DVD burner for iMac - OS9.2

I have been looking all over the Internet, and local computer stores trying to find an external DVD burner the will work with my iMac, 350Mhz, Power PC with OS 9.2. I can't find one anywhere. all of the new ones are for OS X. My model iMac does not have firewall
Can anyone give me a way to find one?

I doubt that you will have any luck. Your iMac has USB 1 which will make DVD burning extremely slow. Since your iMac has a G3 processor, making video DVDs will be agonizingly slow and you will have to use Toast or some other 3rd party tool to do it. You should be able to use one to make data DVDs but it will be slow.

You mean Firewire not firewall.

I've installed a Pioneer DVR-112BK (BK just stands for black) in my 1GHz imac. should be fine for your model. It's very quiet with quick and reliable burn speeds. the Pioneer DVR-112DBK is the same drive but cheaper because it can't write to DVD RAM disks, only read them, so see if that's something you want.
the drive itself is a bit shorter than the supplied OEM but will still fit when you take the front casing off (necessary for any model of drive).
can't provide huge amounts of info for retail in the US but but OWC computing (http://macsales.com/) have a good customer service rep and specialize in Macs.
    hope that helps.
NB - make sure you research the process of opening the dome before you do. it's tricky (see links).

  • What is the best external cd/dvd burner for imac?

My iMac internal cd/dvd reader died on me. I'm looking for a best external solutionb for this problem. Any solution?

    I may suggest OWC, http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/
This is a case to put your own optical drive into. I have this case and I am impressed with it.
I also have a Pioneer Blu-Ray 12x in the case for doing Blu-Ray Authouring. I got my drive for about $99CDN.
Also, I watch Blu-ray movies on it with Mac Blu-Ray player.
    Does this help?

There are plenty of options but I have found that the LaCie d2 http://blu-ray.burnworld.com/burners/lacie-d2.htm works more consistantly. I use Toast 11 mainly for Blu-Ray. The drive does come with a basic verison of the software which is good for most but you need to upgrade to do some serious authoring.

You will find internal optical drivers from OWC here. You will find external DVD burners from OWC here.
For the external drives, almost any Firewire burner will be supported by your PowerBook. Here are a few. You can further refine the filters.
    Good luck.

  • Is there a dvd burner that comes with macs? if not whats a good dvd burner for mac os x?

This may help, but it's an accessory with an extra cost:

This new Superdrive also supports DVD-Audio so you can load more music into it than a CD.

  • Possible to install HD-DVD Burner in iMac G4?

Hi, I was wondering if it is at all possible to install HD-DVD burner in a iMac G4? Anyone tried this?

I know that Toast Titanium 8 for Mac supports Blu-Ray burning (Apple's loyalties are in the Blu-Ray not the HD DVD camp) but the G4 is not a processor I'd ever want to be encoding HD in. The G4 wouldn't even be up to playing discs. So I think you could do it with a Blu-Ray drive but you shouldn't do it. I hate having to wait whilst an SD DVD encodes HD is at least four times longer. Remember Apple hasn't put a HD spec burner in even it's 8-core Mac Pro yet!

  • Rate SONY 820 UL/T DVD burner for burning iMovies-what's better?

I have an iMac G5 with internal CD burner, but not DVD burner. I do have the iDVD and iMovie software--so I installed this external driver to burn iMovie projects and after hours of messing around with my blessed iMac G5 and mystified SONY support techs finally learned it won't burn iMovie or Quicktime movies with Mac software bundle it comes with (Roxio Toast Lite 6..) Should I send back driver and get something else, or stick with it and upgrade to Toast 7? I am frustrated since the Sony/Mac software bundle leads you to believe you CAN burn your videos.

    Hello Artcart,
the main difference between iDVD and Toast is, that iDVD is primarily an authoring software (it authors the structure of the DVD with possibility of multiple menus, movies/slideshows) while Toast is a disc burning app ( with the possibility of encoding movies for DVD).
If you look through the iDVD discussion board you'll find that most users adopt the "divide and conquer" method:
    1. Author the DVD in iDVD because it gives you more choices for menus etc.
    2. Create a disk image (a file that behaves like a DVD, but is stored on your HDD)
    3. Burn the image file to DVD with Toast (more reliable for burning)
I should be able to select/drag my (NTSC formatted) iMovie project into Toast and the SONY drive will indeed burn a nice DVD for me?
Absolutely. Toast does the encoding, but offers you only a very simple menu (start-up screen). if that is sufficient for you, you can do without iDVD.
To add this: I've been using an external LaCie burner for the last 2 years to create DVDs for a living, and have had a very low failure rate .... no worries
I am not sure what "menu" selection you mean--the "play" title menues offered in iDVD?
    Yep.
    hope this helps

  • External DVD burner for G4

    Hi,
I was wondering if there are any external dvd burners for a G4 with a USB port that is under 2.0. Also, it's a 400 firewire. Thanks in advance.

    Hi
If you're Mac profile is accurate, you will have problems with any new drive: OS9.1 will not natively support any new drive, and will not allow you to burn DVD's at all without third party software, such as Toast 5.2.3 (last version that can burn to DVD-/+R (no DL media), and run in OS9)
All USB2.0 drives are backwards compatable w/USB1.01, BUT USB1.01 will not support DVD burns, as it cannot run faster than 4X CD-R (way too slow to burn a DVD (1X DVD = 9X CD)).
You will want to go with a FireWire-based drive, if you go external, as WWJD pointed out.

  • What is the best DVD burner for Mac OS Lion

I've recently bought a new iMac Lion desktop and was very disappointed to find out that I can't download DVD burning software. Is iSkysoft an okay software to use and is it better than iMovie.
I have also lost recent imports from my camcorder to iMovie because it shuts down!! I can't believe the new iMac SHUTS down unexpectedly!!!! I thought only PCs would do that!!! I am really annoyed.
Any ideas on how to find that hour of video on my computer?
    thanks
    J

Obviously you are having an issue with iMovie. I would recommend you begin trouble shooting that issue before looking for replacment software. There is an iMovie forum you can post to, also if you have purchased AppleCare or the machine is less than 90 days old you have AppleCare coverage and a possible solution is only a phone call away.

  • Best dvd burner for Mac mini

What brand of DVD burner is most compatible with the Mac Mini? I haven't found one that specifically lists Mac OS in the specifications information.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Many brands are compatible, including Pioneer for example, but for the Mac mini, I'd start with http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/mac-mini/superdrive/ for internal and http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/optical-drives/ for externals. Of the latter, http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/MRBFWU2D112/ would be my own choice for DVD burner at reasonable price.
This supplier specializes in Mac peripherals, and these devices will certainly work. There are other suppliers and other brands of course, but the above is a good place to start.

  • Best External dvd burner for dual layer disks?

    Hi everyone,
At some point my internal dvd burner in my mac book pro died, and apple replaced it. After that, I couldn't burn a dual layer disk. They've changed it twice more to accomodate me (the genius bar is awesome), but I still only have mediocre results. No problem burning regular dvds or cds. So I wondered is there a REALLy good external burner for DVD-DL that you have experience with? Thanks!

A good bootable multi-interface enclosure (empty) for an external CD/DVD drive will run about US$70.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRSFW8U2RF/
They also sell SATA drives pre-installed in that same enclosure.
Many users find installing an internal drive themselves no more difficult than doing a memory upgrade themselves.
Others prefer not to work inside their computer.
Based on your graphics card and the original drive, I expect your Mac Pro is an older model. All before 2009 accept an ATA INTERNAL drive such as this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/superdrive/Mac_Pro_Xeon
That page also has a video of how to install a replacement DVD drive.

Howdy! Welcome to the Apple Discussion Boards!
I have a good opinion of LaCie burners. I have had one for over two years now with nary a problem. I used it with a PB G4 12 inch model. It comes bundled with Toast Titanium, which is really good burning software, IMO.
As far as system specs, check out LaCie's website, but I think anything above 10.2 would be supported.

  • DVD Burner for an eMac

Hi I have an eMac 1 GHz PowerPC G4 with 640 MB SDRAM and running OSX 10.4.8. I purchased the machine with only a CD Burner over a year ago. Now I would like to have add an external DVD burner. What will work with my machine? I have tried searching Apples site and visited my local CompUSA. Neither has been very helpful. Thanks for your assistance.
    - Chris

I actually just purchased a brand new Pioneer 111D 16x DVD Superdrive from eBay for $60. (This is the drive Apple installed in the latest G5's).It was extremely easy to install and even came bundled with software to install Tiger (grey eMac only disc), World Book encyclopedia, and Quicken software.
Being that my eMac is refurbished and doesn't have Apple Care (I purchased a similar plan through my insurance company instead) I had to do the installation myself. All I had to do was connect the cables and the drive booted the next time I turned my computer on. I'm not sure I can post non-Apple affiliated links but try an eBay search for "superdrive" if you're interested in that option.
