DVD burner not recognizing DVDs

I've had a mini for quite some time now, and recently in the past few weeks I've had a strange problem where it no longer recognizes burnable/burned DVDs. CDs work fine, retail DVDs on movies work fine, but I am unable to access any of the things I've burned myself.
I've tried 3 of the types of burnable DVDs, and have even dug up some of my old DVDs I burned myself on this computer and they all do not mount. I've checked the system info, and the drive is still being detected as a DVD burner, so I am at a complete loss as to what could be causing this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm having exactly the same problem as this.
The last discs that I burned would have been in October/November, and after that I noticed that the Mac would no longer recognise burned DVD's.
As I need to burn some more discs I've been testing in the past few days and can confirm:
1. Will not read from burned DVD-R
2. Will not recognize blank DVD-R
3. Will recognize blank DVD-RW, but will not burn to them
I'm now searching around to see if it's a hardware or a firmware problem.
The data on the drive from System Profiler is as follows:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835F:
Firmware Revision: GGND
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No
Any ideas anyone?
Thanks in advance.

  • DVD burner not recognized in Leopard by iDVD 7.0.1

Not exactly the same problem I found in my searches, so made a new topic.
Setup: G4 tower, dual Giga Design 1.8 GHZ, 1.5 MB RAM, Pioneer 109 burner.
System Profiler shows ability to burner everything including +r DL.
I had to use a 3rd party hack to get iMovie 7.1 installed. Leopard did not recognize my 1.8 processor as legitimate. It would recognize it if downgraded to 1.7 GHZ, but I chose not to do so. iMovie 7.1 (iLife 08) now launches and works, but I used iMovie HD to make this project.
    1. I have burned other DVDs in Leopard with this DVD burner successfully, including a usable (proven) backup of my Tiger and Leopard DVDs, both DL.
    2. I have over 100 GB space available on my Startup drive as well as 80 GB on another internal drive that is storing the iMovie project. The imovie project in question is 15 GB.
    3. After creating the project in iMovie HD, I exported ("shared") to iDVD 7.0.1, chose a built-in theme and started the burn process. All was going well, so I went to bed. G4 set never to sleep for this project.
    4. Next AM found that "error - .... disk not burned due to burner not recognized (error xxxxx). Didn't get the exact error number, but the iDVD project, when saved to Desktop was only 137 MB. The iMovie HD project is 15 GB, so iDVD should have created a project about 3 + GB.
    5. Have NOT tried Apple Hardware test. Doesn't make sense to do so when the burner works fine in Leopard for other projects.
Is this problem due to iDVD 7.0.1 failing to be compatible with my G4 configuration like iMovie 7.1? Got no warning when installing or launching iDVD from iLife 08.
Any suggestions? I hope I've given enough useful info.
Incidentally, I'm not in a corner, as I copied the iMovie Hd project to a fW drive, and then used iDVD 7.0.1 on my MB Core Duo to render and burn it. Just want to find out what the problem is with my G4.

I'll try that. It may work as it is not iDVD making the determination if the optical drive is "qualified" but DU. As I said in my original post, I have burned DVDs in this internal burner using Leopard and a Finder Burn Folder. It is only iDVD that is between me and success.
I did manage to get the iMovie HD project burned using iDVD 7 on my Intel iMac. I will try editing another iMovie HD project, exporting to iDVD7, and saving as a disk image to a FW drive. I will report back the results, but it may be a day or two before that happens.
I should also probably try the same routine that failed on the chance that it was just a fluke.

  • External DVD burner not recognized

    February 2014 Mac Pro
    Final Cut Pro X
A DVD burner and an LG BluRay burner.
I believe the reason why I can't seem to burn either type of disc anymore is because I have plugged them into different USB ports over the many days I've been using these devices. They work fine on other computers and were working fine on this one, but Final Cut Pro uses a "Create Disc" program that I believe gets confused by which disc drive is to be used.
Final Cut Pro X completes the transcoding and goes to burn the DVD or BluRay disc (depending on which I selected in the Share menu) but nothing happens anymore.
How do I flush the hardware cache (if there is one) and restart with these external devices. The Mac Pro only has 4 USB ports but I needed more so I swap out the cables from time to time as I sync iPhones or upload memory cards to iPhoto.

    Found my own problem.
I use a program from Jeppesen to download FlightCharts for my Garmin G1000 on my MacPro called JDM. It loads an app called JSUM that doesn't close or exit cleanly after using the software. This service utility interferes with the USB ports and prevents a whole host of devices from working properly. I had to use Activity Monitor to close JSUM service and then rebooted. (I also deleted the app)
    All was returned to normal!

They show up in system profiler but dvd icon will not come up on desktop. I threw out light scribe, disconnected the drives and still will not work. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • Dvd drive not recognizing dvds but recognizes all other disks

My dvd drive on my macbook will recognize cds both burned and retail. It will recognize mac formated (burned) dvds. But it will not recognize any other dvds. It burns in a non mac format (ie burning a linux ISO image). I was just watching a movie on here the other day with no problems.
    anyone have any thoughts?

    [Edit to above Post]
the DVD drive itself wasn't dead. It was a software based issue. Whether it was an OS issue or a installed software issue is undeterminted. I did a full backup and then reinstalled Mac OSX Lion and the issue was fixed. I do not know what software I installed unfortunetly.
    Hope this helps other people.

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

I have however been able to burn a disc when using AVCHD as it finds the burner.
The drop down for the find burner location is alos blank and not letting me find the drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions as top what I can do to get the dvd recognised.

This is now the 4th old post (this time only 1 year old instead of 3 to 4 like the others) in which you are sharing the same generalized report on what worked for you with a burner recognition problem. In each of your other threads that I am finding, I am asking for the following same supplemental information from you, information which I feel is important to your shared content. So, I repeat
    endfates
What version of Premiere Elements are you working with and on what computer operating system is it running?
With what type of burner are you working where you had this burner not recognized issue - Blu-ray/DVD/CD or just DVD/CD?
What specific video codecs did you find it necessary to install beyond what was provided for by the program, QuickTime, Windows Media Player,
and the usual assortment of players?
Besides "burner not recognized", did you have any "media not present" issues as well?
This information would be important since there is a 4 year gap between since the last entry in this thread (2010) and your post in this thread
    tonight (2014).
    Thank you.

Again, I point out that there are negative as well as positive aspects to the try this and try that "codecs". That is why I feel the requested information is important to the serial generalized messages that you are posting one after the other tonight in 1 to 4 year old threads.

  • Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized

I have a Pioneer sata dvd-rw not recognized problem.  I installed a new Pioneer dvd burner.  It is Sata.  It works fine, but every time I boot into Win xppro  sp3 I get the found new hardware, it lists the correct drive and has the error that it cannot be installed.  Just have to cancel that message, but yesterday I went to install a new copy of windows on another drive connected to the the pc, the windows cd booted up asked the usual questions and then started setup and message came up and said it could not continue, because there was no cd drive.  Once I quit laughing and pointing to the cd drive,   I figured I better find out if it came be fixed.  I also have a sata hard drive connected internally to the pc.  This works fine also.  If I boot to the sata drive the sata dvd burner is recognized and it is installed. Works fine.  Does anyone want to tackle this one?  I tried showing the windows cd where the  burner was and expained to it that it was inside the drive already, but it just won't listen.  The pc worked fine with the old ide drive.  Thanks in advance.

  • My dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark.

my dvd drive not recognized in device manager, getting the yellow explanation mark. Tried uninstallingdevice drive and scanning for new hardware. scanned for updates, etc. I getting no results. The laptop is a Pavilion DV5. Thanks

    Hi,
It could be that the drive has a Hardware issue, but try the following.
From the Start Menu, open All Programs, open Accessories, right click the Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.  In to the prompt type the following command and hit enter.
sfc /scannow                 ( note that there is a space between sfc and the / )
Let the process complete, then type exit and hit enter.
Next, open Device Manager, right click the DVD drive and select Uninstall.  When this has completed, restart the notebook and let Windows rediscover the device and check.

  • HT5639 after The Boot Camp for Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

after i made The Boot Camp Setup  for running Microsoft Windows 8? DVD Drive Not Recognized or Reading CD/DVD

    thanks for the response
    1. Yeah I thought that's a mandatory thing because i need to be able to control the brightness with my keyboard, updated graphics card, boot camp control panel, etc
    2. No there's no enable for this because Windows 8 recognizes it as a "disconnected device" and asks me to reconnect the dvd drive to the machine (which it obviously already is).
    3. Ive tried those before, also even editing the registry but it didnt work.
It's weird because it never happened before on Snow Leopard » Lion bootcamp driver updates. Just in Mountain Lion

  • Mac OS not recognizing DVD with Lightroom Active

Has anyone found that a DVD is not recognized by Mac OS when Lightroom is active? Once I load the DVD to export images, it's not in Finder or the desktop. I've checked my DVD preferences in Mac OS and tried "Ask me" or "Open another application (Lightroom)." The only workaround is to kill Lightroom, load the DVD, then reopen Lightroom. Does anyone have a fix for this?

    >Does your computer see a blank DVD when inserted with LR active
Yes... Mac Pro w/ Leopard 10.5.2.
Are you running any Western Digital software for external drives? I had a problem with it a version or so ago, and had to uninstall it to make blank media behave properly. Haven't messed with it since and haven't had any problems.

  • New FireWire DVD Burner Plugged In - DVD Player Wants To Change Region?!

I have just bought an external Freecom FW/USB 2.0 DVD Burner.
As part of my testing, I inserted a DVD-R video I had made and attempted to view it via DVD Player.
However, I got a warning window saying that as this was the first time I had played a DVD I would have to set the region.
This DVD is a home-movie and as such has no region.
Needless to say, the DVD plays perfectly when using the Superdrive.
If I did set the region would it only apply to the Freecom or would it be one of the 5 changes you are able to make to the Superdrive?
Is every DVD burner allowed 5 changes of region?
I have not attempted to change the region as normally I will not be using the Freecom to play DVDs . . . . . just burning and copying.
What exactly does changing the region affect? The DVD Burner, my iMac, DVD Player or what?

    Hi Ian,
most if not all computer DVD drives allow up to 5 changes of the region code with the 5th being the last and permanent one.
The region code itself is saved inside the drive itself and each drive is 'for it's own'.

As for your home video DVD you might wanna have a look here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVDregioncode#Circumvention

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • Previously burned DVD's not recognized

Since I upgraded to SL- I've started having problems with my Optical drive (I think).
Previously created older movies burned on DVD-Rs (G5 PPC) when inserted in my iMAC are not recognized as DVDs.
Instead I get a message that I've inserted a blank CD (not DVD) in the machine.
These movies used to play just fine on my iMAc and still do on stand-alone players.
My Mac further indicates that these are blank CDs -and can be re-burned (which should be impossible).
Also, if I insert an older DVD with a PAPER label, the optical drive spins down and stops dead.
    Non-paper label disks spin normally.
Am I looking at a failing optical player-- failed software, or both?
    any help appreciated.

"My Mac further indicates that these are blank CDs -and can be re-burned"
    You cannot "reburn" DVD -Rs.
"Also, if I insert an older DVD with a PAPER label"
As a precaution, never insert a DVD or CD that has a paper label. The drive heat can sometimes melt the glue leaving little pieces of paper inside the slot drive during ejections, burning, etc. Reason why I hate slot drives. Wish Apple bring back the tray drives.
If I were you, I would clean my drive "several" times w/a drive cleaner, repair permissions and restart the computer after each burning session.
If little pieces of paper are stuck inside the drive, you will have no alternative but to take your computer to a repair shop for removal & cleaning.

  • External Lacie DVD burner not being recognized

Maybe I'm doing things in the wrong order - I put a Sony DVD into the external burner and then click on the burn tab in DVD Studio Pro. But I get a message saying to put a burnable DVD into the optic drive. When I put the DVD into the internal drive, it's recognized. I never had a problem with the external burner. Am I doing something wrong?

I also have a Lacie burner and although they claim that one no longer needs to download their disc recording support with 10.4 or later, I had to install it because my system (10.5 at the time) wouldn't recognize it (if you recall, Mac OS did not recognize or support external burning in the old days, but is supposed to now - for whatever reason, it did not on mine without installing the Lacie software).
So, you might try first to see if your burner is listed in HD/Library/DiscRecording/Device Profiles. Mine has a file there: LaCie.drprofile from 2008. If you don't have a file there, try going to their support site and downloading the DiscRecording Support; it's an old file, but I've not had a problem with mine.
