DVD burned from a disk image won't work on different computers???

Under the directions for how to burn a DVD from an disk image, the Apple Help document (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006) says this:
"Note: When burning a disc from a disk image, the burned disc will have the same format as the disk image. If you need a disc that will work on different computers, burn the disc in the Finder."
Does this mean that the DVDs that I am burning from the disk image won't be able to be played on a PC? a Mac other than mine? Neither? WHAT? I am planning to sell the DVDs of a workshop I present -- to people who may be playing them on PCs. Should I not be using this method (burning from a disk image) to burn my DVDs?

Video DVDs are in the UDF format. The disk image you created is in the UDF format. When you use Disk Utility to burn the disk image to writable media, the new discs will be in UDF format and all will be well.
You are doing things correctly.
BTW, unless you have an external burner with lots of cooling, if you expect to use the burner in your Mac (which DOESN'T have lots of cooling), it's a good idea to pause between discs to allow the burner to cool down. (BTW, this comment is based on the reported results of several people in the forum. If you don't allow the cool down timer, you will start to create 'bad' discs. Also it is VERY important that you reduce the burn speed in Disk Utility to 4x or lower in order to create discs with maximum compatability with players. (You should see a way to change the speed in Disk Utility afterr you have inserted a disc.)

  • DVD burned from a PC mounts as blank CDR

A client of ours has received (on a few occasions) simple photo images burned to a DVD that when they arrive, they mount on the Mac as a blank CDR, asks if you want to "Open it in the Finder" to burn to it, etc... I have allowed the Finder to mount the "blank" media (mounts with the CDR icon), and even tried burning to it to see if it was actually blank, but would get "too much data to burn" errors when trying to burn a 52k Word doc, so it certainly seems as if there is data on them, and you can see the burned area on the DVD itself (about half full).
Since this has happened a few times to them, and it is reproducible on all machines when it does, it seems it has something to do with the way the PC user is burning them or with the media itself (dual layer maybe?), and simply wanted to know if there was anyone here that knows what the problem might be, or at least have a hint. On a Mac, as you are all aware, it's as simply as dragging stuff to the DVD icon and burning... so I'm not sure what issues on a PC could cause this (or what burning program, burn setting, format, etc...). Mounts as a blank CDR, even though there is data on it, and the printing on the media itself states it is a DVD.
Thank you very much for any info!

  • Burning From  a Disc Image Problems??

I recently purchased iDVD 5. The best feature in the new iDVD for me is the ability to save my projects to disc image which lets me keep just the disc image on my hard drives with a file size of roughly 3-4 GB. This saves me a TON of space as I was having to save all of the self contained movie files along with the DVD projects in order to burn more copies for my clients in the future.
My concern is that burning these extra copies of my projects for my clients with disk utility is not as "solid" a way to create DVDs as it would be to simply burn all the copies I may need directly from iDVD.
    Is this true?
Also, I have never been able to verify any disk that I burned from a disk image using disk utility. These disks play fine on my new Sony DVD player, but I have had some complaints from clients that the disks skip and don't play perfectly.
What could be causing this problem?
If I can play these disks on my home DVD player even though my computer can't verify the burn, should I be concerned?
Is the inability to verify a problem with my burner?
    Pete

    Len,
Others have had the verify "problem." I NEVER verify.
Really? Then I don't need to verify? My burning process goes to this automatically, I think. How do I stop it?
BTW, I did install Tiger, no problem, installed FCE and made a very short movie, only one transition, no added audio, but burned with iDVD just great! It takes some adjusting, but I am getting the hang of it, and it hasn't been too hard to learn yet
I think I will use iMovie--> for my photos/videos to DVD projects for a while, but when I get to mostly videos and all digital photos, I think I will go back to FCE (or whenever I have lots of time to be REALLY creative)
PS. I'm SURE you ARE younger than I am! I'm like Old Toad...we're older than dirt!

  • Will Disk Utility Burn a DL Disk Image to DVD?

Will Disk Utility burn a DL Disk Image created by iDVD to a DL DVD? I'd like to save myself the rendering time to find out that it won't, if that is the case.

    JCC,
The last I knew there could be a problem with setting the proper break point when creating/working from the disk image of a double layer disc, but I may have missed something recent.

  • CDs, DVDs, disk images won't appear in Sidebar or on Desktop

    Hello,
Brand new iMac 2.16, right out of the box.
CDs, DVDs, and Disk Images won't appear on the desktop or in the Sidebar. Nothing is shown over the horizontal gray line at the top of the sidebar, no Macintosh HD, Servers, etc. Disk Images are fully functional, ie Disk Utility recognizes and mounts them just fine.
I checked Mac Help and followed its instructions:
    (1) In Finder preferences:Pane:General, all 'Show These Items on the Desktop' boxes are checked.
    (2) In Finder preferences:Pane:Sidebar, I checked all boxes under "Show These Items in the Sidebar. BUT these changes are NOT retained. After I close the Preferences, the Sidebar does not change. If I re-open the Sidebar preferences, the relevant boxes are now unchecked, as if I'd never done a thing.
Restarting was the only way to fix the problem. Thereafter, the upper items in the Sidebar (Macintosh HD, external drives, iPod, CDs) sometimes SPONTANEOUSLY disappear. They still show up on the desktop, but tweaking the Sidebar preferences is again ineffective. Restarting is the only solution.
    Thank you for your help,
    Andy

Hi Andy, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
1] Everything elmac says is helpful and correct.
2] An upgrade to 10.4.8 with the 10.4.8 Combo from blue apple / Mac OS Updates might fix your hiccup. If you don't want .8 then .7 combo.
3] [OT] For some minor security issues, it is better to surf the internet in a standard account. If you are surfing in an admin account then here is how to switch and maintain prefs.
Set up a new account in System Preferences / Accounts / +
and make it have admin priviledges. Be sure to remember short name and password since you will be asked to "authenticate" when running in your standard account. This new account is often called "test" in these forums.
Once that is done convert your regular account to standard.

  • Disk images won't unmount/eject for admin user, DVDs & iDisk also affected

This problem started when I was on Tiger, and seemed to follow me onto Leopard.
It only affects me, the primary user on my Mac. *One other user on the computer; she also has admin level access and does not have any of these problems.*
    Here's the deal:
*Once mounted, disk images won't eject/unmount.*
    - Dragging to the trash can doesn't work. The eject icon appears, but nothing happens.
    - Ctrl-click does not show Eject as an option when highlighting the mounted image.
    - CMD-E doesn't work
    - EJect doesn't appear as an option in the finder menu
    - Clicking on the Eject button in the sidebar of the Finder window doesn't work.
    - I've logged out, rebooted, repaired permission, and installed a new OS (clean install of 10.5, then did the import of my old user settings. Since I had the problem in Tiger, it's clear the problem followed me, but what the heck causes it?)
*The only way to unmount/eject a disk image is to use the Disk Utility Program.*
*DVDs also can only be ejected via Disk Utility*
The iDisk connection can only be killed by opening Activity Monitor and killing the webdavfs_agent process.
Would love some help. I've searched a lot and have a fair amount of folks with this problem, but no real solution.

That'll work; however, then the OP has to reset all of his preferences. Easier would be to log into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Mount the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving these kinds of conflicts is a laborious process, but not as laborious as resetting preferences or even remembering what you set weeks, months, or years ago.

  • Firefox won't insall into my applications folder. Says can't install because libsmime3.dylib is in use. I am running Mac Os 10.6.7 on a Macbook Pro. I can run firefox okay from the disk image but just won't install into the apps folder.

My system is a Macbook Pro running Mac Os 10.6.7 with a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 ram. The upgrade downloads fine, but when I try to drag the firefox image onto my appication folder, I get a dialogue box that says...Cannot install application because "libsmime3.dylib" is in use. I can run Firefox fine from the disk image.

Nope---didn't work. I've owned Macs for about 12 years so although I am brain dead on some things, I do have a working knowledge on most things. I only say that to say this--I did try holding down the mouse and choosing empty trash. It asks if I want to permanently delete what's in there. I say yes--and then I get the same identical message again-----'The operation can't be completed because the item "Firefox 8.0.1.dmg" is in use I can then click stop, or continue.' So apparently that complains the same way it does if I click it up on the menu :)))
As for item owned by---that's not an issue and isn't coming up. User is not a problem either as I am the only user on this system. There is only ONE file in my trash at the moment at that is this dmg file. Nothing Mac. Nothing owned by anyone other than Firefox. The problem seems to be that the dmg file and the original 4.0 FF file are working in tandem with each other--even though I have already drug the new 8.0 globe into the Apps folder and it updated the FF app with the new stuff. If I could force the dmg file to go away, I would do so, but at every turn the system is telling me it can't be done because it seems to think that dmg file is in use---even though everything is shut down and/or ejected. Hey--I'm getting ready to head out and won't be back till evening. I'll check back in this evening. Thank you again for your help.

  • Can OSX 10.4.3 Be Installed From A Disk Image ?

I am getting OSX 10.4.3 on a DVD.
If I decide to install it on my old G3 iMac instead of my eMac can I use a disk image.
The iMac only has a CD burner so I thought I could make the disk image on my eMac and transfer it to the iMac for installation.
    Will this work OK?
    Ian.

You can't boot from a disk image. Put the DVD in the eMac and boot it in Target Disk Mode (hold down T while booting). Connect the iMac with a FireWire cable (if it doesn't have FireWire it can't run Tiger) and boot it with the Option held down. Select the DVD and click the right arrow on the screen.

  • Installing OS from a disk image

    Hi,
I have quite a few systems that I need to rebuild. I've burned disk images of all the apps we need, onto a FW800 drive which has really sped things up. One thing I can't figure out though, is how to install the OS from a disk image. Each of these systems are getting a fresh hard drive with no OS installed. Booting off the install DVD works fine with fresh drives, but how does one boot into a FW800 drive with a disk image of the install DVD?
I thought cmd-opt-shift-delete was the key stroke for this, but it doesn't work for these systems, can anyone help out?
These systems are a combination of Leopard and Snow Leopard and are all Mac Pro's from the 2006-2007 to the early 2009 models.
    Thanks
    Stuart

Cool, thanks, I was kind of thinking along those lines, but couldn't quite put my finger on it/figure it out, that makes sense, appreciate it.
    Thanks again for quick reply,

  • Pulling video from a disk image?

is there anyway to pull video from a disk image or would i have to burn to DVD then rip the video back to my computer? if so, does anyone know of any good ripping software?

    Hi Kyle,
no, a disk image is an image of a disk (what have I said right now???), meaning, as the content of a physical dvd, you're not able to change any content on that "virtual" disk... (maybe some mpg voodoo masters can, me not)
as you said: burn dvd, and.... (I love to write that):
get for 20$ the Apple mpeg2 plugin
and for free the tool Streamclip
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6010.shtml
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6018.shtml
best practise anyhow, is to go back to iM project! you're loosing quality with ripping dvds, they use a socalled lossy compressor.... so, in any case you have the project, a backup, some Quicktime-dv copy of it.....?

  • Disk Image Won't Mount - Reason: Device Not Recognized

As I've searched the discussion forums, I've seen plenty of postings for "Disk Image Won't Mount" and for "Device Not Recognized" but not the way I'm seeing it on my laptop.
After a backup and restore, my mac will no longer mount any... and I mean any images. I have downloaded several security or software updates from different vendors and each .dmg file will not mount. I still have the .dmg files in hopes that after I get this problem solved, I'll be able to install them, but...
It always gives the same reason for not mounting and I'm at a loss on what to do next. I've run Software Update hoping it will be a quick fix, but have had no success.
    Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem. Using FireWire disk mode, I put a disk image of my entire iBook onto my iMac as a back-up. (For an unrelated problem, Apple told me I needed to erase my iBook completely and do a clean install of the system.) Well, I screwed something up. I don't know what exactly--maybe I didn't "put away" the device correctly, but the next day when I flipped on my iMac, the disk image of my iBook was just gone, and not to be found anywhere. I finally succeeded in restoring the image using TechTool, which scanned the entire volume of the iMac for directory information. And it's all there, because the img file is more than 10GB. But when I double-click on it, I get the following error msg: "The following disk images failed to mount...reason--not recognized." I've checked the app it's supposed to open with, permissions, and run Disk Utility volume repair. No dice. Any ideas??? Did I mention that this is EVERYTHING I had on my iBook???

  • Boot from local disk image ?

    Hi there,
I would like to now if it's possible to install snow leopard on my macbook air from a local disk image (.iso)
    as anyone done it ?
    Cheers,
    Antoine

You cannot start up your computer from a disk image without cloning, burning, or restoring the image to an internal drive, external FireWire drive, or optical disks first, as disk images are not usable until the necessary drivers are loaded, and the drivers aren't loaded until Mac OS X has started up.

  • Reliability of restoring from a disk image vs from a "normal" backup file

How would you rate the reliability of restoring your data from a disk image file (a sparseimage file, in this case/question) versus from a 'normal' file, e.g. one created by the Backup 3 app?
I read a few discussions here that mention corrupted disk image files...that result in a total loss of data...as opposed to other types of backup files, in which individual files, or folders, could be corruputed.
For some context: my ultimate goal is (a) to create reliable backup files, e.g. in folders in my Home Folder, stored on an external disk drive, and (b) to secure that data.
Thanks to Niel, in a prior discussion, I discovered that I could create a sparseimage file on the Lacie (encrypted).
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=763337&tstart=0
I could then select that secured file as the target / destination for the backup file/s I'm creating with the Backup 3 app. When I log out, that file is locked tight.
But is this 'elegant' solution for backing up data "reliable" when I'll need it at 3am on that dark day when...?
    Many thanks.

    BU3; sparse image;
    MBP 15" Core 2 Duo | LaCie d2 250GB ext   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I keep both images of my boot volume which is just OS and apps, and of my home directory. But I also have full regular backups as well. It is not "either or" but a matter of having backup sets that will work. And rotating those sets.
A daily backup, weekly, and monthly. That could require 3 or even 7 or more. Or partitions. But definitely more than one disk drive.
One disk drive backup set should always be safely off line when making a backup set.
Just as I have a clone of the system, an emergency boot drive, and one backup of the last OS revision.
You have to change sparseimage to dmg if you hope to use Apple Disk Utility Restore, especially if you are working from DVD and not from a hard drive.
I've used DU restore and SuperDuper and never seen or suffered a problem or corruption. But I zero drives before use.

  • Disk Images won't create or mount after 10.4.9

Since installing 10.4.9, my old disk images of CD's would not mount and I cannot create new images that mount. I get a unknown (bad) filesystem error.

Now with 10.4.9 update, be sure you have tried everything from the "Disk image you are opening may be damaged" article you had above!
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305111
    Look again at the "Solution"
    1. Make a new image in Disk Utility and copy the original files to the new image.
    2. Discard the original, affected image.
    3. As a precaution, open (mount) the new image, open Disk Utility, and repair the new image. Continue to repair until no issues are found.
Go to Disk "Utility" and select "New Image" then "New Folder" and copy original file to the new image (item #1) then discard the old (item #2) and repair new image (item #3)
