Dvd burns choppy and pixelated!!! HELP!!!!

I'm working on a macbook pro using iLife09.
my dvd has 3 movies on it. total length of all is 116 minutes.
2 movies burned correct and on the other about half way through, the image becomes choppy and the pixels jump around. I've edited everything in FCE 4 and exported>quicktime movie. I've tried making it self contained and not self contained. Same results on both. I use verbatim dvd-R, burn at slowest possible speed, and at professional quality. I've repaired disk permissions, deleted idvd prefs, and saved as "disk image." the results are the same on the disk image. I think this means it is an encoding/burning problem. But what do I do to fix it.
All my audio has been converted to .aiff and is 44.1 KHz.

Sounds like you're very close to max on length, so that would be my first area of focus. What happens if you use the reference movie (not self-contained) and put the problem video in a project by itself to test if it's a length problem?
Jumping pixels can indicate a media problem, but you're avoiding that with good disks and, even better, by testing using a disk image.
Do you have adequate hard disk space for encoding and burning? Some say you need 20 gigs.
If you have access to a double layer burner, that's another option.

  • Please recommend best DVD burning program and external burner

My FCPX "Share" will no longer burn a DVD on my MacPro 1,1 via the "DVD" destination. However I can send it to "Master File" and it will make a high quality .mov file. I've then tested using Roxio Toast on a 2 minute .mov clip and it did burn a DVD, but the quality was very, very poor. (Much worse than the DVD that I used to be able to get via FCPX Share).
Your thoughts on: 1) Why does FCPX --> Share --> DVD no longer work/ how to fix it?  and 2) Can you recommend the best DVD burning program and external burner? With thanks! Duncan

Toast should give you the highest possible quality so you are obviously doing something wrong.
The only thing I don't like about Toast are the menus  .  .  .  which are total rubbish compared with iDVD.
You should also be able to burn DVDs from FCP X so once again you are either doing something wrong or there is a problem with your FCP X setup or computer.
Try trashing the preferences  using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Disk Utility won't burn with external dvd burner!!! HELP?!?!?!

    Hello anyone/everyone!
I need some help, I'm trying to burn a file using the disk utility. Only thing is that the disk utility wants to used the drive installed on my iBook (combo drive) and not my external DVD drive! I couldn't find a way to be able to chnage the default burner, and I was hoping that someone/anyone could help me out? The file is too large for a regular 800mb disk so I have to use the external dvd burner. Help me please oh wise-ones?!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Find out if the external burner is Patchburn compatible. If it is, then apply it from http://www.patchburn.de/
If not, I'd sell the external burner and get one that is compatible like those from http://www.macsales.com/
You may find other tricks on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ as well.

  • G5 DVD burner error message? Help please?

I get this error message when I try burning a 1gb quicktime movie to dvd on my pre installed standard burner. Thanks in advance
the link below is a screenshot of the error
    http://www.darkstargraphics.com/dvd_message.gif
Im at a loss and ready to by another
below is the dvd burner profile
    PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D:
    Firmware Revision: A606
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2000 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No

The error "internal target failure" appears on PCs using this drive as well, so it appears that it's not a Toast specific error.
However, in my browsing, no one seemed to be able to tell if it was a true hardware failure of the drive, or if it was caused by poor quality media.
I'd try other brands of media and a lens cleaner before flashing the firmware. And, if you do decide to flash the firmware, the current, official firmware for that drive is here. The link in MLCinma's post contains hacked (region free) firmware and is outdated in any event.
Let us know what brand of media you're using and what speed you're burning at.
The DVR-106D has had lots of reports of failures, so it could very well be the drive. At least a replacement DVR-111D will only cost you about $40 - $50.

  • External DVD burner/iDVD and iMovie

Would iDVD work with this external dvd burner?

That would depend on the brand of dvd drive they are using inside there enclosure.
In my experience Pioneer drives always work well.
One would ask why you want to get a small external drive. full size tray loading drives are faster more robust and are much more efficient.
It doesn't have to be a small drive. I picked that particular drive because it was the only drive I could find with Apple listed under supported OS.
I put together my own external drive. I used a pioneer 112D 18x DVD-RW cost £16. I got an icybox dvd enclosure for £20. This enclosure has usb2 and firewire.
It is recognised in the apple system profiler as 'apple shipped'. And works with idvd and itunes and diskburning.
It looks like that copy is only in the UK. Perhaps there is a US version?
Or maybe I just need to find one that is USB supported and it will work on my Macbook? I have a feeling some will work. I just wont be able to use the software for them.

  • Dvd burning programs?? help me!

i burn alot of dvd's for my pregnant wife and she wanted a few seasons of seinfeld. she is very weird but thats what they want. i have burn and visual hub but i want to put a few episodes on a dvd-r so she can watch it on her portable dvd player. the program "burn" gives me a hard time all the time and i didnt try to make a dvd with 3 or 4 episodes yet. only 1 movie per dvd. is there any program that i can burn 3 or 4 episodes to 1 dvd? im going to try using visual hub in a minute. thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

Digital copies are a relatively new thing, they come as part of the package on some more recent films. Basically you buy the DVD to view at home and you get a copy optimised for use on mobile devices as well. I've never run across one myself and I'm not sure what the exact process is whether they come on the disk when you buy it and it can be transferred to you computer or you get an access number so that you can download them. Whichever way it's done they aren't a separate item.

  • DVD burner manufacturer and model number/disc compatibility

does anyone have experience with what brand dvd-r's work with this burner. i went through a tough time on my windows machine finding the correct type with my sony dru-500a and wanted to see what experiences you all have had. thanks

I would say that almost any brand should be fine BUT my experience has been that almost any brand other than Verbatim has at some stage or another just not been good enough.

  • Running latest Adobe CS (ie Photoshop 13.1.2) on my MacBook Pro Retina, yet the interface is choppy and pixelated.

I have MacBook Pro w/ retina display, and have updated my Adobe CS to the latest (including Photoshop and Illustrator), and I am still unable to get any CS products to load up HiDPI interfaces. The odd thing is that on a whim, I created a new user account on my new MBPr, logged in using the new profile, started up Photoshop and the HiDPI interface IS loaded up.
As the system profile/account that I use, is one that I migrated from my old MacBook, I'm wondering if there might be some setting or account preference from that migration that is causing Adobe to not recognize my mac as having a Retina display – which might explain why I do see the HiDPI interface in Photoshop when I use the test account that I created from new on this MacBook, but not when logged into my main account which was migrated from a non-retina MacBook. I'd hate to have to create a new profile, then manually transfer everything just to get Adobe Retina support working properly. Does anyone have any ideas about how I might correct this?
I have already 'uninstalled' then 'reinstalled' CS twice, and I've run Adobe's cleanup tool after uninstalling as well, but still no luck. I have a feeling that it is probably a simple preferences file or some profile data that needs to be edited, or purged. Also, I have run a few of the leading system utilities to rebuild permissions, clear cache data, etc... But still no luck.
I have contacted Adobe multiple times, and their support has been less than worthless. I have yet to talk to a single Adobe support team member who even knows what I'm talking about when I mentione the 'Retina display'. I've given up there.
Thank you in advance for your help. Working in Photoshop and Illustrator on a Retina display, without a HiDPI interface *****..!   :-)

Moving your files shouldn't be that hard. If you are like most Mac Users all your files are in your User folder under Document, Music, Pictures and whatever. Just copy the folders and files from those main folders to the same main folders of the other User account.
Even easier if like me I store all my files in folders of my own choosing mainly in the ROOT of the drive. Thjen all you have to do is change the permissions on them.

  • External DL DVD Burning Help

Today I tried to burn my first dual layer DVD using my external DVD burner drive and Toast...It worked for about five minutes and then I got a weird error saying that there was an error in the "medium." I tried going to Roxio's site for answers, but it didn't help. Could it just be that my drive is outdated, or could the dual dvds that I bought aren't compatible with my drive? My drive is a 16x12 dual and the blanks I bought are dvd+r dl Verbatim.
    Any help is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

How are you connected to it? FireWire or USB? Regardless, make sure you connect the device directly to your MBP and not via a hub. Also, remove any devices that aren't needed. Basically it's trying to make it work with the simplest setup possible.
I would firstly try again doing a restart and run no other applications other than your DVD writing application.
Obviously with DL media the speed at which you can create coasters such that it become more costly than to simply replace the drive is quite real.
By the way, what make/model drive is it?

  • How can I Burn a Simple DVD with Chapters and Menus out of My Home Videos.

I created an iMovie (unsig iMovie 10.0.2) of my daughter's volleyball season.  I inserted markers separating each game day, hoping these would create chapters in my DVD.  Then I did some research about DVD burning apps and finally downloaded BURN.  With Burn I created a DVD, but this DVD did not have chapters and also did not have a customizable menu.  The whole movie ended up as one 2 hour long chapter.
I have hundresd of family vacation on a hard drive stored and would like to start making iMovies of them to put on DVD for easy watching and forbackup  storing.
What is a simple way I can burn my iMovie with chapters onto a DVD?
My macbook pro did not come with iDVD so I dont have it.
    Thanks.

MY source is HD i beleive. I shot videos with an iPad Mini.
I ventured into this because I offered this DVD to several team parents, so they are waiting for me to give them the DVD.  While I was making it, I added subtitles, showing the game dates, game scores and stats of each player, so it came out really nice.  However, not to concern about quality, i have burt the video in a dual layer dvd in SD.  I dont have a blue ray burner nor media.
This made me want to do the same with my family vacations vieeos, whic now are a bunch of files in a hard drive, sort them by vacation and add titles like lications to actualy be abel to watch them on a dvd someday.
I have apple tv in the family room, but do not use to watch these videos, will look into that. However, I would still want to make the DVD's.
It seems odd how this, basic feature, has been dropped. I guess apple does not want us to use any more discs.
Still hoping I can do this, if not, I will have to gie away the DVDs with the 2 hour long video in a single chapter.

  • ITunes Seem to Have Suddenly Stopped Communicating With the CD/DVD Burner

Hello, I wonder if anybody can help - my itunes application seems to have suddenly stopped communicating with my laptop's cd/dvd burner
    (Generic Name (E: H - T-S D D A S - 20N ATA Device)).
About 2 years ago, I have experienced a similar problem, but was able to resolve it by downloading 64-bit compatible GEAR drivers to my system. However, the problem has re-appeared when I have updated to iTunes Version 10.1. Funny enough, the cd/dvd burner started getting recognized again when I updated to iTunes Version 10.2, but halfway through me burning a large playlist to multiple cds has suddenly stopped recognizing the cd/dvd burner again, and has never "resolved itself" ever since.
I have tried multiple approaches to solving this issue, including completely re-installing itunes software and completely re-installing GEAR drivers, but nothing works. I have even tried uninstalling GEAR drivers completely, as I read that it worked for someone on one of the similar forums, but that didn't work either.
My itunes diagnostics runs all the points of the cd/dvd drive check successfully, except for the last point (Can Not Read Audio CD). Here's what the diagnostics summary looks like:

I have noticed that the diagnostics summary containes a suggestion to update firmware of my laptop's cd/dvd drive, but currently there are no such firmware updates available.
Another frustrating issue that I ran into was trying to convey this issue to Apple Technical Support via e-mail using the Express Lane for the troubleshooting issues. I really fail to understand why I am being asked for the "hardware serial number" when I'm clearly choosing the categories for "iTunes/CD-DVD Import Issues" which are software, not hardware, categories! This prevents me from being able to simply send the description of my problem to the correct Apple Support department, and does not let me do that even when I enter my itunes' Serial Number, which can be found in the diagnostics summary provided above.
Much Thanks to anyone who can provide any kind of helpful advice, even if it's just on how to be able to convey this problem to Apple Support via e-mail!

    Okay ... checking something else:
Current user is not an administrator
Is that true? Or do you in fact have a Windows user account with full administrative rights?
(It's possible that a permission may have gone astray in your usual user account, which might be causing the burning issues.)

  • Dvd burner

having problems backing up itunes libray on dvd 4.7 discs. used to back up at max burn speed. now i keep getting messege burn speed to high. i am now down to burn speed 2x and was able to back up. I really think it is a problem with itunes and not my burner as i believe i have all driver updates but could be wrong. my computer is 3 years old. does anyone know if i went to staples and picked up a new sony or memorex dvd burner if this would help as then i would be 100% sure the burner has all updates

You might want to Google for the Download of YouTube videos, but I use FireFox browser with DownloadHelper.  Then  a simple way to make a DVD usable in a DVD player is to  drop the video into DVDFlick.: http://www.dvdflick.net/download.php

  • IMac DVD Burner only burns on Apple Brand blank DVDs

    Hello,
I have an iMac G4 Dome and just last week it stopped burning DVDs on any brand outside of Apple Blank DVDs. The CD burner works fine, it's just the DVD burner. Can anybody help?

maybe you just accidentally bought your first batch of DVD+R.
The burner in that machine can only burn DVD-R
THis is confusing to a lot of people. We're all so used to seeing CD-R, that we just assume DVD-R has a similar meaning.
The breakdown is something like this.
CD-R = Compact Disc (dash) Recordable
    DVD-R = DVD minus Recordable
    DVD+R= DVD plus Recordable.
I know it's dopey, but that's probably what's happening. The early superdrive, though actually ABLE TO DO IT, has the firmware blocking any DVD+R media, largely because Apple knew that +R media will not play in a lot of consumer decks, and didn't want to field the questions and irate calls (i.e. My iMovie and iDVD project wont play in my cousin's DVD player??!!!_
Anyhow, i suspect you just bought your first DVD+R media, and it just wont work.

  • DVD Burning Engine

I'm using Premier Pro 2.0.  To cure the problem of the program not spawning correctly, the program was just re-installed with tech support's help and I was issued a new serial number.
Now the program opens just fine but when I try to create a DVD using the program's built in facility from the WIndow ---> DVD Layout screen, I get the following error message... "Could not initialize the DVD burning engine".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Normally, when another piece of software is getting in the way, like Nero's InCD (packet-writing module), one gets "Burner Not Found," or very similar syntax. That does not mean that this might not be the issue, but the error message is not what I would expect, hence my suggestion for the Repair Install.
Still, see the link that John T. provided, as it does cover a lot.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

MacBook white 1,82Ghz shipping with Combo Drive (only CD burner), 60Gb HDD and 512Mb memory.
And yes, you can run windows on that machine without any problems, but it will be much better to upgrade memory to 1 or 2 gigs for much better performance.
