation wiki to a 'T', and can start GDM and log into Gnome without any conflict. Then when I attempt to launch a 3D OpenGL game or application, I'm stuck with a black screen where I can still hear sound (in fullscreen mode) or, in a few windowed programs such as foobillard and Google Earth, a three-dimensional shape without textures. Here's a couple screenshots:

As you can see, direct rendering is enabled. This left me fairly perplexed.
Issuing glxgears returned a smooth animation without error running at an average of 1750 frames per second. I then began toying with my xorg.conf settings by turning "RenderAccel" on and off, trying the different "NvAGP" ranges, etc. All without revealing a solution. Here is my current xorg.conf:

Perhaps the warnings pertaining to my monitor and ACPI are pertinent?
Is it possible that there is some kind of issue with my configuration and OpenGL textures since I can still see some non-textured 3D objects? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am beyond frustrated with the matter. On a sidenote, in my latest issue of Linux Pro Magazine, I booted up a Sabayon live disc that game with the magazine and I had the same error except that a message blatantly said that I did not have OpenGL support. Anyway, I apologized if I rambled a bit and I hope that we'll be able to find a solution. Cheers!

I guess I forgot to disclose that bit, haha. I'm currently using the 'nvidia-96xx' drivers which I thought were the correct set for the GeForce4 series. I recall reading that in a wiki somewhere, but I could be mistaken. I thought 'nvidia-71xx' was for GeForce2 and earlier.I really hope it is as simple as me installing the wrong driver.

  • Macbook shutdown / freeze black screen and sound loop

    Hello !
For a few months now my macbook pro 2010 shuts down automatically after some times of working (sometime 2 minutes ... sometimes 2 hours !)
    Black screen
If a sound was played, it looped
    Keyboard keep being lightened
My macbook seems to freeze ... the only solution is to shutdown by pressing a loing time the shutdown button.
My battery is brand new and the harddrive is ok (bought less than 1 year ago).
Here is the report I've automatically got when I relaunch.
Can someone explain me what the **** is happening ?
    Thanks a lot !

Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):
             com.apple.GeForce(6.4.0)@0x82ac4000->0x82b7afff

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Video Won't Play in iTunes - Black Screen/No Sound

I have two complete series of tv shows I have purchased from the iTunes store.
iTunes is up to date with the latest release
QuickTime is up to date with the latest release
The computer is registered as an authorized computer
Nothing is showing - all I get is a black screen. The video timer starts (it knows how long the video is suppose to be) but no video / no sound.
The one series will play on my iphone - I haven't tried the other yet (have to clear space first).
These will not even play on VLC
What is going on - how do I get them to play?
    K

    Hello there, BladeSwinga.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great in-depth steps for troubleshooting issues with playback:

  • Satellite L750D - Black screen with sound in media players

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba Satellite L750D and running Windows 7. When I play a video file (any format) windows media player opens and starts to play but I only get sound, no picture its a black screen. I tried 2 other media players (VLC and Power DVD) and the same thing happens.
    Can anyone help?
I've searched online but nothing has helped so far.
    Thanks.

    Thanks PauPau for your reply.
I have seen this fix in another online forum, however when i open Options in WMP, there is no Advanced button on the performance tab. I have been unable to locate any options for the Video Accelaration, and no options for 'overlays'.
This problem is not just with WMP, i've tried other players and get the same problem. When WMP is open on the video file, i can see the thumb nails with a picture of the video, but when i open them the picture is black but sound is ok. This is the same for the other media players as well.
Another suggestion i read was to turn off WMP in windows programs, then reboot and then turn WMP back on. This didn't work either. I have also checked the driver and there is no yellow flag on this to say there is a problem.
My last option at this point is to resotre back to factory settings, but i'll use this as a last resort.
    Your suggestions are appreciated.

  • Qosmio X305-Q701 - Black Screen and sound loop while gaming

    Hi,
My Qosmio X305-Q701 has recently started crashing while playing any games. Never had a problem out of it until the past month. All games now from WoW and F.E.A.R. to solitare. It will just randomly go to a black screen and the last sound byte while loop over and over requiring a hard reboot.
Graphics card is Nvidia geforce 9700m gts series.
All drivers and directx is up to date running windows vista. I am not very tech savy so any help or expierence with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

I have the exacrt same issues, and have had them for some time. I tried all the software solutions, and mechanical solutions that I could perform myself ( cleaning the airflow vents, and cooling fan ) Nothing has worked. Sad thing is, no real solutions are ever given to this, so let me lay it down like this. The video card is a P.O.S. and is at fault. Only way to fix it is to replace it. Preferably with one equivelant, but from a different manufacturer. In all honesty, this is the worst computer I've ever owned. Even sadder is its the most expensive one I've ever bought. I've tried for help through the place I bought it ( Best Buy, which I am having my own difficulties dealing with ) and Toshiba support as well. No one has offered an explanation as to why this model isn't recalled, and or replaced because its a lemon. Good luck in getting it fixed. My own solution is to cut my losses, get a new computer ( which will never be a Toshiba again ) and chalk it up as lesson learned.

  • Imac will not boot. black screen, no sounds.. but has power.

Hi guys, yesterday my mac would not boot. The screen is black, and the power light on the bottom right hand corner is on. My warranty expired 30 days ago (figures). I stupidly put in a CD to see if the player had power and it did (now I can't get it out). I can hear the fan on, and the DVD drive spinning. I have no chimes or sounds. I removed the memory and started the machine... same thing except the power light started flashing. I put the memory back in and powered it up.. same as before solid light, black screen, and no sounds. I unplugged the unit for a day which did not help. ANY help would be appreciated!
    Imac - Intel   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

First, boot and hold down mouse key to get CD out. then,
    Try this.
Turn on Mac and hold down command-S (Apple S), it will boot into single user mode (white on black). Let it finish.
When it is done type the following.
    fsck -fy
then hit return. It will check the disk and make repairs. It can take several minutes. If it finds errors it will fix and say OK. If so, type fsck -fy and run it again. This time if it doesn't find any errors type
    reboot
Hopefully it will boot into OS X.

  • IMac 7,1 takes several attempts to start - black screen - some noise

Hi, I've experienced some issues with my 3 year old iMac.
Some days back it wouldn't completely wake up from sleep, that is the fan was spinning but the screen remained black. A manual restart solved the issue.
Since then it has become more and more difficult to start up the iMac. Usually, I press the button, the fan starts and, I believe, so does the HD, there is that chiming noise and that was it. On the screen nothing happens, it remains as black as it is when it's off. And the Mac definitely does not boot since there is nothing more to hear and after some time the fan stops.
Multiple retries have the same result, but after 6 to 10 attempts the screen would come up and with it the iMac boots up. When it's running there have never been any issues whatsoever.
I've tried booting from CD/DVD with the same result. I've resetted PRAM and cut the iMac from the power source for some time. Apple hardware check tells me everything is ok. I tried different RAM but to no avail. (Usually I have 2x2 GB, I tried 1x2 GB in either of the slots and 2x1 GB which was the original configuration.)
What is strange though is that if I start the Mac and leave it like described (fan spinning, black screen) for a couple of minutes and then switch it off and immediately on again, it boots up nicely. So to me it looks that "it needs to warm up first". But that can't be the solution.
    Any ideas would be welcome.

Hi, check out your StartUp Disk (MACOSX) in System Preferences
Reboot holding down the “D” key (diagnostic) 2 levels, run them both..
Did you have Applecare? if so as you maybe just past the end date but Apple might well help you..L

  • Black screen while sound plays - but works in VLC

I got some .h.264 QuickTime .mov files, they open up and usually show the first frame, then it is black, but the sound continues.
I've tried converting them to mp4 or other files from QuickTime player and that doesn't help.
I'm on QuickTime X, Snow Leopard here.

I got some .h.264 QuickTime .mov files, they open up and usually show the first frame, then it is black, but the sound continues... I've tried converting them to mp4 or other files from QuickTime player and that doesn't help.
Generally speaking, if the QT player cannot play the content, then QT apps or third party apps that rely on the embedded QT structure/components are usually unlikely to be able to convert them properly unless the issue is simply one of trying to play too much data on an old and underpowered system. Since you say they play correctly in VLC, try using VLC to convert or re-pack the data or try HandBrake for the conversion.
As to the original source of the problem, there is insufficient information to make any guesses at this time. For instance, QT applications do not normally like proprietary or "enhanced" versions of MPEG-4/AVC content which hybridize features/capabilities of higher profiles/levels in lower profile/level combinations.
