DVD Burn Failed-Matshita DVD-R UJ-815

Please help: I can not burn any DVDs. I am trying to burn some pictures from iPhoto to DVD for storage. I choose the pictures & then hit the burn icon at the bottom of iPhoto. It will run for about an hour but then stops. I keep getting "Burn Failed: the burn to the MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-815 drive failed. Unknown error." I've tried several TDK DVD-R 2x discs & the original Apple DVD-R that shipped with my computer. I am able to burn CDs with no problem but this is the first time I've tried to burn a DVD. Can you also tell me if I will be able to use TDK DVD-R 8x since I can't hardly find 2x or 4x anymore. Thanks to anyone for any help. I have lots of pictures & I've got to get them off of my computer. Thank you very much.

I'm having the same exact problem with my Powerbook I think, it's a 1GHz with the same Matshita DVD drive. It'll burn the disc apparently, but it never finishes. it just idles in "Closing Session 1" (i'm using a burn folder in Tiger now)...
but the problem also occurs in iDVD. and when i burn disc images.
i've found that when i see it idling (at the end of a burning cycle), i can usually eject the disc and have a working disc, but with no guarantee.
I want Apple to fix this!

There is only one option and that is to replace the drive. It is not expensive to perform the replacement yourself if you so choose.

  • New FireWire DVD Burner Plugged In - DVD Player Wants To Change Region?!

I have just bought an external Freecom FW/USB 2.0 DVD Burner.
As part of my testing, I inserted a DVD-R video I had made and attempted to view it via DVD Player.
However, I got a warning window saying that as this was the first time I had played a DVD I would have to set the region.
This DVD is a home-movie and as such has no region.
Needless to say, the DVD plays perfectly when using the Superdrive.
If I did set the region would it only apply to the Freecom or would it be one of the 5 changes you are able to make to the Superdrive?
Is every DVD burner allowed 5 changes of region?
I have not attempted to change the region as normally I will not be using the Freecom to play DVDs . . . . . just burning and copying.
What exactly does changing the region affect? The DVD Burner, my iMac, DVD Player or what?

    Hi Ian,
most if not all computer DVD drives allow up to 5 changes of the region code with the 5th being the last and permanent one.
The region code itself is saved inside the drive itself and each drive is 'for it's own'.

  • DVD burn fails on symlink

I'm trying to burn a DVD backup of a directory that contains some symbolic links to other directories, and the burn fails every time. If I drag the directory to the blank DVD, then try to remove the symbolic links from the burn folder, they actually get removed from the "real" folder! Does anyone know a way around this? At the very least, I need some way to gracefully get around having a symbolic link -- some way that doesn't involve creating a coaster, which so far is all I've been able to do.
EDIT: So, it looks like it wasn't the symlinks at all, but something more generally related to backing up the ~/Library folder, per this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7e70f. I have to say. I tried fixing permissions, but no luck, I just made my sixth coaster of the night trying to backup my own files. This is frankly ridiculous: Not only does the folder inexplicably avoid being burned, but it crashes the entire burn process, not at the point of preparation, but mid-burn.
Second, burning for me is slow, just 2X. I've seen a couple of recent threads on this issue, but they're with Rev B iMacs as I understand. I'm using a Rev. A, with the Pioneer DVR-KO4F. Is there any way to improve the speed?
    Thanks very much-

    Hi
It sounds as if it may be lack of free disk space, or lack of contiguous free disk space. How much do you have left on your main drive? Perhaps deleting some unwanted files would help.
If your drive is highly fragmented the DVD image may be scattered all over the disk, causing a buffer underrun, especially if you're running the burning software off the same drive. You can buy software to defragment it, although OS X defragments small files on the fly so it's not normally needed. Perhaps burning at a slower speed would give the drive time to keep the buffer full. Freeing up some disk space should also help though, so there's more contiguous free space available

  • DVD Burn fails (Error code 0x80020022), newish drive, just applied updates

    Hello,
when i try to burn a data dvd with a variety of files from finder on my power mac g5 it thinks a while and then fails with the message:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed (Error code 0x80020022)
I just downloaded the latest OS updates last night.
Disc utility showed permissions problems in some files on my boot drive including in a darwin folder but they repaired fine.
Two weeks ago apple replaced my superdrive and i hadn't tried burning a dvd since then, but cds did and do burn fine.
This computer is under warrantee but in case the latest software updates caused this, or if someone has an easy fix that would allow me to save the trip to the store for analysis and potential couple day wait...
    i'm all ears!
    Thanks, Will

    Thank you for your help!
At one point in the last few days i did run out of disk space on one drive, but i think i had 5Gig free on the short drive when i was trying it earlier, and i have upped that to 30.
My spindled HP DV-16Xs worked on the drive i had before pretty darn well.. I've tried a bunch of unlabeled ones, i've also tried burning at 1x, and i went out and bought some jewel cased verbatim dvd-r 16Xs, same problem.
I will take one more shot at finding the best media using that website, get some 8Xs if i can find them, before hauling it into apple.
without the dvd burner it's hard to backup very well, I was planning to get a external hard drive next month.

  • Burn to Lightscribe DVD+R media on External LaCie d2 DVD burner fails

Recently the Superdrive in my iMac G4 has failed where it would no longer burn DVD's reliably. I purchased a LaCie external firewire DVD burner and have been very impressed with its speed and overall compatibility.
I have created several DVDs from iDVD 5.0.1 (written to disk images) and then burned them to DVD-R media using "Disk Utility" with no problems. When I tried to burn them to LightScribe DVD+R media, the burn occurs with no errors and the DVD mounts and plays fine from the LaCie burner. However, trying to play the DVD from my original SuperDrive or in my home DVD players, does not work.
Is there some incompatibility I am unaware of? I believe I created one lightscribe DVD from Toast 7 where I was playing around with duplicating an existing DVD I had and it worked fine. I think the media I used in that case was one provided with the drive and I burned it from toast.
My lightscribe media is Verbatim LightScribe DVD+R media (30 pack). I don't want to consider these coasters. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

It identified write restrictions, but my goal was to write a playable DVD and it fails in both my SuperDrive and off-the-shelf DVD players.
Thanks for the idea, but I'm not sure that this is the issue in this case. Is there some basic compatibility issue with using DVD+R media as a playable DVD for most off-the-shelf players?

  • Slow burn with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E

Burning of 3.54 GB took over 12 minutes with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E. Finder allows me to burn with 8X but still the actual speed is far from it. This is extremely disappointing. New firmware is needed or similar.

  • How to succesfully burn a dual layer DVD with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846?

I cannot burn EMTEC DVD+R DL discs on my iMac 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with a MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846. I get the "The unit could not calibrate the laser for this medium.." error.
Can anyone confirm a DVD brand that will actually work?

Thanks, I will try them next time.
In the meantime, I was able to burn my EMTEC DVD+R DL discs using my MacBook (2.0 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo) with an HL-DT-ST DVDRW GWA4080MA without any problems whatsoever.

  • T500 dvd burner fails hl-dt dvdram gsa-u20n

my dvd burner has failed strangely -- the dvd-r and dvd+r fail to burn. However I can burn cd-r and dvd+rw.
I have tried many blank disks(dvd-r) . I reloaded to device driver.
I tried the lenovo diagnostics which give an error code for dvd-r of 2102H
and an error code of 0c00h for dvd+r
Any help on figuring whether the burner hardware is broken or there is some other problem software etc.
The firware level is HX10  and the driver is usoft, date 7/1/2001, version 5.1.2535.0

I did finally burn the disk. However, I am going to close out the problem. I borrowed an external burner and was able to burn a a blank dvd that failed to burn previously.
Somebody suggest to me that I reseat the dvd burner from my laptop. I puled it out pushed it in then it worked one time
before failing. I then tried puling it in and out several times and it seems to be working. I know this may not be a perfect solution as it indicates that the contacts may have a problem.
My ultimate thought is to buy an external burner and use the ultra bay(which has the dvd burner) for more storage.
Thank you for your diagnostic suggestions.
I'll carry the pcdoctor disk in case I have future problems.

  • DVD burn fails on verify consistantly, unless you boot from another disk...

    Guys,
I have a dual G4. Always seemed to be able to burn a DVD. Now, Popcorn, disk utility and toast all fail verify for DVD burns.
If I boot from my backup disk and burn using popcorn, toast or disk utility it burns and verifies fine. Both are Tiger 10.4.8, one has many things installed, the back up drive has few things.
It seems to exonerate the hardware and my verbatim media.

  • DVD burner not recognizing DVDs

I've had a mini for quite some time now, and recently in the past few weeks I've had a strange problem where it no longer recognizes burnable/burned DVDs. CDs work fine, retail DVDs on movies work fine, but I am unable to access any of the things I've burned myself.
I've tried 3 of the types of burnable DVDs, and have even dug up some of my old DVDs I burned myself on this computer and they all do not mount. I've checked the system info, and the drive is still being detected as a DVD burner, so I am at a complete loss as to what could be causing this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm having exactly the same problem as this.
The last discs that I burned would have been in October/November, and after that I noticed that the Mac would no longer recognise burned DVD's.
As I need to burn some more discs I've been testing in the past few days and can confirm:
    1. Will not read from burned DVD-R
    2. Will not recognize blank DVD-R
    3. Will recognize blank DVD-RW, but will not burn to them
I'm now searching around to see if it's a hardware or a firmware problem.
The data on the drive from System Profiler is as follows:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835F:

  • DVD burns & non-readable DVD's

(moderators - please relocate this question to appropriate place, this seemed the best spot)
I'm having trouble getting freshly burned DVD's to mount it the two newest macs that we have in-house:
    - Dual 1.25 Ghz G4 tower 'mirror door', running OS 10.3.9, 1.25GB RAM
    - iMac 1.8 Ghz G5, running OS 10.3.9, 768GB RAM
    I burn DVD's on our Dual 2Ghz G5 Server (running Server 10.3.9)
these DVD's sometimes mount (after a looooong wait) or not at all
same DVD that fails will mount on our old 400GHz G4 'YIKES' ???
same DVD will mount on the server
Is the DVD firmware in OS X Server 10.3.9 different from the one in OS X 10.3.9
    solutions??
    - is there a DVD firmware upgrade somewhere on the apple site (I check the upgrades religiously)
    - can it be a bad batch of DVD's (seems really, really iffy)
    suggestions anyone?

    Hello Debbie,
did you create the disk image? If so, did you test it with DVD Player?
If the disk image plays fine in DVD Player, the problem is in the burn pocess itself. What DVD media did you use and at what speed did you burn? You might want to try another brand - Verbatim DVD-R is first choice around here, but Ritek and Taiyo Yuden also make very good discs.
You also need to make sure the DVDs are compatible with slow burning (e.g. 1-4x). Try burning at the slowest possible speed (1x if possible).

Another thing you can try is a cleaning disc. Burners get a little dusty over time and if the lens is not perfectly clean, that might lead to burn errors.

  • DVD Burning Error within DVD Studio Pro

    Hi There,
Tonight I tried to burn a DVD Studio Pro project to a DVD. Up until now it has been smooth sailing. Tonight when I went to burn my completed project, it began formatting and then I received a Unknown Device Error after the DVD drive worked for about 2 minutes. If anyone has any ideas or if you think I need a new drive please let me know. The drive information is below:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846:
    Firmware Revision: FQ3T
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB

    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

First thing is to diagnose if the drive is a problem by putting in a DVD and trying a burn other than from Studio Pro. How's that work?
The formatting part is interesting, formatting what exactly?
