DVD burn fails on verify consistantly, unless you boot from another disk...

Guys,
I have a dual G4. Always seemed to be able to burn a DVD. Now, Popcorn, disk utility and toast all fail verify for DVD burns.
If I boot from my backup disk and burn using popcorn, toast or disk utility it burns and verifies fine. Both are Tiger 10.4.8, one has many things installed, the back up drive has few things.
It seems to exonerate the hardware and my verbatim media.
Any ideas?

Hi
It sounds as if it may be lack of free disk space, or lack of contiguous free disk space. How much do you have left on your main drive? Perhaps deleting some unwanted files would help.
If your drive is highly fragmented the DVD image may be scattered all over the disk, causing a buffer underrun, especially if you're running the burning software off the same drive. You can buy software to defragment it, although OS X defragments small files on the fly so it's not normally needed. Perhaps burning at a slower speed would give the drive time to keep the buffer full. Freeing up some disk space should also help though, so there's more contiguous free space available

  • Why do my dvd burns fail to verify

Several attempts to burn dvds have resulted if failures to verify. It seems to burn fine, but will not verify and tells me the disk may be unreliable. I am using Delkin Devices Archival Gold DVD-R discs. Burned at both x6 and x8. The first 6 or so burned and verified fine, but the last 4 have not been verifyable. Any thoughts?

    There could be several reasons:
iMac Superdrives are extremely finicky - mine only likes Verbatim for instance. So you might want to try a different brand; another way to get consistent good burns is to burn slowly - I set mine at the slowest speed available; I'd rather wait a few more minutes. I also do not do anything else during the burn process (and turn off screensaver/sleep). And, the drives are not sturdy desktop models, they get hot - so I would not burn more than two at most and then let it cool down for at least 15 - 20 minutes. For all of the above reasons, I usually use a desktop sturdy tray loaded burner which just works. But, even using the internal, I've never had a coaster.

There is only one option and that is to replace the drive. It is not expensive to perform the replacement yourself if you so choose.

  • T500 dvd burner fails hl-dt dvdram gsa-u20n

my dvd burner has failed strangely -- the dvd-r and dvd+r fail to burn. However I can burn cd-r and dvd+rw.
I have tried many blank disks(dvd-r) . I reloaded to device driver.
I tried the lenovo diagnostics which give an error code for dvd-r of 2102H
and an error code of 0c00h for dvd+r
Any help on figuring whether the burner hardware is broken or there is some other problem software etc.
The firware level is HX10  and the driver is usoft, date 7/1/2001, version 5.1.2535.0

I did finally burn the disk. However, I am going to close out the problem. I borrowed an external burner and was able to burn a a blank dvd that failed to burn previously.
Somebody suggest to me that I reseat the dvd burner from my laptop. I puled it out pushed it in then it worked one time
before failing. I then tried puling it in and out several times and it seems to be working. I know this may not be a perfect solution as it indicates that the contacts may have a problem.
My ultimate thought is to buy an external burner and use the ultra bay(which has the dvd burner) for more storage.
Thank you for your diagnostic suggestions.
I'll carry the pcdoctor disk in case I have future problems.

  • Cannot Boot From Internal Disk After Failed Firmware Update

    Xserve 1,1 (Late 2006)
After a failed firmware update the server will not boot from an internal volume.
I have tried the firmware restoration CD 1.4 without success due to the following:
I press the sleep LED but only get the initial three fast blinks, not the next slower three blinks, and the last three fast blinks.
I can boot in Target Mode, NetBoot, from an installation CD. The volume with the OS (10.5) is recognized by another machine, but the server will not boot from it.
I have tried reinstalling the OS on another drive, and repairing the drive.
    I would appreciate any suggestions.

I read somewhere that it might have to do with the fact that it says "S.M.A.R.T. not supported" on DU. Is there any way to fix this? does it mean I'll need a new drive soon?
I think something else is afoot. I believe that, when you boot from the the system/install and run DU from there, DU does not recognize SMART reporting.
Before I recently updated my MBP to 10.5.7, I ran DU from the DVD to verify the disk before applying the update (I'm cautious about those updates). It gave the same report you are seeing. Once I was booted from the hard drive, the SMART status report returned to normal. SMART will typically report "failing, not "not supported" if the drive is going bad.

  • Do you boot from an external startup disk?  Which one?

My IOmega USb 80gb will not be recognized as a volume that can accept the OS X install from the disk (10.4.3). I need the room for the jampacks and Reason 3.0 apps and I only have 10gb left on the internal harddrive. Does it need to a fire wire port with the appropriate partition and format to get the install software on the disk to be able to be the start up disk. If I get the "This volume can not run OS X " again on another drive I will be ******. Please let me know what external drive you boot from on your iBook

    John,
No, I don't think it can. I believe you need to use Mac OS Extended Journaled (HFS+) unless you specifically need to use UFS (Unix File System). Knowledge Base Document #301270 says:
    Volume format choices
Once you've selected this option, you can choose from two types of volume formats:
Mac OS Extended (Journaled)—This is the default option and should be used unless you have a specific reason not to.
UNIX File System—Only choose this option if you specifically need it.
I believe it is the same reason you need HSF+ in order to use CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner).

  • Can't boot from hard disk or from windows 7 recovery dvd

    I have a 970A-G46 motherboard.
I can't boot from hard disk or from a windows 7 recovery dvd.
If I move the hard drive to another PC, it boots fine.
If I put the DVD in another PC's dvd drive, it can be accessed.
This machine will boot from an Ubuntu dvd and I can then access the HD directories and the recovery dvd.
What do I need to do?
    Help and thanks

What is that DVD from? Is it from a previous computer of some kind? Same question for HDD and the OS on it.

  • DVD burn fails on symlink

I'm trying to burn a DVD backup of a directory that contains some symbolic links to other directories, and the burn fails every time. If I drag the directory to the blank DVD, then try to remove the symbolic links from the burn folder, they actually get removed from the "real" folder! Does anyone know a way around this? At the very least, I need some way to gracefully get around having a symbolic link -- some way that doesn't involve creating a coaster, which so far is all I've been able to do.
EDIT: So, it looks like it wasn't the symlinks at all, but something more generally related to backing up the ~/Library folder, per this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/webx?128@@.68b7e70f. I have to say. I tried fixing permissions, but no luck, I just made my sixth coaster of the night trying to backup my own files. This is frankly ridiculous: Not only does the folder inexplicably avoid being burned, but it crashes the entire burn process, not at the point of preparation, but mid-burn.
Second, burning for me is slow, just 2X. I've seen a couple of recent threads on this issue, but they're with Rev B iMacs as I understand. I'm using a Rev. A, with the Pioneer DVR-KO4F. Is there any way to improve the speed?
    Thanks very much-

    Hello,
when i try to burn a data dvd with a variety of files from finder on my power mac g5 it thinks a while and then fails with the message:
Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed (Error code 0x80020022)
I just downloaded the latest OS updates last night.
Disc utility showed permissions problems in some files on my boot drive including in a darwin folder but they repaired fine.
Two weeks ago apple replaced my superdrive and i hadn't tried burning a dvd since then, but cds did and do burn fine.
This computer is under warrantee but in case the latest software updates caused this, or if someone has an easy fix that would allow me to save the trip to the store for analysis and potential couple day wait...
    i'm all ears!

At one point in the last few days i did run out of disk space on one drive, but i think i had 5Gig free on the short drive when i was trying it earlier, and i have upped that to 30.
My spindled HP DV-16Xs worked on the drive i had before pretty darn well.. I've tried a bunch of unlabeled ones, i've also tried burning at 1x, and i went out and bought some jewel cased verbatim dvd-r 16Xs, same problem.
I will take one more shot at finding the best media using that website, get some 8Xs if i can find them, before hauling it into apple.
without the dvd burner it's hard to backup very well, I was planning to get a external hard drive next month.

Can you also tell me if I will be able to use TDK DVD-R 8x since I can't hardly find 2x or 4x anymore. Thanks to anyone for any help. but the problem also occurs in iDVD. and when i burn disc images.
i've found that when i see it idling (at the end of a burning cycle), i can usually eject the disc and have a working disc, but with no guarantee.

Recovery partition is meant to be used on a working system, it can however be used in a different manner but is difficult for most people unless you are a computer geek of sorts.
See this thread on how someone used the files from the restore partition to recover to a new hard drive, you would need another working Windows PC to do this.

If you call HP on the phone they can verify for sure if they have the recovery discs or not.
If they do not, you can purchase them here

  • Burn to Lightscribe DVD+R media on External LaCie d2 DVD burner fails

Recently the Superdrive in my iMac G4 has failed where it would no longer burn DVD's reliably. I purchased a LaCie external firewire DVD burner and have been very impressed with its speed and overall compatibility.
I have created several DVDs from iDVD 5.0.1 (written to disk images) and then burned them to DVD-R media using "Disk Utility" with no problems. When I tried to burn them to LightScribe DVD+R media, the burn occurs with no errors and the DVD mounts and plays fine from the LaCie burner. However, trying to play the DVD from my original SuperDrive or in my home DVD players, does not work.
Is there some incompatibility I am unaware of? I believe I created one lightscribe DVD from Toast 7 where I was playing around with duplicating an existing DVD I had and it worked fine. I think the media I used in that case was one provided with the drive and I burned it from toast.
My lightscribe media is Verbatim LightScribe DVD+R media (30 pack). I don't want to consider these coasters. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated.

  • PowerBook 17 crashes consistently, even when booted from Tiger DVD

We have a new PowerBook 17 that has started giving us problems in the last day or so. It will hang after running for a few minutes. This is a consistent problem - it doesn't go away for an hour, or a day - if the machine is running, it will hang. There is no kernel panic, no dialogue box, the trackpad, mouse, etc. simply stop responding (the clock freezes too, so I know the system is hanging up - not just input devices).
I've managed to run throught most of the normal trouble-shooting methods, I say "managed" because the machine froze when I was booting into single user mode. So I went to the Tiger DVD that shipped with the laptop. Upon getting to the language selection dialog box - it froze again (no mouse, keyboard activity, etc.). Eventually, the machine did boot from the startup DVD - and I ran disk utility. Of course it found no problems with permissions or the disk because this is apparently hardware related, no?
That being said, an archive and install will probably do us no good. But would Tech Tools (came with our AppleCare) manage to at least spot a Hardware issue? At this point, the only thing I haven't done is removed the third-party RAM we installed (which has been installed for nearly two weeks with no sign of conflict). That will be the next course of action and we'll run Tech Tools. Any ideas or suggestions regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated. We all know that being down one machine is not a good thing - thanks in advance for any assistance.

    David,
I always had a pristine system: no kernel panics, no system hangs. Then, one day I started to have kernel panics and hang ups and when I tried to install XCode it failed, then I couldn't install iWork '06. At first I thought it was a problem with the disk until I decided to run Apple's hardware test. After all, it was just a problem with one of the 512MBs memory DIMMs. Removed the offending DIMM and everything went back to normal.
So, I think you should try the hardware test. To do this just start up from the original installation disk while pressing the option key and then choose Apple Hardware Test from the available startup disks.
