DVD burner not burning at 8x -- Firmware download

Yes, i know there's another thread out there like this, but I'm gonna make another one so stupid apple will see how many customers are having this problem.
I have: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E
I've read on the other thread that TDK dvds will burn at 8x, but it doesnt for me, 1x-2x only! I have tried so many brands of dvd, wasting my money, testing to see what kind of dvd would burn at 8x. Why do I have to go to this much trouble?
I'm so tired of waiting 30 min to burn one disc, my friend finishes burning their dvds within 6 mins on their windows laptops. I'm so desperate to get this fixed that I'm thinking of downloading and installing this firmware that MAY fix this problem, however, if it doesnt work, it will kill my optical drive. This site says that this firmware is for the powerbook 12", but installing it will void the warranty. Since apple is CLEARLY NOT solving this problem, should I or should I not take this risk and solve it MYSELF? Has anyone tried to download firmwares for this problem and worked?

You cannot apply the PowerMac SuperDrive Update to the 845. The installer will tell you that this update is not compatible with this model Macintosh (as I understand it).
There is a lot of inconsistency with DVD media. More than I have seen in past decades with any other recordable material or format. Especially frustrating when the variables effect record-ability, working time, play back, can damage drives and leave one with unmountable back-ups.
If your goal is to find a way to burn faster with the hardware you have, you need to use the right media. Acquire some Apple DVD recordable discs, and use them. If you cannot get higher than 2x with this, it may tell you that something is malfunctioning. In which case you should call Apple or if you cannot, then try the forum again. Counter to that, Sony has been consistent for me with higher burn speeds. However I can only claim this with 8x Sony DVD-R which you may no longer find. I see only Sony 16X sold lately and some older drives deliver 2x with this. If you buy the Apple media from an Apple store, perhaps the sales person may have experience to confirm what you should expect with the media he is selling you for your machine. I might call more than one store or time until I got clear experience.
Many people have been frustrated with the lower burn speeds on various DVD media. Especially since the claims fall short of general expectations and the PC notebook burners seem not as finicky (as I understand it). This has been a thorn in the side for some time. It would be nice if the Apple techs involved in this aspect of design would release an explanation for there design decisions, but this is not necessary. The likelihood is that the answer would show some reasonable design decisions no matter if you or I would agree with the decisions. I choose to use Apple because the majority of their design decisions work for me far better than the other choices. For those areas which fall short, I have either lived with them or found a work around.
Computers will be a work in progress for many years to come, perhaps your lifetime. Developing this tool reaches into the end users domain for design help and quality control more so than any other technology I have witnessed. Thus you and I are more than mere consumers as with most consumables, we are for better or worse at one level or another a part of the design team. It is possible that the more mature the world gets about this, the more forth right all the players can be.
Respectfully,
Harmz

  • DVD is Not Burning in DVD Studio Pro

DVD is Not Burning in DVD Studio Pro 4.2.0

I used build and format approach. Both discs play fine on computer platforms, but not on a consumer DVD connected to the TV. Normally I have no problem. I checked and rechecked several times all the preferences for Studio Pro. The only thing I noticed was instead of generating a Video and Audio TS file, it generated one HVDVD_TS file. Is this the issue? If so,where do I correct this (in the settings)?
    Thanks

Try downloading and running the imgburn program.  Google it.  It is free and will burn CDs and DVDs.

  • DVD WILL NOT BURN IN IDVD

Trying to burn a project in IDVD, goes through the entire process up to "Writing Lead-In" and about 6 minutes left, the disk is ejected automatically. When put back in process gets hung up. Have also saved as a "Disk Image on my desktop and plays with no issues via the DVD software. When I select to burn to Disc, within 1 minute disk is ejected and this message comes up "The Disk can"t burn, because the device failed to calibrate the Laser Power for this Media". Is this a software or hardware issue? Or something else

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Delete iDVD pref file - *or rather start a new user/account* - log into this and re-try

I deleted every iDVD application and folder from my boot drive,
emptied the trash and then installed iDVD 08 using the customize option

If You do a re-install be sure to get rid of all iDVD old parts AND then EMPTY the Trash-basket !

  • DVD drive not burning double layer discs

I was burning a double layer DVD this morning, using Verbatim media, which I've never had any problems with. The drive I was using was a Pioneer DVR-A18M. All of a sudden, after I successfully burned one disc and inserted another DL disc, it refused to burn anymore. I forget the exact error message, but it was something along the lines of the media wasn't recognized, and this persisted for multiple discs that I tried.
Now, yesterday, a friend let me borrow a movie that had a crack in it and the disc came apart in my internal Pioneer drive - but it still worked after that. Odd thing was that the drive would still read and play movies, music, etc but it wouldn't burn anything, tho I don't know if it would burn things other than DL media because I didn't try.
Anyways, while the Pioneer drive - which I just bought after New Years - had been working well, I decided to replace it due to the fact that it wouldn't burn DL discs and a few other minor issues I'd been having with it. The one main issue was that if I left a disc in the drive for too long, I wouldn't be able to eject it or load any new applications. I'd have to reboot the computer to get the disc out, something I never had to do with the only Sony drive that came with my G5.
So, I replaced it with an LG GH22. Upon trying it out, it burned a single layer DVD-R, but will not burn a DL disc. The error message this new drive gives me is, from with Toast:
    Sense Key = Illegal Request
    Sense Code = 0x24
    Invalid Field in CDB
If it would help, I could put the Pioneer drive back in and see exactly what that error message was.
Oh, one last thing. I'd like to replace the E-IDE cable I have, as disc media is never able to reach its full burning speed potential. I'm guessing it's due to the old IDE cable, as my G5 is from 2005?
    Thanks!

Ok, I tried using Dragon Burn instead of Toast and it worked fine and the DL disc plays. I have to run out to MCAT class but when I get home, I'll mess around with it some more and try using Toast again, the old drive, etc.

  • DVD Drive Not Burning, Tried Cleaning - No Luck

    So,
Over the summer, my dvd/cd drive inside my 15inch Macbook died. Took it to Apple and they replaced it with no problem cause of my apple care. Months went by, I burned a couple CDs and such. But not DVDs. Last week, I tried burning a DVD and experienced a problem. I search all over google and these help boards and such to find solutions. Here is my log after the burn.

I tried that language changing fix, didn't work.
I purched a Memorex Cleaning Disc, still doesn't work.
My last two options are to go out and buy a different kind of disc, but I don't understand why I have to. Iv been using the same kind of blank DVDs for a year now. Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Doug

OH BTW, I burned in Disc Utility at 2x and it worked fine. But it took forever to do so I will not settle for burning at 2x lol.

  • DVD+R not burning

I bought some TDK DVD+R s and they did not burn on my iMac G4 (running 10.4.6) They were 16x if that means anything. Thanx

    Hello, Chris,
    Welcome to the discussions.
I bought some TDK DVD+R s and they did not burn on my iMac G4 (running 10.4.6) They were 16x if that means anything.
Most of us think that other brands are better, Verbatim is one of the best.
DVD-R disks will usually play on more DVD players.
16x may be a bit fast for best burning. Try 8x or less.
Also, instead of wasting DVDs trying to get a burn, create a disk image on your desktop by choosing to 'save as disk image.' This will start the disk-burning process, but will end up with a disk image that is an exact copy of your project. You can view it with DVD player to ensure that the DVD will burn correctly. You can then burn DVDs using Disk Utility. See this for more information: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/6.0/en/18.html

  • Pioneer Burner not burning

I posted this on another thread but maybe it needs it's own. I have been having a problem with a new pioneer DVR 112D. It worked well for a while but now I can only read CDs but not burn them. I have the latest firmware installed v 1.24, This drive is a replacement for one that died about 6 months ago. I have OS 10.4.11, the newest patch burn installed, repaired permissions, repaired disk from a start-up disk, tried to burn from toast, and itunes, and disk burn. I looked in the LaunchDaemons folder for the WD file but it was empty. I called Pioneer and while it is still under warrantee, I have to send it in and wait 4 weeks to get it back. Not good service in this day and age! Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Japmac,
Nice to hear from you again, you have helped me in the past. I does read CDs and DVDs fine. I downloaded a disk burning program from apple called Simplyburns just to see if it was a toast or iTunes problem. It did not work either but did give me a new error message. "The device failed to calibrate the laser power level for this media" I did just try to burn a DVD and it worked! So maybe only the CD burning it not working. Is there a cleaning method that will work?
I did call the place I purchased it from first (Best Buy), they were not helpful either. Worst comes to worst I will bring it to the store and ask for a manager, If they will not replace it I will leave it there in protest and buy a new one (maybe Sony) someplace else.
    Thanks,
    Mike

  • LaCie d2 Blu Ray Burner not burning in Encore Mac

So I've built a blu ray disk in Encore and all set to burn the Blu Ray disk. When I hit burn, the LaCie drive asks for a disk. When I put the disk in, it waits and waits and then spits it back out. The disk is blank, and is a writeable Blu Ray disk. I am able to create a disk image but not burn it to a blu ray using my mac. Any imput?
    Thanks,
    Casey

The preferred method for many of us is not to use Encore to burn. For Mac, use toast. (For PC, imgburn.)
I always suspect permissions issues and/or other software taking control.

  • URGENT INFO NEEDED  - DVD's not burning on macbook - 4 brands now tried

Hi. I've been trying to burn photos onto DVD's all week and I've now tried 4 different brands inc sony - my mac has a superdrive and is supposed to take -R, -RW, +R and +RW. I've tried all of these and they are either not being read/ ejected as not being blank when they are/ or burning a few, ejecting and then unreadable when you put them in again. I've heard thatthere are particular brands that will work, does anyone know what it is so I can get them.
    thanks

Exactly the same problem here. The worst thing is, before the firmware update it worked fine for me. A HUGE THUMBS DOWN to Apple, we people are having this problem for months now and still no fix. Is it so hard to check if your updates work before releasing them???
I have been a true customer to Apple for over 20 years but it seems like the quality of your products is just going down and down and down and down. Instead of bringing out all this new fancy stuff like MacBook Airs and iPhones, you should first try to make your current product line work properly. I bought the most expensive laptop on this planet and I can't even play or burn a freaking DVD!!! Thanks a lot, Apple.

  • Please help! why is the DVD burner not burning dual layer media in my G5?

I have tried, unsuccessully, to burn dual layer DVD's on my G5 using the latest iDVD software (iLife '08) but to no avail. I switch to dual layer in iDVD but invaribly, I always get a multiplexing error at the end of the burn. Any suggestions?
    Rick

Are there any plans to update OS 10.4.11 to include a firmware update for the DVD drive? Or has it already been changed in Leopard?
Depending on what model of Superdrive you have, there may be a firmware update from the manufacturer, just not from Apple. Updating to the latest firmware from the manufacturer often provides for better media compatibility, faster burn speeds, and sometimes even features that were disabled by Apple's version of the firmware.
DVD-R DL discs have one major drawback if you're using them to burn video DVDs - you have no control over where the layer break is placed. The first layer must always be filled completely before any data is written to the second layer. DVD+R DL does not have this limitation. You can place the layer break anywhere you like, just as long as the first layer is more full than the second.

  • Burning only ones and next DVD will not burn

I never had a problem, now I can burn only first DVD (70min). The next DVD it's normally should take not more than 20 min. The setting speed is "Best". After inserting the DVD it runs hours and nothing happens. I have to force the iDVD to quit. I am using Verbatim DVD-R
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The BEST way to make multiple copies is with a disk image. You create a disk image from iDVD (an option under FILE) and then use Apple's Disk Utility or Roxio's Toast Titanium to make as many discs as you want. Using the disk image approach, you can reduce the burn speed to 4x or lower (Disk Utility and Toast both offer this feature, iDVD 6 doesn't) which will make your burned discs more compatable with set top DVD players.

  • Dual Layer DVD's not burning with Disk Utility

I successfully created two dual layer DVD's with a disk image that I created in iDVD. Checked both of those disks in a DVD player and both work fine. Now trying to burn more copies with the same procedure, same disk image file, same media manufacturer and all are failing. Any ideas? I can still successfully burn short videos on regular DVD's from iDVD so my burner has not completely failed. I had created a disk image out of the material that I need on the dual layer DVD because it's about 2 hours of video and iDVD was ejecting the disk too early without burning.

Sounds like the burner may have failed. It can fail in a way that only larger items cannot burn. Take it to your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to have them check it out
