DVD BURN - MPEG-2

Using PE4 in XP Home.....I have my first show finished and have burned it to a DVD.  I am very pleased that it plays successfully on televison; however, when I try to play on a PC in Windows Media PlayerI I receive an error message that it is in MPEG-2 and a decoder is required.  I would like to create a DVD that plays on both TV and PC.  Is there a work-around that would allow me to do this?
Thanks much.  Joe

The VLC Media Player is a great DVD/Mpeg2 Player and it's free.
It can be downloaded here:
http://www.videolan.org/
If you prefer Win Media Player, you can download and install the DScaler5008 Codec (it's an executable).
As Ed referenced above, it's free and can be found on CNET at this link:
http://www.cnet.com/1770-5_1-0.html?query=DScaler&tag=srchhttp://www.free-codecs.com/reviews/dscaler_mpeg_filters.htm
Although I run both Players, my preference leans towards the VLC Player...

I was just wondering how (if posible) can you burn videos downloaded by itunes on to a DVD. i have a DVD burner but it doesn't work becuase it is not in the right format... is there another program that will allow me to do that?
      Windows XP

Depends. If it has digital rights management on it. No. You are stuck. However, look into MPEG Streamclip. See if it will export the footage into a DV file.

  • DVD Burn problem. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use"

    Hello everyone,
I initially had a lot of problems with PE8. However the nVidia driver update solved most of them.
Just thought it was important to report success as well as failure!
However one problem remains. I get the following error at the 96% mark while burning. "Device error - the target device isn't suitable for use". It is always at the 96% mark and the program is "compiling [something]" when this happens.
Having searched this site I notice that user rgferg posted a similar problem 13 days ago but was redirected to repost in a different place, but never did.
I have tried to burn a 1hr clip 4 times and every time I have selected the slower burn speed (8MB/s) as has been suggested. It seems that inferior media is a culprit, so I have bought some [quality] Verbatim DVD-R media to try in my Phillips SATA optical drive. I am sceptical this will work, but open minded nonetheless. I will give it a whirl when my computer has stopped capturing the VHS I am working on.
Each time the burn failed the disk was automatically ejected and the burn process had actually started and progressed perhaps ~40% or so.
This indicates to me that it is a drive sharing issue, rather than a media issue. Somewhere on this forum it suggests that I go through a 20+ step process and delete/disable every piece of software that can compete with Premiere among other things. IF I do this what do I burn with outside of Adobe? Do I have to get imgburn or whatever it was called? What if I like Nero? Nero 6 has worked great for me for 3 years.
So given I am willing to uninstall my old optical drive burning software, who out there can recommened commercial software that for them creates a painless Adobe burning experience with no errors or conflicts? Perhaps there is another solution that I did not see on this forum?
I am running Windows XP SP3. I have the latest nVidia drivers for my SLI GeForce 7600 GS cards. I have 3 monitors. RAID 0 SATA, 2GB RAM, Athlon X2 5400.
    Justin.

OK been working through the list of 20 things Adobe recommends to fix DVD burn error. No luck yet:
    system meets minimum requirements
Project size does not exceed disk capacity
successfully burned project to DVD folder -thus skip to step 8.
      8.   Using new blank media for burning
      9.   Try different media and DVD burners. Bought Verbatim DVD-R. Don't have another DVD burner. Adobe's supported burner list is VERY short, so of course mine is not on it.
      10.  Uninstalled Nero 6. Did NOT uninstall Acronis True Image workstation or Lightscribe. These do not access the drive unless I say so!
      11.  Have not yet disabled startup items and services. This will take a lot of work and will leave to last. Deactivated Spybot thus far.....
      12.  Disabled IMAPI CD burning COM
      13.  DMA if available already set. Haven't set this in BIOS yet. I already think it is, but will check next boot.
      14.  Updated DVD firmware
      15.  Already updated nVidia drivers
      16.  Don't have any other DVD drives to disconnect.
      17.  MPEG workaround. Will resort to if required.
      18.  Disable Autoplay? XP only has "prompt me each time to choose an action". I have set this for ALL file types.
      19.  Have NOT refreshed the DVD drivers in the registry. This step involves uninstalling PE8. Will leave this as last resort.
      20.  Visit forums to see if other have the same problem. Hi guys
So still working through some of the items above.
Can anyone direct me to advice on how to write the encoded files sent to the hard drive, or the VOB files that PE8 failed to burn to a disk? Will the former work with DVD menus?
    What a process.
    Stay tuned.
    Justin.

  • DVD burner recommendations

Hi. I have a dual G5 Mac running 10.4, and I'm looking for DVD burning software (besides iDVD). I need it to be able to:
    - burn 2-4 hours of video
    - source from avis or mpegs
    - build simple menus
    - (most importantly) burn a disk that will play correctly in a PAL/region 4 (Australian) DVD player; I have no way of testing this, so it's important that this be a reliable, well-tested feature.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Not sure of the extent project needs could be met by a freeware opensource
disc burning utility; but even if it should not meet one project's expectations,
this is handy and works well for many items. There is additional info on site.
    http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net
{Of course, there are pro utilities such as Toast; and others out there which
    should be capable of producing a recorded DVD within your parameters.}
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How to identify which applicarion is using the DVD burner?

How to identify which applicarion is using the DVD burner? Ot is not allow me to burn the DVDs genetrated in the Final Cut 7

I think you'll find that the application is Final Cut Pro...  the message is bug.  I get a similar message when disconnecting external drives after using them with FCP (even when the project is no longer loaded.)
As I mentioned above, the accepted workflow is to export the sequence to one of your hard drives using the Export>QuickTime Movie path with Settings:Current Settings and Make Movie Self-Contained checked like this:
This gets you a high quality "master copy" which you open in Compressor for transcoding. You should use the DVD: Best Quality setting for the duration of your movie.
this gets you the high quality MPEG-2 and AC-3 files for DVD Studio Pro authoring.
If you've never used DVD Studio Pro before, you can use iDVD instead. For iDVD, you just drag and drop your "master" on iDVD and it takes it from there. Both make a very professional product.
    hope this helps.

  • Best DVD Burning Software for My Powerbook

I just got a burner and was curious as to what the best software for burning was?

The point is Popcorn does two things - compresses non-protected DVD media to fit a single DVD and some file conversions many of which you can cover with QT pro or MPEG Streamclip.
Toast 7 does as well plus is a full service DVD /CD writiing program. Popcorn came out while Toast 6 existed which did not compress.
For some reason Roxio still pitches Popcorn 2 and tries to sell it relentlessly to Toast 7 owners at a discount, which makes no sense. Since Toast 7 has the technology. I guess I should not be surprised as Roxio still pitches the new Toast 7 to people who already upgraded at a discount to Toast 7. From Roxio.
As for a DVD burning program, it is not that at all - it is a MPEG-2 compressor and that is the extent of its value other than file conversions. You cannot make data discs or anything else since that would limit sales of Toast 7.
The OP wanted a DVD burning program not a one hit wonder. Too bad you bought Popcorn, no need to flog it to people who want better.

  • Any good alternatives to DVD burning? VCD? S-VHS?

I am totally disillusioned with the time it takes to encode and burn a DVD with my PB. AppleCare acknowledges that it takes 8x - 10x source material for successful burning & if you look on these (amazingly honest & helpful)forums you soon learn that DVD burning on any Mac can be very intimidating and problematic.
I am wondering if there is info readily available for alternatives:
    1. VCD burning. I have a ton of small clips and could trim down larger clips to burn onto cds. Are there crazy problems with this as with DVDs?
    2. This PB has an S-VHS output & I got a stereo audio cord for output. Will videos created like this be viewable? I suppose it depends on the quality of original material & how do I find this info?
My PB is loaded with every imaginable video and audio pro & standard app. including ToastTitanium7, FinalCutPro, CinemaTools, DVD-StudioPro, QuickTimePro7 etc.
I was praying that DVD burning was a lot simpler than my experiences with Windows based machines. There one needed to have a stand alone powerhouse & Re-Install Windows every couple dozen burns to get rid of all the corruption but not even doing that with a Mac seems to make the process as easy as Advertised. Live & learn.
    thanks,
    frank

I can only speak from my experience, but I've not found creating and burning DVDs to be at all intimidating and certainly not problematic. Every video DVD I've created has gone smoothly; your mileage may vary, of course. Please note that these forums are for people who are having problems; the many, many people who use their systems with no trouble at all have little incentive to post in a troubleshooting forum.
I notice that you list a number of pro apps including DVD Studio Pro; DVDSP is not intended for consumer use and has a very steep learning curve (although DVDSP 4 has a mode with a simplified interface that's easier, but it still takes some learning). If you want simple, you should be using iDVD; that's Apple's consumer application for creating video DVDs, and the latest versions of iDVD and iMovie (part of iLife '06) make it, in my experience, about as easy as it can get. You can get results with DVD Studio Pro that you cannot with iDVD, but it's going to take work, just as working with FInal Cut Pro will involve more learning time than working with iMovie.
As to creation time for the disk, that's strictly a function of how fast your system can process. Compressing to MPEG-2 (which is the format video DVDs use and which is what takes the majority of the time involved in burning the DVD) takes a lot of processor horsepower, and a single-processor PowerBook isn't going to be as fast as a dual-processor G4 and much less so than a G5. If you're encoding and burning DVDs regularly, you might want to consider moving to a system with higher processing power. To optimize compression time on your PB in the meanwhile, make sure that no other application is running when you're processing the DVD and that your system has plenty of available hard drive space (for the temporary files that will be created).
As to alternatives, that depends on your needs. If you need playback in a DVD player, then burning a DVD will be your best route. Very few players can play a VCD, and as MacNoel said, quality isn't stellar. Whether or not VHS would be an acceptable alternative only you can say.
    Regards.

  • DVD burning errors

I am having a terrible time with DVD burning. The video is digitizing coming out of DVD studio pro and audio is cutting in and out. My bit rate has has been set at max 7 and min 6 awell I have tried max7 min 5. The mpeg 2 files are created from final cut to comprossor hight quality mode. I am now getting errors on burning with my internal sony DVD RW DW-U21A drive. Out of toast with the video TS file error message is Sense Key = Medium Error Sense code =0x73x, 0x04. When I try to burn out of DVD STP it burns right to the end and gives a error message Disk image not written. Help any ideas

Okay so I guess this had multiple issue in my question. I seemed to resolve my dvd ouput issue with the audio and video breaking out. I wrote to my external firewire drive in stead of my internal. It seemed to work??
The dvd burning is a mistry to me.
I am half way through my media which is a 100 disk spindel Maxell DVD-R 8x 4.7gig 2 hrs. If I burn on my pineer external drive with these disks the player will not read it. So I have been using my sony internal which up until now has worked fine. Now I am getting the error messages indicated in my original message. So I tried different media Sony DVD-R 120 min 4.7 gig 1x to 16 times. My Sony internal rejects this media completely with an error disk not written from Toast and from DVD STP it says that the drive is not ready. Will not even attempt to write to it. I write with this media in my external and it is fine I am currently watching it and seems fine???

  • Compression & DVD Burning Options

I am beginning a fairly large project of digitizing 36 VHS tapes of home movies (recordings of Super 8 projections with grandfather narrating) recorded at SP (2hr) and EP (4hr) record modes. I'm using iMovie because it's easy to use and was thinking of using iDVD for the same reason. But, something that came to mind as an option I wanted to explore was being able to fit the contents of multiple VHS tapes (vary 2-4hrs) on to a single DVD without losing too much of the already poor quality. Any ideas? My secondary goal is to keep it as simple as possible because of the large quantity of video I am dealing with.
PS–I'm importing through a Miglia AlchemyTV DVR PCI card, but I don't think that matters.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

iMovie handles DV (..as in miniDV tapes or Digital-8 tapes..) which is a pretty much non-compressed format. iMovie doesn't normally include a facility to compress video down to smaller filesizes, except when you Share or Export to some QuickTime setting.
iDVD normally expects to take in some iMovie (miniDV or D-8) footage, and then compress it into MPEG-2 format for burning onto a DVD.
iDVD is only concerned with maximum play-times, and will normally encode only up to 2 hrs on a single-layer disc.
So by bringing your old videos into iMovie and then burning them with iDVD you're up against a 2-hrs-per-disc limit.
After bringing video into iMovie, you might consider exporting it as, for instance, Expert Settings and then Motion JPEG-A (..similar to the sharp, but compressed, movies in Apple's Tutorials..) with audio set to Mono 32000.
This should produce very small, but sharp-looking, files which you can burn - as data - onto a CD or DVD. This will play in a computer, but not on an ordinary DVD player. (..I've just done one while I was writing this; I compressed a 5-minute 21.59GB HDV movie down to 751.9MB, and it looks as sharp as the original Hi-Def footage!..)
Once you burn these small files onto a DVD - using, say, Roxio's Toast - you'll hit the limits (..due to the DVD-burning program's encoding rules..) of 2 hrs, or possibly 4 hrs, per DVD again.
But have you considered using a recent model Philips standalone DVD Recorder? The maximum time which can be squeezed onto a DVD+R or DVD+RW has now been -s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d- to 6 or 8 hrs!
Doing that, you could by-pass iMovie/iDVD altogether, and just import straight onto a blank DVD. You wouldn't clog your computer's hard drive with all that footage; you wouldn't need to wait - for hours - while iDVD transcodes the DV footage into MPEG-2 for burning; it'll burn in 'real time' (an hour's footage taking an hour to burn onto a disc) and you'll save yourself a lot of heartache! ..And yes; you can pause the DVD Recorder while you change VHS tapes, then continue. I find it the simplest way to burn old footage to DVDs.

  • Best DVD burning program

Well, since BURN doesn't work with Mavericks anymore, and iDVD isn't around (as far as  I know), has anyone got any recommendations on a a good (preferably free, or maybe inexpensive) DVD burning program?
    thanks
    John B

    a quick followup:
went out and bought toast. tried to encode video DVD from mpeg-4 files, which seems to go okay, then when it goes to burn the DVD it gives me something about a "sense error" , says 'sorry, the dvd couldn't be created" and then that's it. I'm using Verbatim AZO DVD-R's which used to work for me okay.  Hmmm---maybe bad batch??
I have a stock dvd burner in my Mac Pro
other relevant stuff (or not) OS: 10.9.3, Ram: 10 gig, HD space: 4 TB, video card sapphine HD7950 3 gig VRAM
well, that's it...I'm stumped for right now....any help appreciated

  • What is the advantage of exporting mpeg-dvd vs mpeg for dvd if mpeg does not need to transcode audio

What is the advantage of exporting mpeg-dvd vs mpeg for dvd if mpeg does not need to transcode audio and also burns to dvd?

The MPEG2-DVD preset also produces a DVD spec-legal file.  If you use the generic MPEG2 preset, you can too easily create an out-of-spec file that will have to be re-transcoded by En.

  • Default DVD Burner

I have just purchased and installed the CS3 versions of Premiere Pro and Encore. I have noticed that when I export a Premiere file for burning in Encore, the "wrong" burner is automatically selected in Encore. I say "wrong" because it is selecting a CD burner instead of my DVD burner. I cannot seem to find the setting for changing the default burner within Encore. Is is right in front of me or is it buried deep within the menu structure? TIA
    Dale

    To
Burn Error Proof DVDs (Well, close to error proof!)
Use the SLOWEST possible burn option your burner will allow in Encore, since it is much better to take a bit more time burning the disc than it is to burn "fast" and have a disc that won't play
Set the VIDEO portion of the transcoding options to a Maximum of 7,000 so your burned disc will have a better chance at playing in desktop players (which support burned discs, if at all, only as an "after thought" of the DVD specification)
Use AC3 or PCM audio transcode settings for best player compatibility (some discussion of MPEG audio not being supported by all players, especially for NTSC discs)
Buy and use Taiyo Yuden (or Verbatim?) brand blank discs

  • Creating a new library from a DVD Burn library

I have my entire library of photos on my iMac in iPhoto 6.0.6. I recently spent quite a bit of time cleaning up what had been a rather messy, unorganized, photo library. My organizational method consisted of consolidating old film rolls which were inherited from original imports that were in different folders by moving groups of photos into single "film rolls" for older years and making fewer rolls for the last few years. I then went back through and corrected photo dates for a bunch of images that were scanned in, etc. I downloaded Keyword Manager, which I like a lot, and applied keywords to every photo in my collection. I also deleted a bunch of old photos which were too similar to better shots or simply not worth keeping. Once I finished all of this I had my new library consisting of 1892 pictures, which I hoped to backup and allow to serve as a "gold master copy" of all of my photos to date. In browsing the database in Finder, I noted that there were a lot of images in the "Original" folders that were not in the library. Some of these were images I had deleted in the library. (I know better than to do anything through the finder other than browse. I know that to maintain integrity of the library it is necessary to only perform actions through iPhoto.) I did a database rebuild and asked iPhoto to recover orphaned files which did nothing. I really wanted this database to be in pristine condition since I was using it as my master copy, but could not figure out how to do away with old unwanted images in the "originals" folders. I went ahead and created a DVD library with "Share -> Burn", and voila, the new iPhoto Library that was created on the DVD appeared to be "clean" with only the 1892 pictures in my viewable library existing in the Originals folder. OK, so far so good. I then took the DVD I had burned and attempted to replicate my library on my iBook which had a clean install of iLife '06 on it. When I launched iPhoto with the DVD in place it showed me an empty hard drive library and the burned library from the DVD. At first I attempted to just copy individual Film Rolls from the DVD to the local library. While this worked in bring the images over, the keywords became all jumbled. The resulting photos would have keywords attached which did not belong to them and were different from what was on the DVD. I then deleted the iBook library and tried copying the entire iPhoto Library folder from the DVD to the iBook via the Finder. When I relaunched iPhoto, presto all the photos were in my local library with keywords, film rolls and other metadata intact. However in browsing the library I came across a few photos which would cause iPhoto to crash when I tried to edit them. This was a consistent behavior on specific images. Reading through the forums I came across the color profile bug and through testing verified that this was not the problem. Meanwhile back on the iMac I could edit the photos in question with no problem. I verified that the image had not been corrupted during the DVD burn as well. The files are identical between the iMac and the iBook. I know this is a long drawn out post, but if anybody has read this far, here are my questions ...
    1) What is the best way to go about creating a "clean" database with internal integrity after a doing a lot of edits and metadata changes? Shouldn't the burn to DVD do what I want?
    2) How come when I copied subsets of my library over to a new machine from the DVD, the keywords seemed to get all jumbled? Is it a matter of indexing them? If I added all the keywords to an empty library before copying the images over, would it work? Is there not a way to just copy portions of a DVD library into another library?
    3) Any ideas on the crash while attempting to edit problem? The image will load as a thumbnail, and then briefly flas the full size image, before iPhoto crashes and pops up a dialog asking if I want to restart it.
    Thanks for staying with me!

  • Problems ripping with an external DVD Burner

    Hello Everyone,
Recently I purchased a Liteon External DVD Burner off of newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827106011) -- It's a Liteon SHW-1635SX -- I bought this because the DVD-ROM drive thats in my tower natively is REALLY slow and I wanted to get a new one that I could use with a laptop that I`m going to purchase in the future. Whenever I try to rip a CD into iTunes using the burner, It says that it's ripping the disk, however it doesn't spin up the cd and it takes about 2 seconds to "rip" all the songs. I know this drive is soposed to be faster than my old one, But two seconds is a little TOO fast. Plus, I know that it's not copying the songs because when I try to listen to them in my library, the song won't play. (Under time it says "789:54..." for all the songs on the cd, in my library) However, the burner rips perfectly in Windows Media Player... Is this perhaps some kind of glitch with iTunes??? Basicly, the only way I can rip a CD into iTunes is to use my old DVDROM drive, but that defeats the purpose... below is the CD Diagnostic log that I got from iTunes::::::::
