DVD burned in tiger won't play on panther

Hi,
I have an iMac G5 with Tiger (10.4.2) in it. I just burned a DVD there and it plays fine on that computer and on my home DVD player.
However the DVD won't mount on my Flat Panel iMac G4 w/SuperDrive running Panther (10.3.9).
I have the latest software updates on both computers.
Has anyone come across this problem? Any solutions?
What other compatibility problems do I expect with this DVD?
I used to use the G4 for making DVDs that played on the G4 iMac, the G3 iBook, and other PCs. Will this DVD now work on all those other computers or is it only compatible with Macs running Tiger or worse yet, only G5 computers?

uh, chase, I think you're in the wrong forum.

  • DVD burned from img won't play in other players

In order to back up an old DVD I had to protect it from damage, I ripped it with handbrake and encoded it as a diskimage via iDVD. As the movie was 1.5 hours in length I used the professional setting under project info. After approximately 12 hours of encoding the disk image finished. I can open the disk image with DVD player on the mac and it performs perfectly. I used the disk utility to burn the disk image to a Memorex DVD+R without incident. This morning I tried the burned DVD in my xbox360 which read it as a mixed media disk and would not play it. Next I tried in my sony blu ray player which read it as a photo disk with no photos on the XMB.
What do I need to do to have the burned DVD work properly? Are the DVD+Rs bad or is it something with the encoding? Thanks in advance for your help. I am a pretty big novice to iDVD and the whole process.

To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder (the DVD) and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

That Photoshop Elements 9.0.3 Update has generally been discouraged by the Photoshop Elements gurus. But, I am not going to factor that into this at this point.
This is what I would ask you to look at in the Elements Organizer 9 accessed from the Photoshop Elements 9 or Premiere Elements 9.
    a. Create your slideshow in the Elements Organizer 9/Create/Slideshow/Slideshow Editor. Then use the Output option of Edit with Premiere Elements.
From your description, you are probably using the Output Option of Burn to Disc DVD which will take your slideshow directly in the Disc Menu section of Premiere Elements 9. The preferred transfer of the Elements Organizer 9 slideshow to Premiere Elements 9 Editor is by the non wmv route "Edit with Premiere Elements" not the wmv route of Burn to Disc DVD.
Let us explore if any of the above is involved in your issue and then we will decide what next if necessary.
    Thanks.

  • Burned DVD on iDVD. Won't play on DVD player

I burned a slide show on iDVD and when I put the disk in my DVD player or back in my computer it won't play.

    Hi
My thoughts on this - this occures to me when
    • Using Cheap brands of DVD e.g. Memorex and NoName are bad choice for Video-DVDs (might work as Data-DVDs)
    I use Verbatim (only)
    • DVD type used - I use now DVD-R as they also play on older DVD-players - NEVER +/-RW as they are known problem makers
    • BURN SPEED - I now set down burn speed to x2 or x4 = Less burn errors = Plays on Mac that made the burn and so on PCs - Works so much better

  • After burning DVD, menus work on DVD player but assets won't play

When I click on the "play movie" button the dvd freezes and won't play. But it works just fine in the simulator. Please help ASAP

You realize there's almost nothing we can do for you, don't you? Authoring a DVD is not trivial and we were not watching to know what you did or did not do in what can be a tricky set of procedures.
You can start by telling us what your source media is, how you built your menus, the level of complexity of your project, how many other DVDs you've successfully completed. Stuff like that.

  • MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 won't play *some* DVDs now (mysteriously!).

Quite mysteriously, my Mac is refusing to play some of my DVDs.
The DVDs aren't scratched or unplayable. I tested them this weekend on someone else's multi-regional player.
These DVDs most certainly did play before on this laptop (a late-2003 Titanium Powerbook--details below) but now just do not! Won't read at all. The DVD never mounts on the desktop. Sputtering. Eventually get spit out.
The two DVDs that my Mac now refuses to play are GRAHAM NORTON FOR YOUR PLEASURE [Region 2] and TABOO THE MUSICAL [Region 2 or maybe Region 0].
I can't imagine what's happened/happening. These played fine as recently as March 2007. I've done nothing to my firmware since that time (on purpose, at least!).
I just got the new BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE DVD [Region 2] and it plays just fine. It also plays all Regions (limits reset by Region X).
Any idea at all why my drive refuses to read/play certain DVDs?
Your help &/or theories are appreciated!
    Thanks.

    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-816 (Firmware Revision: XXJ3)

It started the same way on my PowerBook G4 15" aluminum with the same optical drive (my laptop is from Sept 2003). After reading some DVD/CD and some not (even didn't recognize them in Finder), once, when I tried to write something on DVD-R (or+R - I don't remember) it didn't do the task - neither with Toast Titanium 9.0.4, nor with Dragon Burn 5.0.5, nor with Disk Utility...!?
One of Geniuses in one Apple store told me my optical drive is about to "die" and I shoul replace it. Well, the estimated cost of replacement was close to $450.
I decided not to do it within Apple.
I ordered new optical drive "*+Apple SuperDrive 8x DVD Burner Drive - Aluminum or iBook G4+*" (MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-875S - Reads DVD:Yes; CD-Write:-R, -RW; DVD-Write:-R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW; Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO) from POWERBOOK MEDIC.COM for $99 + shipping. I replaced it myself for about 2 hours. Replacement by professional shouldn't be more than cost of the part.
Now, I have a new powerful and fast optical drive working as a dream.
    I wish you lack.

  • DVDs made in iDVD won't play on same computer

Why is it that every DVD I make in iDVD burns fine but will not play on the computer?
They play fine on DVD players but not on the iMac that made them.
On the iMac it just says the disc is blank, but it is not and plays fine on a DVD player.

Thanks for the help. I looked into all these possible issues:
The drive itself works fine. Tested about 15 "homemade" discs and they all played normally.
I don't think it's the DVD brand. The at-fault dvds are Panasonic but my other Panasonic-burned dvds work okay. And they're all DVD-Rs.
I have 30g of hard disk space.
I checked the burn speed and it is set at the default ("Maximum Possible"). I've used this setting on my other DVDs which play fine, but maybe it could be the culprit?
The only other issue I could figure out is that the DVDs that won't play all have the same iDVD menu template. Perhaps there is a glitch with that menu?

  • DVDs made in iDVD won't play on a Mac

I've made a fair share of dvds from DVDSP and iDVD (version 7.0.4) but a few days ago I tried playing one that was created in iDVD on my computer (in the same drive that burned it) and it wouldn't recognize the disc. I tried several other dvds and they're spit back out too (all of them play fine on a standard dvd player). At this point, none of the dvds I've made from iDVD will play on my computer, while the dvds made from DVDSP seem to play just fine.
It seems odd that a dvd won't play on the very same drive that burned it. Does Apple do this intentionally? I need to copy one of the discs, but that won't happen until the computer recognizes it. Is there a workaround?

  • ITunes Burns but CDs won't play - why?

Using Leopard, I burn a playlist in iTunes to CD. CD finishes and song tracks are visible, but CDs won't play either in CD player or computer. Why? This just started a few weeks ago. Have burned successfully many times before. Have "Audio CD" selected in preferences, etc. Can anyone help? Thanks a million.

I'm having the same trouble. Used to burn just fine until a little while ago. Now, it just hangs up iTunes in an eternal burn cycle. I try to force quit again & again & again but iTunes just sits there, with the blank disc whirring and spinning inside my machine. Cannot force quit so I have to restart just to quit iTunes. When the CD shows up on desktop (and in iTunes) after restart it looks like a normal, properly burned CD, complete with song titles. But when I play it, it's just erratic digital noise.

  • Burned itunes CD won't play on external players!!

I recently purchased music from itunes, created a playlist, then burned onto a CD. It will play back in the itunes player and it even shows the tracks, but won't play on any other CD players or even on my windows media player( player 10 napster)! When I tried to play on another player all it showed was #1 and then went to #15 with the time of 68 min. which is what I burned but no sound available. I did do sound check before burning. Can anyone help me? Thanks Reddox2
      Windows XP Pro

How did you burn the disk, as a data disk or as an audio CD (check your Burning preferences in iTunes)? If you burned the disk as a data disk, that's essentially just a backup and will only play in iTunes. You have to burn the disk as an audio CD to play it in any other player.
    Hope this helps.

  • DVD created with Encore won't play on Mac

    Hey,
I recently created a DVD with Encore. Everything went perfect, the DVD played flawless on a standalone player and with Power DVD and Windows Media Player on a Windows PC.
But now a client reported, that the DVD does not play on a MAC using Apple's DVD player.
We rechecked it and the same error occured.
The Popup says that the Copy protection of the dvd could not be veryfied.
I burned it using a regular DVD Burner, so there can not be any copy protection, right?
What can I do, so my future DVDs will play everywhere?
    regards,
    Can

    >can not be any copy protection, right?
That is correct, you may not burn a DVD with copy protection

What brand of blank disc, and what burn speed?
Some people "scoff" at the idea, but others here advise to use one of a few brands of blank disc... and to burn at the slowest possible speed setting so the "laser holes" made during the burn process are well shaped
What I always do is create an ISO out of Encore and then use the FREE http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download to write files or folders or ISO to disc for DVD or BluRay (send the author a PayPal donation if you like his program)

  • DVD on new iMac won't play

I'm trying to play a commercially made DVD on my new iMac with Mt. Lion.  The preferences are set to play automatically when a DVD is inserted.  The title page shows up, but it won't play.  When I click the play button, the 'stop' button flashes momentarily, then shows the 'play' button again.  I've tried to play it using menu commands, the space bar and hitting the play button.  Each time the play triangle symbol flashes to the parallel lines, but goes right back to the play triangle.  This is a new imac.  I've not tried to play a DVD on it before.  ANyone have any ideas?

Since you list your operating system as 10.7.4, I would guess that this is NOT a "New" iMac.  10.8 has been the installed OS on new systems for quite some time.  Also the new iMacs releaased last month do not contain an optical disc device.  If you need a DVD player (or recorder) you will have to buy an external SuperDrive (or other similar device).
Next thing when trying to play a DVD for the first time, there is normally a DVD Region selection window that opens.  There are several regions in the world and the US and some other countries use region 1.  You need to have admin privlieges to make the change.  ALSO REMEMBER that there are only a total of five changes you can make to the region setting.  Once you make the fifth change, and that number includes the first region you select, you are stuck with remaining on the fifth change you made.
Now if the region had been changed by someone previously and you are already on the fifth change and the region selected for the fifth change does not match your DVD;s region, well you are out of luck.
You may want to check on the region setting info here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2397
Note that the region code setting is hardware based and will not be changed by even a complete erase of the hard drive and reinstalling an OS.
Another thing to keep in mind is that recent updates to the OS will sometimes give "funny" results when you are using an external monitor (or projector).  Copyright/Digital RightManagment will sometimes prevent display with anything plugged in to the Thunderbolt or MiniDisplay Port.

  • CDs burned using iTunes won't play in CD Players!!?!!

    Hey Folks,
The first song or two will play or have bad sound quality, but after that the cd freezes up and won't play anymore. This happens with the cd player in both of my cars and on my home stereo. I use a lite-on 52X and I can't figure out what's going on with it. Has anyone else experienced this or has a solution for it.
    Thanks.

I am having the same problem, but have no answer as to the cure.

  • Burn dvd's from mac won't play on DVD player

I'm getting an error 'can't read disk' from my samsung bd-p2550 when trying to play a moving i created on my Mac Mini. I've created the movie using iPhoto to create a slide show movie. i renamed the resulting file from M4V to MP4 and burned to a DVD-R disk. inserted into the samsung dvd player and got the error message, even though the samsung is supposed to support mp4.
next i downloaded FLV Crunch and converted the MP4 to VOB(mpeg 2) format. burnt to another disk, same error.
i did some google searching and they talk about VIDEO_TS directories (which i see on my store bought movie dvd's). is there some directory structre that makes movies playable on a DVD player connected to a TV?
i can play the dvd's on my Mac Mini from the internal DVD drive, so that seems to indicate the file structure is ok.
    Any other thoughts?
    thanks!

Why use mp4 if it to be played on a DVD Player?
Save the project as a DV mov file and burn the DVD again in the usual DVD format of mpeg2.

  • DVD's burned in OZ won't play in the US

I have burned multiple DVDs in both PAL and NTSC format and they all play on my multi system TV at home (in Australia) however they don't seem to work for relatives I have sent them to in the States. I have sent them to multiple people as well and they all complain that it plays for a little while (about 5 mins) and then stops, sometimes complaining of a scratched DVD, other times with no message at all. I have given the same DVDs in PAL format to people in Australia and none of them have had any problems.
My initial reaction was that it must be a region code thing, however a quick search has found that iDVD doesn't even have the ability to burn DVDs with a region code.

Is it possible that it is a problem with the type of DVD I am using? DVD-R vs. DVD+R? Or anything like that? I am really stuck and feel that I have tried everything!?!?
