DVD Burning. avi. file

I have an avi. file. Can this be burnt straight to a DVD (using Disk Utility) to be played on my home DVD player or does it have to be converted to another file before burning please?

AVI is a video codec and you cannot use disk utility to put this onto a DVD disk as a stand alone playable movie, however there are a few things you can do. Some unbranded and branded DVD players now play loads of different format video files such as AVI and Divx does yours do this, you may have to only drag the avi file to a DVD disk and just copy it. I use leopard and i just drag the AVI file to iDvd and this works ok for me, you have a dual opp system so OSX will do this for you.

  • Burning AVI files to DVD

Can someone please recommend a freeware or open source program to burn AVI files to DVD?
Thanks in advance for any help!

    Credit BGreg for:
There are a number of ways to turn an avi into a DVD viewable on a normal DVD player. You need to convert, or render, the avi file to a DVD image and then burn it onto the DVD. Here are a few ways to do that:
Using included Apple iLife apps, you can import an avi file into iMovie, passing it on to iDVD for making the DVD, which includes menu's.
Commercial programs Popcorn 2 and Toast 7 from Roxio are good for converting different file types to DVD, and give you more options than the included Apple iLife programs.
You can use programs like MPEG streamclip, truly the video Swiss army knife for video stream conversion, and DVD imager to burn the image. Both are available through http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx
When you burn your DVD, using quality DVD's will maximize the chances that your DVD player will play them (I tend to use TDK when available on sale). Unless you have a pretty new external DVD player, you should probably stick with DVD-R or DVD+R disks. DVD-RW probably won't work in older DVD players. I've used both -R and +R's successfully.

  • Burning .avi files

I have an iBook G4 with a that will burn CDs and view DVDs. I've been burning .avi files onto regular CDs, but have a few .avi files that are too big for such discs. Can I burn them on the blank DVDs I see for sale alongside the blank CDs? Or do the discs come formatted in such a way that I can't use them that way, even though I don't want to burn DVD files?

Or you can use the terminal split command. Here are the instructions I COPIED from some other guy on it's site. I've tried it, it works and it's not complicated.
Say you just used forty two to rip a DVD to a 1.1GB AVI file and want to split it up so you can fit it on two CD's. Just fire up the terminal and run split. Here's what it would look like if you wanted to make it fill the first 700mb CD completely and then have a 400mb file for the second CD. % split -b 690m bigsupertroopers.avi supertroopers
The -b option is for bytes and the 690m tells split to break the files into no larger than 690mb files.
This will create two files called supertroopersaa and supertroopersab. If you didn't add the supertroopers on the end of the command you'd have two files named xaa and xab.
To join the files back together, just use the cat command. To join the files in this example, type % cat supertroopersaa supertroopersab > supertroopers.avi
This joins the two files with the > output and creates a filename that follows the > . If you have more than two files or you just don't want to type each split file then you can use wild cards to make it easier. For example, you could just type % cat supertroopers?? > supertroopers.avi and it will join the files just like the above cat command.
You'll then have a file identical to the original bigsupertroopers.avi only now it's called supertroopers.avi or whatever you called it.

  • Burning DVD with AVI files???

I am strugling to do this - all I want to do is back-up an avi file to dvd, but when I use the mac proprietory burner, I get an error message saying that the codec is missing....
    Please help someone!!

Install Perian and convert the AVI to a format usable in the burning application. Alternatively, use the Finder to burn the file as data; if you're trying to make a backup and not a video DVD, this is the best option.

  • Burning .avi file - volume stops?

I am using iDVD 08 to burn a large .avi file with .mp3 sound. The file plays perfectly in Quicktime on my Mac, but when I burn it with iDVD (Professional Quality) it plays fine for about 5 minutes but after that the audio stops for some reason. I still get the video playing but the audio gives out, is this some bug in iDVD or is something else wrong?
    Thanks!

Try the following basic trouble shooting steps that are mentioned on many posts.
    Save as a disk image
Burn disk image using Disk Utility at a slower speed (2x or 4x)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
    Use DVD-R (not +/-RW or +R)
    Use Maxcell or Verbatim disks
    Hope that helps

  • DVD BURNING AND FILE DOWNSIZING

Hi I want to burn a dvd on a 4.7gb disc. Yet the dvd file is to big. Is there a way to downsize the file so I can burn this file on to the disc?

Depending on what it is exactly you are trying to burn.
Roxio's Popcorn, and Toast-7 both have the ability to compress large files and compress them to fit on a standard 4.7gb DVD.
This is how you fit a 7 or 7.3gb file of a Commercial DVD Movie on a 4.7gb disc.
I would however suggest when you pose a question, give as much detailed information as you can.
This will allow all to give you a detailed answer to your problem.
    Cheers Don

  • Encore CS4 Stops transcoding to DVD DV AVI files

I dont know what is going on why adobe released unfinished soft and updates?. Purchased and installed SC4 and I have SC3 installed on the same machine with WinXPPROSP3 with all latest updates of video card and other soft. Have build a two projects in Encore SC4 already, but does not render to dvd imported DV AVI files.
Now, the setting are as fallows, one minuet long (or complete 1 hour project) 4:3 DV AVI files or imported premiere pro project, and set to be transcoded to DVD High Quality NTSC 8mps 1 pass, (it is one of the default presets) and it does not finish transcoding to dvd. The funny thing is that, this file with this trhanscode setting was used many times in CS3 and in CS4 it is not working. Quick time was updated to 7.6 and I had 7.5 before and went back to 7.4 but it didnt change anything.
Would like to know ASAP what is going on why the render stops?
I was watching the transcode status/progress when rendering on the back it stops shortly after conforming audio or at the very end of importing a file. However CS3 finish rendering with same presets with no problem.
    So why it stops transcoding?
    PC config is this
    Quad Q6600 SPU
    4Gb DDR3 Ram
    Dual 8800 Video card
    PQ53K Mother board
    2.5Tb of HDD
What is not there, why is not rendering?

Thanks JB and HM for your input! My videos consist of 1) still images and 2) some video clips (captured with APP) and 3) almost all of the video transitions APP offers. I rarely have a montage over 30 mins. Most of them run between 15 and 20 mins. With this info, would you say it is best if I stick with my current method of encoding (encoding in APP with MPG2-DVD at 8Mb/CBR/1pass then importing into AED)?
Some have asked me why I even bother with AED and why not just build the DVD directly from APP. The reason is that AED allows me to create a menu with the option of both single play and loop play, something APP will not let me do.
    Thanks again!

  • Gnome native dvd burner - show file sizes before a burn on dirs?

Is there a way to get a gnome-native dvd burning app to show the filesizes of user added folders before a burn?  In other words:
    Blank DVD
    -Folder 1 (3.2 Gb)
    -Folder 2 (0.4 Gb)
I have tried in both gnomebaker and brasero but can't do it.  The only app that does is k3b and it requires tons of kde libs to run.

Hi, you can upload screenshots hear, limited to 2 NB I think, by using the little Camera icon in a reply.
Apple thinks we don't need to no anything & things should just work, of course they often don't & the lack of, or difficulty of finding useful info is no help... & it's getting worse.
Some things are easier on Macs, some on Windows.
I suspect you're copying from some iPhoto or fancier App's folder, which may contain icons & such of the real thing.
    Might try Burn...

Or the best Software deal on the Planet...
GraphicConverter has a powerful Browse Folder function, & many tools for manipulation, & you can keep your Pics wherever you want...

  • Burning avi file on a DVD

Any body have the solution for this error went burning a avi.
    Using Toast Titanium 10.5
Interface error: 5. The connection is not stable.
    :thx:

    Using Toast Titanium 10.5
Interface error: 5. The connection is not stable.
This is apparently a known issue with Toast and some of the newer Macs.
    http://forums.support.roxio.com/lofiversion/index.php/t59893.html
I don't have a solution other that to say that users who report the problem mention that burning to external drives or with different programs like DVDRemaster have reported success.
Are you just trying to copy the file to a DVD or re-author it for DVD player playback?

  • DVD burning - all files do not copy

I have been having a burning problem with the system burning DVDs.
When I burn a disc not all the files copy. Sometimes one whole folder of many does not get copied; sometimes just the materials within a specific folder does not get burned. No error message is given and the DVD verifies 100%. I have tried burning at different speeds and it does not have any effect. I use to have no problems and can not think of what the problem is... HELP!
    Thanks!

Some files did burn that were over 32 characters, but some files that were shorter did not. Should I not have file names over 32 characters?

  • Burning DVD's from .avi files

What exactly do I have to do to use iDVD 6 to make a DVD from .avi files?

What exactly do I have to do to use iDVD 6 to make a
    DVD from .avi files?
The .AVI format is just a wrapper for many different ways of storing audio/video - some 'flavors' work in iMovie/iDVD and some don't.
I have a video camera that produces a 'flavor' of .AVI file that requires VisualHub at http://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/ so that I can convert the files into DV video files that CAN be used in iMovie/iDVD.

  • Putting .avi files onto DVD

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this question (and I can't seem to find any other threads about it), but I have a bunch of TV Shows in .avi format on my computer. I'd like to be able to place them on a DVD where I can simply watch them on my TV or through a DVD drive. Is there a way to do that with iDVD or is it iMovie that I need? Thanks for any help!

I might be able to help...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2091550&#2091550
a post discussing playing .avi files. Download the divx component to enable Quicktime to play majority of .avi files. Anything that Quicktime still can't play can be played in VLC.
I had 3 .avi movies, one widescreen, and couldn't burn them in iDVD. They previewed, tho, so I converted the widescreen into .mov using Quicktime (Pro only?). Quality was still good. Without converting the other 2 .avi files, I easily burned all 3 (1 .mov and 2 .avi) using iDVD.
My theory is that iDVD can burn .avi files, just as long as 1)they play perfectly in Quicktime and 2)at least one .mov file is included in the burning.
But I've no idea why this worked, and it was the only time I tried it, so it might not work. Although the 3 .avi files were exact same format (DivX 6.0)
You can use an iPod converter, like iSquint, to convert any .avi file into iPod format, which obviously plays in quicktime. Just make sure H.264 is unchecked, since it degrades quality for TV viewing.
oh yeah, iDVD burning and Quicktime converting takes really long! I had to leave my iMac on overnight once for each.
    Hope this helped

  • Dvd to avi

i need somthing to convert a dvd to avi file. I own the DVD's i want to covert, i just want them on my my macbook so when i travel i dont have to carry around a book of dvds. they are only snowboard and skate videos so they dont take up too much space. anyway if you know of anything that will convert this way please link me.

Actually, Toast is for burning CDs. If you want to do some DVD/video conversion, Roxio's Popcorn might be more appropriate.
There are quite a few other options as well:

  • How to burn 23 AVI files onto DVD?

I am trying to figure out how to make a DVD of a tv show season which has 23 episodes for my kids.
How can I make a DVD with all these?
Do i have to convert them first or create a project and drag the AVI files in?
    Thanks
    Patrick

    Hi RIPNHL2005
Welcome to apple discussions. If you find that the avi file/s will not work within iDvd directly (and some will not since avi is simply a container format) then the best way I find is to first convert them with an app like Mpeg streamclip. There are at least two web locations where you can download this freeware and they are shown below.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/mpegstreamclip.html
Assuming your episodes do not exceed 120 mins. per single layer dvd (or about twice that for dual layer media) then you can use iDvd thereafter.
However I do have an alternate suggestion also. I use software from Elgato / EyeTV3 in combination with EyeTV products to capture directly to my Hdd and then I can use Toast to burn them to Dvd thereafter. Works rather well and especially if I need to exceed 120 mins per dvd. Toast offers a fit to dvd option that you can't find within iDvd.
