DVD burner and DVD Studio Pro

Are the Mac Pros and the other intel macs have better compatibility with authoring DVDs than the G4s? I'm on my dual 867 mhz G4, and when I encode using compressor with the default setting, and build it in DVD Studio Pro, the dvd plays fine on my sony player but not on some other DVD players like JVC. My friends JVC recorer is new, they just got it a month ago, and it says it plays DVD/R discs. I produced a 7 minute short, and even with the short film, it still has problems playing on some dvd players.

I've cleaned it using disc cleaner and I've also burned the video_ts files to my sony DVD burner (my sony DVD burner is only 3 months old) besides the burner in my Mac and I'm still having playback issues on some DVD players? I've also tested them without dvd lables on verbatim discs. So no one else is having any problems authoring their DVDs on the Mac Pros or the other intel based macs?

  • Macbook pro dock - with ext hd and ext dvd burner and cooling fans needed??

why doesn't anybody make these? I could have a 1 terabyte HD, dvd burner and cooling fans to keep the macbook pro cool enough to touch while playing wow, or editing video. It could also be made of aluminum and look great. Oh and it has to be configurable to allow use of any 15" macbook pro(ie, bookends units are different because new models include firewire 800)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have iStatPro? You can download it from the Apple site and see what it is that is running so hot. Under the low usage you describe, the fans should be idling silently. And you might be able to tell what is getting so hot.
If Activity Monitor doesn't show anything, then you might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It sounds like something is getting very hot. If there is a hardware problem, then you should get one or more error codes. The Apple Hardware Test is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that came with your Mac--you boot to it by holding down "D". Instructions are on the disc and on the screen.
Also, be sure you have "All Processes" selected on the Activity Monitor. And the boxes at the bottom should be mostly black with very little red or green at 3.5% CPU usage. Given all the symptoms, I am surprised that there is not some process running amok in the background.
    Good luck!

  • I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie to MPEG -4 Video both worked well on my iMac but will not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD RW and DVD-RW.  Any suggestions?

I burned an edited movie to disc using H.264 codec and a second movie using MPEG-4 Video.  Both played well on my iMac but would not play on my Sony DVD Recorder/Player which accepts both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs.  I have tried other 'codecs' DV-PAL; DVCPRO-PAL; DVCPRO50-PAL; AIC; and finally share to iDVD.  iDVD works on both my iMac and DVD Recorder but the picture is very poor with major shimmering which is unwatchable.  Can anyone assist? The other codecs I used either do not pay on my video recorder or fail when I play them back on my iMac.  I am at a loss as to what I can do.  I am from the UK so using PAL is essential.

If the source video is interlaced, you may have problems using iMovie. It de-interlaces everything on output which can cause picture to look strange.  Final Cut Pro X supports interlaced video, but it costs a lot more.
Standard DVD Players don't support H.264 or MPEG4.  You might want to look at this article on transferring HD video to DVD.  I wrote this article mainly for Final Cut Pro, but many of the same principles apply.

Hi there, I have been experiencing this problem on and off with various media types (originally I had issues burning to any disc - cd or dvd- I upgraded to Snow leopard, and the problem was fixed).
Now i'm having issues READING home-burned DVD-R's, DVD-RW's ( I avoid using DVD+R's). Commercial dvd's load fine. I can burn to blank DVD fine. I have cleaned the internal DVD drive with a VCD cleaner, and tried resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964).
I use an LG dvd recorder at home. The discs I use are SONY DVD-R and DVD-RW. These play without error on the LG dvd player.
However when I try to load the burned discs into the mac, the drive makes a whirring sound and spits out the discs within 10 secs. These are new discs with no scratches etc. I have tried setting the CD&DVD system prefs differently (opening the dvd in disk utility, finder etc) to no avail. I tried both finalizing the discs and un-finalizing them on the DVD player.
This is driving me nuts as I am a film student and need to access my burned dvds!
note: I recently had my computer serviced in the last 6months as the hard-drive failed (I live in Christchurch, NZ and the computer was damaged in the Sept 2010 quake). The comp was relatively undamaged in the more recent Feb 22nd 2011 quake, but because of the shaking, could there have been substantial damage to the internal disc drive in this case??
any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers

Not sure what else may be the cause of the issue; but if there's
a chance of other hardware damage after an earthquake, it
may be wise to have someone check over the computer.
{I've asked this post be moved to the Intel-based iMac forum, yet the issue
is likely a generic one not limited to a build model vintage of computer. My
    name's avatar is of the representative PowerPC iMac G4, of this forum area.}
For general disc burning, I use a small free-ware utility that makes it clear
what I may be getting; of course it makes quick work and the other methods
function correctly on my Macs... see http://burn-osx.sourceforge.net/ and use
it with the setting for it to make discs that will work in Mac + PC. Worth a look.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Dvd burner and application

    afternoon
where can i tell on my macbook if i have a dvd burner, and if i do, what application would i use to burn dvd's. does the macbook come with anything pre installed?
    says i have
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
when i look in about this mac
    many thanks in advance
    Tracy

You can look at system profiler to see what you have.
Or just go to the apple icon on the menu, then about this mac then click the system information button.
Based on what you posted you have a DVD burner.
Also 10.5.x can burn DVD data disc by default. There are many ways to go about this here is one:
Highlight the folder you want copied. In finder go File > then there will be an option towards the bottom to burn those folders.
You can also set up a burn folder so you can drag files to there then click burn. Or set up a folder with a predetermined size (CD/DVD) and drag things there. Or use Disc Utilities.

  • Dvd Burner And Floppy Settings

    HI,
I AM SETTING UP A NEW RIG  ON K8N NE04 PLATINUM, WITH 2 SATA HD`S.
DVD BURNER AND FLOPPY WOULD BE CONNECTED TO IDE SLOTS. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU : CAN I SET THE DVD BURNER AS PRIMARY MASTER AND FLOPPY AS PRIMARY SLAVE IN THE BIOS ? OR SHOULD THEY BE SLAVES?
    THANKS

You won't be able to put them on the same IDE controller nor master/slave them because you've to place the Floppy drive to the Floppy Controller instead of the IDE controller!

  • BluRay Burner and DVD Burner will access the disk and then disappear and then access the disk again constantly.

Hi, I have a Dell system maxed out.  I have both a DVD Burner and a BluRay Burner drive in the system.  I just had to replace the fan on the CPU as the plastic that would hold it onto the mother board broke.  I have a 120GB SSD as my main
and a 600GB 10,000 RPM drive as my secondary drive.  Because I did not realize the Fan was the problem keeping the system from booting up all the way. Which never had any problems before I had to put the system into storage when I retired from the Air
Force last year.  So any ways I rebuilt the system back with Windows 7 Ultimate.  Everything was working fine.  So I started installing all my other programs.  Over the next several days I did not notice any problems.  Until I went
to play one of my games that requires a Disk to be in the drive to verify it was a OEM disk.  When I went to play I noticed the game kept asking for the disk even though the disk was already in the drive.  Went to my System display and noticed that
the disk would show up for a few seconds and then disappear and then the drive would access the disk again and then disappear.  This keeps happening in both my drives.  I have read though the forums and this is not anything to do with the disk drive
disappearing that I see all over the forums.  Also, when I start the computer up from the DVD or BluRay drive it starts up with no problems.  So it is not anything to do with the hardware. I believe this is something to do with some software I may
have installed or something, but I don't believe it is hardware.  Now I see that it has duplicated my Two optical media drives.  If I can't get someone to help me fix this, I may have to go through the process and re-install the system and my other
software to see if that fixes the problem.  Like I said I have never had this problem before.
Thanks in advance if anyone has any ideas.

If the paste wasn't changed it will lead to heating problems, something that will show in different ways all the time, but thsi isn't the issue here.
Could it bee that you accidentally moved the cables to the drive on the motherboard when you changed the fan? Make sure it's correctly connected in both ends.
It could also be that the drivers for the SATA-controller needs to be updated, try and download the latest ones from the manufacturers webpage.

  • Dvd burning and ripping

Dose anyone know where one could find a dvd copying program like the windows based dvd decripter, and dvd shrink. it would be great if anyone knows of any.

Yes, there is one program in particular that will decrypt and encode any DVD called HandBrake. Here is the link: http://handbrake.m0k.org/?page_id=24. There is also an Instant HandBrake that will encode DVDs specifically for the iPod 5th gen. and the PSP. You can find that on the Beta page. Hope this helps.

  • HD DVD Burners and DVD Players

Someone recently told me that to have HD Quality video using an HD digital camera such as the HDR-FX1, i need an HD DVD burner, and an HD DVD player. Is this true? Or can I just use my LaCie DVD burner and my Sony DVD player and still get HD quality?

It is unknown at this time what will play in HD DVD players when they arrive. Sony, Apple, HP and other are supporting BluRay(tm) and H.264 as their selected format, Intel, Microsoft, Toshiba and others another encoding technology, some sort of Window Media stuff.
Yes, HD does take 4 times as many bits, and more than that for up to 24 channels of audio; but compression technology continues to improve. WRT H.264, I don't know what it's maximum bit rate is and I've not seen definitive articles on compression artifacts and other concerns on HD material. When HD DVD arrives, many of us will want to see substantial improvements over the best DVD has to offer; I'd really like 1080p rather than interlaced, for example. Bluray certainly has the technical specs to provide the data storage for that. But we'll have to wait and see who wins the technology battles.
    Ed.
PS: there was a news article today which said the Chinese are even going to invent their OWN HD DVD standards for a third competing method of creating DVDs. Something about wanting to avoid licensing fees in the Chinese market.

  • DVD+R and DVD-R 101: An Explanation for Beginners

I found this information and believe that it could be of help to other beginners like me. I Googled: DVD-R vs DVD+R ?
There are other sites, but here is one which explains step-by-step. Titled:
*DVD+R and DVD-R 101: An Explanation for Beginners*
    Here:http://netforbeginners.about.com/cs/multimedia/a/DVD_explained.htm
    ~L

I only use DVD+R (using iMovie 06 and iDVD 09).
I have found DVD+R to be more reliable than DVD-R. The only disadvantage to DVD+R is that DVD players manufacture before 2003 may not play them.
DVD-R is not as good as DVD+R for three reasons: inferior error correction, inferior ‘wobble’ tracking, and the fact its data writing methods look like an un-needed halfway point between CD-R and DVD+R.
For a DVD burner to track where it is on the disc, it uses three things: the ‘wobble’ of the data track (where it actually wobbles back and forth instead of in a straight line) to tell where it is in the track, the position of the track to tell where it is on the disc, and some additional information on the disc to tell where the track begins and ends.
On DVD-R, they tried to solve the problem with something called ‘pre-pits’ where spikes in the amplitude of the wobble appear due to pits fully out of phase with the rest of the track (ie, between two spirals of the track, where there is no data). This can be viewed as a simple improvement over CD-R as it makes it easier to track the wobble.
On a DVD+R, however, they came up with a much better method. Instead of changing the frequency of the wobble, or causing amplitude spikes in the wobble, they use complete phase changes. Where CD-R’s and DVD-R’s methods make you choose between either easy wobble tracking or easy ATIP reading, DVD+R’s method makes it very easy to track the wobble, and also very easy to encode data into the wobble.
Now, the third item on the list: how DVD+R discs burn better. The ATIP/pre-pit/ADIP stores information about optimum power control settings. This information is basically formulas stating how much output power is needed, what the laser startup power should be, and other pieces of information you require to properly burn a DVD.
In addition to the optimum power control profiles, DVD+R also gives four times more scratch space for the drive to calibrate the laser on; more space can only improve the calibration quality. So, in short, DVD+R media exists to simply produce better burns and protect your Movie.
