DVD / BluRay  Authoring

Since this is a discussion I am asking a question.
Why has Adobe abandoned Encore? I know we can still use the CS6 version but the work flow is a pain and the work flow is counter to the way other programs work with each other.
Now if I want to edit a menu in photoshop I must first open an old version of photoshop, CS6, otherwise CC 2014 opens but the menu never opens in it.
This of course is on top of the fact I can no longer link right to Encore from Premiere or AE and that sucks.
Really I am sure that not everyone who is buying into the cloud is only uploading finished product to a web site.
How many wedding videographers out there no longer provide a DVD or Bluray disc? My guess is most all of them still do.
I now produce DCP's for performances but I still have to also create DVD and Bluray discs to be sent to panelists or to our archive or other that ask for them. I now have to take longer to produce them and as we all know time is money.
I feel Adobe should be providing the full box of tools to the content creators that have made it a very rich company.
Your thoughts?

Maybe I did not make my point.
Adobe should have a program like encore that does that job. We should not have to go outside of adobe for a program. We pay for a complete design software environment where we can do everything from within the creative cloud. That has been the hype from adobe all these years and until encore was abandoned and not replaced with something else.
I just saying adobe can build great software and it gets better all the time and I love working with it but I do not love this aspect of what they have done and I think they need to do as the guy on SNL used to say, "Just Fix IT!"
Again, your thoughts.

  • How simple is the Bluray authoring in Final Cut Studio?

    Hello!
I've been reading posts on Bluray authoring with Final Cut Pro. Just got the upgrade to Final Cut Studio and saw some video at the apple site about bluray.
Frankly, I don't want to spend money with a Windows authoring software for Bluray.
So, how basic is the bluray authoring in Final Cut Studio?
    I need the following:
1-Use a custom image for the background in the menu (but no moving clips, etc).
    2-Chapters.
3-Enclose an option for an extra short video (like "making off").
If that is done with FC Studio, it would be enough.
    Thanks for your help.
    Javier

    Hi Tom!
    Thanks for your help!
What I'm really interested is in the HD quality of the video. Flashy flying menus and camera angles I never used neither with commercial DVD or Blurays.
For authoring: I'll use a custom image (jpeg or whatever - probably a still from the video I shot) for the backgroud , 2 lines of title (1- full video and 2- extra short video) and chapters to jump to scenes.
In other hand, I shot a video mostly using time lapse with a Canon DSRL (TIFFs edited in Motion), set the FCPro project to 1920 x 1080 25p Apple proress 422 (HQ), and in a Full HD TV I use for monitor (with AJA HDMI converter) looks AWESOME! Images look as amazing as some Hollywood bluray I rented.
So as you can imagine,I don't want recompressions that may degrade the full HD video.
If that is possible with the FC Studio bluray basic authoring,I'm running monday to buy an external Bluray, like LA cie or else.
    Regards;
    Javier
P.D.: I posted in my site an HD clip made with the previous FCPro in Mpeg2. Now I'm using the H264. I didn't had an HD TV for monitor before. Did SD projects. Now the HD changes everything.

  • Need a great mac compatible DVD-BluRay burner

I have a late 2011 iMac, 32 GB memory, with a LaCie 4tb external thunderbolt hd.  I burned finished DVD's on the mac's 'super drive' or whatever it's called, but I can only burn regular DVD's that won't hold more than 45 minutes or so of any quality, plus the peeps said some wouldn't play on their t.v..  I need to purchase a DVD (bluRay also would be great) burner that can burn layers or large files with high quality and dependability.  Also, I purchased a quikie el cheapo DVD creator for menu's because I don't need the complications right now of big programs, but am wondering if it really matters what authoring/burning program you use (please say no).  It would seem that if I export my files in the proper format for DVD or BlueRay, the quality should transfer?  (Shouldn't the NTSC,H.S64, AAC 48kHz do for DVD, or H.264 Blue-ray 1080i 29.97 format options as supplied in PP work?)  Learning, ever learning.
    Thanks much in advance.

I have mixed HD (Panasonic P2 cards) and SD media in my sequences, so I need to stay with MPEG-2 until I get to the point of all HD content then.
If you are mixing HD and SD footage it is best to stay in an SD sequence (unless you absolutely must go HD for some reason) and author a regular DVD. If you up-scale SD content to HD you will loose quality.
    nadinefromwa wrote:
I, for some reason, thought the faster the burn the better the quality but not so.  I will stay slow.  And the bitrate has always been a mystery to me.  It seems like if I leave everything at the default in PP and Encore, I'll be okay.
The burn speed itself has nothing to do with the video quality of the final DVD. Lower burn speed simply means that will avoid write errors during the burn process. The video quality is determined by your encoder settings; The bitrate in general should not exceed 7.5 mb/s and you should use a constant bitrate for content under 60 min and variable bitrate for longer videos. Adobe Media Encoder certainly has more settings but I'm not that familiar with this particular piece of software.

One question - I found I could bring in my mxf files and size them to fit the frame in premier pro with the SD footage. Do you think that would create an issue for the final product?  (Although I didn't do that on the previous DVD's that didn't work)  I haven't attempted a burn yet from this mixed bag.
You would be better off asking Adobe-specific questions either in the Adobe forums or maybe over on the COW. I personally have very little experience with either Encore or Premiere Pro.
As is the case with most authoring software Encore will create DVD Images that can be played on your machine prior to burning. That means you can do tests to try out your workflows and settings without having to physically burn a DVD.

Also then, it sounds like I shouldn't need to worry about the new burner until I reach the point of wanting to burn bluray?  The iMac super drive should be fine for the regular DVD's for now?
Absolutely. Blu-ray is for HD and DVD is for SD.

  • DVD/BluRay disc will not play

I'm guessing this is a hardware issue, but could be wrong. I own a hp dv7 1260us. It's been with me to Afghanistan and back. For a while now I've noticed it's slow progression of imcompatibily with movie discs(DVD/BluRay), data(software) works fine. What might be the problem? Drivers for the disc drive say they are up to date. Should I it 7 on there instead ov vista? Or is there a work around that won't cost me money legally?

  • DVD-9 Authoring

I finally have a project that warrants DVD-9 authoring. I have never authored a DVD-9 only 5's. I am using Encore 1.5 and have a Sony 830A dual layer burner. The DVD will have a main menu with a Play Movie, Scene Selection, Trailer and Bonus Features. The main movie is about 95 min and then of course all the other movies are a shorter length. I have several questions.
    1) After it is contructed in Encore and I select Make DVD Disc - what should I expect to happen? Will the DVD burn normal to a DVD 9 disc or will there be a break in which I have to do something?
    2) Could this project be written to a DVD-9 disc or does it require a DLT?
    3) Will I encounter any errors or disc pasuign when it is played on consumer DVD players?
Anything info you can extend to me would be appreciated. I am totally new to the DVD-9 world.
    Thanks, Steve

    Steve.
    To answer your questions first.
1 - You must set a Layer Break. Written discs (and usually replicated discs) use a method known as OTP Mastering (Opposite Track Path). This is basically a way of telling the system how to create the disc, and requires Layer 0 to be bigger than Layer 1 as when the player gets to the end of Layer 0, after going from the inner part of the disc towards the outer part it will refocus onto Layer 1, and the read head will then travel back in the opposite direction to the inner of the disc.
This break point must fall between timelines for it to be seamless (Un-noticeable to the viewer) - failure to follow this guideline will result in a momentary freeze at the transition point. Whilst this is not out of spec, it is obviously undesirable. An alternative place for a layer break is at a convenient point in the main timeline - such as a blackout, or an obvious scene change. There must be a chapter marker at the required point.
2 - Depends on the intentions. If you want this to be replicated, use DLT tapes - one for each layer (If you want to use any form of Copy Protection, DLT use is mandatory as Encore is incapable of outputting a DDP image or a CMF image).
You can - if you really, really must, use a DVD-R DL disc (some factories will accept DVD+R DL, but this is NOT recommended as DVD+R is not a valid DVD-Forum approved format, and uses a completely different Layer Break system compared to DVD-R DL, which is an approved format. Most peoples issues with Layer Breaks are related to this fact. DVD+R DL will *always* split the content in half unless you over-ride this behaviour.
Another factor is reduced reflectivity is bad in all written media, but in DL media it is far, far worse. You should never use DL media asa production master at all.
i You will have compatibility problems if you do - guaranteed.
Include a DL playable disc as a
    i reference
disc so the factory can see what
    i should
    happen.
Always ask for a test mould as well. Much better to head off any issues before tens of thousands of discs are replicated.
3 - Almost certainly YES - unless you see point one above, and set the break at a point
    i between timelines.
In addition, you have other issues. Players are not required to play written discs at all. Most will play single layer discs, some -R and others +R, yet more will play both. Playback of a dingle layer +R disc is no guarantee the player will read a DL disc though. I have players here that will read a DVD+R but not a DVD+R DL - Layer 1 is inaccessible on these players.
Transition pauses are very common too - so unless you don't mind a pause, make absolutely certain you get the disc layout correct in the first place.
    Final note.
If DVD9 is not something you are doing already - get someone else to do it for you. There are many pitfalls for the unwary.

  • HP Pavilion Elite e9120y bios does not recognize any cd/dvd/bluray or hard disk drives

I erased my hard disk to install Windows 7.  Now my computer intermittently does not recognize that there are any drives attached to the sata ports.  I go into BIOS pressing F10 and it does not list any drives at all.  I have a DVD burner and a bluray and a western digital 1TB hard drive connected.  Sometimes they show that they are connected other times it doesn't.  It's strange.
When it does recognize there are drives connected, I boot up from the Windows 7 DVD.  Then I try to create a partition on the hard drive.  The installation recognizes a 930GB hard drive with no partitions.  Every time I try to create a partition, it says I need a driver for the hard drive.  I have a driver that I downloaded off of HP's website yesterday, the driver for nvidia sata.  I put it on my usb drive.  It recognizes it but says it is the wrong driver.  I don't know what else to do.  I have built dozens of computer and repaired hundreds, but I have never run across a problem like this and I hope you can help me.

Thanks for your help, but that's exactly the driver I used.  It didn't work.
My problem is not just with the hard drive.  All three drives (two optical, one hard disk) should show up in bios, whether or not there is a disk in the optical drive or a partition on the hard drive.  It intermittently stops detecting the drives.  One time I boot and go into BIOS they are there, and I can run installation of Windows (partially).  But if a turn off the computer and turn it back on, they've disappeared.  Sometimes they will be detected, sometimes they won't.
I'm thinking the driver problem with the Windows 7 Professional x64 installation is somehow connected to the drives randomly not showing up.  All drives stop showing up at the same time, not just the hard drive.  So it's not a driver issue.  It has to be connected to the BIOS and motherboard.
This computer is only 4 months out of warranty.
Any more help would be appreciated.

  • Need some help: About DVD/BD authoring in Encore 5.1

    Hello everyone,
I am new to Adobe Encore 5.1 (newly switched to)
I was wondering if anyone could help me with problems that i am currently dealing with.
I made some dvd everything works great in my laptop and dvd player, but when i sent those dvds to my favorite in America, she is telling that dvds aren't playing on her player there.
before creating my projects i did a little bit of research for creating dvds NTSC specifically that could be playble in US, but i guess it wasn't enough.
Anyways, all default footages were recorded in PAL system and I edited and converted them to NTSC system with Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10.0 application.
For dvd menus, I used Sony DVD Architect Studio 5.0 again NTSC default setting, from what i understood was that, DVD Architect studio creates free region and i didnt find any option for selecting region 1, 2 or 3, like Encore 5.1.
it seems to be a bit complicated or something, i need to make the things right. and i need your help.
I have another question, is it possible to make all your editings in Sony vegas and use Encore 5.1 for dvd or blu ray authoring.
    Thank you very much.

    Stan Jones wrote:
So one possibility is that they are not correct NTSC. Make a very short test sample of the video and put it in an Encore NTSC project with no menu. Make it first play. Build to an iso image. You can post that so we can burn and test it.
If she was able to play the menu, but not the movie, that's good. If not, you can also post the psd of the menu for us to test.
Thank you for replying back. Yesterday I contacted her back about those DVDs, she told me that 2 DVDs are working perfectly but other 2 dvds are giving format error on her Blu ray player. I assume, it might be burning problem or encoding, but all dvds are made with same settings. it's really weird to me.
About the content, I am not allow to upload them (upon my friend's request), but i will record some footage with the same setting and I will upload them here.

  • Burning additional DVD's authored in FCPX

    Hello,
The "sharing' facility to create a DVD from FCPX has no parametrs I can adjust. namely, the poor sound quality and levels.
In DVD Pro I could adjust the parametrs for optimum quality, and save that setting for all music video's.
Now that DVD Pro is no longer available my only option is to use Compressor and  to tweak my settings, but how do I burn the DVD from compressor?
The files that Copmpressor and FXPX build will not be imported by iDVD, and I don't actually want to use iDVD and it's templates.
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank ylou.

If you want to use iDVD, export as a plain QT ProRes 422 file.  iDVD will import and work with that.
To burn "multiple" copies in Compressor, write to Hard Drive, not the burner.  This makes a disk image.  Double-click to open it, then burn the TS_AUDIO and TS_VIDEO folders to a regular data DVD.

  • Why can't PC users read data DVDs I author on my Macbook???

    Hey everybody,
I'm having a problem with compatabilty of DVDs that I'm burning on my macbook pro running snow leopard. I'm burning hundreds of JPG photos to dvd and PC users are having difficulty accessing the discs. I'm using DVD-R format discs and burning through the finder? what am I doing wrong? Do I need a program like toast to have the most broadly compatible DVDs?
    Thanks!

Does seem a little strange since OS 10 uses HFS Plus/ISO 9660 hybrid formatting.
I do quite alot of disc burning for my commercial printer customers without any problems on either end.
Your method of burning on Mac side is ok although I insert my CD/DVD with no running applications and when dialog comes up "You inserted a blank CD/DVD. Choose an action." From the pop-up menu I select Ignore (as opposed to Open Finder) and then navigate to Folder I want to burn and then under File select Burn (name of folder I have selected). That method simply bypasses the making of aliases.
Doubt that is your issue however.
One possibility may be on the PC side. Like the Mac, a PC is picky about where files are put on the HD.
I tell my PC customers to insert the CD/DVD. Navigate My Computer to whatever letter is assigned as their CD/DVD drive (usually E). Open to view the contents.
Then open My Documents (which is similar to the Mac Home Documents Folder) and Drag the files from the disk to My Documents folder.
I have had to do this on occasion when my PC customers Claim they cannot copy the files only to learn they are attempting to copy the files to another area of the HD that the PC windows system does not like.
Just a thought since I have run into this problem in the past. Hope it may shed some light on your problem.

  • DVD / Bluray and Handbrake

    Hi,
I just got an apple TV and I love it. I installed handbrake AWESOME software. Don't get me wrong here I have a collection of 250 DVD (Legal) and now I want to transfert everything on AppltTV. I started already, I just bought a NAS HDD 1.5 Terabyte (LaCie 2Big Disk). Did not receive it yet.. it is in the mail!!! Now my mini HDD is getting full
I tried differen settings and the best Audio quality that I can get is ProLogic 5.1 (AC3) Is anyone got to encode DTS and had it to work in ATV?
I have Blu-ray discs and I wonder if handbrake would be able to encode it in HD... I do not have a blu-ray player for the mac yet but if somebody has done it maybe Ill invest and get rid of my standalone blu-ray player...
Also I which apple come up with a new version of iTune that is more "movie" friendly... I mean in the information details of the movie, I wich I could put Video Format, Audio Format, Rating (PG, 16+, General, 18+, etc) with a parental lock. And be able to retreive information like CDs (Pictures, years, Maybe producer, etc.) from itune store could be a great addition toon... And when Apple will sell HD format of their movie?? It is weird that I can rent a move in HD but only possible to buy it in Standard def...
    Have fun!!

you might need to upgrade your handbrake to 0.9.2...
if you have 0.9.2 then you just need to pick the correct setting and the AC-3 (5.1) sound track..
1st, choose the "appleTV" preset in the "presets drawer" on the right hand side of the window.. if not open click on the "toogle presets" button on top right of the screen and choose "appleTV"
on the "audio & subtitles" tab for Track 1 choose an AC3 (5.1) track... then in Track 1 Mix choose Dolby Prologic II + AC-3.. this option will format the movie as apple does for the movies they sell on the iTunes store.. i.e. with both a prologic II AND an AC-3 (dolby digital 5.1) track will be included in the movie so it will play everywhere... that's it.
i found that if i included a second track (i.e. put something for Track 2 and Track 2 Mix) it wouldn't work... so i wouldn't do that...

  • Qosmio G40: HD-DVD - BluRay drive replacement

    Hello,
Due to the latest events and Toshiba agreeing that it's lost the format war, I wonder if it is possible to replace that very-soon-unusable HD DVD drive to something that will be able to read/write upcoming movies WITHOUT loosing the warranty (G40).

Hi there, I have the same problem. I wanted a high-end laptop with a WUXGA screen and was torn between the Qosmio G40-108 and and another notebook. In the end I bought the Qosmio G40-108 because of HDMI 1.3 and the 512Mb nVidia graphics. Still it's a great laptop and the HDMI output on my Samsung HD TV is brilliant. I play everything using the latest PowerDVD Ultra and there's no need for standalones anymore.
In a way I'm glad that this latest format war is over (at least until the next new thing comes out).
I think the Qosmio drive is a 9.5mm SuperSlim drive. At this point I'm sure there are no BD drives of that size (and when they come out they'll be mega expensive anyway), so we have to wait and see.
I recently bought a Pioneer BDC-202 Blu-ray player/DVD recorder and I use that on the Qosmio via SATA to USB2 adapter, this setup covers all my BD playback needs.
It'be be good to know if changing the drive will invalidate warranty.

  • Y510p dvd/bluray burner for ultrabay

Does anyone know where I can purchase a dvd/blu ray burner for an ideapad y510p with Ultrabay. Or would the Ideapad y500 optical drive be compatible with my y510p??  Please Help!

  • External DVD/BluRay Burner recommendation

It's been awhile since I've had to do this kind of research, so I'm hoping that it's much simpler than I'm making it. These days, OS/hardware/software incompatibilities make me see red. Anyway...
The CD/DVD drive in my early 2008-era Intel iMac running OS 10.6.8 bit the dust awhile back and can not only NOT read disks, but always refuses to spit them out. In the cursory research I've done, it appears the laser reader is shot. Rather than pay to have a new one installed which would cost me substantially more, I'd prefer to just buy an external (yeah, like I need another USB/Firewire device connected to an already tach'd out hub) and if anyone has recommendations, I'd sure appreciate it hearing about it. I've heard good stuff about LGs, but I'm not necessarily tied to the best deal/cheapest...I just want something that has more longevity than what Apple put into the machine.
    Thanks!!

Not all DVD player units for computers are Mac compatible.
LG has a few and can be found on Amazon.com
    There are others found here.

Here's another source for Mac compatible optical drives. These are better quality optical drives.
These are also tray loading drives.
Tray loading optical drives are more reliable, plus they are capable of playing those smaller mini sized discs.

    OWC ( http://eshop.macsales.com/ ) has Blu-Ray playing drives, also.

  • What is the official Apple DVD Menu authoring software?

I'd like to know what the official and current Apple DVD Menu creation software is to be used in conjunction with Final Cut Pro X only. Thanks.

ProRes should now come on all Macs for playback. I can't test it, but it should work.
Tom, you may be right - I can't test either, since the macs I have are either too old or have FCP X installed.
Still, it may be that Jhuxman's mac doesn't have ProRes - that is something he can look up.
In principle, if a movie plays in Quicktime (with the possible exception of mpeg2), it should be handled properly by iDVD.
Jhuxman, does the movie play in Quicktime?

  • Video compression in After Effects

    Hi,
i have a little problem with video compression in After Effects. When I was looking for example on that video: http://vimeo.com/18672227 the quality in HD is really great. When we was trying to compress our video in After Effects, the best result, which we was able to get, had 80 MB and 18 seconds and the quality was still much worst than like the one which i posted above. 80 MB for only 18 secs of video and with that quality seems too much for me. I really doubt it is normal. Then for example video which i posted above should have 2000 MB and i really don't believe that.
Is there some way how to get HD quality video for internet streaming with affordable size from After Effect rendering compression? Which settings, formats or codecs I should use? Or do i need some other Adobe program which is builded for this better compressions?

You are looking for an easy answer where there is none. Yes, there are better tools than AE for final compression like Adobe Media Encoder, but your format will still be H.264. The rest is very much a matter of experience and a combination of settings for data rates, encoding passes and so on plus tricks on how to deal with Gamma shifts and color skewing due to the chroma undersampling. Without seeing the actual footage, nobody will be able to give you any exact pointers, but generally the presets you find in AE and AME will provide a good basis. The rest is just tippy-toeing through the settings and learning by doing. Also do some general research on the matter. Because it is so complex and difficult, this topic is discussed to death on pretty much every forum that deals with video editing, DVD/ BluRay authoring and ripping movies for fun...
