DVD Burning takes so long, first time around - why?

Hi guys,
I wonder if anyone can help with a query I have please?
I use an external DVD burner to burn DVD's for a customer each day (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRF82SD22/).
The interface I'm using on this particular burner, is the FW800 interface, and burn times for the same job, are typically around 7minutes per session.
However, (and here's the issue) - first thing every morning, or after a long period of inactivity, a burn will take as long a 18 minutes, then come back to the 7 minute burn time over 3 or 4 burns. If I use it constantly, the burn times sit around 7 minutes all day long . . . . but never first time!
(I noticed too, that the DVD takes a while to mount on the Desktop at times.)
This happens constantly, and I've been taking note of this phenomenon for over 3 months.
iMac is about a 18 months old (2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo/2GB Ram)
OS is 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
DVD's are DVD-R
Filetypes being burned are always .MPG.
If anyone can explain to me why this may be happening, I'd be very grateful.
Thanks in advance.

No replies so I would assume no one has or noticed.  The only thing I thought of, but not sure it applies to your case (which is why I didn't reply but I mention it now anyhow) is perhaps a disk image is created the first time before burning it to the dvd and then reused for additional copies.  The fact that you said you do this throughout the day made me think you couldn't be burning the same thing each time so new disk images would have to be created for those new times which throws out that disk image theory.

  • Upgrade from  FCP 6(motion,DVD,etc) to FCP 7 (motion,DVD,etc) takes so long

I am just wondering why each "content disk" takes along time - I mean at least an hour but it starts the count at 15 - 40 plus hours.... for each disk. Is there something wrong? Or is this everyones experience. Eventually is rackets down but it just seems overly slow....
    Just asking:)
    Thanks!

It takes a long time to read and write from the DVDs. There is a lot of material to move around and if you do not have a fast DVD reader ...
One way to speed things up is to create disk images of all the FCS install disks. Mount all the drives to your desktop and the install time should be 30 minutes or so and you won't have to baby sit the process.
I have mine stored on a portable firewire drive so they don't take up drive space on the computer.
I'll usually clone my system drive before a major installation/upgrade procedure so that if things go badly I can revert to the old system and be back working with minimal downtime.

  • Long processing time but why?

    Hi all .......
in TCode STAD "SAP WorkLoad: Single Statistical Records - Details".
some time or many times I found that, processing time is 10 time of cpu time.
and there no bottleneck in CPU its always free and also Roll wait time.
So can some one tell me where the long waiting time come from?
    Thank you

    Hi,
SAP note 8963 eplains the definition of the processing time. And SAP note 99584 explains why a very large processing time might appear in STAD.
If a long running dialog step performs many DB operations then an overflow in the DB statistic may occur. Reason: a 4-byte counter for microseconds will wrap around after approx. 71 minutes. Then the measured DB time is very small compared to the response time. This is the reason why a very large processing time is shown.
Maybe this explains your situation. It has been solved with SAP_BASIS 700 where larger counters have been implemented.
    I hope this information helps.
    Kind Regards,
    Andreas

  • System Failure while running Adobe Dreamweaver CS6 for the first time..Why?

When i downloaded the adobe dreamweaver cs6 and during installation ... there is no wrong except screen resolution (required = 1280*800 but available = 1330 * 768)
But when i tried to run the program for the first time, the system had failed.
Can you help me to know the true cause, please?
note: i use Windows XP sp1

CS6 requires a minimum of Windows XP with Service Pack 3. Your vertical resolution also does not meet the minimum requirements.

  • Satellite M40-112: DVD writing takes to long

Hallo, my friends, I've a Satellite M40-112 which was bought 4 months before. Now I have problems with my DVD-Ram, the writing of 4xDVD-RW or 4xDVD-R of a volume of 4.3 G normally takes more than 45 minutes, sometimes even one hour. The transfering of data on DVD-RW or DVD-R of the same volume also takes the similar time. Meanwhile, the CPU occupying rate amounts to 100% when writing or reading the DVD-RW/Rs. I've tried the same jobs on my friends Satellite L20 series, the average CPU occupying rate was normally only 10-20%. Could some experts give me your treasurous suggestions or ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Hi my friend
It is very strange. A friend of mine has the same unit and we have created a few DVD movies and burning procedure is much faster. I dont know which burning software you use but please check if the option called simulation is activated. If yes disable this.

  • Why does SYNC take so long now? And why does it BACKUP every time i sync?

Sync takes SO darn long now and when I sync, it does a BACKUP that is causing the sync process to take SO SO SO LONG!
Whats the deal? anyway to turn OFF the BACKUP option?

I have half a dozen screens full of apps - some of which will definitely have to go as some sync operations - especially if there are apps being updated for me takes hours. Yesterday it got stuck during an app update over the wifi - and I had to do a restore - the restore took some time - which included restore from a backup from only a few days ago - the following sync has been running for a couple hours now and appears to be only 75% or so complete. rather annoying.

  • My new HD with a cloned system and apps won't boot the G5 when installed. The clone drive is being journal formatted via usb with OS9 checked in disk utility. First time around, I didn't check OS9, and the G5 didn't boot from the clone drive. Advice?

My system is a G5 PPC with 2x 2Gig 64bit processors (dual core). 6 gig of ram on board, running OSX 10.4.11. I recently discovered the main drive was actually a laptop drive someone had stuffed in there! (The machine was given to me - yes, really). So I bought a nice new WD Caviar Black 500Gig HD. Hooked it up via usb adapter (G5 won't see it internally). Disk Utility saw it, formatted it with Journal option selected, but not OS9 install.
After that, I cloned the data on the slow laptop drive complete with all the applications onto the Caviar HD.Sure enough, the G5 can see the Caviar HD with everything on it.
However, when putting the Caviar HD in where the laptop drive once was, the G5 would not see the disk at all.
So now, I'm reformatting the drive again but this time with OS9 checkbox ticked in Disk Utility. After this, I will install it into the machine alongside the offensively sluggish laptop drive, and as long as the G5 sees the Caviar HD internally, I will clone from there, rather than via USB hookup.
I hope this way the system will speed up! There's no way the machine is running as it can do with a pokey little laptop drive in it spinning at 5k surely!
I am assuming the Tiger 10.4.11 is genuine (I think it is - the X symbol is present on the folder), but I don't have the original disk...
Any suggestions? Has anyone had this experience?

Hi BDAqua... downstairs away from unit at the moment. It's a Western Digital Caviar Black 500Gig, twin processors, SATA3 / 6, 64Meg cache on-board... nice. Very quite with minimal vibration (slight).
However as I'm here I can announce I've solved the problem! The G5 had an original Seagate Barracuda HDD on board as a slave drive. I backed up the dat off that onto the Caviar Black via USB adapter. Then Disk Utility wiped the Barracuda safely.
Then, I installed SuperDuper! to clone the data from the sluggish laptop master drive onto the Barracuda; I also told SuperDuper! to boot the G5 from the newly image Barracuda.
After it had done the job I switched off the machine (it may well have rebooted - I was downstairs watching England fail at Eurovision Song Contest), took out the laptop drive and started up the G5.
Mercifully, it rebooted fine! All details and programs are intact and functioning right down to my screensaver.
I can report that the machine is noticably (considerably in the case of Logic8 and JamPack) faster and swifter at sourcing data.
Everything is backed up and I now have a speedier G5! Hurrah!!
I now have a spare 80Gig drive to hand in a caddy (originally a spare backup) that was made about the same time as the G5. It's my guess that it would fit the G5 internally and probably be seen ok by the system.
It's worth a try. The Caviar Black will have to go into a caddy and become my backup disk. It has a clone of the OS and all apps, so if something goes badly wrong, I'm safe.
Just a thought: The more advanced Leopard and Snow Leopard OS may struggle in G5's because the OS itself may require faster HDD's that cannot go into the G5 normally? I see many reports of Snow Leopard running like a bag of bones in people's G5's. Perhaps it's something to do with data retrieval speeds?
    I'm sticking with Tiger!
I hope this story has assisted someone somewhere... and many thanks to all you kind people who offer to help.

  • Unable to createQueueConnection first time around

    Hello.
I have this wierd behaviour I encounter with WebLogic 9.2.
I created a ConnectionFactory in WebLogic and afterwards bind the object to JBoss jndi via context.bind(..) which was made possible with a simple program I made wherein the object(ConnectionFactory) is look-up from WebLogic jndi and the reference obtained is bind() to JBoss jndi.
With another program, using JBoss' context factory url etc, I was able to look up WebLogic's ConnectionFactory from JBoss' jndi, however when I first invoked the look-up'ed ConnectionFactory's createQueueConnection() I got a :
              java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: ReferenceHelper not set
              at weblogic.rmi.extensions.server.ReferenceHelper.getReferenceHelper(ReferenceHelper.java:35)
              at weblogic.rmi.extensions.PortableRemoteObject.exportObject(PortableRemoteObject.java:34)
              at weblogic.messaging.dispatcher.DispatcherImpl.export(DispatcherImpl.java:81)
              at weblogic.messaging.dispatcher.DispatcherManager.export(DispatcherManager.java:74)
              at weblogic.jms.dispatcher.JMSDispatcherManager.exportLocalDispatcher(JMSDispatcherManager.java:224)
After the first invocation failure of createQueueConnection(), I invoked it for the second time and it worked. It's strange for it to fail and succeed, my code looks like this:
              QueueConnection qcon1 = null;
              try {
              qcon1 = qconFactory.createQueueConnection(); // <-This invocation fails with an IllegalArgumentException.
              } catch(Exception e) {
              e.printStackTrace();     // IllegalArgumentException stackTraced here.
              qcon1 = qconFactory.createQueueConnection(); // <-This invocation succeeds.
I also tried binding WebLogic's object to another JNDI Server (W-OTX <- this is a commercial one in japan) and run the same test program, and I still got the same result/behaviour/error.
Can anyone shed some light on this matter, with a WebLogic ConnectionFactory bound to another JNDI server, why does the first createQueueConnection invocation fails and the succeeding ones succeed?
              sincerely needing help...

    Hi,
I recommend raising this issue with customer support.
Meanwhile, given the stack trace, it looks like you may be using the thin client jars. If so, I wonder if the regular client jar would work differently: try using the "weblogic.jar" on the client instead of the thin "wl*.jar" files.
The thin jar files are only recommended when a small jar size is an absolute requirement. The full jar can yield significantly higher performance and supports more features.

  • Read from text file takes very long after the first time

    Dear LabVIEW experts,
I'm having a problem with read from text file. I'm trying to read only every nth line of a file for a preview with this sub vi:
I seems to work well the first time I do it. The loop takes almost no time to execute an iteration.
Then when I load the same file again with exactly the same settings one iteration takes around 50ms.
Subsequent attempts seem to always take the longer execution time.
Only when I restart the calling vi it will be quick for one file.
When executing the sub vi alone it is always quick, but I don't see how the main vi (too complex to post here) could obstruct the execution of the sub vi.
I don't have a the file opened elsewhere in the main vi, I don't use too much memory...
Right now I don't now where to look. Does anyone have an idea?

I don't know the LabVIEW internals here, but I would think that it is quite possible that closing a file opened for read/write access writes a new copy of the file to disk, or at least checks the file in order to make sure a new file does not have to be written.
Therefore, if your main VI calls this subVI sequentially (you don't give any information about the place of this subVI in the main VI), you are actually looking at a close (check/write) -> open operation for any time you call it, as opposed to a simple open operation the first time. If you were to open the file for simple read access (since that's all you do), it should work fast every time because there is no need to check to see if it has changed.

  • Just installed 10.4.9 - My LITE-ON DVD burner no longer will burn DVD-DL

I just installed 10.4.9 (I knew I shouldn't have..) and went to burn a Dual Layer DBD with Toast 8.0.1 and it won't burn -- it recognizes the DVD as D/L - but won't write to it (It thinks it does and immediately says "Writing Lead Out"...but nothing was written.
I have tried other burning applications, but no go. However, I can burn DVD Single Layers no problem...
What did 10.4.9 do and how??? I burned some D/L DVDs last night...is this just a coincidence??? Hard to believe it would be...that just after installing 10.4.9 my DVD burner no longer burns DVD D/L!!
    Anyone else have this problem?

i have a G4 500mhz AGP mac (upgraded to a 1.6ghz processor via a NewerTech card) with an internal CD/DVD player (not burner) and i have an external LaCie CD/DVD burner (the LaCie CD/DVD burner is only about 4 weeks old and i've burned maybe 8 to 10 DVDs on it)
i have had NO problem reading any DVD disks until just about a week ago.. i had bought a new Graphics DVD and it worked the first time i put it in the DVD player... the second time it would not work... (((this was the start of the problem of the purple-ish DVDs not mounting))) so, i thought i had just bought a faulty DVD, they replaced it and the new one still will not work at all.. the DVD will NOT work in my internal DVD player AND it will not work in my LaCie external DVD burner/player...
the internal drive just spins for a few minutes and the kicks the DVD out... the external LaCie drive spins for several minutes, then i finally get a message saying the disc is not readable.
what i have noticed is that any DVDs i put in will mount as long as they have a silver surface.... if the surface is purple-ish color, those are the DVDs that will not mount and keep ejecting
even DVDs that i have burned on the external LaCie DVD burner will not mount in the internal drive OR the external drive...
as i said, all of the DVDs that will NOT mount are the one's with a purple-ish surface... maybe that has something to do with the problem....
something must have happened somewhere because these purple-ish DVDs did used to work... i even did a brand new install of OS X.4 on a totally seperate hard drive and these purple-ish DVDs STILL would not work...
even booted into MacOS 9.2.2 and the STILL would NOT mount....
    ANY info would be helpful...

  • Application takes lot of time for first time..

    Hai guys,
we made an application on a 3rd party software for use on a tool which connects to SAP with RFC.
the applicaiton updates ORACLE databse after getting relevant information from SAP.
Now,for information on SAP side we have RFC.
for updates on oracle we write SQL.
the unique problem is..this applicaiton  takes lot of time when used the first time..
once the first use is over it takes much lesser time for any subsequent use(by any user)..
I DOUBT THE SQLS(ESP UPDATE) TAKE MUCH TIME THE FIRST TIME.

I DOUBT THE SQLS(ESP UPDATE) TAKE MUCH TIME THE FIRST TIME.
Why don't you trace the call and be sure?  Don't guess.
once the first use is over it takes much lesser time for any subsequent use(by any user)..
Because the statement is in the cursor cache - clear the cache each time and the statement will run long every time.  Again, trace the call and determine the issue - most likely you need an index or have an improperly coded SELECT statement.
