Do you mean you're trying to do a Time Machine backup to DVDs?  If so, no, that's not a supported destination for Time Machine.

  • DVD Burner not found

I have recently installed a new DVD burner on my PC however when I tried to burn a DVD from Premier Elements it states that the burner is not found.
I have however been able to burn a disc when using AVCHD as it finds the burner.
The drop down for the find burner location is alos blank and not letting me find the drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions as top what I can do to get the dvd recognised.

This is now the 4th old post (this time only 1 year old instead of 3 to 4 like the others) in which you are sharing the same generalized report on what worked for you with a burner recognition problem. In each of your other threads that I am finding, I am asking for the following same supplemental information from you, information which I feel is important to your shared content. So, I repeat
    endfates
What version of Premiere Elements are you working with and on what computer operating system is it running?
With what type of burner are you working where you had this burner not recognized issue - Blu-ray/DVD/CD or just DVD/CD?
What specific video codecs did you find it necessary to install beyond what was provided for by the program, QuickTime, Windows Media Player,
and the usual assortment of players?
Besides "burner not recognized", did you have any "media not present" issues as well?
This information would be important since there is a 4 year gap between since the last entry in this thread (2010) and your post in this thread
    tonight (2014).
    Thank you.

Again, I point out that there are negative as well as positive aspects to the try this and try that "codecs". That is why I feel the requested information is important to the serial generalized messages that you are posting one after the other tonight in 1 to 4 year old threads.

  • Iomega external hard drive either 'not found' by Time Machine or is now in 'read only' format

I don't know what's going on with my iomega external hard drive.  Sometimes the HD is recognised by the computer; other times it isn't; if it isn't I can restore to an earlier back up via Time Machine app; but it's like the disk isn't writable.
Ten days ago, I had trouble backing up my iMac using Time Machine.  After turning it off and restarting my external hard drive, it backed up successfully.
However, today I am trying to back up my files, and TM tells me it can't find the external hard drive.  Nothing has changed -- I have been out of town this past week -- but somehow my HD now seems to be in 'read only' format.  It does turn on, and I could restore my computer to an earlier back up.
"Mac OS X can't repair the disk.  You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk.  Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Annoyingly, despite my HD not showing in Finder or on my Desktop (as it usually does), when I simply turn it off I get that warning message "The disk was not ejected properly".
Have tried verifying and repairing using Disk Utility, to no avail.
Am prompted to reformat but I don't have a good understanding of what this means and how to do it.  I'm guessing this would wipe the disk clean and I'd have to create the initial back up image all over again -- I'm reluctant to do this since this HD is my only back up and if it all goes tits up I'll be up that famous creek without a paddle.
Thoughts, suggestions, input all welcome and deeply appreciated -- thank you!

It's possible a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app can fix it, but they're expensive (DiskWarrior is about $100), and there's no guarantee it can do it.

That will erase it.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #5.
It sounds very much like the disk is beginning to fail, although it's possible there's a bad port, cable, connection or power supply (if it has its own).
I'd suggest getting a new one, and using it for your Time Machine backups; once you have a good backup there, reformat the old one (and select Security Options to write zeros to the whole drive -- if that fails, you know the drive is toast).  Use it for secondary backups, per FAQ #27.   If it has failed, get a second new one for secondary backups.

  • Firewire issue--Backup drive not found w/Time Machine after imac sleeps

I've had a lot of problems with Time Machine on my G4 imac since starting to use it a month ago. I think I have isolated the problem:
Time Machine functions properly while the computer is in use, and it has no problem after a restart or shut down, but if the computer goes to sleep and then TM runs its hourly backup, I get an error that it cannot find the Backup Drive. Once this happens, TM will no longer work until I've deselected the drive in TM, unplugged it, plugged it in again, and reselected the drive as the backup Drive. Sometimes this requires a shut down or restart too.
    Here's what I've tried:
    1. connected the drive via USB--it operated without a problem
    2. unplugged all devices from the computer, shut down, waited, 20 mins, restrted, plugged the external drive back in via Firewire--the problem persists as described above.
    3. deleted the TimeMachine.plist file, restarted--problem persists.
I've read that the Firewire port can be reset with other procedures such as zapping the PRAM or updating the firmware. I've also read that new problems can arise after reseting the PRAM so I'm hesitant to do this. Can anyone shed some light on the PRAM option?
I cannot find where the firmware updates are located on the mac site. Could someone point me in the right direction? I've looked under downloads and after searching, came up with a long list, but nothing was labeled clearly. Each listing mentioned firmware in the header, but it seemed to always pertain to a certain issue (eg. superdrive, or installing appleworks). I could not tell what was the most recent firmware released for my machine, and I fear installing something retrograde that will create new problems.
If anyone has any thoughts on how to deal with the firewire problem, or if you think my issue with using a FW connected drive with Time Machine might be rooted with something else, please comment.
    Thanks!
    HM

  • Terabyte USB drive connected to airport extreme not found by time machine

I attached a USB self powered hub to my airport extreme and attached to it my printer and 1 terabyte external drive.
    The printer works fine.
Time machine cant find the 1 terabyte hard drive.
Please help. it has worked fine when I have directly connected it to my mac book.
Need step by step directions. Thanks in advance.

    1. Open AirPort Utility (Applications-->Utilities)
    2. Select your base station from the list on the left.
    3. Click Manual Setup
    4. Click the blue icon labeled "Disks" at the top of the utility screen.
    5. Make sure your disk shows up, click "File Sharing".
    6. Check "Enable File Sharing". Choose settings as desired. Restart base station.
Once the base station has restarted, from your Mac's Finder window:
    1. Select "Go" --> "Network"
    2. Your base station should show up under a "Shared" option.
    3. Double click it and your hard drive should show up now and be recognized by your mac.
    4. Open up Time Machine and "Choose Backup Disk". The wireless drive should now show up for you.
This is how I got it to work for me. Good luck!

  • Burner not Found?

Hmm. My internal burner has worked fine in past but today i get a "burner not found" error in all of my burning softwares. I clearly have one, but it is not recognized today. any ideas why?
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D:
    Firmware Revision: BC14
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 0 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW

Do you cut the power to your machine overnight (not just shut it down)? If this recurs, I'd try two things:
Reset the parameter ram 4 times in a row.
If that doesn't fix it, then check the battery.

  • Do not trust your Time Machine backups

I had a very unpleasant surprise yesterday : I found out the hard way that I could not trust my Time Machine backup...
Once booted in recvoery mode to select "Restore TimeMachine backup", the process starts and seem to happily finish a few hours later (surprisingly, it finished when actuall 3 hours of restoration are indicated). No error message, just a confident statement that backup is restored and the computer will reboot in 10 seconds.
Thing is, well, the computer wouldn't boot... I just got a black screen right after the Apple logo, no mouse pointer, just a plain black (backlighted) screen on my MacBook Pro.
I know my way in the system, I'm pretty technical, so I decided to not give up, after a few hours playing around with recovery boot, terminal sessions and log file reading, it appeared that a lot of files were missing, especially system files.
As an example : most content in /usr/share/shadbox, but also ll /System/Library/CoreServices/logind and other files.
After copying these files either from a very old Time Machine backup from end January or from another computer, I finally manage to boot the system.
Lots of applications ar not usable because of missing contents (AppStore, Disk Utility, etc, etc)...
This is totally unacceptable, I work in the computer storage industry, our customers would burn us down to the ground if they could not rely on their storage.
What's worse ? Looks like there is no way to check a backup. Apple provides a "Verify Backup" option in the Time Machine menu, but it is only valid for network backup, not local disks.
Thing is, I was happily looking at my backups every hours, running without errors, througout many many days, only to realize when I need it that it is corrupted.
What do people do when they need reliable backup, except for paying big buck to company who actually care ?

I don't know if both disks are working properly, and I would almost say that's not the point.
Let me explain : Time Machine backups were running without warning, to me, it means everything is fine. There should be some kind of regular verification, and a way to manually check that a given backup is valid.
I ran a disk utility Verify on the TM drive, it finished without issue.
Yes, the files were missing from the TimeMachine disk, for example, /usr/share/shadbox was complete if I looked at a backup from end january, but most files were missing looking at any after that. Same thing for /System/Library/CoreServices/logind
I did a complete restore because I installed a beta release of the OS, I'm a developer, but realizing that one key product I need was not working (VMware Fusion), I decided to roll back. Following that bad experience, I searched for a way to verify backup and was astonished to find out that there is no such thing, Apple provides a flawed software with no mean to very integrity of the backups, that's just very, very bad.
To be completely honest, I should mention that while installing beta software, a few file system inconsistencies were detected and fixed by the installer, maybe that is the cause, but in no condition should you have a system that works perfectly in one hand, and a corrupted backup on the other hand, especially if the used backup disk is healthy.

  • Windows 7 install stops at "CD/DVD driver not found"

When trying to install Windows 7 with boot camp, all goes well until it stops and gives me the "CD/DVD driver not found". I have a mid 2010 Mac Pro with a 500 GB SSD drive. I have burned a DVD at 1X from a iso file.
    Thanks

Can you verify the MD5/SHA1 of the DVD with the ISO using OS X 'openssl md5' or the M$ FCIV tool? The source of your ISO should be able to provide MD5/SHA1.
    OS X Example
    openssl md5 ~/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr
    MD5(/Users/MyName/Desktop/GRMCPRXVOL_EN_DVD.cdr)= 977f4f0f1400be91855789213e07b031
    Windows FCIV example
    D:\>C:\"Program Files (x86)"\FCIV\fciv
// File Checksum Integrity Verifier version 2.05.
    Usage:  fciv.exe [Commands] <Options>
    Commands: ( Default -add )
-add    <file | dir> : Compute hash and send to output (default screen).
                    dir options:
                    -r       : recursive.
                    -type    : ex: -type *.exe.
-exc file: list of directories that should not be computed.
-wp      : Without full path name. ( Default store full path)
-bp      : specify base path to remove from full path name
-list            : List entries in the database.
            -v               : Verify hashes.
                             : Option: -bp basepath.

    Options:
            -md5 | -sha1 | -both    : Specify hashtype, default md5.
-xml db                 : Specify database format and name.
To display the MD5 hash of a file, type fciv.exe filename

Im getting disc burner not found or burning software not found with iTunes 7.2 using Windows Vista x64
the x64 thing may be the key to this.
check your DVD/CD diagnostics. (in iTunes, go "help > run diagnostics" and select DVD/CD diagnostics.) do you see error 2380 showing up next to the CD or DVD drives in the diagnostics?
if so, try reinstalling the 64-bit version of the GEAR drivers that iTunes uses for importing and burning. the GEAR drivers are available from the following page. (note that there are two different versions of the 64-bit drivers, so be sure to get the version that matches your hardware):

  • "Disk Burner Not Found..." My turn -

Or, "When does the Help Reply 72 hour response start?"
First of all, thank you, and you know who you are, for the fix to the Burner Not Found issue. This little rant is simply to help others who will have the same problem as I.
I’m brand new to iPods and the like, and it was the Nano that got me hooked – very impressive. I also was very impressed with iTunes too.
After I imported all my CD’s I decided to burn backup some DVD’s – mostly ‘cause I could. And I was able to, well at least three of them. Then, admittedly for reasons I don’t recall, I did a firmware update for my DVD (and yes, I got the right one).
That’s when iTunes started to give me the “Disk Burner or Software Not Found” error. What seemed odd to me was that I could still Import a CD, in the Preferences - Advanced - Burning tab, the disk burner iTunes couldn’t find was listed. And, with other software, burning a disk worked just fine.
I did as many as you did, I removed iTunes (saving my music under a different name, and location), reinstalled iTunes with the same results.
Finally, I found you good people, and read the fix, well – part of the fix. I tried putting my burner in the first Asus grouping I found the in gcdoem.cfg – that didn’t work, so I did as someone else here did, I put it in every grouping I found that already had an Asus burner listed – which worked.
    So, thank you.
Oh, then the funny part. When I restarted iTunes, I got this message – “Could not find your preferred Disk Burner. Ok to use E: ASUS DRW-1608P (ATAE:) instead?”
Ah, my “preferred” burner? – that would be the only one I have…
    Phat
p.s. Could someone explain to me, why in the config file, almost every grouping of burners calls the same dll?
    Weird.

    Hey Phat
This seems to be the same problem I've got and exactly the same burner. But when I add the entries to gcdoem.cfg I still have the same problem. Could you show me exactly the entries you added just incase I've done it wrong.

nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.
