DVD burning and playing

I burnt a DVD (4.42 GB) on my Mac, and it worked well on a PC!  I tried to read it on the MAC but it just kept going round and round and round.  I tried forced quitting but nothing happened.  I could not eject the disk.  I had to switch off with the on/off button.  When I restarted it was all rerpeated.  Relaunching the finder did not help either.
I re burnt the data to a second DVD and the same thing happened - the PC could read it the Mac seemed to go into a never ending loop?
What is causing this?

Try pressing the Eject key.

  • Macbook pro dock - with ext hd and ext dvd burner and cooling fans needed??

why doesn't anybody make these? I could have a 1 terabyte HD, dvd burner and cooling fans to keep the macbook pro cool enough to touch while playing wow, or editing video. It could also be made of aluminum and look great. Oh and it has to be configurable to allow use of any 15" macbook pro(ie, bookends units are different because new models include firewire 800)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Do you have iStatPro? You can download it from the Apple site and see what it is that is running so hot. Under the low usage you describe, the fans should be idling silently. And you might be able to tell what is getting so hot.
If Activity Monitor doesn't show anything, then you might want to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test. It sounds like something is getting very hot. If there is a hardware problem, then you should get one or more error codes. The Apple Hardware Test is on Install Disc #1 of the gray discs that came with your Mac--you boot to it by holding down "D". Instructions are on the disc and on the screen.
Also, be sure you have "All Processes" selected on the Activity Monitor. And the boxes at the bottom should be mostly black with very little red or green at 3.5% CPU usage. Given all the symptoms, I am surprised that there is not some process running amok in the background.
    Good luck!

  • Dvd burner and application

    afternoon
where can i tell on my macbook if i have a dvd burner, and if i do, what application would i use to burn dvd's. does the macbook come with anything pre installed?
    says i have
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
when i look in about this mac
    many thanks in advance
    Tracy

You can look at system profiler to see what you have.
Or just go to the apple icon on the menu, then about this mac then click the system information button.
Based on what you posted you have a DVD burner.
Also 10.5.x can burn DVD data disc by default. There are many ways to go about this here is one:
Highlight the folder you want copied. In finder go File > then there will be an option towards the bottom to burn those folders.
You can also set up a burn folder so you can drag files to there then click burn. Or set up a folder with a predetermined size (CD/DVD) and drag things there. Or use Disc Utilities.

  • Dvd Burner And Floppy Settings

    HI,
I AM SETTING UP A NEW RIG  ON K8N NE04 PLATINUM, WITH 2 SATA HD`S.
DVD BURNER AND FLOPPY WOULD BE CONNECTED TO IDE SLOTS. I WOULD LIKE TO ASK YOU : CAN I SET THE DVD BURNER AS PRIMARY MASTER AND FLOPPY AS PRIMARY SLAVE IN THE BIOS ? OR SHOULD THEY BE SLAVES?
    THANKS

You won't be able to put them on the same IDE controller nor master/slave them because you've to place the Floppy drive to the Floppy Controller instead of the IDE controller!

  • Best Export Settings for DVD burning and Computer viewing

    Hello,
I am trying to export a 1 hour video that I need to be compatible with standard DVD players as well as viewable on any computer.
Original footage was shot with a Canon 5d Mark ii in 24fps.
I have done all of my editing in Premiere Pro CS6. From there, I exported a high quality file to bring into Media Encoder (for trials of best output). My master file from Premiere was exported with the Preset MPEG2. The only thing I changed in the preset was VBR from 1 pass to 2 pass.. This gave me a 6.2 GB file.
I then brought that file into Media Encoder where I have tried the following presets:
    MPEG2-DVD - Match Source Attributes
    MPEG2-DVD - NTSC 23.976fps Widescreen High Quality
    MPEG2 - HDTV 720p 23.976 High Quality
MPEG2 - NTSC DV High Quality
These settings have encountered various issues.. some have significant banding, but most importantly, none of them will play on my DVD player when I burn them to a disc.
The discs I am using are Sony DVD-RW with a 4.7GB capacity.
Where am I going wrong here? From what I've read, the format needs to be MPEG2 to be viewed on DVD... Sorry if I sound ignorant! This stuff is tricky..

First off, don't export your timeline and then take the result to AME to re-encode, this is compressing your video twice and degrading quality (not to mention takes extra time and hard drive space). Always export direct from Premiere to Media Encoder. If you must use an "intermediate" file as part of your workflow, perhaps to archive a completed video that might later be exported to other formats, then use a lossless codec such as UT or Lagarith (free downloads).
For DVDs, you MUST use "MPEG-2 DVD". Other forms of MPEG-2 are not appropriate, as the official DVD specification requires that the MPEG-2 file has certain attributes. Not recommended to use "Match Source" for ANY export, just choose an appropriate setting as needed.
This should be correct for your application - MPEG-2 DVD > NTSC 23.976fps Widescreen High Quality
If you want to encode a DVD file over 1 hour in length, then you will need to adjust the encoding bitrate so the resulting file will fit the disc. Rule of thumb is 560/minutes = bitrate, but you might round down the result a bit to allow for menu overhead and such, depending.
Once you export the "MPEG-2 DVD" file, you can NOT simply burn that file to DVD media. That is only creating a DATA disc and it will not be playable in a DVD player (though a computer or PS3/PS4 may work since they can play most media files). To make a DVD that works in all DVD players (and meets the spec), it MUST be "authored" in a program like Adobe Encore. This compiles your content and menus and all that and then writes the result to the disc in certain way so that DVD players can read the disc. If you open any DVD on your computer, you will see a folder called "VIDEO_TS" and inside that there are .vob files and others. That is a proper DVD. And once you have a proper DVD, you can't simply copy the VIDEO_TS to another disc (as DATA), you must tell the burning software to create as a "VIDEO DVD" and not DATA, or it again won't be readable in a DVD player. Very picky spec, sorry.
When using AME to export MPEG-2 DVD, it will create two files, audio and video (.m2v and .wav), you will then Import both of those into Encore together. Note that you CAN import other formats into Encore, such as .avi but Encore will then transcode that to the correct MPEG-2 format anyway, so best that you take charge and create the right media in the first place in AME before you get to Encore.
EDIT: In AME, any time that your source is higher resolution than the destination, such as HD to DVD, you can check the "Max Render Quality" button in AME to provide the best downscale quality.
EDIT 2: I see you're using DVD-RW media. That is fine for experimenting, but for delivery to clients always use good quality DVD-R or DVD+R media. DVD-RW may not have the best compatibility with players and costs more anyways. DVDs are so cheap now that I just proof to DVD-R and toss the bad ones, up to you.

  • Can I burn and play an HD disk in a Mac?

I teach at an art school with about 100 MAC Pros; about half are 2 x 2X Dual-Core Xeons with 2 GB RAM. We have Pioneer DVR-112D DVD burners. We can't afford to buy 100 Blu-Ray burners; I hope we afford even one.
But our students want Hi-Def! They say it's sick, pimp, and dope. (Me too.)
I found some confusing comments about BD-5, burning an HD file onto a regular DVD disk with a regular red-laser burner. I realize you can't get nearly as much time on a regular DVD disk, and you can't play a regular DVD disk in a Blu-Ray player. But could we burn short projects (15 minutes) onto regular DVD disks in HD and play them back on our same Macs - in HD?
    Has anyone tried this?
I really, really want to know!

That is what you want to do, you are making red dye semi-HD DVD (not bells and whistles, just video streams and menus for the most part) so if you make an HD project in DVD SP then burn it to a red dye DVD-R/+R that is what you get, can burn straight from your computer and it will also play in HD DVD players (which will be vey rare shortly ) Some older macs may not play the disc properly nut it should work fine on the new ones

  • DVD burner and DVD Studio Pro

Are the Mac Pros and the other intel macs have better compatibility with authoring DVDs than the G4s? I'm on my dual 867 mhz G4, and when I encode using compressor with the default setting, and build it in DVD Studio Pro, the dvd plays fine on my sony player but not on some other DVD players like JVC. My friends JVC recorer is new, they just got it a month ago, and it says it plays DVD/R discs. I produced a 7 minute short, and even with the short film, it still has problems playing on some dvd players.

I've cleaned it using disc cleaner and I've also burned the video_ts files to my sony DVD burner (my sony DVD burner is only 3 months old) besides the burner in my Mac and I'm still having playback issues on some DVD players? I've also tested them without dvd lables on verbatim discs. So no one else is having any problems authoring their DVDs on the Mac Pros or the other intel based macs?

  • Sony DVD Burner and 350 mhz AGP not being recognised by iTunes

I managed to get a Sony DVD Burner for my friends Powermac g4 AGP, the sales assistant sais it would be comatible for macs....it installed fine and wa sable to read dvd's perfectly, when my friend went to burn a CD from iTunes it would not work as it seems the drive is not supported. I have tried finidng some drivers all over the sony website for it but to no avail. I don't suppose anyone has any experience with this brand of burner? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

As I recall, Sony's internal DVD burners are made by Lite-On, but as far as the G4 is concerned - the drive's firmware indicates a Sony product. A compatibilty problem for burning a disk occurs, when the CD/DVD drive is newer than the supporting profiles for Apple's Disk Burner software. Have you checked into "PatchBurn?" Other than that, your friend could purchase Roxio's "Toast," which has more user settings than Apple's software.

  • DVD burning and finder

when i set up to burn a dvd, i open two windows. one has the photos i wish to burn, one has the dvd. i drag files from one to the other just fine. but when i want to remove a file from the dvd list and i drag it to the trash that file/folder is deleted from the original too.
i asked this question previously and a response said click on the arrow at the bottom right of the finder. well, there was a circular arrow at the bottom right, but it would not click. nothing happened when i left/right click, nothing.
is that the correct arrow? what am i doing wrong?

    Hi
    Thanks for the links.
Re available space, I have 58.6 Gigs free out of a formatted 74.4 Gigs (eMac 80 Gig HD) Also I have 1 Gig RAM. (My eMac is the 1.25 GHZ, USB 2, Superdrive model)
I do have BUFE as per the second link - checked in Terminal. But any mention of "Buffer Underrun Error" has not been in any of the error messages.
I will try and note the 2 or 3 error messages when they occur.
I also did try burning without any other applications running.
All media has been brand new. I have found online at Staples some 4x DVD-R disks but I have yet to find any "in-store."
Interestingly, my SuperDrive, Pioneer 107D, reports itself as more capable than Apple supports - Apple only supporting DVD-R.
As far as data type, I burn a few AIFF CD's for music playback, some Data CD's for backup and storage and the odd DVD also for data storage and backup. The latest attempt to back up the approx 2.2 Gigs in my Documents Folder is when I encountered the burning issues.
Upon reflection, I have never had more than 4x available in the DVD burning process despite the advertised 8x specs. Anything beyond 4x has always been greyed out.
Do you know if there is a preference file associated with the actual burn settings?
    Cheers,
    Jeff

  • Adobe Elements catalog backup fails after 3 discs.  Message says something wrong with dvd writer.  I bought an external dvd burner and changed disc brands, still the same results.

Full backup of catalog stops after three discs.  I have changed disc brand and added a new external dvd burner but still get the same results.  What is wrong?

If you have the hard drive space, see if you can complete a back up to the hard drive instead. If that works successfully, it could be a buffer or caching issue with the burner. It could be running out of space because it is not clearing after each disk burn.

  • La Cie Internal DVD Burner and A Power Mac G4

    A stupid situation here.....
I just bought & installed the La Cie internal Lightscribe DVD burner to replace the Pioneer DVD burner which wore out. ( Installed into a Power Mac G4 - mirror drive door version.)
It works except it seems that the tray on the La Cie burner is about 1/8" larger than the opening on the Mac chassis. So - unless you leave the access panel of the G4 down and leave the housing of the bays faced out, the tray won't open.
Has anyone else had this issue???? I've tried installing in both bays w/out luck. La Cie claims it is compatible. (techically it is but it seems they forgot about the physical world here.)
Anyone know a good place to get a Pioneer drive?
several Macs   Mac OS X (10.4.6)
several Macs   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, skokiejoe, and welcome to the Discussions, neighbor!
You're not alone with this issue; lots of folks have asked the same question here.
There's a plate attached to the front of the tray which needs to be removed before it will fit properly. Remove the drive, open the drive tray manually by inserting a paperclip into the tiny hole on the face of the drive and pushing on it until the tray ejects part way. Turn the drive upside down, grasping it in both hands and unlatching the two clips on the bottom of the tray with your thumbs, popping the plate off. Save the plate for possible future use and reinstall the drive.

  • USB ports could not recognize DVD Burner and WD Portable disk

    Hello all,
This is my first question to ask here about X1 Carbon. I hope you could help. I was trying to install a software using the Lenovo slim dvd burner, but the usb ports of the laptop didn't recognize it. Also, I tired to install the software using my portable HDD (Western Digital A08 Elements), but the usb ports of the laptop didn't recognize it as well. I plugged a usb thumb driver into the usb ports; it did recognize it!!! But I really need my dvd burner to be detected. I will appreciate if you could suggest an appropriate solution to my problem.
    Thank you

  • Buying A New DVD Burner and putting It in This ...... ?

Could you put a new DVD Drive/ Burner in a 2000 G4 Powermac with 10.1.5 OS
864MB Ram 30Gb HD. It has only a CD-Rom in it now. The Processor speed is 466Mhz. So getting a new drive would help or would it not work ?
Also would this LACIE D2 Dvd+-RW double Layer drive Firewire work on this computer ? it says on the box MAC OS X 10.3.2 Or Higher.
I want to install Tiger On it, and its only the DVD install, and do not really want to order the CD Set Up disks, and it would be good to have a DVD player on it anyway. Thanks

    Sure.
16X DVD-/+ DVR-111 or ND-3540, under $40 online newegg.com & others...; in early G4's such as yours, you don't need to remove the drive tray faceplate, so it's a simple job. You can search the KB for customer installable parts, to get a pdf or video directions should you need them.

  • DVD Burner and Keyboard

I just ordered a Mac Pro with one optical superdrive. I wanted to know the possibility of putting my old DVD burner in the second bay. The door looks strange, so I wasn't sure if anyone had any luck installing a third-party burner in there.
Also, I currently have a microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse for my PC. Since I will be using Vista on this machine as well, what are the odds of using this keyboard for my mac pro also?
    Thanks,
    Toby

This does not sound good - to me, it sounds like the enumeration of your devices is corrupt in the registry - caused during the power failure.
If you can get to Microsoft System Restore, use it to go back to a few days  time before before the outage ocurred.
If that doesn't work, thenHP recovery is my suggestion.

Please post rather than send me a Message. It's good for the community and I might not be able to get back quickly. - Thank you.

  • New DVD burner and iMovie

How can I do to set an external DVD burner to work with iDVD (different from the internal-default that the computer original brought)

If you are using iDVD4, you can install a "Easter Egg" that allows you to save your DVD to a disc image rather than burning it directly to a DVD. Once you have the disc image you can use Toast or other disc burning tools to create a DVD using your external burner.
    Full instructions are here:

and you will find the files you need here:
